Tom Keller spec'd his first truck at 20 years old to haul watermelons off his family's farm. He'd drive a load to Indianapolis, not like the price, keep driving to Detroit, sell them, and set the cash on the kitchen table — then do it again the next morning. That hustle became Keller Logistics Group: 350 trucks, four divisions, and $200 million in sales out of Defiance, Ohio. In this episode, Jared Flinn sits down with Bryan Keller and Jonathan Wolfrum to unpack how a melon farmer's instinct for finding the next opportunity built a company that's survived every freight cycle since — including the recession that just leveled half the dry van market. They get into the speculative warehouse bets, walking away from General Motors, why they moved into bulk and ag freight, and what it actually takes to be named a Best Fleet to Drive For nine years running. If you're a carrier, owner-operator, or fleet owner trying to figure out your next move, this one's full of plays you can run. ➡️ Hauling bulk or looking to grow your freight? Tolstoy addresses how divided opinions persist through the ages. There will be a prominent crisis grabbing Your attention where every opinion under the sun is stated. He posits there is a perception afforded to a select few people involved in whatever conflict is at hand. There will naturally be some who get close to an accurate prediction of how a matter turns out and are often mistaken with being responsible for the event. For example, if Napoleon orders an advance and wins the field, he will get credit for taking ground. Tolstoy has us examine if there is more to the story. To illustrate this, Tolstoy has us imagine the hypothetical of men hauling a log, where each expresses an opinion as to how and where to take it. Eventually, the log will be hauled to some location in a manner most similar to how one, or a small group, predict. We are led to the conclusion that those who predict most accurately are responsible for the task. However, Tolstoy's goal is to relate to the complexity of attributing causes for events. He proffers that there is merely a perception of command and illusory nature of power. With the Log-haul, there will be various men doing most of the physical work and because of their attention to the task, do not often think so much about what they are doing. Tolstoy proposes that they are as much responsible for the result as so-called decision makers. Tolstoy infers that certain men who take initiative to “talk more” are often given accolades and find themselves with decision-making capacity and work less with his hands. Napoleon was one such man.In affairs of the military or other large-scale enterprises, masses direct themselves with grander objectives than hauling a log. The commanding is often done in small teams, who do little of the actual fighting. Tolstoy attributes to this group similar attributes to how man perceives himself when he works alone and develops values to draw from. Basically, considerations which directed past activity, justify present activity, as serve as a guide for his future actions. Tolstoy finds that this analytical process does not take the overriding values bestowed through the Gospel into account and allows us to devise justifications or rationalizations for collective activity. Tolstoy provides an example through the French Revolution. He notes: for reasons known or unknown the French began to drown and kill one another in that affair of 1789. There was an overriding belief that such was necessary for the welfare of France and for Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality. The People later felt differently and ceased to kill one another. It was then believed that a centralization of power was necessary as well as resistance to those who desired to stay attached to monarchies. This resolve led to another effort that involved marching out of country to kill at the behest of men like Napoleon. This was accompanied by phrases about the glory of France and baseness of England. It is such that every movement that occurs inevitably coincides with someone's expressed wish and receives some justification. Tolstoy proclaims that the justifications made for such wars have no logic but have formidable significance. They serve to release people from moral responsibility for our collective crimes, such as how we kill millions of our fellows. Our intellect can excuse, reframe, or justify anything!Tolstoy is wrestling with the nature of life, like the Preacher in Ecclesiastes, who Tolstoy often cites. He is expressing that man must rely on more than what other men say -- no matter how convincing. As Andrei realized on the field of Austerlitz, man must look above and beyond himself and act as if he is accountable to the Almighty even when he is flowing with the strongest currents of conventional thinking. We all have a voice in where we are going and for the wars and oppression around us. We share the responsibility of not justifying the unjustifiable. He uses a metaphor to make the point: Think of a person on a boat who does not perceive the degree to which he is moving, as compared to someone who can see the ship from the shoreline. We are moving but do not feel it. We are all akin to passengers being led somewhere. This can be the narrow path of virtue or the wider path of frailty and sin. Tolstoy essentially is asking you to consider, while on board and looking at the sky: What is Your North Star? This is a stark reminder to not lose sight of the essential connection that those few names in history have to the masses. Power also lies with the people. It was not one man who led to the excesses of any movement. It was a combination of those considered leaders and the rest of us who actually haul the log.

