S7E3 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 Jan 2024. It ended up being one of my favourite shows ever. The end was gloriously spontaneous, and the people tuned in were just awesome. Going round the world in 40 min at the end of the show was amazing, unplanned and a great way to say goodnight. The Immortals track in the episode was Rainbow's ‘Light in the Black'. This comes off the Rising album, one of the greatest albums to come out of the ‘70s This weeks Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘C'. The four albums were Chickenfoot III, London Calling, Blast Tyrant, and Electric: The tracks played were. This is a special episode. The Story of Rock and Roll turned Six. On 12 Dec 2017, the first-ever TSORR aired from the Mix 93.8 FM Studios in Midrand Johannesburg. Six years later to the day, S6E51 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 12 Dec 2023. The world has changed, and my life has changed so it is good to know that the music has not. The episode was a celebration of the bands and the songs that make the show what it is. Thank you all for your support, wherever you are and whoever you are I am deeply grateful for your support. I will continue to make sure that the show delivers the music that you have come to know it for years to come. We skipped the Diabolical Challenge this week due to the birthday bash. There were just too many bands and songs to recognize. I had 9 hours of music (123 songs) that somehow ended up in a 3 hour 34 song show. We made up for it with the Immortals feature where we needed the time. The number 2112 is sacred to the show so to celebrate the 6-year anniversary on the exact date the show started 12 December i.e. 21 12 we took a listen to the title track of Rush's masterpiece ‘2112' Artists featured: Sixx A.M., John Paul Young, Van Halen, Cold Chisel, Deep Purple, James Reyne, Scorpions, KISS, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Joe Jackson, The Boomtown rats, Audioslave, Matthew Good Band, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, ACDC, Foo Fighters, The Stranglers, The Clash, Rush, Guns ‘n' Roses, Megadeth, Mötley Crüe, Hinder, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Lyzyrd Kyngz, Mötorhead, The Uninvited. S6E48 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 30 Nov 2023. All last week's technical problems were sorted and we had a hassle-free show other than the fact that I forgot to turn on the inverter before load shedding which took us off air for 5 min. The podcast is fine but that's what that was about when I mentioned it. The show kicked off and closed off with KISS. This amazing band are largely responsible for my love for rock and metal. As detailed in the Book The Story of Rock and Roll, once I heard KISS for the first time I was hooked forever. KISS are playing their last show on 2 Dec 2023 and that will be at Madison Square Gardens. After that, it's the end of KISS as a live act. That is what the band are saying whether or not they will ever do a one-off who knows The Immortals track this week was ‘The King Will Come' off Wishbone Ash's career highwater mark Argus. Amazing track by an amazing band. Episode 43 went out pre-recorded as I was in the Maldives. The show aired at 19h00 on 26 October 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. Epidose 40 of Season 6 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 5 October 2023. It has been six long years since we lost Tom Petty, hard to believe, such a tragedy. Epidose was a typo but it is quite cool so I will keep it instead of Episode, hopefully not getting Alzheimer's, I have only been retired for a month, seems a bit quick. The show kicked off with Airbourne and a track called Raise the Flag. And that is what we did, raised the flag for rock and roll for 180 minutes. Check out the artists featured list below to see who we played, it's sequential if you are looking for something in particular. One of the most enjoyable Rock Reviews I have done. Also one of the most commented on. I really got deeply into what Sixx A.M. has done and listened to a lot of interviews and watched the documentary mentioned in the review. James Michael and DJ Ashba add their talent to the charisma and drive of Nikki Sixx. Sixx A.M. contrasts the light and the dark in a way that few artists can do. Check it out. Episode 33 of Season 6 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 17 Aug 2023. It was a ripper due to me having a great day and a lot of people tuned in. We started off with the ‘No Lullaby' the opening track off Jethro Tull's incredibly strong live album Bursting Out. The show had plenty of variety this week, check out the artists featured below, you should find something you dig, hopefully, a lot. The Immortals this week featured a track called 'Battle Hymns' by the mighty Manowar. This was the title track off their 1982 release, an album that did really well for them. We stayed with the '80s and checked out 1981 for this week's Diabolical Challenge. The albums and tracks selected were: ACDC: For Those About To Rock – ‘For Those About To Rock'Ozzy Osbourne: Diary of a Madman – ‘Over The Mountain'Iron Maiden: Killers – ‘Murders In The Rue Morgue'Rush: Moving Pictures – ‘Red Barchetta' For once we had a clear favorite, Rush's Moving pictures was the album most chosen as the one to be taken if you could only have one. In other news Philistine's debut album has been unbanned and we took a listen to 'Black Mamba'. The album is produced by Theo Crous who has done a great job. On this track in particular Dean Smith shows his amazing ability to generate the feeling of the snake moving, its quite eerie, and incedibly effective. We heard new stuff from Danko Jones and Corey Taylor as well. Check it out and feel free to comment on any of the TSORR social media sites. I am deeply appreciative of the time you spend on TSORR. Artists featured: Jethro Tull, 3 Gun Whisky, Billy Idol, Danko Jones, Left Lane Cruiser, Saxon, Def Leppard, Metallica, Five Finger Death Punch, Rose Tattoo, The Angels, Rammstein, Queensrÿche, Shinedown, Linkin Park, Nita Strauss & Lzzy Hale, Corey Taylor, Mammoth WVH, Van Halen, Rory Gallagher, The Black Crowes, The Stranglers, Gary Numan, Sixx A.M. Welcome to episode 21 of Season 6. The show went out on Rebel Rock Radio on 25 May 2023. It was pre-recorded as I was away in a wonderful little town called Sedgefield somewhere along the Garden Route in the Western Cape. I listened in and chatted to the people and it was a very cool show. We kicked off with Orange Goblin, they made their TSORR debut with ‘Save Me From Myself'. I will be playing much more Orange Goblin in the future, Ben Ward and the lads know how to rock. From there it was all slash-and-burn up-tempo stuff like Jørn, L.A. Guns and Ace Frehley with ‘In Pursuit of Rock ‘n' Roll. https://yourlastrites.com/2016/07/26/diamonds-and-rust-exploring-metal-classics-riot-fire-down-under/ I had a great chat with Justin VR and it was really interesting to talk to him. We took a listen to his brand new single ‘She Said'. Justin is described as country alt-rock so we stayed in a related area and checked out a guy who is new to me followed by a guy who is definitely not new to me. I am talking Jelly Roll and Kid Rock respectively. After that, we needed a bit of metal so Exodus and Gojira were called into the ring to break some heads. Near the end of the show, we checked out some interesting cover songs, Longview, which is a Bily Joe Armstrong side project, and Chris Cornell with a very interesting mix-up of the lyrics from Metallica and U2 in his version of the U2 track ‘One'. Chris committed suicide on 18 May 2017, this track was recorded in 2015. RIP Chris, you are missed. This week's Immortals track was provided by one of my favourite bands ever The Stranglers. We checked out 7:58 of the final track of their debut album Rattus Norvegicus. JJ Burnell and Dave Greenfield are superb throughout. For the Ultimate Challenge, we had a look at 2011 and the four albums chosen were Chickenfoot – III, Foo Fighters – Wasting