Behind Her Empire
Mindset Over Experience: How to Keep Going When the Path Isn't Clear with Nancy Twine, Founder of Briogeo

Behind Her Empire

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2025 55:07

Nancy Twine is the founder of Briogeo, one of the first clean haircare brands to land in Sephora, and eventually one of the fastest-growing in the category. But her story didn't start in beauty. Nancy began her career in finance, landing a role at Goldman Sachs in 2007, right as the global financial crisis hit. By her mid-twenties, she was a VP on Wall Street. Then, everything changed in 2010 when she lost her mother unexpectedly. That moment reshaped her purpose and gave her the clarity to build something of her own. With no background in chemistry or beauty, she started Briogeo from her tiny New York apartment—self-funding it for six years, researching at the public library, and pitching investors with just drawings, all while working full-time. Briogeo launched in 2013 with four products. Within a year, Nancy cold-emailed her way into Sephora, becoming the youngest Black woman to launch a line with the retailer. In 2022, Briogeo was acquired by Wella Company. In today's episode, Nancy talks about the mindset and grit it took to keep going when the path ahead wasn't clear, and how learning to trust her instincts changed everything for her. We talk about how she taught herself the beauty industry from scratch, and why believing in herself, even when the odds were stacked against her, became her greatest strength. She shares the early days of Briogeo, building the brand at night while working on Wall Street, pitching investors and getting many rejections, and navigating the challenges of growth. She also reflects on the pivotal moment with Sephora, the decision to finally walk away from her corporate job, and how she grew into the role of CEO as the company scaled.Nancy opens up about selling Briogeo, what it meant to let go of something she built from scratch, and why she's now focused on mentoring other women founders through her new platform, Makers Mindset. If you've ever questioned your timing, doubted your path, or needed a reminder of what's possible when you bet on yourself, you're going to love this episode. In this episode, we'll talk to Nancy about:* The mindset needed to overcome entrepreneurial challenges. [02:57]* Cultivating confidence and shutting down self-doubt. [05:18]* How her mother and grandmother shaped her upbringing. [07:46]* How personal loss sparked a life and career reevaluation. [17:04]* Nancy's first steps in starting Briogeo. In episode seventy nine of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the founder of HoliFrog, Emily Parr.Emily Parr's career in beauty began when her career in the wellness space saw her headhunted by Salma Hayek.Having worked in fashion and health PR respectively, Salma Hayek's brand was Emily's first beauty client. This led Emily to found Poke PR in late 2012, an agency that would go on to both represent and grow the likes of Drunk Elephant and Glow Journal's friends The Beauty Chef, Summer Fridays and Briogeo- all of which were brands that Emily cold-emailed and pitched to herself. Emily garnered a reputation for being the industry's champion of female-founded, founder-led, clean beauty brands, and is largely responsible for the narrative shift beauty media made away from the term “natural” and replaced with the word “clean.” It was in 2018 that a chance encounter at an industry function saw Emily meet the man who would later become her HoliFrog co-founder, with HoliFrog soon becoming the go-to brand for a product many cosmetic formulators had dubbed “the beauty industry's afterthought”- cleanser. What did begin as a line of facial cleansers has since expanded to serums and a moisturiser, with 4 new launches hitting shelves in the next 12 months. In this conversation, Emily shares the art of the cold email, some truly interesting points on media's shift to digital and what that means for the beauty industry, and the importance of knowing the difference between telling a brand's story vs. sharing a selling point.Read more at glowjournal.comFollow HoliFrog on Instagram @holifrogStay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemkwatts and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Private equity firm VMG Partners has invested in some of beauty's biggest disrupters: Drunk Elephant, Briogeo and Perfect Diary. But the 16-year-old firm didn't have a firm playbook when it first started out, said Robin Tsai, a general partner at VMG who leads the company's beauty and wellness practice. "As a first-time fund, you're really more defined by what works and what doesn't," he said on this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. "You can have all these great theses at that point in time, but it's a lot easier to connect the dots when you're actually looking backward than when you're looking forward. What I would say that we're good at is working with founders. It's just something that was part of our DNA. It probably also came from the fact that we were a startup, as well, so we could really empathize with what people were going through. We found that we were very good with brands and had a certain gut in terms of what consumers really cared about and where they were headed." To date, VMG has realized many of its beauty and wellness investments, including Drunk Elephant, which sold to Shiseido for $845 million in 2019, which is something that Tsai said founders recognize. "We have sold the most businesses of any consumer fund to strategics over the last 15 years. That track record is an important one, and it's something that founders truly care about," he said. And while the investing landscape is changing rapidly, with firms investing earlier and SPACs becoming part of the equation, Tsai said VMG's focus is on "elevating" the businesses it invests in. "Our M.O. is really more about investing deeply within the ecosystem of the categories that we're investing in, so that's food and beverage, beauty and personal care, the wellness space, alcohol and spirits, the pet space. It really is having a super, super deep knowledge of who the stakeholders are, what makes them tick," he said

