La guerra fredda delle biciclette

L'ombelico di un mondo

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 21, 2026 55:45

Send us Fan MailA championship race can mess with your head before it ever tests your legs. We're back with Mason Cobi on the eve of the US Mountain Running Championships at Mount Sunapee, and we get real about the early season weirdness: stacked fields, unknown fitness, and the uncomfortable shift from “underdog” to “the guy people watch” on the start line. Mason breaks down how he thinks about pressure, why being keyed off can be a disadvantage, and how he's learning to race from a more established position without abandoning what made him dangerous in the first place. From there we go deep on mountain running tactics for a two loop course. We talk aggressive starters, when to let someone go, and how a simple pacing cap and a quick systems check can keep you from redlining early. Mason shares what he learned last year about respecting competitors, choosing the right moment to move, and why improved downhill running can completely change your options on race day. If you love short trail racing, this is the kind of practical strategy talk you can steal immediately. Then the conversation takes a turn to road speed and controlled chaos with the full Boston Marathon story. Mason shows up planning a victory lap after Gorge, decides to race anyway, and surprises himself with an OTQ and a huge PR. We also get into the experimentation side of endurance performance: super shoes, trail shoe choices for mud versus dry conditions, and the pros and cons of testing supplements like sodium bicarbonate and Nomeo, along with a clear warning about what not to try on your A race. If you're training for a mountain race, a marathon, or both, hit play and come race-nerd with us. Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves tactics, and leave a review. Life in the Peloton
The Giro So Far… | The Race Communiqué

Life in the Peloton

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP   We're nearing the end of the Giro d'Italia, and it's been a crazy race so far. Jonas Vingegaard's dominating the GC, the sprint stages have been hotly contested by Magnier, Groenewegen, and Milan, and UAE are mopping up stage wins left, right, and centre. With just a few days left of the first Grandy of 2026, it's time for this month's Race Communiqué!    That's right, guys, Tom Southam, Luke Durbridge, and I are sitting down for a good old yarn about what's been happening over in Italy for the last few weeks before it all reaches a crescendo this weekend.    Whilst it's pretty nailed on that Vingegaard will take home the pink jersey and, with it, a place in the Grand Tour triple crown hall of fame, there's still a hotly contested fight for the podium spots and - more importantly - the best placed Western Australian, with Hindley, O'Connor, and Storer all sitting pretty in the top 10!    I raced the Giro twice in my career, and I have some fond memories from the land of espresso, prosciutto, and pretty chaotic racing. This grand tour is always a fan favourite; less mainstream than the Tour, but not as low-key as the Vuelta. But, as always, Southam disagrees; is the Giro actually boring?! He makes his case, but also takes a look at the Unibet Rose Rocket's strategy in this month's talking tactics. They're all in on winning a sprint stage because, as our old DS Klier says; “You can't dance at two weddings at the same time.”   In this month's PeloChat, Durbo takes a look at the concussion protocol, and what needs to be changed to better serve riders. This is a real hot debate in the sport at the moment and - after seeing Adam Yates covered in blood and mud battling back into the bunch before a DNS the following stage with concussion - it's clear that it's coming to a head (...if you'll excuse the pun). We discuss the current protocol, and what could be done better to give riders the support they need.   As always, we finish up with a CommuniQuiz, and Southam's up to bat as quiz master with a real tricky Giro special edition. I reckon even Coppi, Pantani, and Nibali would have been caught out with some of these questions, so play along at home and see how you get on! Guys, it's smoking hot over in Europe right now whilst I'm cosying up by the fire at the end of Autumn back home in Melbourne. Seeing the riders sweating away in the mountains is making me feel pretty smug - I don't miss that one bit…but then again, a good excuse to knock the top off a few cold ones.   Cheers, Mitch   Thanks heaps for listening to this month's Communiqué, brought to you exclusively by TrainingPeaks. Make sure you hop on TrainingPeaks virtual next Tuesday June 2nd at 8pm AEST / 11am GMT+ 1 (BST) / 6am EDT to join Southam and I for a virtual ride. Southam's going pretty well at the moment from what I hear, so I'll have to dive deep into the hurt box to try to get one over on him - why not jump on and give me a virtual draft? In November 1927, a young Italian racer named Tullio Campagnolo stood freezing on a mountain pass in the Dolomites, unable to change gear because his hands were too cold to loosen his wheel nuts. That moment changed cycling forever. Campagnolo would go on to invent the quick-release skewer, pioneer the modern derailleur, and build the components that carried legends like Coppi, Merckx, Hinault, Pantani, and Pogačar to victory. For decades, Campagnolo was cycling. So how did the company that defined the sport end up with zero teams in the 2026 WorldTour? Kortom: snel gaan luisteren!