Light, Sixx A.M. – This Is Gonna Hurt, and Five Finger Death Punch. It was a toss-up between Foo Fighters and Chickenfoot. Artists featured: Orange Goblin, Jørn, Megadeth, L.A. Guns, Ace Frehley, Grand Funk Railroad, ACDC, Korn, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Van Halen, Tom Keifer, Triumph, Rush, Riot, Sinner, Texas Hippie Coalition, Circus of Power, Justin VR, Jelly Roll, Kid Rock, Exodus, Gojira, The Stranglers, Five Finger Death Punch, Chickenfoot, Sixx A.M. Episode 3 of Season 6 launched promptly at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio and then crashed back to earth like a failed rocket launch. It was restarted and got back on the air at 19h17. The joys of internet radio. This was the first episode going out on fibre. While podcast people have not been affected, listeners to the live show have had a really rough ride of late thanks to load shedding in South Africa. Since late 2022 it has either been my cell towers collapsing (Telcom) or if mine are up then the guys trying to listen have no power. It is, as they say, a shit show. When we did get going we started with Aerosmith and 'Young Lust' of the hugely successful Pump album. From there we had Ratt and then Sixx A.M., with 'Lies of the Beautiful People'. There were two tracks with a Metallica theme running through, W.A.S.P. with 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and then Volbeat with an excellent cover of ‘Don't Tread on Me' to keep the show Rambling On. Speaking of which I used Led Zepellin with ‘Ramble On' and Judas Priest with ‘Better By You Better Than Me' to talk a bit about the development of modern Metal. On the local scene, we checked out more of Infanteria's phenomenal album Patriarch and a track called ‘Repent Through the Orders You Seek'. It was a pleasure to play the brand new track by South African Metal heavyweights Deadline. The track is called 'Cult of Prometheus, it has just been released, Dave Devo Oosthuizen who works tirelessly to promote SA music, sent it to me and it is a pleasure to give it some airtime. We had classics from ACDC, and Motörhead, plenty from the ladies, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, and L7. This weeks Songs that may be about South Africa included 'The Ditch' (Dave Hause), 'Don't Lie To Me' (Dokken), High 'n' Dry (Def Leppard), 'Sucker Born' (Samantha Fish) and 'Take Back Your Life' from Disturbed. This week The Immortals, i.e. classic metal tracks that are over 7 min long and will last forever, came courtesy of Deep Purple with ‘Child in Time'. Following on was hard and I delegated the job to Tool and their amazing track about two additional chromones ‘Forty-Six and 2'. A highlight of the show was a track sent to me called ‘Goodbye To The World and The Whole Damn Thing' by a band called deadfilmstar. I really enjoyed it, it has such an evil feel to it. It is Mansonesque but very fresh, check it out. Wrapping up we had UK Punky stuff from The Police, the Jam, and then for good measure, we had Böhse Onkels and a track called 'Saufen ist wie Weinen' which means drinking is like crying. It is the best Böhse Onkels track I have ever heard, love that little bluesy intro. The new Bush album The Art of Survival gave us a track called ‘More Than Machines'. Metalheads can go to the last 10 minutes of the show for Obituary and In Flames, Nu Metal fans can go twenty minutes before the end and catch Birthday Boy Kid Rock and a track off Rock ‘n' Roll Jesus and Limp Bizkit with the amazing Wes Borland on guitar doing a track called Rollin', thanks as always for tuning in guys, much appreciated, Adios Amoeba's catch you next week. Artists featured: Aerosmith, Ratt, Sixx AM, Thin Lizzy, Y&T, The Quireboys, Def Leppard, W.A.S.P., Volbeat, Sword, Infanteria, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Drowning Pool, Disturbed, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, L7, Dave Hause, Slash (feat Chris Cornell), Motörhead, ACDC, Dokken, Manowar, Deadfilmstar, Deadline, Deep Purple, Tool, The Dead Daisies, The Police, The Jam, Böhse Onkels, Bush, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Obituary, In Flames, David Lee Roth The Story of Rock and Roll. S5E50 aired on 15 December 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. December is usually quiet on the station but for TSORR it is always very special, this particular show celebrated the official start of the December holidays. Next week TSORR turns 5 and the week after that Episode 52 the season closer takes you through all the rock and metal highlights of 2022. But more of that later. This episode kicked off with White Lion and a track off the Fight To Survive called ‘In the City'. From there we went to the USA and a band called Motor Sister, and Scotland for a bit of Nazareth and ‘May The Sunshine', a rock classic if ever there was one. Electric 6 and System of a Down took us to the weirder side of rock with ‘I Wish This Song Was Louder' and BOOM! Respectively. From there we checked out the ladies, Laura Cox out of France is new to me, what an awesome guitarist, we listened to Freaking Out Loud off her Burning Bright album. Big thanks to Norman for that one, I had totally missed Laura. We also checked out another track off the new Halestorm album, Back From The Dead. Buckcherry, no strangers to TSORR hit us with Fallout and Sixx A.M. with ‘Stars'. Metallica got us back into the heavy side of things and we stayed there with ‘Spreading the Disease' from Queensryche and some Accepts and some Candlemass. It all went down very well. South Africa is blessed with two of the greatest blues guitarists around, Dan Patlansky who has just been awarded the second-best album of 2022 by Blues Rock Magazine for his Shelter of Bones, (this is a huge achievement guys, Dan beat out blues giants Walter Trout, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Edgar Winter) and Richard Pryor in his band Pebbleman. We took a listen to 'Devil's Dopamine' and a track called ‘Edge of Nails' from Richard's Pebbleman project. Pink Floyd's ‘Young Lust' gave another classic track and then we hit the punky part of the show with The Boomtown Rats, The Clash, and a tribute to Jet Black, the drummer from The Stranglers, RIP Jet, thanks for the music. I am sure that Jet and Dave Greenfield are having a pint right this very moment. Taking us into the home stretch we hit the rock with Motörhead's classic ‘Stay Clean', The Dead Daisies, and some serious thrash from Death Angel and a track called ‘Mistress of Pain'. Then it was back to South Africa and three in a row from Cutting Jade, Arapaho, and Francois Van Coke. We closed out with Alter Bridge and a track that sums it all up tonight titled 'Holiday'. All the best to you all and to everyone who went on leave this week, enjoy it, Memento Mori! Artists featured: White Lion, Motor Sister, Nazareth, Rival Sons, Walking Papers, Electric Six, System of a Down, Texas Hippie Coalition, Joe Lynn Turner, Laura Cox, Halestorm, Buckcherry, Sixx A.M. Little Caesar, Little Steven, Metallica, Queensrÿche, Accept, Candlemass, Dan Patlansky, Pebbleman, Pink Floyd, Audioslave, The Boomtown rats, The Clash, The Stranglers, My Chemical Romance, The Dead Daisies, Kid Rock, Death Angel, Cutting Jade, Arapaho, Francois Van Coke, Mastodon, Disturbed, Ayron Jones, The Distillers, Alter Bridge The Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 49 of Season 5 aired on 8 December 2022 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio. It began with the very track that started me on this 40-plus-year journey down Rock and Roll Road i.e. ‘Detroit Rock City', the opening track from Kiss's Destroyer. That album changed my life, and may have changed yours too. If you get yourself a copy of The Story of Rock and Roll you may find some parallels. From Kiss, we went to The Clash and the title track of the London Calling album. Next, we got a deluge of guitar from Jake E. Lee and Ivan Ivankovic. Ivan on a track called 'World in Fear' and Jake with Badlands back in 1984. Randy Rhoads would have turned 66 this week