In episode fifty five of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the founder and CEO of Biogeo, Nancy Twine. Nancy, a former vice president at Goldman Sachs, tells me her very earliest memories of beauty all take place in the kitchen with her mother and grandmother, mixing their own beauty products using a KitchenAid. Nancy tells me that, even as a child, she was aware that there were very few options in the beauty sphere for women of colour like herself, so mixing her own formulas allowed her to have some control, rather than having to rely on whatever products were on the shelf. Nancy revisited this idea and this passion in 2010. She’d been working in a high powered position in finance for upwards of seven years when her mother suddenly and tragically passed away, an incident that made Nancy really closely examine the way she was living her own life. “We owe it to ourselves to align our passions with our careers,” she tells me, and so she revisited that early passion for beauty and began work on her own business- Briogeo. A clean, natural and INCLUSIVE haircare brand, Briogeo is now stocked globally (including in Mecca here in Australia) and reportedly hit something to the tune of $65 million USD in retail sales last year- less than six years after the brand’s 2014 launch. In this conversation, Nancy and I discuss the perils of formulating haircare that’s ACTUALLY natural, her advice for new brand founder on securing investment, and why she has Alicia Silverstone in Clueless to thank for her first foray into entrepreneurship. In 2010, a tragic personal event changed the trajectory of Nancy Twine's life. Suddenly, her promising job on the trading floor at Goldman Sachs no longer seemed fulfilling; she wanted something more. Drawing inspiration from the homemade hair treatments she used to make with her mom, Nancy decided to create a line of shampoos and conditioners that catered to all textures of hair without using harmful additives. But as an African American entrepreneur pitching beauty products to white, male investors, she had a tough time raising money. Finally in 2013, with an investment of $100K, Nancy launched Briogeo, eventually landed it in Sephora, and—even in the midst of an economic crisis—is expecting it to do $40M in sales this year.

Meet the fastest growing hair care brand at Sephora: Briogeo. Today we’re chatting with its brilliant founder, Nancy Twine, a University of Virginia graduate and Goldman Sachs alum. As a woman of colour, she couldn't understand why there wasn’t any natural, non-toxic haircare on the market for all ethnicities and hair textures under one brand. Having whipped up DIY beauty products using avocado oils and butters with her mother and grandmother as a child, clean beauty was also top of mind. She blended the two ideas, and in 2013, Briogeo was born.   But why leave that high paying Wall Street job to begin with? In this episode, Nancy reveals the heart-breaking moment that caused her to re-evaluate everything in her life. She also shares a funny story about a surprising connection she has to Kelly Clarkson. And in the spirit of true #girltalk, we get her personal tips on blow-drying her hair in under 12 minutes, and the story behind that comb that broke the internet.   Jill and Carlene weigh in on why Briogeo’s best-selling Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask is truly a dream for dry, damaged hair. (Super influencers Hannah Bronfman and Ingrid Neilsen are fans of the brand.) Finally, Nancy explains which 6 ingredients you’ll never find in any of her formulations. And we don’t let her go without getting all the deets on why hair supplements are what she’s conquering next – coming this fall.   Special thank you to Amazon for providing Breaking Beauty Podcast with new Bose headphones so we and our guests can now hear ourselves while we record.
