Derrik was a 16 year old student when he was given a walk-behind trenching machine to guide through through a field. Derrik was earning school credit with the Battle Ground School District for his work off site with the construction company Rotschy. With no training or oversight, Derrik was severely injured by the machine, eventually losing both of his legs. He survived the work accident, and is now a senior in high school. His story highlights big questions about work based learning programs at Washington schools, and whose job it is to make sure that teens exploring the workforce are kept safe. Just in case you've never heard of ChatGPT, here's a short definition written by one of our CPYU Research Fellows, Brett Wirebaugh: “ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence assistant similar to Siri or Alexa, but considerably more powerful, intelligent, and interactive. Unlike those popular chatbots, ChatGPT doesn't use voice commands. A user simply types in a question and ChatGPT sifts through billions of online data sources to answer complex questions, solve math problems, write essays, and much more, all in a matter of seconds.” Launched just over a year ago, we've been concerned that ChatGPT could be used by students to even write complete papers and assignments, which in effect would be cheating. The Pew Research Center says that one in five teenagers who have heard of ChatGPT say they have used it to help them do their schoolwork. While some may have used it to explore a topic, we do believe that we have to teach our kids that they should not use ChatGPT to do their work for them.

Prioritize Foundation Elements: Keri emphasizes the importance of focusing on foundational elements for stable mood and overall well-being. Emily explains that they are about protecting your peace, not controlling others. - The goal is to have peace within yourself and to decide how you want to show up in any situation. - Understand what is within your control: thoughts, feelings, and actions. Implementing Boundaries in Homeschooling: - Emily shares her experience of starting homeschooling and feeling overwhelmed with trying to do everything. - She recommends transitioning from a doer to a teacher and eventually a mentor and consultant as children grow. - Determine the best time for learning based on your child's unique needs and creativity. Preparing Ahead of Time: - Emily suggests setting time aside in your daily preparation to remember what you love about your kids and how you want to show up for them. - Teaching From Rest by Sarah McKenzie is an excellent resource to ease overwhelm in homeschooling. Applying Boundaries to Chores: - Emily realized she was guilting and shaming her kids to do chores, leading to overreacting. - By adopting an employer-employee approach, she detached emotionally from the outcome and allowed natural consequences to play out. - Children become more responsible when they experience the natural consequences of their actions. Conclusion: - Remember to prioritize relationships over tasks in homeschooling. - Get Emily's free download, "Creating Healthy Boundaries" worksheet, to explore your desires and show up intentionally in your homeschool journey. - Check out the Happy Holy Mama podcast and explore life coaching options at fiatlifecoaching.com.
