Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope all of you had a safe, restful, fun, and restorative holiday break. Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Here are a few for your consideration to help finish out first semester strong:  Attend on-time, every day. Unless your child is too sick for school, it is very important that they show up each day so they are able to fully access their instruction. Regular, on-time attendance is a key measure of academic success.  Stay healthy. Colds, flu, COVID, and RSV are still circulating. Practicing good health hygiene habits will help keep you feeling your best: wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizer, avoid contact with people who are sick, cover coughs and sneezes, drink plenty of water, and get lots of rest. If you do become ill, please stay home until you meet the criteria outlined in our Too Sick for School? document and are feeling better. Please also consider vaccination.  Get help if you need it. If your child is struggling with understanding the content or an assignment in a particular class, they should ask their teacher for help. Several schools also have homework help available from peers or other staff members, either during or outside of school hours. In addition, our Hillsboro Public Libraries offer two different resources: K-8th grade students can drop in at Shute Park Library on Mondays from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tutoring is available in English and Spanish. Older students, and those who want to receive help online, can login to the Washington County Cooperative Library Services website and receive live help on most days from 1 to 10 p.m. through Brainfuse.  Our Featured Students are our Student Representatives to the School Board: Hadley Brathapan from Hilhi, RJ Panlilio from Glencoe, and Aliannah Shalikar from Oak Street Campus. This is the sixth year student representatives have served on the School Board, offering their valuable and insightful voices and perspectives to our elected Board members. Check out the video on our website to learn more about them, and watch for the 2024-25 application this spring - available to rising juniors and seniors attending Century, Liberty, and Hillsboro Online Academy. On Wednesday, May 10th the State of Oregon announced that in alignment with the federal government ending the COVID-19 public health emergency on Thursday, May 11th they would be lifting health-protective measures related to COVID-19. Some of these changes are effective immediately, and others will take effect in the coming weeks. Here is a summary of the changes as they pertain to school and district staff and students. Vaccination Requirements - As of Saturday, June 17th, 2023 school staff and volunteers are no longer required to either provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or request a religious or medical exception. The vaccination/exception requirement remains in effect for any new hires/volunteer approvals between now and June 16th.   Exposure and Isolation Guidance - Effective immediately, a five-day period of isolation for those infected with COVID-19 is no longer recommended for the general population, including people in K-12 education settings. Instead, students or staff members who are ill should follow the Too Sick for School/Work guidelines and stay home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication and other symptoms are improving.  School Health and Isolation Rooms - Isolation Rooms will remain in place through the end of this school year as spaces where students who are ill can await pick-up from their family/caregiver. Health Rooms will be used for routine medication administration, minor wound care, and other illnesses that cannot be categorized as a communicable disease - for example: upset stomach, headache, and so on.  COVID-19 Tests - Schools will still have access to COVID-19 test kits to send home with families who request them until our current supply has been depleted.  Mask wearing will remain optional for students and staff, and is still recommended for those who are returning to school/work after a COVID-19 infection. Staying current on COVID vaccinations is also strongly encouraged.  Our Featured Event was our Proud to be HSD Festival on Saturday, May 13th. What a beautiful and fantastic day we had! Everything went off without a hitch and we were thrilled to see so many students, staff, families, and community members interacting with and celebrating our students. We are already planning for next year's Festival, which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 12th, 2024 and if you know of any student garage bands - send them our way! We're trying to arrange an old-school battle of the bands as part of the festivities! There will be no school for all students on Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day. Please enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday weekend! Oregon's June Economic and Revenue forecast was released on Wednesday, May 17th. The forecast showed another surge in tax collections and resources available for the 2023-25 biennium, which presents an opportunity for Legislators to appropriate $10.3 billion to the State School Fund. This is the level that would meet Current Service Level in all school districts across the state. Learn more on the Budget Matters page of our website. Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is a common eye infection that presents at pediatrician offices and often keeps kids out of school or daycare. Although conjunctivitis is commonly caused by viral infections, there are other reasons why a patient might get pink eye. As a pediatric provider, it is essential to understand the signs and symptoms of pink eye and to weigh the risks and benefits of prescribing antibiotics. This episode discusses the treatment of conjunctivitis and the role pediatricians play in antibiotic stewardship.   