New Orleans began her love affair with coffee three centuries ago. Any local of a certain age can remember the grown-ups of their childhood spending hours around the kitchen table drinking a strong French roast blended with chicory. This week we sit down with a cup of coffee and some folks who can tell us the story of coffee in New Orleans. First, Patrick Brennan, of the famous Brennan restaurant clan, talks about leaving the family business to strike out on his own in the artisan coffee market. Patrick tells us about Congregation Coffee, his roasting business and Algiers Point neighborhood coffee shop. Next, we hear from Suzanne Stone and David Feldman, as we take a deep dive into their book, New Orleans Coffee: A Rich History. They tell the story of coffee in the Crescent City, which came to the forefront in the late 1700s. Finally, we chat with graphic artist Sharon Dunn Dinkins Dymond, who, in the 1970s, discovered a cache of 19th- and early 20th-century product labels that tell the tale of New Orleans' early love affair with coffee. She reproduces the beautiful, chromolithographed labels on postcards and ceramic serving ware for her company, Fabled Labels. Sean Patrick Brennan, D-District 14State Representative Sean Patrick Brennan has dedicated his life to public service. He firmly believes that his story informs his calling to public service and proves that the American Dream survives. After his father abandoned his family, his strong mother modeled the importance of family and the satisfaction of a hard day's work, making their trailer a home and utilizing public assistance only as needed. Sadly, his mother later suffered through an abusive relationship. As a result, Rep. Brennan was blessed when his loving grandmother took him in to help tend the family farm and focus on his studies.Brennan went on to attend the University of Dayton where he graduated summa cum laude earning a Bachelor's Degree in International Studies concentrating in Russian and Soviet Studies. While there, he fell in love with Deena Denk from Parma, where they currently reside and raised their two beautiful children. He has also completed graduate-level coursework in history, political science, economics, and pedagogy at several colleges and universities and has a Master's Degree in Secondary School Administration from Cleveland State University. Brennan's scholarly activities involve projects on the subjects of the U.S. Constitution, religious freedom in America, and various other American political and historical topics at George Washington's Mount Vernon, James Madison's Montpelier, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, the University of Oxford in England, George Washington University in Washington, D.C., the Bill of Rights Institute in Arlington, Virginia, and the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University.Brennan served as an award-winning public school teacher for three decades, as well as a Parma councilman for nearly two decades, including over a decade as the at-large elected President of Council and the Public Housing Board of Ohio's 7th largest city. He is active in civic, professional, and charitable organizations, which include founder and board member of the Andrew Boyko Scholarship Foundation, St. Charles Borromeo Parish lector and adult server, Friends of Parma Libraries life member, founder of the Parma Peanut Butter Drive benefitting All Faiths Pantry, founder and past adviser of the Parma Youth Commission, advisory board member of Big Creek Connects, member of West Creek Conservancy, Parma Historical Society, the City Club of Cleveland, German Central Foundation, National Education Association, Ohio Education Association and Northeast Ohio Education Association. An avid runner and advocate of healthy living, Brennan has completed more than 110 marathons, as well as countless other smaller running events. His love of running led to his creation of the annual Parma Run-Walk for Pierogies, which has raised thousands of dollars for local charities. Among other projects, his charitable work led to the creation of the script Parma sign which was subsequently donated to the City of Parma and adorns Anthony Zielinski Park and raising thousands of dollars to assist residents whose incomes were negatively impacted by the pandemic.Connect with OEA:Email educationmatters@ohea.org with your feedback or ideas for future Public Education Matters topicsLike OEA on FacebookFollow OEA on TwitterFollow OEA on InstagramGet the latest news and statements from OEA hereLearn more about where OEA stands on the issues Keep up to date on the legislation affecting Ohio public schools and educators with OEA's Legislative WatchAbout us:The Ohio Education Association represents nearly 120,000 teachers, faculty members and support professionals who work in Ohio's schools, colleges, and universities to help improve public education and the lives of Ohio's children. We step into the world of our next guest, Patrick Brennan, as we enter his home in Houston on a tranquil Tuesday afternoon. Patrick's journey began in the Tri-City area, where he savored the simple joys of childhood - those carefree days of summer, playing until the street lights signaled it was time to come home.Yet, life's script took a twist as his parents' marriage came to an end, bringing with it complexities that Patrick navigated with resilience. His mother's revelation of