Hone in On the Connection Be a Great Boss The Benefit of Niching Down for Marketing One of the benefits of working within your niche and specifying which clients you work with is that marketing can become a lot easier. You do not have to “sell” your practice. Instead, you can speak honestly about how much you enjoy working with your clients, they with you, and the transformations you help them to realize in their lives. Additionally, connect with other therapists that work either in or around your niche! It's a great way to develop a beneficial work relationship between you and other therapists in your area where you can refer to one another, helping each other grow and serve your communities. How to Successfully Start a Private Practice Anywhere! If you're introverted, don't feel like you need to meet 90 people over 90 days – start with one new person a week. Make it suit your style because it doesn't have to be stressful. Allison's top tools for starting a successful Canadian private practice: Launch a great website with copy that is authentic to you Network, network, network! Identify and work within your niche Hone in On the Connection Your copy needs to create connections between you and your ideal clients. Whenever they read over your website, find you online, or interact with your social media, your copy is the voice that you will use to speak with them. Be a Great Boss Being a therapist doesn't always translate to being a good manager. If you run a Canadian private practice, or you are considering launching one, it's worth your while to look into some information on how to be a great boss. Your employees will look to you to set the boundaries, lay the expectations, and be there for them as a guide in how to work well and succeed in the practice you run. Therefore, you have to step up into the role of being a great boss by taking the initiative to learn how to do it. Today is a bit of a different episode because I wanted to dive into an ethical issue which I hear talked about in the online marketing space all the time. It's become fashionable to talk about ethical marketing and having integrity and authenticity in your marketing, but this is something which has concerned us from the minute we set up our businesses; I don't know any psychologist, therapist or counsellor that wasn't worried about the ethics of their marketing before they started in private practice. It's the thing which tends to hold us back, in fact, from actually making any progress in our businesses, because we're so, so concerned about it. So it's been interesting to me to watch the rest of the online business space having a bit of an awakening about some of the tactics which are commonly used in digital marketing in particular, and for a lot of my friends who work in other industries to be coming to me and saying, you know, ‘Is this okay?' ‘What's the psychology behind this, and should I be using it?' I've been having those conversations a lot over the past year with colleagues in other industries, and I decided that I wanted to hear other people's opinions, so I took some of these concepts had a look at the behavioural science behind them, the psychology of why they work, and took that to the Psychology Business School membership. Every eight weeks or so we have what I call an ethical marketing clinic, where we talk about one of these concepts in a bit of depth and think about possible use cases, when it could be a good thing, when it could go a bit wrong if psychologists and therapists started using it, and then finally, we examine it against some of our professional bodies standards. I typically use the British Psychological Society ethical framework, because that's the one that I know the best, but we will, in the future, be looking at some other professional bodies guidance as well. The first topic that I brought to one of those clinics was scarcity marketing, and that's because this is something that I see really, really frequently in the digital marketing space and that I know, if you've done any business or marketing course outside of Psychology Business School, you're very likely to be quite strongly encouraged to use. I know, particularly when I did some training in business (this is going back a little while now) but I was actually made to feel quite stupid when I said I'm not sure that I feel comfortable doing this, and was basically told that I didn't have the instinct for business, that I wasn't ever going to be successful if I didn't get my head around using some of these tactics. I stuck to my guns and after one experiment with it which I'm not too proud of, and I think I've shared on the podcast before that I did put out an email sequence when I first started promoting my first...

