Jan. 8, 2025 - New York Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon discusses the implementation of the state's paid, prenatal leave policy and provides an update on efforts to combat wage theft and upgrade their technological capacity at the department.
On this week's episode, we have a spirited debate over the words liberal and conservative. What does it mean to be liberal or conservative? Do those terms automatically connect to Democrat and Republican? This debate started during a recent TV segment between Charlotte City Councilman Tariq Bokhari and former mayor pro tem Braxton Winston, who also ran for Labor Commissioner this year. Sit back with your new presents, a cup of coffee, and see how you fit — or don't — into these widely used terms.
Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast. On today's episode, Sen. Shawn Still joins us to help us pay our respects to Bruce Thompson, Georgia's Labor Commissioner, who passed away on November 24th at the age of 59. Thompson built a legacy as a successful entrepreneur and small business owner, excelling in the insurance and financial services industries. His business acumen laid the foundation for his public service, as he sought to improve the lives of Georgia's workers and employers alike. Thompson was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2013, representing the 14th District, where he served for a decade before being elected Labor Commissioner in 2022. During his tenure, he championed efforts to modernize the Georgia Department of Labor, streamline unemployment services, and promote workforce training programs to address the evolving needs of the state's economy. Beyond his professional achievements, Thompson was a devoted family man and community leader, deeply involved in civic and charitable initiatives. A lot transpired over the Thanksgiving holiday. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr slipped in the announcement that he's running for Governor. Strategists Tharon Johnson and Brian Robinson, along with host Lisa Rayam, discuss the strategic timing of his announcement. Plus, will this news mobilize the Democratic Party and dredge-up familiar names like Stacey Abrams? Plus, the presidential pardon fallout involving Hunter Biden. The team also pays tribute to the late Bruce Thompson, Georgia's former Department of Labor Commissioner, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. The Cherokee County School District confirmed that the call was incorrect and stated that safety is a priority. During the lockdown, the school's interior and exterior doors were locked, and students remained in their classrooms. The district assured families that they take safety threats seriously and encourage reporting through their Vector Alert system, which accepts reports anonymously. The incident led to a delay in bus dismissal and a Code Yellow lockdown for the Liberty Elementary After School Program. ....……… Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com STORY 2: audit An internal audit by the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) revealed that over $105 million in penalties, fees, and assessments collected over the past decade were withheld from the state treasury. The funds, relating to administrative fees, interest fees, and employer penalties, were transferred to the treasury as required by law. These funds had been withheld during the tenure of former Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The audit, dated August 4, does not accuse the GDOL of fraudulent activity but points to a legal dispute over the agency's right to retain the money. The audit emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability. State and federal agencies are involved in an ongoing investigation into the matter. The current Labor Commissioner, Bruce Thompson, aims to restore transparency and cooperation within the agency. Story 3: dates Cherokee County cities have announced qualifying dates for the upcoming municipal elections on November 7. Canton, Woodstock, and Waleska are among the cities with seats set to expire. This recognition highlights successful collaborations between local PTAs and schools to enhance family engagement and support students. These schools are among only 302 nationwide and 29 in Georgia to receive this two-year title. The award emphasizes the crucial role of parent engagement in student success. The schools' efforts over the past year, driven by PTAs and school leadership, have earned them this prestigious recognition. Back with more after this Commercial: Dayco – Ingles 7 - Heller Story 7: Tort Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced his intention to advocate for tort reform in the upcoming session of the General Assembly. Speaking at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's annual Congressional Luncheon, Kemp highlighted the need to address laws that facilitate frivolous lawsuits against businesses in the state, leading to increased insurance costs and hindering job creation. While proponents, including insurance companies and business groups, have supported tort reform for years, opponents, such as trial lawyers and legislative Democrats, argue that proposed legislation favors insurers over victims of accidents and malpractice. Kemp plans to work with lawmakers to reduce insurance premiums and create a fairer legal environment in the 2024 legislative session. Story 8: Waters The Kansas City Royals dominated the Boston Red Sox with a 9-3 victory at Fenway Park. The Royals' offense was strong, collecting 15 hits, including home runs from Etowah Alum Drew Waters, MJ Melendez, and Michael Massey. Waters went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and several Royals players recorded multiple hits. Starting pitcher Brady Singer threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out the Red Sox batters. Adam Duvall hit a solo home run for the Red Sox, but their offense was relatively quiet. The Royals improved their season record to 37-78, with Waters' notable performance including a two-run homer. Water started slowly this season and battled some nagging injuries, but has heated up of late. Story 9: Ranked Two-time defending national champions, the Georgia Bulldogs, have secured the top spot in the 2023 preseason coaches poll, receiving 61 out of 66 first-place votes. The Bulldogs are set to kick off their season against Tennessee-Martin. Michigan ranks second, its highest preseason ranking in the coaches poll's history. Alabama takes the third spot, followed by Ohio State at fourth. LSU claims the fifth position, making the SEC responsible for three of the top five slots. The Big Ten has three teams in the top 10, with a total of four in the top 25. The Pac-12 also has representation in the poll with five teams. Critical of his predecessor in a dispute over tens of millions of Labor Dept dollars
Montana's Commissioner of Labor and Industry resigned Monday following her arrest for allegedly driving under the influence this weekend.
