At PRASA, up to R20 million has been lost on over 1,000 phantom staff. Investigations by the SIU and Auditor-General suggest this is not administrative error but a pattern of organised, systemic corruption draining public funds. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. The South African Government's latest moves to shut down the commercial lion industry have sparked outrage. In this interview with BizNews, Richard York, the CEO of Wildlife Ranching South Africa (WRSA), slams the government's handling of the issue, and expresses concern that Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Dr. Dion George is being “ill-advised”. He says: “I feel sorry for Dr. George…I think he's been handed a hospital pass…” York also asks: “…is the Minister more concerned about climate change and about bringing funds over from overseas than actually addressing the challenges taking place in his own backyard.” York warns that should the lion industry be closed down, it would have a huge ripple effect. “We'll talk about disinvestment from other forms of game-ranching, where farmers will just convert to other forms of commercial agriculture because their right and their right to private property is being placed in jeopardy.” Meanwhile, WRSA is set to challenge the two Government gazettes containing a call for the “voluntary surrender” of African lion bones and the announcement of a draft notice to prohibit new captive lion breeding facilities.

The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to immediately end the major attack by the military forces of that country on the city of Rafah in the south of Gaza. Tá ordú tugtha ag an gCúirt Bhreithiúnais Idirnáisiúnta d'Iosrael deireadh a chur láithreach bonn leis an mórionsaí atá fórsaí míleata na tíre sin a dhéanamh ar chathair Rafah i ndeisceart Gaza. The order relates to the case brought by the South African Government against the Israelis for the alleged genocide they are committing against the Palestinians of Gaza. Baineann an t-ordú leis an gcás atá tugtha ag Rialtas na hAfraice Theas in aghaidh na nIosraelach faoin gcinedhíothú a mhaítear atá siad a dhéanamh ar Phalaistínigh Gaza. In the ruling announced by the International Court of Justice today, it is said that things have deteriorated in Gaza since the court already ordered Israel to improve the living conditions of the community there. The ruling highlights the current lack of food, water, hygiene facilities and medicine in the enclave and states that the court is of the opinion that the Israelis are not properly addressing the humanitarian crisis. The International Court of Justice has no practical authority, however, as there is no system of structures to implement rulings. South Africa may struggle to make much more progress on resolving the country's longstanding challenges if a coalition government emerges after elections this month, Moody's Investors Service cautioned. "These include stimulating years of sluggish economic growth, curbing chronic power shortages and reducing very high unemployment," said Aurelien Mali, vice president - senior credit officer at Moody's. "The current government has made incremental progress on these issues." Opinion polls suggest the ruling African National Congress could lose its national majority in the May 29 elections for the first time since taking power in 1994. While it's expected to remain the largest party, dropping under 50% of the vote will force it to form a coalition government. "The strength or otherwise of the new administration's mandate - and any concessions to minor parties needed to secure support - could make the already complicated management of fiscal, economic and social policy objectives even more difficult," Mali said. Gross domestic product growth in Africa's most industrialized economy has averaged 0.8% in the past decade, a rate insufficient to address rampant unemployment and poverty. Growth has been hampered by fraying port and rail networks, crime and state-owned utility Eskom Holdings's inability to meet electricity demand due to poor maintenance and aging power plants. "The election raises the possibility that policies from comparatively radical parties, including policies not friendly to investors, will emerge," Mali said. "Yet we believe the ANC will remain the dominant political force in South Africa, even within a ruling political coalition, which limits the risks of an abrupt shift from the current mix of economic and financial policies." An Ipsos poll released on April 26 showed ANC support at 40.2% compared with the 57.5% it won in the 2019 election. It also suggested the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe Party backed by former President Jacob Zuma is sucking voters away from the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters. It saw the EFF polling around 11.5%, down from 19.6% in its February survey, while MKP has the support of 8.4% of voters. Moody's sovereign credit rating for South Africa is stable at Ba2.