so we wished him happy birthday in heaven and then checked out his more than able replacement Zakk Wylde in his band Black Label Society and a track called Lovin' Woman' off the Unblackened album. We checked out The Raven Age and a track called 'The Death March' and that fitted well with yet another track of the latest Queensrÿche album Digital Noise Alliance. We had some Lynyrd Skynyrd with ‘Call me The Breeze' and then another bit of classic rock in the form of 'Call On Me' from Bad Company. Now if you are listening internationally then I am sorry I bang on about the state of South Africa as much as I do, it is a tragedy we are living through, a government that has betrayed the electorate and stolen all the money by looting and collapsing all the State-owned enterprises. We are on the cusp of a complete blackout with load shedding around 8 hours a day. It was therefore politically correct to bitch about it and play The Damned's ‘Wait For The Blackout, followed by Sex Pistols and 'EMI'. If you substitute ANC for EMI you get the picture. From there it was time for some upliftment and that came in the form of Van Halen with 'Dreams', The Gaslight anthem with 'Stay Lucky', and Sixx A.M. with ‘High On The Music'. We will get through this and the music helps. The downhill run included some grungy stuff from Audioslave, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. It was post-Layne Staley Alice in Chains I might add, William Duvall is doing a great job in AIC. Next up, classics from ACDC and Black Sabbath, and then some Halestorm with a cover of Sophie B. Hawkins's 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover'. We took a listen to a lot of brilliant stuff that is new to me, St Aurora out of Finland, Girish and the Chronicles out of India, and Risingfall out of Japan. Thanks to the wifi situation with a lot of the cell towers in the country rendered useless because the batteries have been stolen, I lost a lot of listeners, apologies to all who were frustrated with the signal dropping. The end of the show turned into a beautiful Metal Festival featuring, Sword, Motörhead, Pantera, Bewitcher, and Arch Enemy. We ended off with Claymorean, a metal band out of Lazarevac, a small mining town in Serbia. Claymorean are one of the best bands I have discovered this year. Episode 33 of season 5 aired finally at 19h18 on Rebel Rock Radio. Same as last week I could not connect to the server but this time I found some gremlins in the system and was able to sort it out. We kicked off with Guns ‘n' Roses, with Accept and Herman Frank in hot pursuit. Both those tracks featured Herman because back in 1984 when Restless and Wild was released he was on guitar with Wolf Hoffman. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden signaled the end of the metal for the next 10 minutes. From there we went all over the place, leaving the grunge in Seattle we moved to Ireland for The Boomtown Rats, London for Joe Jackson, then down under for some ACDC and a track called 'Giving the Dog a Bone' off Back in Black. Mutt Lange produced both the ACDC and the Boomtown Rats' The Fine Art of Surfacing. We had new stuff from Hell Fire and a track called 'Tortuga Nights' off the new album called Reckoning. Also new was a track called 'Yen' off the new Slipknot, which is being released one track at a time in the same way as Arch Enemy and Megadeth were. Speaking of both of those we checked them out as well. It was cool to toast the late great Taylor Hawkins and check out a track called ‘Rudy' off his EP Kota. It's got so many hooks it reminds me of Rabbitt. We went mellow with Dire Straits and a track called 'Lions' off the Live at the BBC album and then we went heavy again with a track called ‘Exiled From Earth' off the finally released album called 'Deceivers'. Arch Enemy is my current favorite metal band, Michael Amott and Alissa White-Gluz are killing it. By the end of the show, we had gone from Del Amitri to Parkway Drive and Nickelback to Soulfly. The UK Punk slot was great, and The Stranglers with Duchess really hit the spot. The Rodneys were lining up, god forbid. It was also great to hear Stiff Little Fingers with 'Nobody's' Hero and Simon McBride who is now in Deep Purple in place of Steve Morse made his TSORR debut with a rack called 'High Stakes'. We finished up with Rage Against the Machines cover of Devo's track ‘Beautiful World, Zack De La Roche literally oozes resentment at the end, don't be like Zack kids. All in all, it was a pretty mixed-up affair, in a good way. Artists featured: Guns ‘n' Roses, Accept, Herman Frank, Newsted, Hell Fire, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, The Boomtown Rats, Joe Jackson, ACDC, Santana, Dave Hause, John Mellencamp, Rush, All them Witches, Megadeth, Slipknot, Taylor Hawkins, Dirty Honey, Simon McBride, Dire Straits, Arch Enemy, Bring Me The Horizon, Nickelback, Hinder, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, Mr Big, The Answer, We Are Harlot, Sixx A.M., Del Amitri, Parkway Drive, Soulfly, Rage Against The Machine
Season 5 Episode 30 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 28 July 2022. Once again showcasing the more sophisticated start to the show we kicked off with ZZ Top off a newly released album called RAW. This was the soundtrack to their Sam Dunn (Of a Headbangers Journey fame)produced 2019 Netflix rockumentary That ‘lil old band from Texas'. I haven't seen it but will do so soon. It's released as a tribute to Dusty Hill who sounds awesome on this track. Next up is a cool bit of Whitesnake off Love Hunter released back in 1979. We checked out some Black Sabbath with a track called 'Peace of Mind' and then Aerosmith with Steven Tyler singing about his favourite colour. ‘Tired Wings' by The Four Horseman was a breath of fresh air and I briefly told the tragic story of that band. The track came off the Rick Rubin produced album called Nobody Said it Was Easy, ain't that the truth? Queensrÿche with ‘Child of Fire' sounded absolutely better than ever and it was cool to hear something of Iron Maiden's debut album again. Paul Di Anno on vocals and a track called ‘Strange World'. The thing I love about doing these live shows is you can really create something out of nothing, as it wore on things sounded better and better. Infanteria, a metal band out of Cape Town hit us hard with 'Raging Bastards' off their new album Patriarch. The next track ‘Battering Ram' by Saxon may well be the best track they have ever done, sheer power, metal at its best. We caught some Pat Travers and his track ‘Snortin' Whisky', I have changed my message about this track, and new advice is offered now that I have had pause to reflect. Next up, the wonderful Neal Young and his uber cool track 'Revolution Blues', check out that lyric. We checked out 3Teeth, which is very Mansonesque so we checked out Marilyn Manson, the Double MM himself off The Born Villain album. Rory Gallagher made an appearance with ‘Bad Penny' and then it was time for ACDC, making a rare appearance on TSORR with 'Evil Walks' lol. As always, we got a bit punky with Blink 182 and The Stranglers and threw in The Polices ‘So Lonely' lest we forget how good the '77 to '79 period really was. Then we had a flurry of Ss in the form of Seether, Sixx A.M., and Slipknot. "Time are few boys" as one of my teachers used to say, so we ended up with a bit of Volbeat and checked out with Judas Priest and an iconic moment in Rock when My Chemical Romance played out with 'Famous Last Words' and announced that the Black Parade was dead, we are still all crying. Artists featured: ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath. Ivan Ivankovic, The Four Horsemen, Queensrÿche, Iron Maiden, Infanteria, Saxon, Nevada Beach, Pat Travers Band, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Megadeth, Running Wild, Ozzy Osbourne, 3Teeth, Marilyn Manson, Rory Gallagher, ACDC, Dave Hause, Theory of a Deadman, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Keel, Blink 182, The Police, The Stranglers, Seether, Sixx A.M. Slipknot, My Chemical Romance.