Send us a textWhat does it take to race on the edge, fix your flaws, and build a season that holds up under pressure? We dive deep with Mason Copi, fresh off a blistering run at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships and a domestic campaign that turned him from underrated to undeniable. Mason opens up about starting fast when the course rewards it, working the early road section, and the moment when cramps hit yet belief held. You'll hear how teammates on the course and a fired-up Team USA on the sidelines fueled each surge and why chasing the podium sometimes means accepting the crash. Then we get practical. Mason breaks down how he transformed downhill running from a fear response into an advantage using exposure reps on technical segments and a simple “monster truck” form cue. He shares the training blueprint that keeps him healthy while racing often: threshold work for speed and lactate clearance, high aerobic volume buffered by the bike, and minimalist strength focused on hips, glutes, calves, and soleus. No fluff, no gimmicks—just the boring, repeatable work that lets you push hard again next week. We also explore how rising U.S. depth—think Taylor, Cam, Christian—lifts everyone, turning rivalry into fuel.Looking ahead, Mason maps an ambitious 2026: sharpening for the USATF Half in Atlanta, testing range at the Boston Marathon, mixing mountain classics like Big Alta and Gorge, and stepping into the unknown at Speedgoat 50K to build muscular endurance and dial nutrition. He'll chase a WMRA team spot at Sunapee and aim for an Olympic Trials qualifier at CIM, answering the bigger question of how fast a sub-ultra mountain runner needs to be now. We close with a candid look at free agency—why sponsorship timing is tricky, what autonomy enables, and how to keep betting on yourself when the budget says camp and the goals say compete. If this conversation moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves mountain running, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find these stories. Send us a textWhat happens when you suddenly find yourself among the world's elite athletes? Mason Coppi, who has exploded onto the sub-ultra mountain running scene with remarkable success, joins us for a candid conversation about his journey to the top and upcoming World Championships appearance.Despite dominating races and earning his place among the sport's best, Mason reveals his ongoing battle with imposter syndrome. "I would feel uncomfortable putting my name in that conversation," he admits, even as his results speak volumes. Yet he's found a powerful antidote in staying present during competition – deliberately pausing during races to absorb the scenery and experience the joy of the moment.Having represented Team USA once before at Chiang Mai, Mason approaches this year's World Championships in Spain with fresh perspective. His first European trip represents not just a personal milestone but an opportunity to be part of something bigger. The camaraderie within Team USA has transformed his approach, creating what he describes as a true team environment he hasn't experienced since college. Through pre-championship training camps and races, these elite individuals have formed a cohesive unit ready to challenge the world's best.As preparation for the technically demanding world championship course continues, Mason shares his philosophy of maintaining successful training approaches rather than making dramatic changes. His balanced perspective extends to his championship expectations – acknowledging the exceptional difficulty while maintaining confidence in his abilities. Most compelling is his vision for what a team medal might mean: "This is an opportunity to really show what we're capable of" and potentially rewrite the narrative around American mountain running on the global stage.Listen now to this inspiring conversation about athletic excellence, team dynamics, and finding joy in the journey to the top. Sexual addiction silently destroys lives, marriages, and families while those struggling often feel hopelessly trapped in cycles of shame. In this powerful conversation, Steve Coppi and Corey Neal share their journey from decades of sexual shame to newfound freedom through honesty, accountability and a personal relationship with Jesus.Steve reveals how his 45-year battle with pornography addiction began at age 12 and continued until he was 57. Rock bottom came when suicidal thoughts and unbearable hypocrisy drove him to make a desperate call to Corey. That single phone call began a transformation process when Corey responded not with judgment but with compassionate understanding: "That's not the worst I've heard before. You're going to be all right."The conversation dives deep into how true accountability operates—not as behavior policing but as a confessional space where men can finally bring their darkest struggles into the light. Drawing from James 5:16, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective".  They emphasize that confession to trusted brothers provides the pathway to healing that so many desperately seek. What sets this episode apart is the practical roadmap they offer for those currently struggling. They share how recovery begins with breaking denial, surrendering to a process, and participating in specialized groups where men find the tools, community, and biblical guidance necessary for lasting freedom. They emphasize that while the journey isn't easy, it leads to a life they never thought possible—marriages in restoration and reconnection with children. For leaders and those wanting to help others, Steve and Corey announce their upcoming Men of Valor Conference on October 10-11, 2025 in Santa Rosa Beach FL, designed to equip people with the tools and understanding to effectively support those battling sexual addiction.Ready to break free from sexual bondage or help someone who is? This episode provides both the hope and practical guidance needed to begin that journey today. The path to freedom starts with one honest conversation—just like the one that changed Steve's life forever. For anyone struggling in this area contact Cory Neal at 850-368-3250 and Steve Coppi at 678-457-6471. For more information contact us atrtrdestiny@gmail.com