Guest: Nicole Poole, MD, is an assistant professor of pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Colorado and the Associate Medical Director of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program at Children's Hospital Colorado.   Episode resources:  Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) website: https://cdphe.colorado.gov/child-care-health-regulations How Sick is Too Sick? Happy New Year! We hope you all enjoyed a restful and fun winter break and are ready to start 2023 strong. Although the 2022 calendar year has ended, cold and flu season has not. COVID-19, the flu, RSV, and other respiratory viruses are circulating broadly in our community. While there is no single preventive measure that can guarantee you or your child(ren) or other family members will not get sick, there are many things you can do to stay healthier and to limit the spread of diseases. Get vaccinated against COVID-19 and the Flu Wash and sanitize your hands often Cover your coughs and sneezes Avoid close contact with people who are ill Stay home if you are sick Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated, and Consider wearing a face covering indoors If you have any questions about whether or not your child is too sick to attend school, please reference the Too Sick for School flyer on our website. If you are unsure if your child meets the guidelines for missing school due to illness, feel free to reach out to the district nurse assigned to your child's school or contact the COVID Resource Team at 503-844-1784. So far this school year, we have been extremely fortunate to have not been put in a position where we needed to close a classroom or a school because of excessive illness and absenteeism. With all of us working together in observing good health hygiene habits, we hope that will continue to be the case. If your child is healthy, it is very important that they attend school so they are able to fully access their instruction. Regular, on-time attendance is a key measure of academic success. Our Featured Event was the swearing in of a Hilhi graduate as the state's new Labor Commissioner. In the November 8th, 2022 general election, 2001 Hilhi graduate Christina Stephenson won the statewide vote to become Oregon's next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries. This nonpartisan position is tasked with protecting the rights of workers, encouraging and enforcing compliance with state laws, and promoting the development of a highly skilled, competitive workforce. She chose as the backdrop for her swearing-in ceremony on Friday, December 16th, an engineering classroom at her alma mater. The class is taught by former Intel Engineer Wayne Clift, in a true nod to what it means to prepare students for the real jobs they will be entering upon graduation. We are proud to see our alumni going on to do amazing things! Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. This week, four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke—who in addition to being an acclaimed actor, writer, and director happens also to be a hardcore Willie nerd—discusses “Too Sick to Pray,” a meditative hymn from Willie's beautiful, pin-drop quiet 1996 album, Spirit. Ethan says the song and album were touchstones for him when he first became a father in the late 90s, before going on to describe the way Willie's music connected him with his own dad as a kid, peppering his memories with digressions on Bob Dylan, Henri Matisse, Johnny Cash, Dead Poets Society...and earlobes. Oh and he also explains why he thinks a Willie Nelson biopic has to be set in the here and now.

Episode 39 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at midnight on 11  October 2019.  It marks a change in the way the show is recorded in that the songs are submitted upfront.  This means any changes to the playlist on the night are impossible unless by some miracle the song is in the stations' data base.  It makes requests tricky.  Requests don't form a huge part of TSORR Radio Show however listeners often submit excellent ideas that add a good energy to the show.  The new method for requests is to find the track on YouTube which is a lottery, you never know what the quality will be like or how many surprises are in a track you haven't reviewed.  The first taste of this method is about two-thirds of the way through, and it was certainly a strange one that cut and shifted and had phones ringing in it.  I left it as-is for the purity of the show.  It going to be better in future if I know what the track is like upfront. Everything else was 100% fun, pretty much what you'd expect from this show.  The new stuff came from Hell Fire, Black Star Riders, Backyard Babies and Tom Keifer.  I don't think we went back further than 1982 this week, I ran out of time and the Rory Gallagher from 1974 got bumped.  In fact, The Damned of all bands represented the 70's.  Local music was covered by Crash Car Burn and Johnathan Martin, the weeks outlier was Alabama 3 with Too Sick to Pray.  It was the most appreciated track of the night according to the WhatsApp line.   Artists featured this week included Dio, ACDC, Rainbow, Monster Truck, David Lee Roth, The Damned, Tom Petty, Rammstein, Sammy Hagar, David Bowie, Judas Priest, Black Star Riders, Joan Jett, Damn Yankees, Hell Fire, Amon Amarth, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Sixx:A.M., Alabama 3, Johnathan Martin, Megadeth, Crash Car Burn, Tom Keifer, Backyard Babies & Buckcherry with Papa Roach.