Episode 29 of Season 5 kicked off live on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 21 July 2022. I reckon this was one of the coolest starts ever and featured a little clip of Tom Petty telling the audience in Inglewood to clear the aisles. The original idea to have a mellow start was blown to Smithereens by Therapy with ‘Trigger Inside' followed by Scorpions and UFO with ‘Blackout' and Lights Out' respectively. Punches were being swung at the government and all was good. We took a listen to Trivium, Matt Heafy's band and they have really grown on me. This week is based on last week's aborted show but with some super-excellent enhancements. I am in a far better mood. We checked out Tindrum a band that I found on the Phil Wright Tapes, in a continuation of what I call tracks from Tracks From The Grave, we checked out a track called Street Fighter by Tindrum. From there we had Welcome to the Circus, brand new from Five Finger Death Punch. This time last week I was losing my rhythm, resetting streams, and generally pissing the listeners off so it was great to be able to do this show justice. Some of it has changed, mainly the sentiment (happy, grateful) but most of it stayed the same. Blue Öyster Cult hit the spot with a track called ‘Fight', which we must. We then entered the ‘Belly Of The Best' with Sixx A.M., this bit got a bit personal with the current state of things in SA. I experienced an armed robbery last week, 9 guys moved into our factory and took us prisoner, lie on the floor type shit you see in the movies. We managed to outwit them and set off the alarm but it could have ended very badly. The next two songs, Bastards by Machine Head and (Don't let Em) Grind Ya Down by Motörhead summed up the need to fight this shit. We cannot let the bad guys win. Things balanced out with Rival Sons and the stoic sentiments of Good Things and we let the power of great rock music do its work, Bad Company, and Foreigner were good medicine. We had the evolution of female vocals with Sheryl Crow, Lzzy Hale, and Alisa White-Gluz. We sorted out the UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols and The Stranglers, and US Punk with Fall Out Boy and The Distillers. Brody Dale is such an iconic rock chick, she should do more albums. We ended the show with a lot of SA music and started with Springbok Nude Girls, then Mark Haze, then Nibs Van Der Spuy. People wanted more so we had Valiant Swart and we went out with Johnathan Martin's amazing track 'I Wish You Well'. The highlight of the show for me was the shout-out to Danny De Wet and his awesome book Sex, Drums and Rock n Roll……In Africa. I spent time with Danny last weekend and he managed to get my book into the hands of Lucien Windrich who took TSORR on the plane with him back to the UK after a very successful Johnny Clegg tribute gig. We took a listen to Wonderboom with a cover of eVoids 'Shadows', two bands Danny was an integral part of. Artists featured: Therapy?, Scorpions, UFO, Trivium, Black Label Society, Warrant, Tindrum, Smith/Kotzen, Five Finger Death Punch, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M., Machine Head, Motörhead, Rival Sons, Saxon, Wonderboom, Arapaho, Bad Company, Foreigner, Slade, Mott The Hoople, Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, Sheryl Crow, Halestorm, Arch Enemy, Upon A Burning Body, Megadeth, Volbeat, Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Fall Out Boy, The Distillers, Springbok Nude Girls, Mark Haze, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Valiant Swart, Johnathan Martin

Ann Wilson, co-founder of the legendary rock group Heart, joins Glenn Peoples (Billboard) and Jay Gilbert (Label Logic) to talk about the set list from her show at the Neptune Theatre in Seattle, WA on Oct. 13, 2021. Ann played three songs from new album, Fierce Bliss, released on April 29, "Greed," "Black Wing" and a cover of Queen's "Love of My Life." And, of course, she performed a number of Heart favorites, such as "Crazy On You," "Barracuda," "Even It Up" and "Love Alive." "Some make the transition to live and some just don't work," Ann said of her choice of Heart songs from the '70s over other periods. "I think that the Heart songs that are in this set are ones that transfer to live the best." The Neptune Theatre show had a mix of rock standards and icons, including John Lennon's "Isolation," The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again," Aerosmith's "Dream On" and Led Zeppelin's "Going to California." After decades of live shows, Ann has a good sense of how to pick songs and choose their order. "You want to give people an experience," she says. "You want to have an experience yourself. And if the set is designed right, it's just like a natural momentum." The show had some surprises, too. Ann led off the show with Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Now," which she recorded in 2020. She also played Jeff Buckley's "Forget Her" and "Permission" by Sixx: A.M., the side project of Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx. In this episode Nate and Kyle once again visit, figuratively of course, one of the United States and try to figure out what, if any, good music comes from that state. This Week that state is Tennessee... I hear you saying, "That's a softball, surely there isn't an easier state what with Memphis and Nashville within the borders..." and I can hear myself saying right back at you, "it definitely wasn't that easy, and don't call me Shirley." There is some great music from this state and a lot of it isn't Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus, so listen as the hosts take you on a journey of musical discovery as they discover the lesser knowns, all of what's hiding under the popular and recognizable exports from the great state of Tennessee. This week's Playlist: Best of States: TNProtomen (Murfreesboro - MTSU)Light Up The NightIn The Air Tonight (Phil cover)Princes of the Universe (Queen cover)Self (Murfreesboro) MonogamyCould You Love Me NowRunawayWhat a Fool Believes (Doobie Brothers cover)The Katies (Clinton, Murfreesboro)DrownerNoggin' Poundin'The Features (Sparta) From Now OnTemporary Blues This DisorderThe Idea of Growing OThose Darlins (Nashville) Be Your BroNight JoggerRed Light LoveDe Novo Dahl (Hendersonville)All Over TownBig Star (Memphis)ThirteenSeptember GurlsAlex Chilton (Replacements song about Alex Chilton, lead singer of Big Star)“...I never travel far without a little Big Star.”Aubrie Sellers (Nashville) Wicked GameJust to be With YouHaven't Even Kissed Me YetRoseanne Cash (Memphis - Mostly)I don't know why you don't want meSeven Year Ache (w/the Golden Smog)I Was Watching YouGirl From the North Country (Johnny Cash/Bob Dylan cover)Pink Bedroom (John Hiatt cover)Tora Tora (Memphis)Walkin' ShoesRoyal Court of China (Nashville)It's All ChangedHalf the TruthWill Hoge (Franklin)Secondhand HeartGoodbye Ain't Always GoneEven If It Breaks Your Heart (smash hit for the Eli Young Band)Jesus Came to TennesseeGrowing Up Around HereLucero (Memphis)Last Night in TownBack in OhioWent Looking for Warren Zevon's Los AngelesSweet Little ThingBis-Quits (Nashville)Tommy's on His OwnTennessee Valley GirlThe Powers That BeGiant (Nashville) Innocent DaysStayThe Civil Wars (Loretto/Nashville)Barton HollowI Want You Back (cover)Saliva (Bartlett)-Rest in Pieces (their best song…written by James Michael & Nikki Sixx of Sixx A.M.)- Southern GirlsMusicatarationalvolume.com@MARVpodcast on Twittermusicatatrationvolume profile on Spotify for episode playlists based on topics discussedMusicatarationalvolume.com@MARVpodcast on Twittermusicatatrationvolume profile on Spotify for episode playlists based on topics discussed
