South Africa was abuzz yesterday following reports of a meeting between South African-born billionaire Elon Musk and President Cyril Ramaphosa in New York. Footage released by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) captured the two engaged in discussions in Ramaphosa's hotel room during his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly. According to the Presidency, the talks centred around investment opportunities in South Africa. Prof. Theo Venter, a political analyst from the University of Johannesburg, told Biznews that the dynamics of Ramaphosa's visit to New York shifted after the Musk encounter. Instead of focusing primarily on the international court case involving Israel and Palestine and the transformation of the Security Council, the meeting with Musk took centre stage. Venter emphasised that if a breakthrough on Starlink for South Africa is achieved, it could open up “Musk's financial muscle to be more prevalent in South Africa in the future.” Additionally, Venter pointed out that this engagement with Musk could be strategically beneficial for Ramaphosa, given Musk's backing of Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential elections.
As South Africa's crucial elections on 29 May draw near, political parties are concentrating their campaign efforts in Kwazulu-Natal. The province has been singled out as the bellwether of this year's elections by Prof Theo Venter, a political analyst from the University of Johannesburg. In an interview with Biznews, Prof Venter noted that the ANC's performance in Kwazulu-Natal in past elections has been a strong indicator of their national results. Reflecting on the impact of the newly formed umKhonto we Sizwe Party (MKP), he said the MK Party could secure 8% of the vote if the latest Ipsos polls are accurate. Prof Venter anticipates that the Constitutional Court will not permit Zuma to enter Parliament. He believes that Zuma is not interested in being a part of Parliament per se, but rather in influencing it. If Zuma were to sit in the House of Assembly, he would forfeit the benefits and salary of an ex-president. According to Venter, Zuma's primary objective in this election is not to shape legislation, but to prevent Ramaphosa from assuming the presidency. - Linda van Tilburg
Judges in MK Party/Zuma case against IEC, ‘took the soft option' – Prof Theo Venter Former President Jacob Zuma can contest the election as one of the candidates for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. It follows after the Electoral Court dismissed the Independent Electoral's (IEC) objection to Zuma's inclusion because he has been convicted of a crime. It will mean that Zuma could be back in Parliament if the MK Party garners enough support on 29 May. Political analyst, Prof Theo Venter said in an interview with Biznews that the judges took the soft option rather than strictly adhering to constitutional principles. Zuma, he says has the cunning ability, like former U.S President Donald Trump to put the system under pressure. Venter said he believes that the five judges on the bench were swayed by extra-judicial issues like the potential for violence. Should the IEC decide to take the matter to the Constitutional Court, Venter said it would not be before the elections. He described the May elections as almost unpredictable, now. Zuma's inclusion on the MK Party's ballot is going to be a game-changer, Venter said.
Despite surveys and polls indicating that the ANC's support in the coming elections could drop to below 50%, Prof Theo Venter, a political analyst at the University of Johannesburg expects President Cyril Ramaphosa to be back in Parliament to deliver the second SONA after the election. In a post-SONA interview with Biznews, Venter detailed the ANC's potential voter base, including 30% of the rural vote, 10-12% of urban voters and he expects that a permanent Basic Income Grant could add another 5% to the ANC's tally, bringing it close to the 50% threshold to stay in power. He described President Ramaphosa's claims of ANC successes over the past 30 years as unconvincing and expressed scepticism that more than 10% of stolen state capture funds will be recovered. Amid stage 6 loadshedding over the weekend, Venter dismissed Ramaphosa's assurances of an end to the worst of loadshedding as political campaign rhetoric. Venter also commented on Ramaphosa ‘looking for a pen' to sign the National Health Insurance legislation, suggesting that the President might be reluctant to sign the bill. The one positive aspect of the speech, he said, is that the ANC clarified it is going for green energy and a just energy initiative focusing on Mpumalanga, which is ironically a model that was very actively pushed by former Eskom CEO, André de Ruyter.