Check this episode out on our YouTube: https://youtu.be/hc33VvhAS_I In 1950, a teenager who'd dropped out of school to save the family farm bought one truck and started hauling gasoline. Today, Wayne Transports runs 750+ trucks, moves nearly 290,000 loads a year, and posts driver turnover rates a fraction of the industry average. In this episode, we sit down with the next generation of Wayne ownership to unpack the full story — the Korean War tragedy that almost ended the company before it started, the bank loan that gave it its name, the move from Milaca to Rosemount that unlocked decades of growth, and how the family handed the president's chair to a non-family member for the first time in company history… one month before COVID hit. We also get into the operational side: the AI tools rebuilding their dispatch floor, the camera + safety stack keeping their fleet on the road, the acquisition playbook that's added 35 trucks a year, and why their turnover sits at 18% while the rest of the industry burns through drivers at 60-90%. If you run a fleet, drive for one, or want to understand how a real American trucking dynasty actually gets built — this one is for you.

It's a banner day here on the pod, Slushies. We welcome a very special guest, American Poetry Review's Elizabeth Scanlon to the table as we discuss three prose poems from Sara Burant. Dagne sends out birthday wishes to Canada's own Margaret Atwood while Lisa shows the team her Margaret Atwood-as-saint candle. We note the recent poetry trend towards raising the profile of female visual artists whose work has been overlooked during their lifetimes. Artists like Sonia Delaunay, mentioned in Burant's poem “Fields,” and Hilma af Kilmt, whose art inspired Didi Jackson's recent book “My Infinity.” The mention of a clay pipe in one poem sends Marion running for a treasure her husband found while mudlarking. Kathy cops to her blue-collar resistance to a precious ars poetica and we discuss what it takes to win her over in the end. Elizabeth relates how John Ashbery likens waiting for a poem to a cat's finicky arrival. We note Frank O'Hara's notion of “deep gossip,” name checking his own friends along with celebrities in his poems, a gesture Burant employs in her poem “Heat wave.” And we come full circle with a shout out to American Poetry Review's own podcast where Elizabeth interviewed Margaret Atwood during the pandemic. As always, thanks for listening! At the table: Dagne Forrest, Samantha Neugebauer, Elizabeth Scanlon, Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, Lisa Zerkle, and Lillie Volpe (sound engineer) Bio: Sara Burant's poems, reviews, and collaborative translations of Paul Éluard's poems have appeared in journals such as OmniVerse, Pedestal, periodicities, Ruminate, and The Denver Quarterly. Her work has been honored with a fellowship from Oregon Literary Arts and a residency at Playa. At 55, she received an MFA in Poetry from Saint Mary's College of California. She's the author of a chapbook, Verge. Fields after Frank O'Hara And the truck driver I was made in the image of has a tattoo reminiscent of a Sonia Delaunay on her chest. And on her upper left arm, a nude torso of Apollo reminiscent not only of Rilke but of the male figure who loved her passionately in a dream—my god, he knew how to kiss and be kissed and knew her better than she'll ever know herself. Nobody sees these tattoos except her, looking in the mirror in a cheap motel's bathroom. At home she has no mirrors, just the phone she occasionally snaps a selfie with to make sure she has no spinach or gristle lodged between her teeth before heading to the bar. Actually, the truck driver I was made in the image of is undercover. She's really a Jungian analyst. Those cows in another dream, her heaviest self, chewing the cud of the past, farting, trampling the delicate vegetation, forming a tight circle around the calves when threatened, bellowing when all else fails. Hauling 30 tons in her 35-ton rig, she speeds past field after field which are all the same field. Oh field of dreams, why hasn't she built you? Instead she deletes photos to make room for more photos, wondering why this sunset, that face, this puddle's reflection, that abstract painting. She fished and caught and couldn't filet the tender meat that smelled too much like drowning. One rainy winter in Paris she nearly did drown. Creeping water-logged from museum to museum, finally she clung to Cézanne's misshapen fruit as if to a buoy. The apples and pears, just one man's apprehension of apples and pears, not thoughts inside thought-balloons, not some parable of ancient September. Just tilting tabletops, shapes, colors, the suggestion of shadows and light. Ars poetica For the chickens I save tidbits, potato skins, and the outer cabbage leaves which make me think of hats. The red wobble of the hens' combs and the smell of their fecal heat, unaccountably dear to me. Awaiting a match to warm me, I chew on a clay pipe's stem, contemplating the waning moon of its bowl and my pink lipstick past. The silence behind words spoken or thought clucks softly in