This week playwright Steve Fife sat in-studio in the Playwright's Spotlight. It was a reflective conversation of his experience in New York and on Broadway in the seventies, his dislike of eighties, and the joyous return in the nineties. We discuss rewriting and updating past works, getting back to theatre's roots, directing your own work (of course) and The Greats, the current acceptance of dark subject matter, and audience feedback at staged readings. We also touch on theatre in L.A., cast conflicts and obligations, Playwrights vs Directors interpretation, lessons from workshop participation vs running workshops as well as lessons as a literary manager which led into stories of David Ives and fame in the bubble of theatre and being a big fish in a small pond. Our conversation ends in writing natural dialogue. It's a fascinating conversation through a window of where theatre was and where it is now and Steve's connection with personas we've all come to know throughout our time in this wondrous arena. I'm sure you'll find something to connect with. Enjoy!Steve Fife is an author, poet, and playwright and former reporter and literary manager. His plays SAVAGE WORLD, BREAK OF DAY and THIS IS NOT WHAT I ORDERED have been published by Samuel French/Concord Theatricals.  Other plays include In The Mood, Sizzle Sizzle, Blue Kiss, The Kitchen Girl, Fun With Freud, Scattered Blossoms, Vincent in the Asylum, Van Gogh's Zombie Movie, The Transformation Center, Bring Your Own and The Blessing. His adaptation of Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance was produced Off-Broadway and The American Wife had its World Premiere at the Park Theatre in London. He was 2019-20 writer-in-residence at the Ark Theatre in North Hollywood. He has also penned book & lyrics for four musicals. Melissa and Sherry are so excited to welcome you to the very first episode of Senseless, a podcast that explores chronic health conditions, vision loss, and hearing loss with humor, wisdom, and friendship. They begin by telling the story of how their friendship began, how they bonded over their respective sensory loss experiences, and their individual journeys with chronic health conditions. Melissa shares her experience of progressive hearing loss beginning with an incident after a loud party at age 21, and the simultaneous devastation and relief she felt after being diagnosed with only 50% of her hearing in her early 30s. Sherry talks about being diagnosed with an eye condition called Panuveitis at just 19 years old, as well as Reiter's Syndrome, a severe form of arthritis, then Multiple Sclerosis 14 years ago, and Lyme Disease just last year.  Sherry describes the “Spiritual Renovation” she underwent after ignoring her body's signals for too long, finding the joy in everyday life despite inevitable ups and downs, and making peace with pain instead of trying to escape it. Melissa and Sherry discuss the healing power of their friendship and connecting with someone on the same wavelength, even though they navigate the world in different ways. They discuss reframing sensory loss to focus on the positive aspects it brings, learning to receive help, not just give it, and the importance of leaving your pieces on the ground, being vulnerable, and living without walls or barriers. This podcast is not psychotherapy and does not contain medical advice, but is simply a recording of two friends talking. Episode Highlights: Melissa and Sherry bonded over their chronic health conditions almost two years ago They met when they were both listening to a podcast about living with chronic health conditions called https://laurenselfridge.com/listen (This Is Not What I Ordered), hosted by Lauren Selfridge Sherry has extensive vision loss, and Melissa has extensive hearing loss Melissa began experiencing progressive hearing loss during a Spring Break trip at age 21 She also had chronic ear infections as a baby Went out dancing to loud music and her ears rang so loudly the next day, she couldn't hear what people were saying Finally had her hearing checked in her early 30s and found that she only had 50% of her hearing She felt simultaneously devastated and relieved to now understand why she had to work so hard to get through the day She eventually got hearing aids and realized she had not been hearing birds It was overwhelming and jarring to finally hear the world around her for the first time Probable diagnosis was Endolymphatic Hydrops, an imbalance of fluid in the inner ear that gets triggered by inflammation Anti-inflammation diet, and how certain foods cause a flare-up Sherry's story of being diagnosed with an eye condition called Panuveitis at 19 years old She had to start having injections into her eyeball immediately, to try to save her vision She had surgery to have her right eye removed She was also diagnosed with Reiter's Syndrome, and later Ankylosing Spondylitis, a form of arthritis, and had severe joint pain She has been on countless medications over the years Fourteen years ago she was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis She did not truly acknowledge what her body was going through for a long time - she just kept going and didn't ask for any help She became bedridden for two years, and had to come to terms with her illness Sherry's positive outlook and “Spiritual Renovation” that her health issues have brought her It has also strengthened her faith and allowed her to find safety in silence Last year she was also diagnosed with Lyme Disease, which she feels confident she had all along, since her first eye issues at 19 She lives with debilitating chronic fatigue But she is still happy and joyous through it all Hearing loss can be reframed as “Deaf Gain” Reading the initial show notes for today's

This is Not What I Ordered: a podcast on full-hearted living with chronic illness + health challenges