Episode 19 was a ton of fun. It aired on 12 May 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio and we kicked off with Mel Gibson's son in law Kenny Wayne Shepherd and a track called 'Any Way the Wind Blows', that sentiment pretty much guided the show as we moved through Southern Rock with Jimmy Van Zant and Kid Rock all the way through to show closer Cradle of Filth with 'Death Magick For Adepts'. We took a listen to another two tracks off what I have been refering to as the Phil Wright tapes, this week it was Deep Purple with 'King of Dreams' and Vixen with 'Cryin'. We checked out some vintage Iron Maiden and Judas Priest off Killers and Stained Class respectively. The story behind 'Better By You Better Than Me' which caused Priest so much trouble after they were accussed of being implicated in the suicide of two US kids back in 1985 was briefly discussed. For newish stuff i.e. 2019 we had Phil X and the Drills and for brand new stuff we had Rammstein and Kreator. South African music was covered by The Devil's Party Band and a track called 'Headstone' and Jonathan Martin with "Wayward Road'. WE also checked an SA metal classic called 'Ozone by Odyssey and a track called 'Here I Am' from East Rand rockers The Burning, apologies to the lads I am pretty sure I refered totheir album as Highway to Hell instead of headed to Hell. No doubt they would love the raoyalties for the former. Other than that there was punk, alternative, metal, blues and even Rabbitt with a super refreshing instrumental called 'Take It Easy'. The track goes back to 1971 and its clear tat Trevor Rabin was as good as the best on the planet which is why he has been so woonderfully successful. Lets leave it here, the playlist is below, catch you next week. Artists featured: Kenny Wayne Shepherd, ACDC, Quiet Riot, Deep Purple, Vixen, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Buckcherry, Phil X and the Drill, Odyssey, The Burning, Thin Lizzy, David Bowie, Kiss, Megadeth, ZZ Top, Slash, the Devil's Party Band, Johnathan Martin, Rammstein, Kreator, My Chemical Romance, Shinedown, Lit Matthew Goode Band, The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, Hollywood Vampires, Marilyn Manson, Kid Rock, Jimmy Van Zant, Dream Widow, Exodus, Clutch, Rabbitt, Dave Hause, Sixx A.M., Cradle of Filth
In this edition of The Way Out I'm beyond thrilled to bring you an outstanding interview with person in recovery, loyal listener of The Way Out, and now our special guest to share his journey to and through recovery to this point, Ryan Kemmers. I just know all you all will find Ryan's story super relatable just like I did, from a chaotic childhood, to the impact of alcoholism and addiction in the family to self-medicating mental health symptoms and perhaps most universal the inevitable progression of use to abuse, and ultimately ever deepening addiction and alcoholism. Ryan shares how “Ryan's Way” as he refers to it didn't work in attempting to manage his drinking and what it took to finally surrender and ask a Higher Power he had no relationship with and didn't even understand for help. What happens next, and by next, I mean quite literally the next day, which I refuse to spoil in this here intro, is nothing short of an act of providence and launches Ryan into a 12-Step centered recovery that until that moment he never thought was possible. Ryan went all in on Recovery and now he shares with us all the tools, skills, and resources, including working the 12-Steps in order with a sponsor and this very podcast, that propelled him into a meaningful and rewarding recovery so listen up. Episode 9 of the 2022 season kicked off at 19h00 on 3 March on Rebel Rock Radio. We started with ACDC to get the blood pumping and then followed with a fairly laid-back Wolfmother track called 'Mind's Eye'. The whole show was pretty diverse, and included some heavy moments with Testament and Killswitch Engage then all the way back to the early 1969 ad 1976 for MC5 and UFO respectively. We took a listen to 'Motor City is Burning' which was actually a John Lee Hooker song before Wayne Kramer fixed it up. There was a nice little bit showcasing the talents of Alissa White-Gluz, starting with a track off Me and That Man's latest album New Man, New Songs, Same Shit Vol II. The track was called 'Goodbye' and featured Alissa with Devin Townshend. She sings it beautifully with clean vocals and it's an amazing contrast to the next track where she does her trademark death vocals in Arch Enemy. That track was called 'Deceiver, Deceiver' off the soon-to-be-released Deceiver album. Sounds like something out of Black Adder, Your Highness, Your Highness, Your Highness, Your Highness. It made sense to round out this bit of the show with my current favorite female-fronted band In This Moment with Maria Brink on vox. We had a short section where we went into C&W territory and played Buckcherry and Kid Rock both featuring Gretchen Wilson. The big disappointment was messing up the transition between Jethro Tull's 'Moths' and Metallica's 'Moth Into Flame', do not adjust your set there was a technical problem which, in the interests of keeping it real, I haven't edited out. Dan Patlansky's new album Shelter of Bones is excellent and we took a listen to 'Soul Parasite'. The new Scorpions 'Rock Believer' went down very well as did listening to two of my favorite solos ever, one from KK Downing on 'Before the Dawn' and the other from the amazing C.C. de Ville on Poisons' track 'Life Goes On'. Putting Pantera and Nickelback together was good fun, I thought it worked very well and we closed out with two heartfelt South African tracks, 'Sien Jou Weer' and Komma from Piet Botha & Jack Hammer and Francois Van Coke respectively. Artists featured: ACDC, Wolfmother, Sixx A.M. Rush, Slash feat Myles Kennedy, Testament, Killswitch Engage, MC5, UFO, Stone Sour, Def Leppard, Megadeth, Me and That Man, Arch Enemy, In This Moment, Black Label Society, Buckcherry, Kid Rock feat Gretchen Wilson, Jethro Tull, Metallica, Motörhead, Scorpions, Dan Patlansky, Samantha Fish, Diverted Disorder, Type O Negative, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, Sham 69, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Parkway Drive, Pantera, Nickelback, Rob Zombie, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, Francois Van Coke.
Episode 8 aired on 24 February 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio, earlier that day Vladimir Putins troops marched into Ukraine. The Doomsday clock is set at 100 seconds to midnight, 20 seconds worse than Iron Maidens apocalyptic 2 Minutes to Midnight. It was difficult to put it to the back of mind. We kicked off with Run Like Hell, off Pink Floyd's masterpiece the Wall. From there we hit Metallica's Devils Dance. It was impossible not to see the links to the world situation and song played, most of these songs were on the playlist days before this situation happened. The episode ended up a bit different, overall probably a heavier show than normal. No UK Punk!, that's a first, no Aussie, no Judas Priest. In its place we checked out heavier fare like BUllet for my Valentine, Gojira, In This Moment, Megadeth and Helloween. The highlight was two tracks for new SA bands, Code 106 with Eradicate and Diverted Disorder with DEstroyed by Fate. Both tracks are great and its clear SA rock / metal is in a good place. Both bands are on iTunes, check it out. I finally figured out a way to overcome technical difficulties and bring you more from the latest Iron Maiden album Senjutsu. The end of the show is pretty special, I played out with Kreator 'World War Now' not because I think there is one coming but because its a great anti-war song and deserves to be played. The live show fades to black at exactly 22h00 for the next show on Rebel Rock, the song however finishes on the podcast and there is a perfect little end to the whole situation tacked on to finish things off. May the force be with us. Artists featured: Pink Floyd, Metallica, Accept, Black Sabbath, Billy Talent, Seether, Bullet For My Valentine, In This Moment, The Burning, Hell Fire, Slash's Snakepit, Megadeth, Grand Funk Railroad, Kiss, Kane Roberts, Halestorm, King Kobra, Van Coke Kartel, Therapy?, Serj Tankian, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Code 106, Diverted Disorder, Scorpions, Saxon, Volbeat, Sixx A.M., Mastodon, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Gary Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Gojira, Guns ‘n' Roses, Kreator, Pink Floyd.