The highlights: Allison tells us about what she does and why, stemming from her own experiences with eating disorders and private practice 01:15 I explain that my passion for putting content out there is because I know how difficult it is to access mental health services 03:16 Allison takes us through the reasons why it is a good idea for us to make video for social media 04:10 Allison talks about why we should vet our reasons if we are reluctant to make videos 07:05 Allison takes us through the common mistakes, beginning with getting hung up on our appearance 10:04 Allison talks about the mistakes of not preparing enough or overpreparing 12:41 We discuss live videos and the danger of over-editing 14:00 Allison talks about the mistaken belief that we need fancy tech to make videos, and how we put things in the way because we are afraid of starting 16:30 Allison tells us that the only thing a good video needs to have is great content, and what makes great content 18:56 We discuss needing to serve what the client sees as the problem, and how you have to market to the real life situation rather than the psychological formulation 20:14 Allison gives us her top tips for making video interesting to look at, beginning with dialling up your energy 23:47 We talk about how exposure to yourself on video can help 26:21 Allison suggests blocking your view of your face if that's a hang up, as it's about what we're saying, not what we look like 29:08 Allison talks about her tips for batch recording, and why it can reduce the pressure 30:19 Allison gives advice for improving reach and encouraging engagement 33:29 Links to find Allison: Allison's Therapy services: https://www.allisonpuryear.com/ (https://www.allisonpuryear.com/) Abundance party: https://www.abundanceparty.com/ (https://www.abundanceparty.com/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/abundancepracticebuilding Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abundance_practice_building/ ______________________ Do you sometimes wake up at 2 am worried that you've made a terrible error that will bring professional ruin upon you and disgrace your family? I'm laughing now but when I first set up in private practice I was completely terrified that I had “missed” something big when setting up insurance or data protection. Even now, three years in, I sometimes catch myself wondering if I have really covered all the bases. It is hard, no impossible, to think creatively and have the impact you should be having in your practice if you aren't confident that you have a secure business. BUT it can be overwhelming to figure out exactly what you need to prioritise before those clients start coming in. I've created a free checklist (plus resources list) to take the thinking out of it. In this episode, The Practice of Therapy celebrates its 100th EPISODE! Gordon plays clips from some of his favorite episodes, including guests like Jeff Guenther, Allison Puryear, Joe Sanok, Kasey Compton, Mike Michalowicz, Paul Jarvis, Melvin Varghese, and David Hall. The clips cover a variety of private practice topics like marketing, return on investment, processes, systems, and how to find support. Jeff Guenther: Say More About That In this clip, Jeff Guenther talks about why some therapists get “ghosted” by their clients and he also gives specific examples. His podcast, Say More About That, dives deep into the client's personal journey of finding a therapist and going to counseling. Jeff talks to people about why they wanted to go to therapy, what kind of therapist they were looking for, and why. He covers why some mental health counselors were excellent matches and why others didn't work and also touches on what they thought therapy was going to be like and if it met their expectations. Say More About That asks their guests if they have advice for therapists to help them be better or more effective counselors. Jeff Guenther, LPC, is a therapist in Portland, OR. He has been in private practice since 2005 and currently leads workshops on how therapists can build their digital brand and attract more clients online. TherapyDen Say More About That Jeff Guenther | What Clients Are Saying About Their Therapists | TPOT Podcast 075 Allison Puryear: Marketing Isn't Scary The most common struggle for private practice owners is being afraid to market and being uncomfortable with the idea of marketing. Some people think marketing is something a businessperson does, not a clinician. Allison says every client has their ideal therapist out there. It is up to the therapist, as an act of service, to help our clients find us and overcome their struggles. Know that it is about showing up and continuing to try and build your practice. If someone has a phone call during their first two weeks of private practice, then that's an anomaly. If you build it, they will not come; you have to tell people about your practice to build it. Allison Puryear, LCSW is the person behind Abundance Practice Building, Abundance Party, and is a private practice coach and consultant. TPOT 006 |Allison Puryear, LCSW | Marketing Your Private Practice Without Fear Joe Sanok: Return on Investment (ROI) Depending on which phase of growth you are in, it will determine where and how a clinician in private practice should spend their time and money resources to get the best ROI. When you start your private practice, your greatest asset is the time you spend. In this phase, attention should be spent on bootstrapping and marketing your practice. Spend time making those community contacts and developing relationships with other professionals in your business. Plus, Joe explains the benefits of outsourcing as much as possible so you can continue running your practice and seeing clients. Joe Sanok is the person behind The Practice of the Practice Podcast and Blog. Joe is a speaker, mental health counselor, business consultant, and podcaster. Joe Sanok | How to Level-Up and Grow Your Private Practice | TPOT Podcast 11 Kasey Compton: Processes and Systems Kasey's phenomenal growth (80 staff members and a million-dollar practice in just three years) came primarily out of her ability to create processes and systems to make the growth as seamless as possible. She put most of her effort on the front end into mapping things out so that the processes and systems were well defined. Kasey also said that she made some mistakes and learned from them rather than let them ultimately defeat her. For