It might feel like terrible news that building our pack leadership involves going back into our own childhoods. It can feel scary to go back to the “belly of the beast”… after all, you survived your childhood. Who on this God's green earth would actually choose to look back when you're so focused on changing cycles and moving forward? When the patterns we're trying to break involve the often invisible trauma of emotional neglect, they can be extra tough to identify. Grownups raised by neglectful parents can feel like their experiences weren't “bad” enough to count, or that they should just feel lucky because other kids had it way worse. My guest this week is Ruth Cohn, an amazing therapist and author who writes about what she calls “the invisible trauma” of neglect. Why it can be hard to realize that neglect IS traumatic, how it affects the way we live, and how much we tend to blame ourselves for things that aren't in our control. If you're a parent who's trying to do better than the way you were raised, you have to hear her wisdom! As always, thanks for listening. Have you ever wondered why we are drawn to people who challenge us the most? In this episode, I sit down with Harville and Helen Hendricks, the minds behind Imago Relationship Therapy, to explore why we unconsciously attract partners who reflect our childhood wounds. We dive into how early experiences shape our relationships, why conflict is not the problem but an opportunity, and how we can create safety and connection instead of distance and frustration. We talk about how the brain is wired for survival, why negativity is the biggest relationship killer, and how structured dialogue can transform the way we connect. Harville and Helen share practical tools to move from blame to understanding, helping us see our differences as a strength, not a weakness. Whether you're single, in a relationship, or struggling to communicate, this episode will shift how you see love and connection. Stick around for a conversation that challenges common myths about relationships and offers real solutions to build deeper intimacy. Plus, we discuss their new project that ensures their work will live on for future generations. If you've ever felt stuck in a relationship pattern, this is an episode you don't want to miss. === GUEST LINKS Instagram: @harvilleandhelen Website: harvilleandhelen.com Taplink: https://taplink.cc/harvilleandhelen === Have you watched our previous episode with my husband, Emilio? What happens when we listen and are listened to more fully, forging a deeper connection? Decades of research tell us that the brain undergoes physiological changes when we begin to “talk without criticizing, listen without judgment, and connect beyond difference.” This is the definition of dialogue coined by today's guests, Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt and Dr. Harville Hendrix. Doctors Hunt and Hendrix are internationally recognized couples therapists, educators, speakers, and a married couple themselves. Through decades of research, they developed the Imago Relationship Therapy method, which is taught to therapists around the globe. Welcome to Episode 122 of the Being Human Podcast: There Is No Real Marriage Therapy On this week's podcast, Dr. Greg continues to uncover issues in the secular field of psychology by breaking open ways that marriage therapy as it exists today lacks what is necessary to truly support married couples. First on the list? Lack of a proper understanding of marriage. Discussed in this episode: The purpose of marriage; How all “marriage therapy” research, publications, modalities, and techniques are not actually focused on marriage; The lack of understanding about what it means to be a man or woman made in God's image in a vocation leading to union with Him; What's missing from Relationship Enhancement Therapy, Gottman Institute research, and Imago Institute theory; Catholic magisterial teaching on marriage vs. misinformation commonly taught; What does it mean that through marriage we're called to become saints? How errors in the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas related to women have impacted our understanding of gender roles; The current demonization of masculinity as a retaliation against the demonization of women in the past; The importance of the complementarity between men and women in marriage; What does a truly Catholic marriage therapy look like? After a little hiatus, Sarah speaks with Jordan Dann, psychoanalyst and relationship coach specializing in somatic therapy and couples therapy. Jordan and Sarah talk about Gestalt therapy, Imago Relationship Therapy, and Somatic Experiencing, the theoretical underpinnings that inform Jordan's work as a couples therapist. There are so many nuggets of wisdom in this episode - whether you're a fellow therapist or a person that is in relation with others (hello, all of us!), this episode has some one liners that calmed my nervous system. In addition to talking theory and science, Jordan also shares some exercises and concepts individuals and couples can do to improve communication and become more attuned with themselves.
