How should schools, educators and students adapt accordingly? Synopsis: Join Natasha Ann Zachariah every Thursday, as she unpacks the latest current affairs with guests. In June, three students at the Nanyang Technological University received zero marks for an assignment after they were found to have used generative artificial intelligence tools, or Gen AI, in their work. They were penalised for academic misconduct as the assignments contained non-existent academic references and statistics or broken web links, the university said. The case drew wider attention after one of the students posted about it on online forum Reddit, sparking debate about the impact of AI on academic integrity. All six universities here generally allow students to use Gen AI to varying degrees, depending on the module or coursework. Students are required to declare when and how they use such tools to maintain academic integrity. With Gen AI creeping into everyday life and gaining popularity among students, when is it wrong or right to turn to AI for help with your studies? Given its likely prevalence in schoolwork, how should schools, educators and students adapt for the future? In this episode of The Usual Place Podcast, my three guests - Singapore Management University’s Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education Michelle Lee, final-year university student Zildjian Garcia and The Straits Times education correspondent Elisha Tushara, who is a former teacher - weighed in on the debate around AI tools for schoolwork and the future of learning. Highlights (click/tap above): 1:37 Was the initial punishment the three students received warranted? 5:36 How rampant is the use of Gen AI tools among faculty members and students? 7:54 Do educators have a love-hate relationship with Gen AI tools? 17:05 Why Elisha and Michelle are worried about their children losing resilience in learning 19:55 Zildjian points out that AI tool users “always forget” that they might not be accurate 22:13 Are Gen AI tools just a new way students are gaming the system to get their certificates? 27:02 Should AI literacy be made a compulsory module for Institutes of Higher Learning? In today’s Q&A episode, Elizabeth from Melbourne shares a heartbreaking concern: her 7-year-old son is engaging in inappropriate behaviours towards girls at school. We unpack this tricky topic with sensitivity and seriousness—discussing how to draw firm boundaries, have safe and open conversations, and when to seek professional help. If you’ve ever felt unsure about how to respond when your child crosses a line, this episode will offer clarity, compassion, and practical tools. KEY POINTS: Normal Curiosity vs Concerning Behaviour: It’s typical for kids between ages 4–8 to explore gender and bodies—but behaviour like skirt-lifting and bottom-touching crosses a serious line. Immediate Action is Crucial: Clear, direct communication is needed. “Your body belongs to you. Other people’s bodies belong to them.” Teach Consent Early: Consent education starts with everyday interactions—asking before hugging, respecting personal space, and stopping when someone says no. Don’t Catastrophize, Stay Present: Parents must resist the urge to project into the future and instead address the present issue calmly and constructively. Get on the Same Page with the School: Schools have protocols—partner with them for consistent boundaries and supervision. Have Open Conversations Using the 3 E’s of Discipline: Explore what’s behind the behavior, Explain why it’s inappropriate, and Empower your child with better choices. Look Deeper, Ask the Hard Questions: Behaviour may stem from exposure to inappropriate content, modelling by others, or—more rarely—neurological or psychological factors. Avoid Labels: Kids need support, not stigma. Labels can harm their identity and influence how others treat them. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “Labels belong on jars, not on people.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Michelle Mitchell's books Consent Can’t Wait Campaign happyfamilies.com.au – for parenting resources and help ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Have a Calm, Direct Conversation Set a firm boundary: “This behaviour is not okay.” Avoid shame—focus on clear expectations. Initiate a Safe Dialogue Reassure your child: “There’s nothing you can say that will make us stop loving you.” Then ask direct but gentle questions about where the behaviour may be coming from. Involve the School Work with teachers and school counsellors to ensure supervision and consistent messaging. Monitor Online Access Review screen time and check for any exposure to explicit content. Consider Professional Help If behaviours repeat or your child discloses troubling influences, consult a psychologist or counsellor experienced in childhood behaviour. Tracie Ibrahim knows firsthand how OCD can quietly wreck a person's day. In college, reading meant going forward, then backward, then forward again — just to feel “right.” As a mom, grocery trips were derailed by terrifying, intrusive thoughts. At work, simple emails turned into obsessive loops of rewriting and rereading. In this video, she shares what untreated OCD did to her focus, her routines, and her sense of control — and how Exposure and Response Prevention therapy helped her reclaim her time.If you're struggling with OCD, our NOCD therapists might be able to help. In a collaboration between educators from the University of Leuven — who recently organized a conference on the future of schooling — and the ATTC school leadership program, this is a special series of Leading Education with Heart and Soul about the grammar of schooling. Each episode explores one or two key dimensions of what constitutes the fundamental “grammar” of schooling. This time, we ask: can we have, imagine, or create a school without… politics and schoolwork? Guests are José Miguel Vargas-Pellicer and Inés Dussel, and these are their thoughts:José Miguel uses politics not in the sense of governance, but in the sense of the Greek idea of schole, which means that school is a free pedagogical space for shared attention and study. The school seen as schole introduces newcomers to the world, so we as a society must collectively decide what is important for them to study. This requires an ongoing conversation about the common good, particularly in multicultural and multiethnic societies. From this perspective, school is a site of radical equality, a precondition for political life itself.Schoolwork, our second dimension, is not simply about academic tasks, but a specific mode of attention, perception, and disciplined engagement — a translation of oral into written expression, embedded in rituals and gestures. It is a communal activity that invites everyone to the table as equals.School is the only place where you're asked, through schoolwork, to validate what you've learned and to critically engage with it.Schoolwork extends beyond the classroom to communal spaces such as playgrounds and kitchens, each with its own pedagogical logic. Today, however, schoolwork is increasingly individualized, undermining its collective ethos. This podcast has been made possible through the support of the ATTC School Leadership Program, the educational consultancy School Matters, and the retreat facility The Valley of the Good Life.

Maria and Emily met during grad school at Georgia Tech and have continued their friendship and podcast collaboration despite working in Atlanta and Philadelphia respectively. Emily is a Lead Architect and Project Manager at WSP, Maria is an architectural designer with a background in marketing. Emily talks about the highs and lows of her recent experience taking and passing all of the architecture registration examinations and Maria shares insights into her study process and exam strategy. - Maria discusses her transition from architecture to marketing and the skills she developed along the way, emphasizing the value of exploring different career avenues within the field. - Emily reflects on the challenges of teaching first year architecture students and how she encourages them to build creative problem-solving skills within an architectural toolkit. - We end by reminiscing about the challenges of job hunting during the pandemic.
