On Friday, February 24, 1978, they left the Yuba County, California area in Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Come along for the strange tale of 5 men who disappeared mysteriously. All of our wonderful links can be found here on the linktree: https://linktr.ee/allts   The Yuba County 5 case is a mysterious and tragic event that occurred in February 1978, involving five young men from Yuba City, California. The men—Jack Madruga, Jackie Huett, Ted Weiher, Bill Sterling, and Gary Mathias—went missing after a basketball game, and their disappearance has puzzled investigators for decades due to its strange and inexplicable circumstances. Here's a detailed breakdown of the case: The Disappearance On February 24, 1978, the five men attended a college basketball game at California State University, Chico. After the game, they stopped at a convenience store to buy snacks and drinks. This was the last confirmed sighting of the group together. The Search and Discovery For months, there was no trace of the men, despite extensive search efforts. However, on June 4, 1978, a group of motorcyclists discovered a car belonging to Jack Madruga in a remote area of Plumas National Forest, nearly 70 miles from Chico and far off their expected route home. The car was stuck in the snow, but it was in working order, and it appeared that the men had left it voluntarily. The Bodies Ted Weiher's Body: On June 4, 1978, Ted Weiher's body was found in a deserted Forest Service trailer 19.4 miles from the car. He had died of exposure and starvation, despite there being canned food in the trailer. His feet were badly frostbitten, and he had lost nearly half his body weight. Other Bodies: Over the next few days, the remains of Jackie Huett and Bill Sterling were found not far from the trailer, and their bodies also indicated that they had succumbed to the elements. Jack Madruga's body was found between the trailer and the car, indicating he likely died trying to reach help. Gary Mathias's remains have never been found, although his shoes were discovered in the trailer, suggesting he might have also died nearby or moved to another location. The Mysteries Several perplexing elements make the Yuba County 5 case particularly mysterious: The Location: The area where the car and bodies were found was remote, rugged, and not on the men's planned route. It's unclear why they would have driven there. Condition of the Car: The car was found abandoned with fuel in the tank, and there was no apparent mechanical failure. It appeared to have been abandoned because it was stuck in snow, yet it was not clear why the men did not try to walk back to civilization. Survival Choices: Despite having access to food and heating materials in the trailer, Weiher did not use them effectively, leading to speculation about his state of mind or possible coercion. Gary Mathias: Mathias had a history of mental health issues and was on medication, but his fate remains unknown. His absence and the lack of concrete clues about his whereabouts add to the mystery. Theories Various theories have been proposed over the years: Disorientation and Panic: Some suggest that the men became lost and panicked in the snow, leading them to abandon the car and seek shelter in the trailer. Foul Play: There are suspicions of foul play or external intervention that led them to the remote area and resulted in their deaths. Psychological Factors: Considering Mathias's mental health issues, there is speculation that a psychological crisis might have influenced their decisions and behaviors. Conclusion The Yuba County 5 case remains one of the most baffling and tragic unsolved mysteries. Despite numerous investigations and public interest, the exact circumstances that led to the men's disappearance and deaths are still unknown, leaving many questions unanswered.

On Friday, February 24th, 1978, five young men left their homes to head to a basketball game at Chico State in Chico, California. This was the boys' favorite team and they had a basketball tournament they were playing in themselves the next day. They were known as the Gateway Gators and were competing in the Special Olympics. The game ended and the boys' favorite team won. They left the school and stopped at a nearby service station to grab snacks before the hour drive home together. Unfortunately, the young men never made it home. Months later, remains were found in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest. The young men, rather than continue south down the interstate, in a straight shot to their hometown, had veered east and continued in the wrong direction for quite some distance. Their car was found abandoned. Four of the young men were found dead. People assumed that because four of the young men were described as “slow” or mentally disabled, they'd just gotten lost, but their families knew better. They still, to this day, believe that the young men were victims of foul play. With one man still missing, there are no answers to this case, only theories and rumors. In 2020, the Bear Fire ravaged part of the Plumas National Forest, which the Daley family has grazed cattle on since the late 1800s. Sadly, most of the Daley's cattle herd was lost in the fire. The event and horrific days that followed prompted Dr. Dave Daley, past California Cattlemen's Association President, to keep a journal detailing his heart-wrenching experience. Shortly after, he shared his account on social media. His story went viral and helped change hearts and minds across the country and around the world. Over the past two years since the Bear Fire, Dave has been an active advocate for public policy change in pre- and post-fire management. Listen as Dave sits down with Michael to discuss recent policy wins, opportunities for greater change as it relates to livestock grazing as a tool to help mitigate catastrophic wildfires, and ways that people can support these efforts. Gavin Octaviano was just a few days shy of his 22nd birthday when he went missing on November 23, 2018. He was last seen on a restaurant's video surveillance near where he had parked, heading toward the south entrance of the Golden Gate Bridge. The weather conditions were typical for that time of year, it had rained