In this episode of This Is Not What I Ordered, I’m joined by Sheryl Chan — a web developer, writer, and travel enthusiast living with multiple chronic illnesses. Suffering from a mild stroke at the age of 14, Sheryl was diagnosed with a rare blood clotting syndrome that set off a chain reaction of other autoimmune disorders including lupus, epilepsy, Sjögren’s syndrome, and a heart rhythm disorder. In the midst of her health challenges, Sheryl embraced her love of writing and started using blogs as a cathartic outlet. This eventually led to the creation of A Chronic Voice, where she’s able to raise awareness of silent disabilities and give other people with chronic illness a space to share their perspectives.By accepting her health challenges and freely sharing them with the world, Sheryl has taken the power away from her illness and reclaimed it as her own. She reminds us that acceptance doesn’t mean you’re giving up — it can be a powerful opportunity for transformation and inner growth.During our time together, Sheryl offers up her thoughts on why it’s so important to normalize chronic illness and gain different perspectives. She also opens up about the identity struggles that accompany chronic illness, how it taught her to respect her body, and how having a sense of wonder about the body has helped her cope.

On the Season Three premiere of This Is Not What I Ordered, I sit down with April Snow as she shares how her life-long health journey with eczema and high sensitivity has taught her how to live an authentic life without guilt. April is a psychotherapist and Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) who encourages others to embrace their own sensitive superpowers through mindfulness, self-reflection, and self-care strategies. Her experiences with chronic illness and sensitivity helped create the foundation for her psychotherapy practice, Expansive Heart, where she’s able to support other highly sensitive people as they learn to let go of self-doubt and prioritize themselves. April’s passion for self-advocacy and her ability to see the unique blessings of her health challenges is inspiring. During this episode, she opens up about how being highly sensitive has helped her understand her illness, the importance of self-acceptance in the healing process, and how she’s learned to create boundaries along the way.

This is Not What I Ordered: a podcast on full-hearted living with chronic illness + health challenges

In this episode of This Is Not What I Ordered, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ned Buskirk. Ned embodies the definition of renaissance man -- he’s an artist, writer, educator, and founder of the “You’re Going To Die” movement. He’s integrated a distinctive way of confronting loss with compassion to organize events where he invites others to share their experiences with mortality creatively and in whatever way they can. His experiences with chronic illness, grieving, and loss have shaped him into a mouthpiece for acceptance and trusting the unknown. Ned’s dedication to speaking so candidly about death and giving a voice to the fear and anxiety that we have in our bodies and in our lives is empowering. During our chat, he discusses the different meanings behind the saying “It’s okay,” the catharsis of letting go and the relief it brings into your life, and how showing up for his mother’s passing helped him to understand the humility in death. I cannot thank Ned enough for opening up about the impact of his mother’s death, as well as his profound readiness to discuss his own anxiety and struggles with chronic pain and inexplicable illness. This episode is filled with inspiration and a genuine understanding of what it means to show up for life.   You can read the full show notes at www.thisisnotwhatiordered.com

Be sure to get an intro to Mindfulness with my cheat sheet and bonus audio sample here: http://www.subscribepage.com/w6h6i6 Overview: Lauren Selfridge joins me to discuss the ways that we can more easily navigate health struggles so that we can not only heal ourselves, but to find greater strength and resilience so that we can shine in a life that we celebrate! Lauren Selfridge is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist in San Francisco, California. She works with couples, individuals, and people living with chronic illness. Lauren was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis in 2015 and has found that, although living with an autoimmune disease is not an easy path, it's brought more joy and fulfillment into her life than before. This January, she launched the podcast, "This Is Not What I Ordered:" a weekly interview show about full-hearted living with chronic illness and health challenges. She believes that the biggest difficulties in our lives are often invitations into a deeper, richer, more conscious relationship with ourselves.  She offers us these tips for getting started in navigating chronic health conditions:    1. Find a therapist or coach who is a good fit for you, and use that relationship to foster your emotional wellbeing alongside your physical care. 2. Allow yourself to feel it all (joy, fear, boredom, delight, loneliness, excitement, hopelessness, and more). Your emotions need to be felt, and they rarely last when we really let ourselves feel them.  3. Give yourself time and space to take breaks from the intensity of what you're going through. Spend time with friends, watch movies, and remember that you don't always have to be putting forth effort in order to make progress. This is Not What I Ordered: a podcast on full-hearted living with chronic illness + health challenges

In the spirit of vulnerability and trust, I cannot think of a better way to kick off This Is Not What I Ordered than with my own story of chronic illness. That’s right—I’m the first interviewee on the podcast. My dear friend and fellow therapist Jessica is joining me in my living room in San Francisco to ask questions and share memories. Along the way, I want to open up my life a bit and share what I have experienced and where I have grown. For your ears today is my ongoing journey with Multiple Sclerosis, just so you and I can get to know each other better.    You can read the full show notes at www.thisisnotwhatiordered.com.
