Because if you put corrupt people together, what are you bringing? What are you doing?” Khumalo tells the full story of the founding of MK, how Zuma became involved, and how he reneged on a deal not to bring in “tainted” people. “…he agreed that if Umkhonto we Sizwe wants to move forward, we should be using people with good names, people who would want to work for the community, people who are clean, who are not going to cause us problems with all these corruption cases…But as we moved on, he brought in his daughter…his daughter started to be crazy and started making lots of problems within the organisation…I never registered (MK) for Zuma's cronies to come back and fight the State, to continue where they started looting.” As for Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Deputy President Floyd Shivambu joining MK, he says: “I don't believe - even in my sleep - that Floyd and (CIC Julius) Malema will ever be split. This could be orchestrated for us to be fooled and to lose the MK without knowing.”

As South Africa's crucial elections on 29 May draw near, political parties are concentrating their campaign efforts in Kwazulu-Natal. The province has been singled out as the bellwether of this year's elections by Prof Theo Venter, a political analyst from the University of Johannesburg. In an interview with Biznews, Prof Venter noted that the ANC's performance in Kwazulu-Natal in past elections has been a strong indicator of their national results. Reflecting on the impact of the newly formed umKhonto we Sizwe Party (MKP), he said the MK Party could secure 8% of the vote if the latest Ipsos polls are accurate. Prof Venter anticipates that the Constitutional Court will not permit Zuma to enter Parliament. He believes that Zuma is not interested in being a part of Parliament per se, but rather in influencing it. If Zuma were to sit in the House of Assembly, he would forfeit the benefits and salary of an ex-president. In South Africa, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) lost in court yesterday in its attempt to remove the newly formed uMkhonto we Sizwe party, or MK, from the May 29 election ballot. The ANC challenged the MK's use of the name and a logo that is similar to that of the ANC's now-disbanded military wing founded by Nelson Mandela. Former President Jacob Zuma has agreed to be the candidate of the MK. Professor Sipho Seepe, a political analyst and former Deputy Vice Chancellor for Institutional Support at the University of Zululand, tells VOA's James Butty, t the ruling means the ANC could lose more votes on May 29.

It appears two former presidents of South Africa are going in opposite directions when it comes to who they will be supporting in the May 29, 2024 general election. The South African Mail & Guardian reports former President Thabo Mbeki says he will campaign for the African National Congress (ANC). On the other hand, former President Jacob Zuma has accepted to be the candidate of the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party. This, as recent polls show the ANC is likely to lose its parliamentary majority for the first time since the party was led by Nelson Mandela 30 years ago. Professor Sipho Seepe, a political analyst and former Deputy Vice Chancellor for Institutional Support at the University of Zululand, tells VOA's James Butty, former President Mbeki might be trying to be relevant while Zuma, who is popular with his supporters, has a criminal conviction hanging over his head.

This year is a significant one for South Africa as it gears up for the elections, and a key factor that has emerged is the ‘Zuma factor'. This follows the decision of former ANC president Jacob Zuma to support the newly formed Umkhonto we Sizwe party for the 2024 election, despite not resigning from the ANC. In an interview with Biznews, Prof Theo Venter, a political analyst at the University of Johannesburg, said that the ANC was taken by surprise by the formation of the MK Party and seems uncertain about how to respond. Venter believes that the new MK party, with Zuma as its figurehead, could impact the ANC's support in Kwazulu-Natal, but doubts it will have a national influence. When asked if Zuma could emerge as the kingmaker in the upcoming election, Venter suggested that Zuma is more likely to play the role of a spoiler. As for the possibility of Zuma returning to the ANC and seeking forgiveness, Venter believes that the ANC is unlikely to forgive Zuma this time around. According to Venter, the most significant issue in the upcoming election will be load shedding, followed by the cost of living and inflation. He ranks the lack of service delivery by local governments as the third priority for voters. The informal economy, primarily run by foreigners, could also become a contentious issue in the election.

In the post apartheid South Africa he was the Minister for Intelligence and Minister for Water. On the Blanket by Eoghan MacCormaicEoghan Mac Cormaic is one of our most willing cheerful modest and clever writers. He is part of that growing band of republicans, particularly former political prisoners, who have produced an account of their experiences. This new book by Eoghan is based on his Pluid-Scéal na mBlocanna H 1976-81. Published by Coiscéim in 2021 it tells the story of Eoghan's life On the Blanket, mostly in H Block 5. In this English language version he takes us through the A to Z of Prison Resistance