Episode 7 of Season 5 aired on 17 February 2022. We kicked off with a track called 'Bulletproof' of Paul Stanley's second solo album titled Live To Win. It was topical given the difficult times we are living in, it seems like everyone is going through some serious shit. We added a bit more inspiration to the airwaves with Billy Squiers' track 'Stronger' off Here and Now. It was a fairly quiet night by TSORR standards not a lot of people calling in so the show sort of had a life of its own. Cold Chisel's cover of 'Knocking on Heavens Door' showed once again just what a great live band they were. Ian Moss's guitar work as always just shines. Speaking of guitar work, there was plenty of it, Black Label Society, Exodus, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden all showcasing some of the greatest guitarists around. For a bit of UK Punk, we called on Sex Pistols with 'Did U No Wrong' and Stiff Little Fingers with 'Wait and See'. The latter perfectly demonstrates the wonderful ability of Jake Burns to shift quickly into 'really aggressive now' mode.Local music was ably handled by Roland Suttie, Johnathan Martin, and a seriously powerful track from Code 106 of a new EP called Alium. Code 106 are sounded really good on this, I was suitably impressed. From there we went on a Southern Rock jag for a few tracks, Kid Rock, Lynryd Skynyrd, and Whisky Myers all delivering the goods. 'Fill My World' the sad tale of Myles Kennedy's little dog Mozart alone in a storm and Sixx A.M. with 'Maybe It's Time' gave us a good 10 min of emotional stuff and it was tempting to mine that vein further, instead I opted for a mood-lifting end of show blitz of high octane 3 min tracks from The Offspring, The Distillers and Joan Jett (with her Blackhearts of course). We closed out with UK Metal stalwarts Desolation Angels and a sublime track from Piet Botha. Hope you enjoy it. Artists featured: Paul Stanley, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Billy Squier, Anthrax, Manowar, Black label Society, Rose Tattoo, Cold Chisel, Powderfinger, MC5, Megadeth, Children of Bodom, Exodus, Rage Against the Machine, Code 106, Johnathan Martin, Roland Suttie, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Whiskey Myers, The Black Crowes, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motörhead, Slash (feat Myles Kennedy), Sixx A.M., Kreator, Warrior Soul, The Offspring, The Distillers, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Desolation Angels, Piet Botha
Nikki Sixx is a rock and roll legend. As the bassist for Mötley Crüe, his very name conjures up images of hardcore partying. The band even named an album after heroin (Dr. Feelgood). But what does that lifestyle do long term? Especially for someone who says they were “made to be an addict.” Join us as Nikki tells us about his personal struggles with addiction, how he reached sobriety, and how he reconciles being sober with his public persona. Guest Bio Nikki Sixx is the international rock icon, founding member of Mötley Crüe and Sixx:A.M, three-time New York Times bestselling author with “The Heroin Diaries,” “This Is Gonna Hurt,” and Mötley Crüe's “The Dirt,” philanthropist, photographer, and addiction recovery advocate. In March 2019, Sixx premiered Mötley Crüe's Netflix hit biopic, “THE DIRT” which is based on the band's NY Times bestselling 2001 biography. The movie propelled Mötley Crüe's music catalog, streaming, licensing, and merchandise to new heights while fueling tremendous popularity of the band with a brand new generation of younger fans. Due to the massive fan demand for live shows, the band subsequently announced a summer 2020 U.S. STADIUM TOUR and sold out most shows within just a short amount of time. Due to the global pandemic, the tour is currently set to take place in Summer 2022. Sixx has been a long-time advocate for expanding support services for people in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD), and has given testimony on Capitol Hill, made frequent media appearances to discuss his experiences, and authored op-ed's on the subject in major publications, such as The L.A. Times, to help break the silence and fight the stigma that often accompanies SUD. It is Nikki's strong desire to help make a change for the better with what is our country's most prevalent public health crisis. Not sure what to say about this one, It went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 23 Dec 2021. I wasn't in a good space at all, I think that you'll hear that, in the words of Simon & Garfunkel "I am distracted and diffused". I get some mojo back about halfway. Another factor is that 2021 has been a fantastic year for good music and I have been very busy putting together next week's show which will be spectacular. I am looking forward to putting a knife into the heart of 2021 and I have an incredible soundtrack to do just that. This show was very much a jam session, it is noticeable for the lack of heavy hitters like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Metallica and for the inclusion of more obscure bands like Gluecifer, The Raven Age, Cirith Ungol, Stone Sour, Iced earth and the like. It also only features one SA band in the form of the very likable Future Radio and their track called 'State of Emergency'. I didn't love this episode but maybe it will grow on me. I was very quiet on the WhatsApp line and that always affects the show negatively, December is notoriously quiet and the ratings for RRR always fall through the floor. In the final analysis is was heavier than normal with Pantera, Deangersmith, Exodus, Anthrax, Children of Bodom & Kreator. It will probably end up being one of the most popular shows ever. The highlight for me was 'The Fires of Division' by Exodus off their new masterpiece Persona Non-Grata, Gary Holt has excelled on this. The lowlight was the auto DJ kicking in every time the wifi connection drops. You won't hear it on the podcast but it really breaks the rhythm of the live show. I am looking forward to next week's show, if 2021 gave us nothing else the music released was fantastic. Artists featured: Palaye Royale, Last in Line, Accept, Black Sabbath, Children of Bodom, Exodus, Killswitch Engage, Linkin Park, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, The Sweet, Sixx A.M., Cirith Ungol, Hinder, Stone Sour, Kid Rock, Buckcherry, Rush. Texas Hippie Coalition, Lindemann, Iced Earth. John Mellencamp, James Reyne, Pantera, The Raven Age, The Stranglers, The Distillers, The Temperance Movement, Black Label Society, ACDC, Mammoth WVH, Future Radio, Kiss, Gluecifer, Volbeat, Deangersmith, Kreator, Anthrax

James Michael is a producer, songwriter, musician and vocalist, most know for forming and being the lead singer in American rock band SIXX:A.M., alongside bandmates Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe) and DJ Ashba (Guns N' Roses). SIXX:A.M. has released five studio albums since 2007, and have recently released their greatist hits album 'HITS'. We had a wonderful conversation with James about being an observer of life, music production then and now, the HITS album, living out his rock star dreams, talking about addiction, the connection with their fans, and a lot more! Interview by: Robin Hignell Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/FaceCulture)
What's going on in the life of notorious Nikki Sixx? Well, quite a lot actually: His band SIXX:A.M. has released their first Best Of-album and only three days earlier, Nikki has published his new book "The First 21: How I became Nikki Sixx". In our exclusive ROCK ANTENNE interview, we talked to Nikki about his book, about his album, about Mötley Crüe and SIXX:A.M., about working with Bob Rock and writing songs and much more. Enjoy!
SIXX:AM have always been a band more the sum of their parts rather than a vehicle for their world renowned bassist Nikki Sixx.Comprised of Sixx, Dj Ashba and James Michael, SIXX:A.M are a rock band in their own right, relying on the power of their music rather than individual personalities to set their boundaries. They are responsible for some iconic music over the years, with the bands soundtrack to Sixx's The Heroin Diaries catapulting them into the limelight and responsible for hits such as Life Is Beautiful and Pray For Me.They have released an acoustic album as well as four other studio albums, with the bands latest release a hits package that goes hand in hand with Sixx's latest book The First 21.Vocalist James Michael sat down for an entertaining chat with HEAVY to discuss the album and almost anything else we threw his way."Hits is a collection of some of our more popular songs and fan favourites," he began, "and it's been a real exciting prospect to put this album and to be honest with you any artist that gets to the point in their career where they're able to do a greatest hits album, they're a lucky artist. I feel very lucky, we all feel very lucky to be at this point of our career where we can release an album like this. We're all very happy guys right now."While some may think putting together an album celebrating a band's lifespan is an easy proposition, Michael stresses the point that it is not as cut and dried as just selecting the tracks that did well commercially."Any time you call an album hits or greatest hits you've got to include your radio singles on there," he said, "so that was the easy part of the decision making process. We put the singles that SIXX:A.M fans know best, but then what we did with the rest of it was... it was really a collection of fan favourites. Whether it was songs that really went over well live when we were touring or songs that people have streamed a lot and obviously reacted well to so it's a good eclectic collection of songs. Some of them have never been on the radio at all, but we would consider them hits to our fans. That's how we came up with it and it was a fun process to do. It was a neat experience to go back over all of our albums and revisit each of those records and dust off the memories and be reminded of what the recording process was like and what the writing process was like. it was a really great experience and ultimately it just made all three of us feel very proud of what we've done over this last decade."In the full interview, James talks about the process of remixing some of the songs for the album and what that entails, the original songs on the album and how they represent SIXX:A.M in 2021, the piano vocal of Life Is Beautiful, Nikki's book that was released three days prior to the album, Nikki Sixx the person as opposed to Nikki Sixx the public figure, singing about someone else's life experiences on the book soundtracks, producing and mixing his own music and staying objective, SIXX:A.M's future plans and more.
