Matt Bair and Ryan Hedrick discuss how everyday household items can be used as drug paraphernalia. They cover items like PVC pipes, spoons, and even fruit. The episode is about helping caregivers recognize these things, but the focus is on behavior changes as the real warning signs. Instead of getting caught up in objects, pay attention to how your loved one is acting. Timestamps & Key Takeaways: 5:35 - 6:38: Ryan shares how he and his friends used bounce sheets and toilet paper rolls to trick their parents and hide their drug use. 6:50 - 8:09: Matt talks about early warning signs of someone starting to use drugs or alcohol. Look out for shifts in behavior or routines. 8:13 - 9:06: Matt's “favorite” paraphernalia was an empty liquor bottle—highlighting how addicts can get attached to these objects. 9:15 - 11:15: Matt shares how his “dealer” was just the liquor store, and Ryan talks about the distinct smell of cocaine. 11:39 - 12:30: Fentanyl can be odorless, making it harder to detect. The paraphernalia used for fentanyl can vary widely. 12:44 - 15:15: Toiletry items are often repurposed for smoking weed. Addicts get creative fruit, like apples and oranges, can also be used for drug use. 15:16 - 16:07: Money is a common tool for people ingesting drugs like cocaine or other powders. 16:08 - 17:30: Spoons are often linked to heroin use. Check the bottom of spoons—if it's burnt, it could be a sign of use. 17:45 - 18:15: Matt describes how a mask can be used to inhale substances and get high. 18:20 - 19:30: Ryan shares his experience using a light bulb to smoke drugs. 19:40 - 21:00: A "bullet" is a small container that holds cocaine, making it easy to conceal. Caregivers should be aware of this item. 21:00 - 24:00: Visine and sunglasses can also be signs—used to hide bloodshot eyes or dilated pupils. 25:15: Closing Thoughts—Stay aware of behavior changes more than objects. Paraphernalia can be anything, but how your loved one acts is always the best indicator. Resources: You can find us on X and Instagram: @sobriety_pod. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 21, 2024 is: paraphernalia pair-uh-fuh-NAIL-yuh noun Paraphernalia can refer to objects or items that are used to do a particular activity, as well as objects or items that are typically associated with a particular activity, subject, etc. The word can also refer generally to personal belongings. // Jordan's childhood bedroom was filled with hockey paraphernalia. // After weeks of packing up all our paraphernalia, we hit the road and headed to our new home. See the entry > Examples: "Attendees schmoozed as they shopped the silent auction items which included sports paraphernalia, sports, entertainment, and vacation packages, and more." — Barbara Hendel, The Toledo (Ohio) Blade, 28 Mar. 2024 Did you know? Today, paraphernalia is typically encountered in its "equipment" and "accessories" senses in such common contexts as "fishing paraphernalia," "music paraphernalia," and "drug paraphernalia." But the word hasn't always been used in these ways. Originally, paraphernalia referred to property that a married woman owned herself, as distinct from her husband's property or the dowry she brought to the marriage. Paraphernalia came to English, via Medieval Latin, from the Greek term parapherna, meaning "bride's property beyond her dowry" (from para-, meaning "beyond," and phernē, meaning "dowry"). Although paraphernalia was plural in Medieval Latin, it can take either a singular or plural verb in English; in other words, both "coffee paraphernalia lines the café's shelves" and "coffee paraphernalia line the café's shelves" are acceptable.

