Face to Face, Nikki's new album is out today! As a founder member of the hugely innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra in the early 90s, Nikki Iles came to prominence working with musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Mark Anthony Turnage, Kenny Wheeler and Mike Gibbs.Mike subsequently booked her for one of her first recording dates with great American musicians, Steve Swallow and Bob Moses on the CD “By The Way” on AH HUM records. For many years, Nikki served a lengthy apprenticeship in the North of England playing with the cream of British and American jazz such as Peter King, Iain Ballamy, Art Farmer, Peter King ,Tina May ,Tim Garland and Jim Mullen. Many of these relationships were re- kindled later ,when after a car accident, Nikki finally decided to make the move to London in 1998. Here she joined the groups and toured and recorded with musicians such as Steve Arguelles, Mick Hutton, Martin Speake, Stan Sulzmann and Julian Arguelles and Norma Winstone .Several awards followed with the BT British Jazz Award and an IAJE Award in America for services to Jazz. Although well known as a pianist, composition still remains a major part of her musical life. The breadth of Nikki's artistic vision has led her to disregard the arbitrary boundaries of the jazz scene and most notably, commissions have included a collaboration with American dancer Mimi Cichanowicz , the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Finland, “A Gentle Prayer “ - London Sinfonietta , “Red Ellen” - Tim Garland's Northern Underground Band, “Carillion – The LPO's Renga ensemble and this year “The Caged Bird” from the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers.Nikki was honoured to have her piece HUSH commissioned by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra featured at the 2012 Proms ( BBC TV) and more recently write for the great American singer, Kurt Elling and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.Recently she has been particularly busy - she was awarded the prestigious Ivors Academy Gold Badge and the Ivor Novello Award - winning the best large ensemble composition in 2021.Support the show

Nikki Iles is a pianist, a professor of jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, and a composer. In some ways, I think of her as a British jazz gem, but that would do a disservice to the fact that she's very much loved in other jazz communities around the globe. Her musical work in the UK has seen her become a leading figure in the British jazz tradition. She is known for her collaborations with vocalists Norma Winstone and Tina May, and has expanded her reputation as leader of the Nikki Iles Jazz Orchestra since the ensemble debuted at the 2018 EFG London Jazz Festival. She's worked with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, the WDR Big Band, and led several groups, including The Printmakers comprising a who's-who of British jazz. Most recently, she was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for ‘Services to Music' and an Ivor Novello Jazz Ensemble Composition Prize. We chat about her foray into large ensemble writing, her take on British jazz identity, motherhood, and so much more. Show Notes: Tracklisting: - High Lands (feat. BGM: 《Que reste-t-il》——Tina May 查看原文关注公众号:阿绿酒馆,新浪微博:@少女绿妖

Winnie Greer is an educationalist who is a” Chemistry teacher by day and Jazz diva by night!” She has had a wealth of experience in performing her favourite jazz standards, Ella Fitzgerald being one of her main jazz diva idols. Her experience has ranged from being a runner up in the International Jazz singing competition in 2007 to perform in a range of well-known jazz venues e.g. The Vortex ( Dalston), The Pheasantry ( Chelsea) and The Bull’s Head ( Barnes). She has developed her knowledge and love of jazz standards and this can be seen especially when she presents them in different ways with a lot of feeling and emotion. Having benefited from the generosity and knowledge of many great Jazz tutors through the years e.g. Peter Churchill, Tina May, Anita Wardell and Lee Gibson to mention a few, she now also enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience by teaching individual and group sessions to aspiring vocalists. As well as performing gigs with trios and Big bands, she enjoys working with those individuals who are absolute beginners and need that boost to get their singing started as well as those clients who wish to develop their performance technique. He began as the pianist for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and studied piano under Peter Wallfisch and composition with Philip Cannon at the Royal College of Music (winning the composer's prize). Subsequently he toured America as Cleo Laine's accompanist as a member of the John Dankworth Quintet and became Matt Monro's youngest ever musical director. However, a penchant for cartooning and comedy made his career take some unexpected turns. He invented a character ‘Marvin Hanglider', and for many years performed at the Edinburgh Festival, described in the Scotsman as a ‘fringe staple.' This led to cabaret on many of the world's top cruise liners and tours of India and Europe. Having composed literally thousands of songs over the years, often appearing on BBC Local Radio making up songs on the spot for people who phone in, he is delighted to at last have some of his work published by Kevin Mayhew. Mike drew cartoons for Carlton TV's ‘After the News' and made his own chat show for CTV. He toured as musical director for comedienne Pamela Stephenson, and co-wrote songs with Frankie Howerd and Spike Milligan. For many years he was closely associated with Herbie Flowers (of Sky fame) which included all sorts of work in prisons, in schools and at the Southbank (Mike has also performed his one man show twice at the Purcell Rooms) and in disabled centres. He has also worked with David Essex, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Julia Migenes Johnson, Liane Carroll, Alan Barnes, George Martin and Tina May. Recently his career went full circle when he was asked to compere Cleo Laine's eighty-fifth birthday concert at Wavendon, and also appeared alongside Cleo in the celebrated Christmas Shows to packed audiences. As well as being in demand as a jazz musician and raconteur, Mike plays a good deal of classical music. He regularly does educational and community projects for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and is resident pianist with the Chamber Ensemble of London. He has taught at Trinity College Summer School and Dartington International Summer School as well as at Worth Abbey. Mike recently went back to something he did a lot of in his youth – painting – and has had a few exhibitions mainly on the South Coast. Thanks to Kevin Mayhew for the bio.