Hello Interactors,The horrific acts of violence in Palestine have prompted acts of violence on university campuses around the world. This post is about one thing they have in common — maps. Maps legally define territory, the rights of those who occupy it, and the rights of those in power to silence them, displace them, or ‘invisible' them. A pattern we also see with America's unhoused.Let me try to map this out…CAMPUS CONFRONTATIONS ECHOCiting "clear and present danger," Columbia University recently called for the New York Police to intervene. On April 18th, students had set up tents on a small patch of grass on campus — a form of protest calling for the university to divest from Israel due to the violence in Palestine. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, the President of the school claimed their presence was menacing and that they were trespassing. Evidently, parts of campus are closed to students during certain hours. The incident resulted in the arrest of 108 students. But many returned and were joined by more upon their release.Nearly a week passed before House Speaker Mike Johnson called on the school's President to resign if she can't suppress the war protests at her school. He went on to threaten federal funding for colleges that he sees are creating unsafe environments for Jewish students. Many equate opposition to the state of Israel as opposition of Jewish people.Meanwhile, the Jewish Voice for Peace is claiming the university is making it unsafe for both Jewish and non-Jewish students in their actions. Of the 85 students suspended for protesting the actions of the Israeli state, 15 are Jewish. The Jewish Voice for Peace writes,“Yesterday's statement by the White House, like the administrators of Columbia University, dangerously and inaccurately presumes that all Jewish students support the Israeli government's genocide of Palestinians. This assumption is actively harming Palestinian and Jewish students.”Restrictions on student rights have also led to Jewish students being obstructed from observing their religious events and blocking access to their Jewish community.Columbia University, named after Christopher Columbus and echoing his legacy of exploration and exploitation, has experienced similar conflicts before. In 1968, protests erupted over the university's plan to build a segregated gym, viewed as oppressive by Harlem residents. There was also significant discontent with Columbia's involvement with the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), a center providing support to the U.S. Department of Defense during the Vietnam War.Columbia's recent protests spawned more across the country. The National Guard have been called to many campuses to sweep protesters away echoing the deadly protests at Kent State 54 years ago. Or Yale in 1986 when police extracted a student who had erected a replica structure found in South Africa's shantytowns protesting apartheid. One student protester said at the time, “We find the Administrations actions highly ironic in light of the continuing efforts of the South African Government to remove the squatter committees with which our shanties expressed solidarity.” In defense of the school, a spokesman said of the protesters, “No group is permitted to have a monopoly on the space.”No group except, perhaps, the administration. These university confrontations are part of a larger pattern of forceful takeovers and displacement evident in various forms, including the routine 'sweeps' of homeless encampments in cities across America. These sweeps often involve the removal of homeless individuals from public or private spaces, displacing them without providing long-term solutions to homelessness. Critics argue that such actions not only fail to address the underlying issues of poverty and housing insecurity but also perpetuate a cycle of displacement and marginalization.Similar critiques are leveled against these universities who in many cases have been pressured by powerful donors and alumni to silence voices speaking out against the ongoing violence in Palestine. A pattern consistent with conservative efforts to squelch diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and the teaching of alternative views of history and race. Such actions also serve to perpetuate, and propagate, cycles of protest against oppression. This practice highlights how power dynamics continue to affect those with less power. From students choosing to sleep outside in solidarity to the most vulnerable populations sleeping outside in poverty. It's a self-enforcing system where those without property and/or rights are subjected to repeated eviction from their makeshift homes. In the case of those unhoused, it only serves to further entrench the disparities and social stigmas associated with homelessness. In this broader context, both the struggle over property at a university or an urban park reflect the ongoing contention over who has the right to occupy and claim space within our communities.MAPPING AUTHORITARIAN DISPLACEMENTThese relatively small local campus disputes over territory and legality mirror the larger geopolitical conflicts over land, territory, and displacement they are protesting. In the Levant or Ash-Shaam (ٱلشَّام ) region of the Middle East, the 1948 establishment of the state of Israel led to the first Arab-Israeli War. In the period from 1948 to 1951, approximately 688,000 Jewish people immigrated to Israel. Many of these were survivors of the Holocaust and from refugee camps across Europe, as well as Jewish refugees from Arab countries. This period is known as the "mass immigration period" in Israeli telling of history. In Palestinian Arabic history this period is called "Nakba" meaning "catastrophe" or "disaster" referring to the mass displacement of Palestinian Arabs. Here's a short video from the Jewish Voice for Peace explaining how this early history has led to current events…including the role of maps.