Fresh off his silver medal performance at the 2025 USATF Mountain Running Championships, Mason Copey joins James Lauriello to break down the race that earned him a coveted spot on Team USA for the upcoming World Championships. What makes this conversation particularly fascinating is the clear evolution of an athlete coming into his own. Mason candidly shares how just two years ago on the same course, he "could not stay on my feet" during descents, losing multiple positions every time the trail pointed downhill. Through dedicated technical training and strategic racing, he's transformed this weakness into a strength that now puts fear into his competitors. The championship race itself unfolded on a course rendered nearly unrecognizable by torrential rain. "You would take steps and your foot would disappear underneath mud," Mason explains, painting a vivid picture of the chaotic conditions that created a truly unpredictable battle. His minute-by-minute breakdown of the final moments—complete with tactical decisions, cramping calves, and the roar of spectators—puts you right in the middle of the action.Beyond the race itself, this conversation delves into training methodology that worked, including the surprising impact of cycling and marathon preparation on mountain running performance. Mason also looks ahead to Team USA's prospects at Worlds, offering genuine excitement about the squad's potential to compete for medals against the best mountain runners on the planet.Whether you're a competitive trail runner looking for training insights or simply enjoy compelling stories of athletic achievement against challenging conditions, this episode delivers a masterclass in what it takes to perform at the highest level of mountain running. Less running, more biking, and highly targeted quality sessions."Biking is the next frontier," Mason explains, detailing how he achieves the aerobic stimulus of 100-mile running weeks while keeping his body fresh for key workouts. Rather than grinding away on technical trails daily, he concentrates his mountain-specific training into focused sessions, building his foundation through track workouts that maximize running economy and speed. This approach has yielded remarkable results—from a significant marathon PR at CIM to blazing fast mountain performances that demonstrate both climbing power and downhill prowess. What makes Mason's perspective particularly valuable is his dual role as both elite athlete and coach. He meticulously analyzes training stimulus, distinguishing between metabolic and mechanical adaptations while crafting sessions that deliver maximum benefit with minimal breakdown. His explanation of how neuromuscular skills (like technical trail running) require frequency rather than volume offers a refreshing counterpoint to the "more is better" mentality.Beyond the physical aspects, Mason offers thoughtful insights on mental preparation, emphasizing self-acceptance and vulnerability as foundations for athletic success. As he prepares for the Sunupi Mountain Classic—a World Championship qualifier with a technical course that will test every aspect of mountain running ability—his confidence is evident but tempered with respect for the competitive field.Whether you're targeting a mountain race, seeking performance breakthroughs, or simply looking to train more sustainably, Mason's innovative methodology offers valuable lessons for endurance athletes at every level. Tune in for a masterclass in cutting-edge mountain running preparation.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

In this podcast episode, I dive deep into a conversation with Mason, a passionate runner with a profound journey from disliking hiking as a child to becoming a notable runner, including competing in college and eventually embracing trail running after college.  Growing up in Southern California with access to beautiful trails, Mason initially detested hiking but discovered a love for running after outpacing his brother and engaging in sports like football and street hockey. Despite struggling in team sports due to his size, Mason found his stride in running, fueled by sibling rivalry and a desire to qualify for a school 'Olympics.'  His journey took him to Furman University in South Carolina, where he continued running competitively but started feeling burnt out towards the end. The introduction to trail running rekindled his passion for the sport, leading to a shift towards running on trails post-graduation.  Mason also discusses the dynamics of transitioning from Division 1 running to trail running, his interest in sub-ultra running for its speed and intensity, and his experiences and perspectives on running road marathons, including hitting 'the wall.'  Moreover, the conversation touches on challenges like body image issues among male runners and the significance of embracing failures as learning opportunities. Mason shares upcoming runs and encourages engagement in sub-ultra and mountain races. 01:48 Welcome to the Podcast: Introducing Mason 02:20 From Hiking Hater to Running Enthusiast: Mason's Journey 08:14 The Transition from College Running to Trail Running 11:31 The Allure of Sub-Ultra Running: Mason's Passion 16:16 Addressing the Challenges of Media Coverage in Running 20:30 Redefining Athleticism: Embracing Shorter Distances 32:35 Addressing Body Image and Eating Disorders in Running 37:29 Mason's First Road Marathon Experience 46:09 Embracing Failure and Learning in Athletics 52:27 Sharing Personal Failure Stories: From Mountain Champs to Thailand 01:03:42 Looking Ahead: Upcoming Races and Goals 01:07:34 Connecting and Sharing: Where to Find More Links: http://www.hellotorunning.com/ https://www.instagram.com/mcoppi44 _____ Get 15% off your first order of Precision Fuel & Hydration: https://visit.pfandh.com/3TgaDkf CONNECT WITH ME: Apply for run coaching Subscribe to my newsletter Instagram TikTok Website Email --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaching-klutz/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaching-klutz/support