instance, her partner was high-strung, which made their workplace culture toxic. Three years later, the people who quit her practice are back and notice the immense changes. Kasey Compton built a million-dollar practice with over seventy-five staff members in less than two years from the ground up. She is the President/CEO of Mindsight Behavioral Group with multiple offices located in Kentucky. Kasey Compton | Systems, Processes & Growing a Million-Dollar Private Practice | TPOT Podcast 047 Mike Michalowicz: Profit First With Mike's “Profit First” system, he turns conventional wisdom on its head and gives us another way of thinking about how we manage our finances and look at profit. The traditional way of thinking about making a profit is this: Income – Expenses = Profit It's what we get to keep after everything else is paid for; operating expenses, salaries, and taxes. The problem is that the bigger we grow, the more our expenses grow too. It becomes a never-ending cycle that keeps our profitability at bay and keeps our businesses unhealthy. Mike says this line of thinking is kind of like saying, “my health comes last.” Mike says that a better way is to allocate our profit first rather than let our expenses and operating costs determine what we get. The premise is to allocate a percentage of the income on the front end for profit. It looks like this: Income – Profit = Expenses This, of course, seems like unconventional wisdom. Mike goes on to explain that by taking our profit first, we are better able to take control of our business' health and operate at a level that is more sustainable and realistic. By Mike Michalowicz's 35th birthday, he had founded and sold two companies – one to private equity and another to a Fortune 500. Today he is running his third multi-million dollar venture, Profit First Professionals. Paul is a one-person business; he does work with contractors but has never hired an employee because he doesn't want to be a boss. We should reconsider the idea that bigger is always better. Paul's book isn't about anti-growth; it is thinking critically about growth. The key is to think about how the business works and runs. If we grew our businesses, we would have to hire people and then become a manager. Is that the position you want to put yourself in? Paul Jarvis is a writer and designer who's had his own company of one for the last two decades. His latest book, Company of One, explores why bigger isn't always better in business. Time flexibility and creating a lifestyle that makes sense is far more critical than the money you will make. When a person reaches a net income of around $150,000 annually, then it just becomes unmanageable. Their quality of life will not increase with additional money. It is better to have a strong foundation that lasts long-term rather than something that takes off quickly and fizzles out. Melvin Varghese, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Philadelphia, PA. Empathy Rising: Side Hustles for Therapists in Private Practice
Is having an audience a big deal? I have a different take on this than a lot of people. Most people either say you don't have to build an audience, all you need is ads or yes you need a big audience. Why am I a fan of building an audience, big or small? Two reasons: ONE, this gets more people into your sales funnel and if your content is compelling, higher conversion rates. Having eyeballs on your content is the first part of the funnel. TWO, the very nature of building an audience will make you money! When people see you sharing your expert opinion they will DM you and see and they can work with you. Trust me, this happens to me all of the time. Being visible is the #1 mechanism for making money. If you want to launch a 1:1 coaching program, you don’t have to have an audience but you do need to be visible. To my introverts out there you may be wigging out at the idea of opening up online. In episode 20, Allison Puryear put it best when she likened visibility to childbirth. The labor of going live, networking and posting is exhausting but in the end, you get a beautiful reward. Sometimes we have to get out of our comfort zones to see the results we want. Today I’m breaking down audience building into understandable, easy to follow steps. Let’s jump in! As therapists we get lots of training and do an amazing job of serving our clients in therapy. What most of us don't learn and need help on is how to build, run, and grow a great business. Whether you have clients coming in the door, willing to pay your full fee might have little to do with how effective you are as a therapist. There is a lot that most of us can do to improve our marketing, presence on social media, and networking with our communities. Talking about all of this today is Allison Puryear from Abundance Practice Builders. Allison is passionate about helping therapists grow the practice of their dreams. She knows what it's like to love the work as a therapist, but not feel like you can even survive on what you are making. It is her mission to empower therapists to do the work they love AND make good money doing it. The Couples Therapist Couch is the podcast for Couples Therapists about the practice of couples therapy. The host, Shane Birkel, interviews an expert in the field of couples therapy each week. Please subscribe to the podcast for more great episodes. Her private practice consulting firm, Abundance Practice-Building, has helped tens of thousands of people in over 30 countries. Allison also owns a thriving therapy practice. In the midst of building this life, or as she says, maybe because of building this life, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis last year. She's new to this diagnosis and, as we discuss, learning to balance the necessary rest with her natural drive, playing with a shifting identity, and truly prioritizing the important relationships in her life. This is part 4, of this four-part series of the Practice of Therapy Podcast, “Love the Work, But Hate The Job”. In this session, Gordon talks about marketing and developing referral sources as you start and grow your private practice. This four-part series discusses the various steps and things a clinician might want to think about as they move into private practice. Especially those people making the transition from agency work into private practice. The series discusses: 1.) Knowing your “WHY”, 2.) Making a Plan, 3.) Setting-up an Office, and 