In Episode 130 of the No Limitations podcast A Witch That Lived Under My Bed, Blenheim Partners' Gregory Robinson speaks with Dr Adi Paterson, Principal and Founder of Siyeva Consulting. Adi was formerly Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Australia's nuclear centre of excellence.   In a confronting discussion, Adi recounts his early years in South Africa, amidst the turbulent backdrop of the apartheid era, to becoming a leading figure in nuclear research and innovation. He explores the untapped potential of nuclear technology, while fearlessly addressing misconceptions and advocating for a re-evaluation of Australia's political stance on nuclear power. With a rich blend of scientific expertise and personal anecdotes, he calls for Australians to “wake up” to the grave reality of our energy future and its consequences for our future generations and forgotten Australians. He delves into the complex lifecycle considerations of various energy sources, offering a critical perspective on the true costs of renewable alternatives. Adi challenges us to reconsider our perceptions of nuclear energy, beckoning a dialogue that transcends fear and embraces the transformative potential it holds for a sustainable energy future.   Prior to becoming the Chief Executive Officer of ANSTO, Adi served as the General Manager of Business Development and Operations at the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Company in South Africa. Adi was Group Executive of the Department of Science and Technology within the South African Government and Executive Vice-President at the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Adi has contributed to numerous advisory Boards and committees and is currently a Board Member of HB11 Energy and AdvanCell Isotopes.   Please note: this episode was recorded on 5 February 2024.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The South African Government has enlisted top legal experts for its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Their 84-page application argues that they only need to prove some of their accusations against Israel fall under the Genocide Convention to effectively halt its military operations in Gaza. Oral arguments for the proceedings initiated by South Africa against the Israeli government will be presented from January 11-12. However, Prof Theo Venter, a political analyst at the University of Johannesburg, told Biznews that he believes it will be a challenging battle. Venter expressed doubt about South Africa's chances of success at the ICJ. He also accused the South African government of selective neutrality, pointing out an apparent bias in its international relations towards Moscow. Additionally, Prof Venter commented on the crisis in student funding following the leak of a series of recordings by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, alleging corruption within the Higher Education Department and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. He predicted that this issue will significantly complicate the management of students at South African universities. He said if the funding of 70% of students go awry, the fall out will be at the universities, not in Pretoria at the office of Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education.

President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his congratulations to University of Pretoria Professor Dire Tladi for being selected by the United Nations (UN) to be a judge in the International Court of Justice. The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the UN and one of its six principal bodies. Tladi is the newest member of a law fraternity of South Africans globally who are in positions of service to the international community. The President hopes "he will make important contributions to the better world we seek to build". Tladi is Professor of International Law at the University of Pretoria and serves as President of the South African Branch of the International Law Association and Executive Member of the International Law Association. In May, Cabinet endorsed Tladi's nomination by the South African Government, together with South Africa's membership on the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The Court's role is to settle legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorised UN organs and specialised agencies. Commenting on Tladi's appointment, University of Pretoria pan-African collaborative research platform Future Africa director Dr Heide Hackmann said his appointment is a milestone in the pursuit of global peace and justice. She said Tladi being the first South African judge at the International Court of Justice, will undoubtedly raise the important voice of Africa and contribute to shaping a safer and more equitable world for all. "We look forward to witnessing the positive influence his expertise will have and commit our support to him in taking on this important international role," she said. Reflecting on his election which she said was intense and humbling, Hackmann said she was overwhelmed with gratitude because "so many people played a role in this journey".

Boosters: the immunological equivalent of heroin addiction – expert research bioscientist Dr David Wiseman

Though the uptake of COVID-19 boosters remains low in South Africa, with a mere 3.6 million booster shots reportedly administered by August, the South African Government and international health authorities continue to urge citizens to join the conga line of “responsible” people queuing to get boosted. Given the significantly high seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among the South African population, there is no justification for boosters, even less the FDA's Emergency Use Authorisation thereof. In this long-form interview with Dr David Wiseman, a PhD research bioscientist with a background in pharmacy, pharmacology and immunology, the significant risks associated with continued boosting were meticulously examined. Wiseman's ability to simplify technical knowledge and his explanation of the dangers associated with boosters were second to none. According to Wiseman, attempting to boost our way out of the pandemic is the immunological equivalent of heroin addiction. Wiseman furthermore provided critical insight into the FDA and CDC's egregious abandonment of once well-established standards, evidenced by the EUA issued for the new untested BA4/5 bivalent boosters. Note that Wiseman referred to several slides during the interview which have been embedded in the article on BizNews.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