Today's bonus episode is my sit-down conversation with Georgia State Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson. Bruce has been a long-time, successful businessman and entrepreneur who decided to get into local politics years ago. As a state senator for Georgia during the Covid outbreak, he found many of his constituents were reaching out to address problems and concerns with the DOL. After working to look for a possible candidate, it seemed he was ignoring his own calling to run for that office. Having knowledge of both private industry and the public sector, made him a unique candidate for the position. It was a pleasure to spend time with Bruce as he recounts his past experiences, his current challenges and his future goals. He truly wants to transform the department to make it more efficient, more secure and more customer-focus driven. He is creating a culture of openness and cooperation, where value is placed on the individual and on the mission of the Department of Labor. Thompson shares a few stories from his first days in the role to where he is now at the midway point of his first 100 days in office. He plans to check back with us and the people of Georgia soon after for a status check. He knows he has multiple priorities, each equal to the other, which provides it's own challenges. Ideally, if he can successfully change the culture within the DOL, he believes they will become one of the most efficient and production Department's of Labor in the nation. Rep. Ben Moss spent over 20 years working on the railroad and knows about hard (and dangerous) work. So while running for county commission in Democratic controlled Richmond County was a tall order, he knew that his blue collar work ethic and persistence would eventually win him a seat in 2010 after two unsuccessful attempts. A decade later he would win a seat in the NC House. Skye and Brian talk to Rep. Moss about his life, his politics, and his pride in being a card carrying union member, a fact that often turns heads in Republican circles. He also talks about his plans to run statewide in 2024 for Labor Commissioner. Plus, it was a packed week in NC politics, including a NC Supreme Court ruling, Parents Bill of Rights, a pair of possible NC Constitutional amendments, the death of Sen. Jerry Tillman, the Speaker's riot bill, a pair of substantiated rumors, Medicaid expansion, Tweet-of-the-Week, Attorney General Josh Stein's reprieve, an unfortunate Twitter fight, and more. "Everybody seems to be simmering all the time: If you don't think like me look like me, worship like me, love like me, you're wrong; and I just wasn't raised that way." Happy New Year! We hope you all enjoyed a restful and fun winter break and are ready to start 2023 strong. Although the 2022 calendar year has ended, cold and flu season has not. COVID-19, the flu, RSV, and other respiratory viruses are circulating broadly in our community. While there is no single preventive measure that can guarantee you or your child(ren) or other family members will not get sick, there are many things you can do to stay healthier and to limit the spread of diseases. Get vaccinated against COVID-19 and the Flu Wash and sanitize your hands often Cover your coughs and sneezes Avoid close contact with people who are ill Stay home if you are sick Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated, and Consider wearing a face covering indoors If you have any questions about whether or not your child is too sick to attend school, please reference the Too Sick for School flyer on our website. If you are unsure if your child meets the guidelines for missing school due to illness, feel free to reach out to the district nurse assigned to your child's school or contact the COVID Resource Team at 503-844-1784. So far this school year, we have been extremely fortunate to have not been put in a position where we needed to close a classroom or a school because of excessive illness and absenteeism. With all of us working together in observing good health hygiene habits, we hope that will continue to be the case. If your child is healthy, it is very important that they attend school so they are able to fully access their instruction. Regular, on-time attendance is a key measure of academic success. Our Featured Event was the swearing in of a Hilhi graduate as the state's new Labor Commissioner. In the November 8th, 2022 general election, 2001 Hilhi graduate Christina Stephenson won the statewide vote to become Oregon's next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries. This nonpartisan position is tasked with protecting the rights of workers, encouraging and enforcing compliance with state laws, and promoting the development of a highly skilled, competitive workforce. She chose as the backdrop for her swearing-in ceremony on Friday, December 16th, an engineering classroom at her alma mater. The class is taught by former Intel Engineer Wayne Clift, in a true nod to what it means to prepare students for the real jobs they will be entering upon graduation. We are proud to see our alumni going on to do amazing things! Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. On this month's episode of The Voice of Oregon's Workers we sat down with Christina Stephenson, the Oregon Labor endorsed candidate for Oregon's Labor Commissioner! A working mom and longtime advocate for workers' rights, Christina Stephenson advanced to the general election in November following a successful campaign in the May 2022 primary election. She'll need the support of Oregon's Labor Movement and working people across the state to win her election, and that's exactly what we are planning to do this fall. The Labor Commissioner is in charge of the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries - or BOLI for short - the state entity responsible for protecting Oregon's workers' rights on the job. That includes everything from enforcing minimum wage and prevailing wage laws to protecting against discrimination and harrasment on the job. Cheri Helt is a candidate for Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industry (Labor Commissioner) and a former state representative from Bend. On May 17, she finished in second place in the primary, meaning she will move to the general election in November and face civil rights attorney Christina Stephenson. While this statewide position is nonpartisan, Cheri is a moderate Republican and business owner. Previously, she served on the Bend-La Pine School Board for nearly a decade. In this episode, we talk about her experience as a moderate Republican in the legislature (including a couple of difficult votes she took on the Student Success Act and vaccines). We also cover her vision for the role of Labor Commissioner (apprenticeships, workforce development, BOLI staffing, etc). We have an interesting exchange on the famous "Sweet Cakes by Melissa" decision on LGBTQ+ rights and religious freedom (which played out under Commissioners Brad Avakian and Val Hoyle, but may be resolved by the next Commissioner) where Helt describes how she would approach the decision. This Week in Oklahoma Politics, KOSU's Michael Cross talks with Republican Political Consultant Neva Hill and Civil Rights Attorney Ryan Kiesel about the Tourism Department canceling its contract with Swadley's Bar-B-Q to run restaurants in state parks, Governor Stitt signing a contract to remove nonbinary designations from birth certificates and Oklahoma Republican Party Chairman and Congressional candidate John Bennett calling for the execution of Anthony Fauci by firing squad. The trio also discusses the decision by the State Election Board to order State Representative Sean Roberts to remove "The Patriot" from his name on the ballot for Labor Commissioner and we remember former State Senator and Seminole Chief Enoch Kelly Haney who died on Saturday.

Erica has a rich history of serving her fellow Native Americans which has prepared her to serve all of North Dakota as Labor Commissioner.
New state data reveal that California workers face years-long waits to resolve cases of wage theft through California's Labor Commissioner's Office. Last year the average wait time for a worker to get a hearing on a claim that their employer didn't pay owed wages was more than three years in Oakland – the worst in the state. San Francisco's wait time was a little over two and a half years. According to advocates, the delays discourage workers from reporting wage thefts, in turn reinforcing systems of worker exploitation. The Labor Commissioner's Office cites staffing shortages as a key problem in hearing cases efficiently, compounded by the pandemic. We'll learn more about the causes and effects of California's wage theft claims backlog.

As you may have heard, our co-host, Ben Bowman, has announced that he's running for the Oregon State House in the newly-created District 25 (Tigard and parts of Beaverton). In addition to hosting this podcast and writing a weekly politics newsletter for Oregon360, Ben is the chair of the Tigard-Tualatin School Board. Previously, he worked for former Rep. Margaret Doherty and then-Rep. Val Hoyle (now Labor Commissioner). In this episode, Alex asks Ben about how campaigns work, what he hopes to do in the legislature, and how his run for office will impact The Bridge podcast. If you want to learn more about Ben's campaign (and offer your support!), check out his website: www.BenForOregon.com
Val Hoyle has been a leading figure in Oregon politics since she was appointed to the State House in 2010. She was quickly elected House Majority Leader by her colleagues, where she oversaw the political and campaign functions of the House Democrats. After a close second-place finish in the primary for Secretary of State in 2016, she was elected in 2018 as Oregon's 10th Commissioner of Labor and Industries, winning 17 of Oregon's 36 counties. She is frequently discussed as a potential candidate for Congress or Governor in the future. This was a fun conversation. In this episode, Hoyle talks about her theory on why political polarization has worsened in America. She also talks about how the Bureau of Labor and Industries is re-imagining apprenticeships so more people can benefit, and how she has worked to change the culture of the state agency she leads. As a bonus, she also tells the story of the first time she met Ben (who worked for her when she was Majority Leader).
For the last several years, the picture of Cherie Berry in every single North Carolina elevator has let us all know who NC's Labor Commissioner is, even though most people have no idea what a Labor Commissioner actually does. This provides a great lesson in top of mind awareness, and we discuss how on this week's episode.