You likely know Nikki Sixx from the legendary rock band Mötley Crüe. He's the bassist and the primary songwriter. He's also a member of the successful band Sixx:A.M.It's no secret that Nikki experienced years of addiction. But now he's sober, and he's talking about the adversity he faced as a child. In his new book, The First 21, he chronicles how he ultimately overcame his rough past. Some of the things he talks about in this episode are how he uses meditation, how therapy has helped him, and how journaling helps him understand himself better.

UU. Despidieron a Steven Adler y contrataron a Matt Sorum. Como dato curioso, Cleopatra Records sacó el disco Hollywood Rose: The Roots of Guns N' Roses,. Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for the support throughout 2020. There is no question that it's been tough :-). The X-mas eve edition of TSORR went on air at 7 pm on 24 Dec 2020. It wasn't particularly Christmasy as I generally am not overly Christmasy myself and especially when it comes to music. I wasn't a total grinch though and did play 'Christmas in Hell' by Sixx A.M. The show kicked off with some Whiskey Myers and then hit stuff like Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, and Animal Drive. My daughter was in the house and she is a big part of why TSORR exists as both a book and a Radio Show so I played a couple of tracks and explained how all of this came about. Kiss - Destroyer, John Paul Young's Yesterday's Hero, and The Boomtown Rats' masterpiece the Fine Art of Surfacing, all have a special bearing on the show as do Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and The Stranglers. There was a short tribute to Leslie West, a giant of a man both physically and as a guitarist. He sadly passed away last night (23 Dec) and so, it was fitting that we played 'Legend' off his Unusual Suspects album. Leslie's tone and feel were indeed extraordinary and he will be missed. That's Leslie in this episode's thumbnail for those who may not be familiar with the man (perish the thought).Highlights for me included Tom Petty with 'Have Love Will Travel', Machine Head with Bastards, Tom Waits with Mr. Siegal, and Rammstein with Deutschland. Artists featured: Whiskey Myers, Slash, Quiet Riot, The Lazys, Animal Drive!, ACDC, Ozzy Osbourne, Arapaho, POD, Rammstein, System of a Down, Australian Crawl, Kiss, John Paul Young, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, The Clash, Seether, Clutch, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Leslie West, the Killers, The Longshot, Cold Chisel, the Mayfield Four, Machine Head, Megadeth, Rival Sons, Airbourne, Prime Circle, Bad Company, Tom Waits, Iced Earth, Halestorm, Tesla & Slade.
Guns 'n Roses... Sixx:A.M... Bulletboys... and even Neil Diamond!? This weeks guest has played with them all... and somehow still finds time to work on solo material, have a successful merchandising line, and raise funds for charity. Superhero? Maybe. However, he prefers to just go by the name DJ Ashba! We discuss how he got the call to join Nikki Sixx and Sixx:A.M... and how he also got the call to join Guns 'n Roses! Did you know that Ashba also collaborated with Neil Diamond? Well, we discuss that as well. Plus, tips on how to be successful in this modern world. 29 October 2020 at 7 pm was the date and time that Episode 11 of season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll aired. It was quite a show, unusually chatty and with only one little balls-up which I left in there in the interests of reality. Don't adjust your set after Iced Earth's 'Burning Times' it just takes me 30 seconds to twig that the mic wasn't on :-) The joys of live radio. It was a very lively show with plenty of people chatting on the Discord server and on Whatsapp. We kicked off with 'Majestic' the traditional Journey opener but instead of more Journey, we cracked on with Metallica and Dio. I started the local stuff early with another track off Johnathan Martin's amazing album Into The Nebulous Night. Following up with Jack Hammer just made sense. Punk happened in the form of The Stranglers and The Clash and there was plenty of classic metal and rock such as Iron maiden with 'The Trooper' and Judas priest with 'Hell Bent For Leather'.The highlight for me was Bruce Springsteen with 'If I Was the Priest', as I said he's not called The Boss for nothing. We also learned how to pronounce Bonamassa and took a listen to a track off his new album called 'Royal Tea'. All in all, it was good fun and we had a lot of laughs. Oh P.S. if any of you eve read this I'd like to know because I am not sure if I am wasting my time :-)Artists featured: Ozzy Osbourne, Journey, Metallica, Dio, The Cult, Social Distortion, Wolfmother, White Zombie, Johnathan Martin, Jack Hammer, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Audioslave, L.A. Guns, Bullet For My Valentine, the Clash, The Stranglers, Armored Saint, Joe Bonamassa, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M. Pearl Jam, Zakk Wylde, Bruce Springsteen, The Burning, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Judas Priest. Jorn, Fokofpolisiekar, Kiss, Hanoi Rocks, the Black Crowes, Motörhead.
Season 3 Episode 5 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show took place at 7 pm on 17 Sept 2020. Finally, the microphone quality is right and we are very close with the volume levels now. The show kicked off with a track called ‘Hit The Ground Running' off an EP by an Aussie band I saw in a pub in Perth around March 2010. It was such a great little band and even though they are long ago broken up, it's a real little gem and deserves airtime. Next up we had Fastway, with ‘All Fired Up' and then we got into the better-known bands, Motörhead, White Zombie, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, stuff like that. New releases included the brand new Marilyn Manson with the title track of his album We Are Chaos and another track from Seether's latest album Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum called ‘Pride Before The Fall'. We had Punk with the Damned and Stiff Little Fingers, we had some Pixies and we nailed the metal with Children of Bodom and vintage Metallica and Megadeth. The grunge was ably handled by Alice in Chains and the Stone Temple pilots and Johnathan Martin and The Univited took care of South Africa. We were a bit light on the local stuff this week so expect a double dose next week. There was a little moment of self-indulgence where I said goodbye to little Libby a dearly loved family Italian Greyhound who left this earth on Monday. Asking Alexandria said the words in ‘Dedication' and Zakk Wylde played a moving solo in ‘The King'. All in all one of the best episodes in a long time I believe, see for yourself. Artists featured: Seether, Metallica, Tom Petty, Pixies, Fastrack, Five Finger Death Punch, Stiff Little Fingers, Zakk Wylde, The Uninvited, Marilyn Manson, Alice in Chains, Blackberry Smoke, Van Den Berg, Motörhead, U.D.O. Children of Bodom, Bruce Springsteen, Johnathan Martin, Sammy Hagar, Fastway, Megadeth, Krokus, Whitesnake, Foghat, Warrior Soul, The Rolling Stones, White Zombie, Sixx A.M., ACDC, Iron Maiden, Rose Tattoo, Slash's Snakepit, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Asking Alexandria, The Beatles & the Damned.