4.) Marketing & Getting Referrals. Check out the mini-course: “Love the Work, But Hate The Job” In this course, you will be emailed 4 lessons, one each day, that will walk you through a way to think about making the transition from agency work into private practice. (Get the discount here!) Marketing and Referral Sources “Marketing” is a word most of us therapist types shy away from. The idea of “selling” anything really rubs us the wrong way. In fact, unless a person has had any experience in business or in marketing, it can seem daunting. Most of us in this field have not had that. I think it is important to think about it differently though. My friend and colleague, Allison Puryear, puts it this way: “Marketing your private practice is simply helping the people that need and want our services find you…” I like thinking about it that way! Marketing your private practice simply comes down to making it easier for people to find us. It's getting your name in front of the people that you can best help. It does not have to be pushy or “salesy”. Clients Come to Us In Two Ways If you think about it we get clients is two ways. One is they search us out on their own because they are struggling with some sort of personal issue in some way. Typically they will do an internet search or ask for some sort of recommendation from someone. The second way is through some sort of referral or suggestion from someone that they come to us; typically a doctor or other professional. So when you think about getting clients there are two areas to focus. One is online and the second is through referral people. Online Marketing Needless to say, in this day and age, having a website is a must. This is especially true for those just getting started and developing a client base. For the majority of people, they “Google it” first. So having an effective website should be a priority when it comes to getting a private practice started. It is your “marketing hub”. Two Ways To Have A Website First is to create a website yourself. This a good choice for someone that has a bit of tech-savvy and the time to do it. Especially when you are in that “bootstrapping phase” of private practice. What this involves is creating your domain name and getting a hosting service to house your website. I recommend Bluehost for this. (You can learn more about that here.) And if you want to learn more about creating websites and be in a do-it-yourself mode, a good resource is Daniel Fava's, CreateMyTherapistWebsite.com (affiliate link) The second way to have a website is to have someone else create it for you. For this, I recommend Brighter Vision. They are the experts in helping counselors and therapists build beautiful websites. They also help with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) which helps your website get ranked higher in Google. In fact, therapists websites are all they do. BrighterVision (affiliate link -use this link to get one month free) Blogging One of the best ways to boost your SEO and establish yourself as an expert, is to blog. Blogging does not have be overly complicated and should be treated like writing a research paper. Use short paragraphs and put things into simple, ordinary language. Write to your clients and the struggles they are having. Developing Referral Relationships Besides having an online presence, developing referral relationships is a tried and true way to bring in new clients. AKA, “networking” is truly about developing relationships. If you think about it, it is what we do best as therapists and counselors. We do it all the time with clients. Networking can be simply be dropping off business cards or rack cards to doctors or other professionals to use for referrals of patients. It could also be getting together with potential referral people for coffee or lunch. One tool that I use is a “coordination of care” form. (You can get a link to that by downloading the free Marketing Cheat Sheet). I get an “authorization to release” and send the coordination of care form and a practice flyer (information about my practice) to doctors of the clients I am seeing. The doctor and client appreciate the contact and the doctor becomes aware of my practice. Other ways to develop referral sources is to just simply become involved in your community, especially with other professionals. When people know you, they will refer to you. Put In the Sweat Equity Marketing your practice is something that does take some time. But the pay off is that you will develop a steady stream of referrals and clients that can come to you. Marketing and getting referrals is ultimately about developing relationships with people both on and offline. It's helping the people that need and want your services find you. In this episode of the Practice of Therapy Podcast, Gordon has a conversation with Allison Puryear, LCSW about marketing your private practice. Inksecure: A Legal Podcast Focused on Creating Wealth From the Fine Print
Welcome to Part 4 of the Getting Started Series! I can't believe we're now on week four. We've covered so much. By the end of this series, you guys will be experts - and that's exactly that way I like it. No more of this "legal stuff is intimidating." Here's a recap of the previous part in case you want to take a look. In Part 1 we started at the very beginning, I discussed a wealth of information about how to choose the right entity for you. In Part 2, we talked about legally protecting your website. If you collect any information whatsoever, even if it’s just blog insights and traffic – you are supposed to have a Privacy Policy and could get fined for not having one. In Part 3, I interviewed Allison Puryear of Abundance Practice Building who was sued by a photographer for using his photo – a photo she downloaded from a free stock photo website. Something we all do every day. THIS WEEK we're talking all about contracts! Contracts SHOULD be that best friend that always has your back. The one that is always there, watching over you, praying nothing goes wrong but if it does, right there to defend you. Do you have that type of trust in your contracts? In this episode I explain four reasons you should use contracts and I'll also be discussing four specific types of contracts and what they mean to your business. This week's cheatsheet is a 10-point Contract Checklist which includes lots of questions to answer for each provision, which will help you cover your bases. Enjoy! This