on and off all day with fog in the area as well, especially later into the evening. The temperature was a cool 61 degrees when he would have been walking around there, around 5:20 pm. He was last seen wearing a heather grey North Face hoodie with a blue and black plaid shirt, dark blue jeans, and white Nike Free shoes. Gavin is 5'11, 175 lbs. He has black hair, brown eyes and is of Asian American decent. If you have any information regarding his disappearance or possible whereabouts please contact the San Francisco Police department at (415) 553-1060, Daly City Police Department at (650) 991-8119 or you can leave an anonymous tip at (650) 873-2567. The family has a Facebook page setup as well, titled Come Home, Gavin. If you were in the San Francisco area during this time period, please consider your whereabouts. People were around this area at the time he vanished. And if the keys are truly in the Plumas National Forest area it is likely there are many other instances others could have seen him as well. This episode covers the odd circumstances behind the deaths of the Yuba County Five, diving into some of the most bizarre unanswered questions in California true crime history. On Febuary 24, 1978, a group of five men from Yuba County attended a basketball game at California State University, piling into a Mercury Montenegro and driving off into the night, never to be seen alive again. The car was found 4,500 feet up a mountain road in the Plumas National Forest abandoned with the keys missing, but the vehicle was not stuck in the snow, still had gas in the tank, and started without any troubles. Four of the five bodies of the men were found in June later that year, only leaving investigators with more questions. No one knows what prompted them to drive up into the dark wilderness away from their homes, what caused them to abandon the car, why they were were found under the conditions they were, and whether or not foul play could have been involved. This case has a twisted web of theories, none of which account for every loose end, and it is likely that there will never be a real answer about what took place on that cold, dark February night. If you are interested in learning more about this case, often referred to as 'America's Dyatlov Pass Incident,' all of the source materials are listed at crimebistro.com, and be sure to visit the podcast on Instagram @crimebistropodcast for some additional behind the scenes updates!

It started on July 13, 2021, and is still burning (as of this post on Oct. 12) on the Plumas National Forest, Lassen National Forest, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and in five counties: Butte, Lassen, Plumas, Shasta and Tehama. It has burned 963,309 acres and is currently 94% contained. The town of Greenville, population just over 1100, suffered catastrophic damage due to the Dixie; most buildings and many homes were destroyed. After attending the game, the group were seen around 10:00 PM at a nearby corner store getting candy and soda. This would be the last time any of them were seen alive. The authorities would soon be called the next morning after the men failed to return to their respective homes. The authorities found the men’s car by the side of the road unlocked, empty, with only candy wrappers left in the vehicle. While this in itself was unusual, what was even stranger was its location. On February 24th, 1978 a group of five adults set out from Yuba City California heading north to Chico to watch a college basketball game.  After the conclusion of the game, the five men were to return to Yuba City, where they had a basketball tournament the next day. What unfolded next in the following days and weeks is shocking and unexplainable.  Instead of driving back to Chico, their car was found abandoned, deep in the Plumas National Forest on a high mountain dirt road, more than 50 miles in the wrong direction near the Rogers Cow Camp site. Searchers attempted to find the missing men, but hampered by severe weather, the search was called off after only a few days.  Months later, a group of motorcyclists made a grizzly discovery, almost 20 miles deeper into the forest, near a Forest Service trailer used used by backpackers for shelter.  Adding to the mystery, several locals claimed to have seen the missing men after their disappearance, with one man claiming to have experienced a very eerie, almost paranormal sighting near the location of the abandoned car.  What caused the five men to drive into the Forest that night? Why did they abandon their car and hike deeper into the forest? Was someone or something chasing them? Join us this week as we try to figure out what happened to the Yuba City Five. S2 E15 - California Conservation with Randy Morrison and Kevin Zeman This week’s Talking Mule Deer brings in Randy Morrison, MDF’s Senior Regional Director for the state of California, and Kevin Zeman who used to work for the U.S. Forest Service and now is working for MDF. Kevin’s focus is helping to implement habitat stewardship agreements, partnership opportunities with the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to do larger scale habitat restoration across the West. These agreements are making a huge difference for mule deer conservation in California, which has seen its fair share of catastrophic wildfires in recent years. Randy and Kevin describe how stewardship projects are helping set back the natural ecological succession cycle to create a more natural forested environment that provides diverse habitat for wildlife and reduces fire risk. Kevin also tells us how the state has implemented the California Climate Initiative, and how MDF has received over a million dollars to implement projects on the Plumas National Forest and help provide matching funding for the federal funds used for stewardship projects. Randy also describes how California’s chapters are working to designate their Chapter Rewards funding and their volunteer hours toward these stewardship projects to make a much larger impact on the landscape. They then tell us about some of the creative new projects that are likely on the horizon in the state and the outlook for chapters in the state moving forward – including a new southern California chapter!