The Human Rights Commission (HRC) conducted an investigation into the riots of July 2021 and found no direct link to the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma. The report indicates that the widespread looting and property destruction were orchestrated by well-resourced ‘primary actors' whom they did not identify. The HRC highlighted a lack of coordination among security forces and the significant role of social media as major contributors to the unrest. The riots, which occurred from July 8 to 19, resulted in the loss of 350 lives and an estimated R50 billion hit to the South African economy. In a Biznews interview, Prof. Theo Venter described the report as ambivalent. He likened Zuma's incarceration to the events of July 2021 with the saying, “If it looks, swims, and quacks like a duck, it is a duck.” However, in this case, he said the HRC saw all the signs but concluded it wasn't a duck. Prof. Venter stated that most analysts of the July 2021 events would undoubtedly see a link. Regarding the unnamed ‘primary actors' or agitators who planned and incited the violence, Prof. Venter suggested that the architects of the July 2021 riots are likely in the upper ranks of the ANC in Kwazulu-Natal, but it would be too uncomfortable for the ANC to deal with them. He also said that the Defence Force escaped the scrutiny of the HRC investigation
Political analysis: ANC vs Zuma-led MKP battle | Dirk Kotze & Theo Venter by Radio Islam
The South African Government has enlisted top legal experts for its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Their 84-page application argues that they only need to prove some of their accusations against Israel fall under the Genocide Convention to effectively halt its military operations in Gaza. Oral arguments for the proceedings initiated by South Africa against the Israeli government will be presented from January 11-12. However, Prof Theo Venter, a political analyst at the University of Johannesburg, told Biznews that he believes it will be a challenging battle. Venter expressed doubt about South Africa's chances of success at the ICJ. He also accused the South African government of selective neutrality, pointing out an apparent bias in its international relations towards Moscow. Additionally, Prof Venter commented on the crisis in student funding following the leak of a series of recordings by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, alleging corruption within the Higher Education Department and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. He predicted that this issue will significantly complicate the management of students at South African universities. He said if the funding of 70% of students go awry, the fall out will be at the universities, not in Pretoria at the office of Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education.
For the past two years, the world has watched with alarm as Ukraine faced a brutal invasion by Russia. The conflict had a profound effect on the global economy, with rising energy prices and consumers feeling the pinch. However, the Ukraine crisis has been suddenly eclipsed by another flashpoint in the Middle East: the violent escalation between Israel and Hamas. In an interview with Biznews, political analyst at the University of Johannesburg, Professor Theo Venter, says the Israel-Hamas conflict has now become the World's Number One Crisis. Prof Venter says that the Hamas attack was an intelligence failure and that Israel is likely to retaliate with a “20-pound hammer,” which could lead to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. In an interview with Biznews, he said that we will all be impacted again like the Ukraine conflict did, with oil prices, the dollar, the pound, and the South African rand becoming more volatile while the price of gold and oil will increase. Prof Venter also gave his prediction of the outcome of the 2024 elections in South Africa. He suggests that despite consistently polling below 50% of support, the ANC is likely to retain power. Venter also predicts that the Multi-Party Charter will get “deep in the 30s” in the 2024 elections. Rapid urbanisation with more voters aware of the effects of load shedding and infrastructure collapse in the country will be two most important game changer, he says. - Linda van Tilburg