Tonight's Jazz Feature is an album done in early 1968 which demonstrates the Miles was about to make some changes in his music. It was basically his "Second Great Quintet" with some new twists. The band as most already know was Davis with Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and the incredible Tony Williams on drums. The first tune called "Stuff" by Miles is indicative that changes were in the wind as Miles asked Herbie Hancock to play electric piano and Ron Carter to switch to electric bass. The other three tunes are all acoustic however the second tune by Wayne Shorter called "Paraphernalia" adds a guest in the person of guitarist George Benson. Tune #3 is a Tony Williams tune called "Black Comedy" and the final tune is by Miles and called "Country Son". Change was in the air as Miles Davis was moving on to another phase of his musical odyssey . Check out "Miles In The Sky" tonight and enjoy!
Send us a Text Message.Unsure about North Carolina's changing marijuana laws and whether you can still get into trouble? You're not alone. That's why Shoresides is analyzing police records to uncover who's still being penalized for marijuana possession and why.In May, the federal government advanced a measure that'd remove marijuana from the most restricted drugs list. But in North Carolina, the situation is more complex. Small amounts of recreational marijuana have been decriminalized for decades, making it quasi-legal to carry a half-ounce or less and pay a $200 fine. Police officers have the option to issue citations for larger quantities. Additionally, Hemp stores in North Carolina now openly sell “hemp” products containing small and legal amounts of Delta 9 THC, and there's an ongoing effort–Senate Bill 711– to legalize marijuana here for medical use.Despite the progress, marijuana enforcement remains a concern for community members, particularly in cities like Wilmington, where officers file several hundred marijuana charges per year. Public records obtained by Shoresides show that from 2016 to 2023, the Wilmington Police Department (WPD) filed over 5,000 marijuana charges, with roughly 84 percent filed as misdemeanors and the majority– 70 percent–for minor marijuana infractions like possession of more than a half ounce or paraphernalia, according to a Shoresides analysis. “In North Carolina marijuana possession is still illegal,” Lieutenant Willet Greg, a spokesperson for the department told Shoresides in an email. “Is it a priority or something we are focusing resources on? No it is not, social norms change and over time the laws enacted by the legislative branch of government typically catch up with those norms.” All of the infractions turned over to Shoresides through our public records request involved amounts of marijuana that were equal to or in excess of a half-ounce. But that doesn't mean the department has ceased penalizing people for carrying less, Willet explained. Data related to those charges aren't readily accessible. “In order to find data for anyone charged with below a half ounce of marijuana it would require our one analyst to go through every marijuana arrest within those years. That is due to the way the law is written regarding amounts of marijuana and how the data is retained within our records system,” he said. “I'm sure there are people that have been charged with that amount.”In October 2016, a 12-year-old identified in a police report as an African-American male was arrested for marijuana possession and paraphernalia at Williston Middle School. (Paraphernalia might be anything from a plastic baggie to a glass pipe.) In July 2023, a 33-year-old identified in a police report as a white female employed by John Metts Insurance, was arrested on roughly the same charges at a local hotel. Sometimes at Tibetan Buddhist teachings or Tantric Initiations, attendees receive an envelop filled with sacred substances. Today we are joined by Dr. James Gentry to discuss the history, function and efficacy of one of the most famous substances—Mani pills. These pills are made through the process of meditation by special Buddhist Yogis and Yoginis, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama. So what are they and why should we care? James Gentry is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University's School of Humanities and Sciences. He specializes in Tibetan Buddhism, with particular focus on the literature and history of its Tantric traditions. He is the author of Power Objects in Tibetan Buddhism: The Life, Writings, and Legacy of Sokdokpa Lodrö Gyeltsen, which examines the roles of Tantric material and sensory objects in the lives and institutions of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhists. James's research ranges across Tibetan and Himalayan intellectual history, material culture, contemplative and ritual practice, and scriptural translation, revelation, and canonicity, from the Tibetan imperial period to the present. His current projects include a study of the reception in Tibet from the 9th century to the present of the “Five Protectors” (Pañcarakṣā)—a set of five Indian Tantric Buddhist texts that have been among the most popular scriptures used for pragmatic purposes throughout the Buddhist world. James is also doing a study of a comprehensive literary treatment of Himalayan religious material culture: a 20th century compilation entitled A Treatise on the Paraphernalia and Musical Instruments of the Old School of Secret Mantra. His work on this compilation is directed toward the creation of a multimedia encyclopedia of Tibetan Buddhist material culture for use among scholars, teachers, and students of Asian religions. Before joining Stanford, James was on the faculty of the University of Virginia. He has also taught at Rangjung Yeshe Institute's Centre for Buddhist Studies at Kathmandu University, where he served as director of its Master of Arts program in Translation, Textual Interpretation, and Philology. He has also served as editor-in-chief of the project 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha, which aims to commission English translations of the Buddhist sūtras, tantras, and commentaries preserved in Tibetan translation and publish them in an online open-access forum 84000.com.

Laws aimed at controlling drug paraphernalia can end up harming efforts to prevent overdoses. Jeff Singer explains. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In two recent decisions, the CIT found importers were authorized under Washington State law to import certain paraphernalia. In doing so, the CIT has brought much needed clarity to what is required to trigger the Section 863 exemption on the statute's prohibition of importation of drug paraphernalia.

State‐level drug paraphernalia laws increase the risk of infection or overdose for drug users by preventing legal access to clean needles, syringes, and products to test drugs for deadly contaminants. Every state except Alaska criminalizes the possession and/or sale of illicit drug paraphernalia. Thus, Alaskans can legally operate needle exchange programs and other harm‐reduction measures. Recognizing that harm‐reduction strategies reduce overdoses and disease, many states are considering reforms to their drug paraphernalia laws. To discuss the impact of drug paraphernalia laws on health and how states can implement better rules, we are pleased to have Corey S. Davis, the director of the Harm Reduction Legal Project of the Network for Public Health Law and adjunct faculty at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University; Robin Lutz, executive director of the Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association, which has provided harm‐reduction services in Alaska since 1985; and Haley B. Coles, executive director of Sonoran Prevention Works, which has been engaged in harm‐reduction and syringe services in Arizona since 2010. The discussion will be moderated by Cato Institute senior fellow Jeffrey A. Singer. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
State and federal laws governing "drug paraphernalia" make it more difficult to set up and operate private programs to get people clean needles and other services. Jeff Singer explains. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