Season 2, Episode 13 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show took place at midnight on 3 July 2020. It kicked off with the stated intent of getting this place Hotter Than Hell. I think we succeeded but you will have to be the judge. Metallica set a blistering pace with a live version of Hit the Lights off Hard-Wired to Self-Destruct. It was pretty much all fast, driving, rock and roll through until we took a brief Punk break with The Jam and The Stranglers. I say Punk lightly because both bands are prisoners of the genre rather than true examples of the idiosyncrasies of Punk. That being said it set us up nicely for 11 minutes of Judas Priest featuring Richie Faulkner's guitar solo at Wacken in 2016. As shows go this one had a pretty good mix of everything, we went back to 1967 for some Jimi Hendrix and also checked out what Leslie West sounded like in Mountain back in 1971 with Nantucket Sleighride, an often neglected rock classic. There was a nice little bit of nostalgia with The Quireboys and The Dogs D'Amour and the idea of preparing for TSORR 30 years ago. ACDC and Jimmy Barnes took care of the Australian music and Blue Scream and Fokofpolisiekar did the honours for local content. Pop Evil made their TSORR debut with an awesome track called 100 in a 55 and then we were into the dying 15 min leading up to what I considered to be the highlight of the show i.e. playing you the track that I have been addicted to throughout lockdown, Killswitch Engage with Bite the Hand That Feeds. I didn't dedicate it to Jackson, my beloved Border Collie but I could well have J Artists featured: Blue Scream, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Axel Rudi Pell, Red Dragon Cartel, Fokofpolisiekar, The Stranglers, Mountain, the Jam, ACDC, Pop Evil, The Quireboys, Jimmy Barnes, Black Label Society, Q5, Rainbow, Black Veil Brides, Killswitch Engage, Jimi Hendrix, Mötley Crüe, Billy Squier, Sixx A.M., Judas Priest, Texas Hippie Coalition, The Dogs D'Amour, Metallica.
Episode 47 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at midnight on 6 December 2019. It was a cold, wet, rainy night and fairly early in the show, all the lights went out as the Mix 93.8 FM fell victim to load shedding. The music never stopped. For the next hour or so, Midrand was subjected to a generator driven little beacon of light in the form of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show, blasting rock and metal into the powerless night. It was sort of like a scene from Stephen King's masterpiece, ‘The Stand'. The music was great as always, despite once again walking in to find that the show hadn't been loaded, I managed to put something together at short notice. The show featured everything from Led Zeppelin to Skid Row, Stiff Little Fingers to Bowie, In Flames to Tom Petty. The highlight for me was hearing German (punk?) rockers Die Toten Hosen with Hier Kommt Alex, their ode to Anthony Burgess's psychotic malletjie, Alex. It's exactly the kind of thing you don't hear on the radio but should. As always there was humour, we had Audioslave with I Am the Highway which, on my CD, is called The Limit To You Love. This quirk of the CD printing has provided mirth before but I have never been able to find out how many of the 2002 release of Audioslave there are with completely the wrong tracks listed. Not only are the tracks wrong they are not even written in good English. We gave a bit of love to The Burning and L.A. Cobra. two S.A. bands that just keep grinding away putting out world-class rock and roll in a country that has largely never really appreciated or understood it. On TSORR we definitely get it and we are very grateful to these guys and many like them. Another highlight was taking a listen to Ozone by Odyssey, a track released in the early '90s and is considered a classic by me. Graeme in Brisbane immediately remembered it and gave it horns on the Whatsapp line. In other news, I may get into trouble for calling Led Zep a “band out of Birmingham” instead of London and for using the word ‘Legend' to describe people who are not dead. Que sera era, ain't life grand? :-) Artists featured on Episode 47 include: Nashville Pussy, ACDC, Thin Lizzy, The Screaming Jets, Sixx A.M., Odyssey, Kiss, Skid Row, Tom Petty, Ozzy Osbourne, Rory Gallagher, David Bowie, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Burning, In Flames, L.A. Cobra, Audioslave, Stiff Little Fingers, Rush, Cold Chisel, The Exploited, Die Toten Hosen, Rival Sons and Guns ‘n' Roses.
Episode 40 of The Story of Rock and Roll went out into the world at midnight on 18 October 2019. Two hours went by in a flash, that's the power of good music m/. It was foot to the floor for the first hour and then we started to get a bit more off the beaten track with stuff like Nibs Van Der Spuy, Walking Papers & 12th Avenue. According to the WhatsApp line TSORR Radio Show is “The best show on Rockfest”!! and “I am wide awake tonight show is one of the best in a long time”. So there you have it. The new stuff came from Mark Morton, the punk came from Green Day and from The Professionals. As usual, I had waaaay too much music and the show could easily have gone 4 hours. Somehow the ladies got bumped so I'll fix that next week. Every time I play stuff off Rush's final album, Clockwork Angels, I like it more, what a special band, we listened to The Wreckers. Every episode of TSORR is lead guitar-centric and this one was full of it. Jeff Georges smack you round the head solo on ‘I Tried' by We are Harlot was especially cool, as was the outro guitar work from Hammett and Hetfield on ‘The Day That Never Comes'. Mike Orlando's fretwork on Angel Sky would certainly qualify as notifiable. You probably know by now that as with infectious diseases, where some are classed as notifiable because they are high in ‘you better give a fuckness', so too, in my world, are guitar solos. Consequently, it is my duty to notify you every time you are about to hear one. There was a small little tribute to a giant of a man, Fanie Marais who sadly passed away this week, it's still an open wound for me. Fanie was one of the nicest guys in the SA Music scene and he'll be sorely missed. He produced and Engineered all The Uninvited albums and he was a very close friend, he loved life and to say cheers I played him our beloved Rolling Stones with Sad, Sad, Sad. Artists featured included: Megadeth, The Professionals, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Rainbow, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, Animal Bites, Metallica, We Are Harlot, Walking Papers, Sixx:A.M., Dokken, Airbourne, Joe Bonamassa, Accept, L:ast In Line, Audioslave, Windowpane, Pearl Jam, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, 12th Avenue, W.A.S.P. Adrenaline Mob, Mark Morton and Rush
Episode 39 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at midnight on 11 October 2019. It marks a change in the way the show is recorded in that the songs are submitted upfront. This means any changes to the playlist on the night are impossible unless by some miracle the song is in the stations' data base. It makes requests tricky. Requests don't form a huge part of TSORR Radio Show however listeners often submit excellent ideas that add a good energy to the show. The new method for requests is to find the track on YouTube which is a lottery, you never know what the quality will be like or how many surprises are in a track you haven't reviewed. The first taste of this method is about two-thirds of the way through, and it was certainly a strange one that cut and shifted and had phones ringing in it. I left it as-is for the purity of the show. It going to be better in future if I know what the track is like upfront. Everything else was 100% fun, pretty much what you'd expect from this show. The new stuff came from Hell Fire, Black Star Riders, Backyard Babies and Tom Keifer. I don't think we went back further than 1982 this week, I ran out of time and the Rory Gallagher from 1974 got bumped. In fact, The Damned of all bands represented the 70's. Local music was covered by Crash Car Burn and Johnathan Martin, the weeks outlier was Alabama 3 with Too Sick to Pray. It was the most appreciated track of the night according to the WhatsApp line. Artists featured this week included Dio, ACDC, Rainbow, Monster Truck, David Lee Roth, The Damned, Tom Petty, Rammstein, Sammy Hagar, David Bowie, Judas Priest, Black Star Riders, Joan Jett, Damn Yankees, Hell Fire, Amon Amarth, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Sixx:A.M., Alabama 3, Johnathan Martin, Megadeth, Crash Car Burn, Tom Keifer, Backyard Babies & Buckcherry with Papa Roach.