week's guest - Allison Puryear - a clinical therapist in Asheville North Carolina was going about her business - which happens to be helping other therapist build their business - when she got sued for copyright infringement. At first she thought it was a joke, then later discovered that a photo she downloaded and had been using for two years had been federally copyrighted and the photographer was coming after her. So I know what you're thinking - she probably just cut and pasted it from google and didn't give the photographer credit (and I would never do that!). Nope! Wrong. She downloaded the photo from a stock photo website - a free one as best as she could recall. So she basically got sued for something we all do every single day. In Episode 13 - I talk about the benefits of registering your copyright. But today, I flip the script and Allison and I discuss steps you can take to protect yourself so that something like this never happens to you. Allison contacted a couple of lawyers to help her through the process and in the end, had to pay this photographer tens of thousands of dollars. (Imagine making that much on one of your photographs?). But - there's another twist - Allison had to pay the photographer, but she didn't really have to pay - find out how it all ends. Enjoy! Allison Puryear is an “LCSW with a nearly diagnosable obsession with business development.” We discuss the origin story of Alison’s company, Abundance Practice Building, and what it’s like to create a business that’s one of the loves of your life. Ultimately, it’s about building a business that is structured around the way you want to live. Have you heard of the “spider web effect”? Allison describes how it plays out for her: she helps someone start or build a practice they love and that gives them the time, energy, and finances to take better care of themselves. In turn, they can do their best clinical work which helps clients and then ripples to all the people in their clients’ lives. This conversation is about dualities and balance and permission to explore and live out many aspects of your identity. Transformation relies on riding the flow between two poles and allowing yourself to be both when it’s appropriate. We talk growth edges and the moments when you panic because you’re not growing. Allison hosts a popular Facebook community for therapists and we discuss what it means to hold space for a diverse community when you have people at different stages of entrepreneurial evolution. Comparison and the desire to follow others’ exact path to growth are always a challenge. We also get into Allison’s experience when a troll who infiltrated her community and how it was ultimately an opportunity to build trust and experience growth. Allison takes us to her current growth edge: allowing more fun. What might happen if you actually gave yourself permission to ask yourself what’s fun based on who you are now and what you need now? Allison describes how she made list of everything she ever found fun in her adult life and another list of what she has found restorative. She also talks about Brene Brown’s “easy buttons” - like having a beer at the end of the day in order to release tension. What’s the difference between fun and restorative and just “easy”? Whether you love to take your own photos or not, most bloggers need to find free stock images or free photos for their blog at some point. But as a few recent horror stories have shown, how to find free and legal images for your blog is NOT so simple. Here are three things you need to know! Thanks to PopUpAlly Pro for sponsoring this episode! Find out more about PopUpAlly Pro! How to Find Free and Legal Images for Your Blog Before I get to the tips on how to find free and legal images for your blog, I want to share the horror stories. You MAY have already read these, but they are scary. The first is from Allison Puryear who shares that she was sued for using an image that she got from a stock photo site. (Language warning in case that offends you!) Her malpractice insurance saved her, but the interesting thing to note is that the lawyer she spoke to said that this is COMMON. Because photographers are doing this on purpose as a cash flow. That stinks. But it's legal. The second post is from Chrystie of Living for Naptime and she shares how several years ago, she used a photo from a Google Search (hey- a few years ago MANY of us did that ignorantly) and lost $7500. She also explains that this was an intentional practice of the photographer. You might think that this won't happen to you, but there are three key things that everyone need to consider if using an image that they did not take. Let's get into it. Three Things to Know Before Using a Photo on Your Blog Permission - if the photo is able to be used by a third party (that's you) Attribution - how you need to give credit for the image source Usage - in what ways the image may be used legally Often people stop at permission. We KNOW now that we shouldn't use an image we find on Google. But we may NOT consider the fact that we still might have to put a line underneath the image that tells where it came from and who took the photo. We also might assume that because we find a free photo or even PAY for a stock photo that we can use it on the cover of our book or sell t-shirts using the image. But PERMISSION does not mean that you can use an image without attribution or anywhere you want. You MUST consider all three. Every site for stock photos is different, but you want to look for the licensing and attribution information. It may help to email the company itself if this is unclear. This may vary from image to image on ONE site, which is the hard thing. You might get used to no attribution on a certain site because most don't require it and then not realize that ONE of the images does. Pay attention! Or use a site like Pixabay, where all images fall under the Creative Commons 0 license, where you can use it for commercial purposes with no attribution. Be sure if you are searching for Creative Commons photos that you STILL read the license, as there are several different kinds of Creative Commons licenses. Be sure that even if you are PAYING for a photo, you read the fine print. You want to be as careful as possible, especially considering that some photographers are intentionally using this as a means to make money. Smarmy, but they can. WE need to be the ones doing our due diligence on our photos!