President Cyril Ramaphosa has emerged from the African National Congress' 55th conference more confident and he has managed to tighten his grip on power. Instead of hostile members of the RET faction, that were hampering his drive to clean up corruption, the majority of members in the Top 7 of the ANC of the organisation, are now allies of Mr Ramaphosa. In his closing speech the president said the ANC was able to pull back and managed to prove to those that said the ANC will stumble forever, that they were wrong. He re-commited himself to cleaning up government and his party and said the 55th conference which will conclude in hybrid in January have ‘united' the ANC. But will Mr Ramaphosa be able to abandon his cautious style and speed up the economic reforms he has repeatedly promised and can we expect a Cabinet reshuffle in the New Year. Prof Theo Venter told Biznews that he was expecting a Cabinet reshuffle in the New Year with several Minister being dropped. and, that the Phala Phala investigation will with Ramaphosa firmly back as ANC President, “slowly but surely wither away. The ANC caucus in Parliament managed to ward off a rebellion against President Cyril Ramaphosa with only 5 of its members of parliament voting for the adoption of the Section 89 panel report on the Phala Phala theft that found that he may have violated the Constitution. Notably voting in favour of proceeding with impeachment was his arch-rival for top positions in the ANC, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. Conspicuously absent from voting was Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and the man who plans to challenge Ramaphosa for the ANC leadership, Zweli Mkhize. It means the obstacles have been cleared for him to stand as president of the ANC for another 5 years when the organisation convenes at Nasrec, near Soweto for its 55th National Conference on Friday. At his election in December 2017, Ramaphosa said he would focus on tackling corruption and that he was the unity candidate. Ramaphosa essentially made a deal to hold the ANC together, but the deal prevented him from making big decisions that he needed to make to take the country forward - and his decision to keep his friends close and his enemies closer almost cost him the presidency. Political analyst Prof Theo Venter from the University of Johannesburg told Biznews he believes President Ramaphosa will emerge victorious to lead the ANC for a second term. Venter expects the biggest battle to be for the position of deputy president of the ANC, as the candidate would become president should Ramaphosa's Phala Phala theft force him to fall on his sword. - Linda van Tilburg Learn more about your ad choices. The Congress of the People is in serious trouble as internal divisions and in-fighting spell their early end. Yesterday, party Deputy President Willie Madisha announced that it had suspended President Mosiuoa Lekota. A few hours later, Lekota and national chairperson Teboho Loate announced that they had suspended Madisha, spokesperson Dennis Bloem and secretary for elections Mzwandile Hleko. The party has become the laughingstock of South African politics as the Twitterverse responded to the announcements. Theo Venter spoke to Radio Islam International this morning and said he has no idea who is right and gave a retrospective view of the issues the party has been facing since its inception.

The African National Congress has vowed to approach the Electoral Court to ask for the re-opening of the registration of election candidates for a day. The party says it couldn't register some of its candidates for the upcoming local elections due to problems beyond its control. All political parties had until Monday at 9pm to submit their candidates list to the IEC but the ANC says it encountered problems beyond its control with the IEC portal freezing and data already in the system being voided. Jon Gericke spoke to Independent Political Analyst, Theo Venter

PRETORIA — Although the Democratic Alliance has managed to hang on to the Western Cape, their support has dipped since the 2014 elections. This raises the question whether the leadership of Mmusi Maimane could be challenged. Political analyst Theo Venter from the North West University spoke to Biznews about the DA leadership, has a look at a smaller Cabinet Ramaphosa may be looking at after the election and whether he would be able to rid the Cabinet of members of the ANC NEC implicated in state capture. He also comments on whether the investor climate for South Africa has improved- Linda van Tilburg

Piet Croucamp.
The IFP says it wants the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoane-Mashabane to be summoned to Parliament to explain the reasons for granting Zimbabzwe's First Lady Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity. A number of political parties in Parliament have condemned Nkoane-Mashabe's decision of granting Grace diplomatic immunity. Mugabe is accused of assaulting model Gabriella Engels in a hotel in Sandton, north of Johannesburg. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to political analyst from the North West University, Theo Venter
The DA says that according to the Diplomatic Immunities and Privileges Act, Zimbabwe's first lady Grace Mugabe cannot invoke diplomatic immunity. This as she is not in the country in an official capacity and the immunity extended to Heads of State is not applicable to a first lady. It's understood that Mugabe is now pinning her hopes on using diplomatic immunity to avoid being arrested after allegedly assaulting a young 20-year-old South African woman in Johannesburg on Sunday. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to North West University's Professor Theo Venter.