my inner ear. Sitting inside, I can't help looking out, a lifting, carrying blue, the wind's little pull on the earlobe of my heart. Lately I've been cutting paper into shapes that mean Feed me or Take me to your leader, wishing I'd been taught to name feelings as they arise. Tenderness for the apple still hanging from winter's limb. Loneliness drunk down with morning's darjeeling. There are conspirators for beauty. Like rabbits, they leave tracks in the snow. Like geese, they arrow through hallways of night. Without sentiment or self-pity they gaze at certain slants of light. They chip away the ice with a pick to get at the lock. Then they pick the lock. And oh, what a view. I want to walk in the dark to get there, not following anyone's directions. To enter the fortune teller's crystal ball with bread in my pocket and a botanist's loupe. Though I don't know your name, I move forward only beside you, your imaginary hand in mine. Heat wave The woman at the table next to mine gives up loud-talking in favor of song, but it's not looking for love, it's looking for FUN—& feeling groovy. Maybe I should warn her—today's theme isn't love or fun, it's submarine & skedaddle, it's danger-danger, hold your breath & sound. This avalanche of heat, these record-shattering days. See the breakage piling up on sidewalks so hot the barefoot babies weep as they learn to toddle. Maybe, as you like to point out, I'm catastrophizing, when what I really want is to feel groovy again. To butter my skin with baby oil & sizzle, walking barefoot along the burning sand, Bradford Beach where I fell in love unrequited for the umpteenth time. Back then, who was counting? Back then summer lasted for years & still wasn't long enough. 1978, despite Mother's reservations, I saved my babysitting money for a ticket to Fleetwood Mac at County Stadium. Eilleen, Maggie, Liz, Jean, Mary, me—& Stevie Nicks & Christine McVie, the elm trees & long summer dusk of those women's voices. A dusk so filled with the orange, violet & chartreuse silk of its immense flag flying above, beside & through you, you neglect to notice shadows splotching the periphery & forget your curfew. I didn't notice much, so stoned I was, we were, melting into the moment's spotlessness, our adolescent hips grooving, our tan arms waving, here, now, this, this, this—I mean there, then, that, that, that—no one yet suspended for drinking, no one yet strung out, dropping out, running off with boys to Oregon or Wyoming, limping home pregnant or in rags. The elms, gone. Mom, Vince, Rob & Christine McVie, too. I've had to swear off many things due to poor digestion—but oblivion, I'd still like to indulge in that sometimes, diving into it like a bee into a flower, a morning glory, its dumb, purple, one day only show.
Mark Puente didn't go to j-school — he drove trucks for 15 years before stepping into a newsroom. But when a judge tried to block him from observing a public court hearing, Puente didn't flinch. Armed with experience, instinct, and a phone call to his editor, he stood his ground — ready to risk contempt rather than walk away. What followed wasn't just a clash over access, but a moment that reveals why blue-collar grit still matters in American journalism. You need to ask about more than price when you're hauling your boat out at a yard. These are some questions to ask to avoid being unhappy and unable to relaunch your vessel. Summary: You need to ask about more than price when you're hauling your boat out at a yard. These are some questions to ask to avoid being unhappy and unable to relaunch your vessel. That's why you must protect yourself before the boat is hauled. Remember to ask: Can you haul my boat? Some yards have limits. And it's not just size — some will say no to catamarans, no to sailboats, no to wooden boats, or even no boats over a certain age. Does the yard require special prep? Do you have to come in at high tide or back into the lift well? Must you remove your roller-furling headsails first? Ask ahead. Do they allow DIY work? Not all yards do. Can the yard do the work I want done? If you're planning a specific project, confirm the yard has the ability and staff to do it. Do they allow outside contractors? Some yards forbid both DIY work and outside contractors, requiring you to use their in-house staff. If they have a tight schedule or you don't like the work quality, you can end up stuck. How do they handle parts and supplies? Or do you have to use their parts shop and pay a markup? Can you stay on the boat while it's in the yard? Some don't allow it at all. Others charge a fee. And they often lack amenities or have restrictions. If you can't stay on the boat, you have to factor in the cost of accommodations elsewhere. How secure is the yard? Will you and your belongings be secure? Finally, Get written quotes and read the bottom line carefully. What are the Payment terms? And how do they address work you're not happy with? And finally, what is the yard's reputation? Ask around for current references. For more details, listen to the full podcast or check out What to Ask Before Hauling Out.
