The Trombone Corner
Episode #36 Michael Dease

The Trombone Corner

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2025 82:15

The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark. Come watch the Los Angeles Brass Alliance (LAB-A) at 7PM on May 4th at Glendale First baptist Church for their second installation of Next Up! This free concert (generously sponsored by Bob Reeves Brass) spotlights LAB-A's annual collaboration between emerging LA-based composers and brass musicians.  Learn more at: www.labrassalliance.org. Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Michael Dease, commercial trombonist from Los Angeles. About Michael: Michael Dease is one of the world's eminent trombonists, lending his versatile sound and signature improvisations to over 200 recordings and groups as diverse as Grammy winning artists David Sanborn, Christian McBride, Michel Camilo, and Alicia Keys. Born in Augusta, GA, he played the saxophone and trumpet before choosing the trombone at age 17. In 2001, Dease moved to New York City to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School, earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees, and quickly established a reputation as a brilliant soloist, sideperson, and bandleader.   Best Next Thing (Posi-Tone, 2022), Dease's newest release, his ninth on Posi-Tone, gathers together an assemblage of exceptional musicians to help him interactively explore the essence of the blues and reframe the abstract truths of jazz as the "Best Next Thing "for today's audience of listeners. Dease, the winner of the 69th Annual DownBeat Magazine Poll for Trombonist of the Year and multi-Grammy award winner, is also a sought-after lead, section and bass trombonist with today's leading jazz orchestras. His experiences include bands led by Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Rufus Reid, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. However, it is on the frontline of quintets and sextets led by master musicians like The Heath Brothers, Winard Harper, Renee Rosnes, Bill Charlap, Claudio Roditi, and Lewis Nash, where Dease has revitalized the trombone's image. Not content to simply improvise, Dease arranges and composes for many different bands, constantly adjusting his tone and timbre to add just the right flavor to the music. Dease's unique blend of curiosity, hard work and optimism has helped him earn worldwide recognition, including awards from ASCAP, The International Trombone Association, Yamaha, Eastern Trombone Workshop, New York Youth Symphony, Hot House Magazine, Michigan State University, among others. Dease was profiled in Cicily Janus' book, The New Face of Jazz: An Intimate Look at Today's Living Legends (Random House). His experience in the studio has led him to produce several recording sessions for emerging artists, often composing and writing liner notes for the releases. Dease's singular talent has made him an effective and prolific teacher, resulting in invitations, master classes and residencies at University of North Texas, Scranton University, University of Iowa, Florida State College, Broward College, and many institutions abroad. He serves as Professor of Jazz Trombone at the renowned Michigan State University jazz program and has also been on faculty at Queens College - CUNY, The New School and North-eastern University. Many of Dease's current and former students are enjoying successful careers in the music world. Always an informed, but forward-thinking musician, Dease learned the craft from trombone legends Wycliffe Gordon and Joseph Alessi. His associations have run the entire spectrum of musical experience: Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra, Elton John, Neal Diamond, Illinois Jacquet, Slide Hampton & The World of Trombones, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, WDR Big Band, George Gruntz, Billy Harper, and numerous others. Dease enjoys spending every possible minute with his extraordinary wife and Professor of Percussion at MSU, Gwendolyn Dease, and their daughters Brooklyn & Charley. Michael Dease is a Yamaha Performing Artist and uses Pickett Brass and Vandoren mouthpieces exclusively. View Michael's All Music Guide entry here for a partial listing of his sideperson credits and discography.

Send us your thoughts! The members of all-star family jazz band The 3 Cohens — featuring Anat Cohen (clarinet), Avishai Cohen (trumpet) and Yuval Cohen (soprano saxophone) — have always taken time out from their ever-burgeoning careers as soloists and bandleaders to reconvene for music-making together. The siblings developed a deep musical bond growing up in Tel Aviv, with improvising together becoming second nature for them. The 3 Cohens recorded four studio albums over a decade: 2003's One, 2007's Braid, 2011's Family and 2013's Tightrope, with the last three released by Anzic Records, the indie label founded by Anat with kindred-spirit producer-collaborator Oded Lev-Ari. DownBeat put The 3 Cohens — with Anat the middle child to the elder Yuval and younger Avishai — on the cover of its January 2012 issue, hailing the trio's “chemistry, alchemy, telepathy.” Ten years on from that milestone, the 3 Cohens reunited for a live collaboration with Germany's lauded WDR Big Band (a Köln-based ensemble that has been performing jazz on West German Radio since 1957); the program showcased tailormade arrangements by Lev-Ari of compositions by himself and each member of The 3 Cohens, as well as two of their favorite classics: Gerry Mulligan's “Festive Minor” and the Louis Armstrong hit “Tiger Rag.” The performance was recorded for a very special live album, Interaction. Support the show

ALEX, was eine Frage. Instagram:@dorico@steinbergmedia@andyschreck_Supporter:Doricohttps://www.steinberg.net/de/dorico/Kostenlose YouTube-Serie zu Dorico:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoyaeouPUsduqbbROeQhXc0TJtGjbjLDABuffet Cramponwww.buffetcrampon.comInstagram: @showroom_munichWoodstock Academyhttps://www.woodstockacademy.at/Instagram: @woodstockacademyWie du mich unterstützen kannst?- Podcast abonnieren- Newsletter abonnieren  -> Air-Mail - Werde Patron -> www.patreon.com/andyschreckSchnitt: Leander MachanMusik: Dirk Mattes

New York Voices are a jazz vocal quartet comprising four of my favourite musicians and people-Darmon Meader, Lauren Kinhan, Kim Nazarian, and Peter Eldridge. They've been described as “the gold standard for jazz vocals”, “timeless”, and “masters of their art.” They recently celebrated their 34th birthday and seem to go from strength to strength. Collaborations with Bob Mintzer, and the WDR Big Band are peppered throughout a touring career that has seen them perform on stages all over Europe, the USA, the UK, Israel and Asia. How do they do it? Why do they still do it? And what do they love about being part of a working band that continues to create at the highest standard? Well, listen to our conversation to discover the answers to those burning questions and so much more. Nikki Iles is a pianist, a professor of jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, and a composer. In some ways, I think of her as a British jazz gem, but that would do a disservice to the fact that she's very much loved in other jazz communities around the globe. Her musical work in the UK has seen her become a leading figure in the British jazz tradition. She is known for her collaborations with vocalists Norma Winstone and Tina May, and has expanded her reputation as leader of the Nikki Iles Jazz Orchestra since the ensemble debuted at the 2018 EFG London Jazz Festival. She's worked with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, the WDR Big Band, and led several groups, including The Printmakers comprising a who's-who of British jazz. Most recently, she was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for ‘Services to Music' and an Ivor Novello Jazz Ensemble Composition Prize. Saxophonist Matt Carmichael has been making a big impression on audiences since he emerged on the Scottish jazz scene as a teenager with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. No longer a teen, his debut album “Where Will The River Flow” was released in March 2021 and caught the attention of the WDR Big Band and Bob Mintzer, who has arranged the entire album for the band with Matt as a featured soloist. This concert will take place in March 2022 if you're lucky enough to be in Germany then.