her sexuality and the introduction of her partner added layers of uniqueness to his upbringing, reshaping his family dynamics in ways he hadn't anticipated. As Patrick ventured into his twenties, he found himself immersed in the world of music, living the life of a band member with all the allure and challenges that came with it. The rhythm of his days shifted, leading him through a myriad of experiences that would ultimately shape the person he is today.Through candid reflection, Patrick opens up about the profound impact of closure. He shares a touching moment when he was able to mend his relationship with his father before his passing. This pivotal experience appears to have etched a sense of peace, mindfulness, and spiritual growth deep within Patrick's character. His journey stands as a testament to the art of processing life's chapters, internalizing the lessons they offer, and using them as tools for empowerment.Join us as we sit down with the remarkable Patrick, whose youthful exterior holds the wisdom of an old soul. His story radiates with insights and a palpable sense of serenity, inspiring us to embrace life's twists and turns, transforming them into stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. Patrick Brennan didn't have a transition strategy. He simply knew that it was time to “Cut away” from the security and comfort of a Special Forces career, and pray like hell that he'd figure it out. Lucky for us, he did. Working within Special Forces is a dream come true, but when it's time to leave many individuals struggle with letting go of the comfort that comes with staying stagnant and refusing to do the hard work of personal growth and discovery. Patrick jumped head first into his transition. Stumbling at first with jobs and positions that weren't quite right. Ultimately, through his hard work and determination Patrick found his way and his purpose in his current position working in finance If you want to learn more about Patrick and what he does, CLICK HERE and don't forget to check out his podcast AFTER SOF If you love what we do and want to support the cause, don't forget to LIKE, SHARE, AND SUBSCRIBE! We are back in the home studio, and talking baseball. After a quick update on my dad, we went into the mailbag and answered questions about trades and prospects. We continue digging into the mailbag and answering questions about the Cleveland Guardians. We end by looking at some interesting data from Patrick Brennan, @paintingcorner which allows us to talk about old names and also take a look at how the minor league system is doing in terms of development. The Boys begin to discuss Joel discovering a new species of mushroom before jumping into a discussion of the merits of psilocybin mushrooms and meditation. Join Joel Greene, husband, father, engineer, & designer of biohacking gear that helps guys level up their hormones (www.primalcold.com & www.optimusred.com) Joel is a contrarian thinker who also known for discovering a new species of mushroom. & Patrick Brennan an independent seeker, creator of Whole Body Vibration Yoga the founder of Vibetality, Sacred Plant Co, and 5th and Arcadia. These days if you follow society's playbook for life you're set up to be a victim or at least hustled to some degree out of time, money, connection, health, the meaning of life. To thrive today you've got to ignore many of the mainstream narratives, sometimes you may have to go against the narratives altogether. In doing this, you may appear to others as stupid and even conspiratorial - concerned with things that most deem not worthy of consideration.
To be crowned the best in the world must be a good feeling! [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/12/16122736/PatrickBrennan_1612.mp3"][/audio] We have all dreamed of being the best in the world at whatever it is we put our hands to. Well, Patrick was recently crowned the world champion in his field. Patrick Brennan from Brennan Knives in Kilkenny beat knife makers from all around the world to win an award last month. The world champion joined Dermot and Dave to chat about his award and what brought him into the craft and he has one hell of a story. You can see some of Patrick's brilliant work here. Joel and Patrick discuss a rethinking of community. Maybe these judgments make a person insecure. This is the burden of the wise fool. Taking an invisible path isn't easy, but it can be exhilarating. The pursuit of uncommon information, views, practices & maybe even secret knowledge or a discovery - this is where the fun comes in. This can also be where hope is found. Empowering yourself by trying new things & taking responsibility for improving your life creates hope. The path truly is invisible because you won't know the results until you try things for yourself. Accepting the uncertainty of outcome is a piece of knowledge the wise fool gains. The wise fool is willing to try things and view the world in a way that few would admit to. Striving for self-improvement is a vulnerable admission that things aren't working (or at least could be better). Most people feel better sticking with the tried and (used to be) true paths. The invisible path is sometimes exotic, but often mundane. The wise fool finds hope in both new and old, forgotten perspectives repurposed for today's world. It's hard to stay sane in an insane world so we slip down a secret, invisible path into a better life.
