Jess is a Doctoral Student at Boston College working in Comparative Theology and Comparative Religion, particularly between the Hindu and Christian traditions. His current research focuses on theological resonances between Vaishnava Bhakti practices and those found within the realm of Christianity. Further specialty includes 20th Century Hinduism, North American Hinduism, and work with Hindi and Sanskrit as research languages. Jess is also engaged in interreligious dialogue and interfaith events, academically and within local communities. Jess works with the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium as an event coordinator and facilitator for the Interreligious Leadership Certification program and has been a community interfaith organizer for many years. Jess also has nearly a decade of experience as an educator in public and private schools in California. I had not yet put my head and heart and body into sync. Until you learn this lesson you will likely feel that you don't make a good pilgrim - whatever that means for you. It is both the curse and the blessing of the Camino; but the only way that you will learn.I can't say today whether I make a good pilgrim or not. I can say I have walked a path I will never walk again and yet here I am retracing my boot steps across Spain. Newspaper columnist and political analyst Ruben Navarette joins Tavis to deconstruct all of the latest trending political headlines.

9/11 is a date that will live in infamy. But for much of the world, September 11 conjures up images of another deadly assault against freedom and liberty. Exactly 50 years ago today, the democratically-elected socialist president of Chile, Salvador Allende, was overthrown in a far-right military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet.Today, “Watchdog” host Lowkey talks to two guests who know the story of “the First 9/11” better than almost anyone. Roberto Navarette was a 17-year-old medical student at the time of the coup, and was imprisoned – like tens of thousands of his countrymen – in open air stadiums. He survived being tortured and shot by the regime, and eventually escaped, settling in the United Kingdom.Ironically, the U.K. government had actually been working very hard to ensure Allende's downfall, and later to keep Pinochet in power, as John McEvoy's work has revealed. Based on documents obtained under Freedom of Information laws, McEvoy has shown how the U.K.'s MI6 had been training Latin American police and militaries in torture tactics and other ways in which to suppress domestic dissent. Britain had long had strong economic interests in the region, considering it an unofficial part of its empire. McEvoy is an academic, historian and journalist specializing in uncovering Britain's relationship with Latin America. He is currently producing a documentary film – “Britain and the Other 9/11” about the U.K. government's covert campaign against Allende and its subsequent support for Pinochet.Today, Lowkey speaks to Navarette and McEvoy about the coup and its legacy on the world.Allende was a particular threat to the establishment in Washington and London. Not simply because he was a Marxist head of state, but because he was democratically elected and believed in coming to power through entirely legal means. This, for Navarette, terrified many in the West, as it undermined completely their claims about socialism being an anti-democratic ideology. The 1973 coup reverberated around the world. Not only did it become the blueprint for further U.S.-backed operations in Latin America, but Chile became a laboratory for neoliberal economics. The country was flooded with economists from the University of Chicago, who promised to transform it into a modern utopia.Instead, the nation was ruined, with economic crashes and total devastation for ordinary Chilean citizens. This week we kick off a brand-new mini-series looking at sake (or shochu)-specific terminology in a new way.Up until now we've occasionally hosted in-depth discussions on hyper-specific topics unique to sake or shochu making, service, or experiences (see: Koji Basics, Kanzake, etc.), where we would round up our hosts or a team of specialists in attempt to unravel exciting and essential topics related to our favorite drink categories.Based on what our listeners have told us (and what the numbers say), more-often-than-not these have been our most popular and most requested show format. It turns out people want to dig into this stuff!This got us thinking: maybe there's a way for us to explore these important terminology in a manner that's both more concise, while also maintaining and valuing the range of perspectives that coexist around these topics.Our (tentative) response to that question is this brand new (mini?) series, “On Your Own Terms”, where one of our hosts invites a special guest who is proactively working or engaged in the world of sake or shochu, asking them to introduce to us a specific piece of vocabulary that they feel is particularly significant or close to their heart – on their own terms.Understanding “what” a particular term means is important, but understanding and appreciating an individual's understanding and appreciation for a theme or topic is, we think, equally important. Here at Sake On Air, while we do our best to provide answers, more than anything, we want to offer new perspectives. That way sake lovers (and our lovely listeners) can hopefully enjoy sake not only the way they were “taught”, but more freely and enjoyably on their own terms.For this first iteration we welcome back to the show Jorge Navarette, brewer, sales manager, and all-in-one sake powerhouse at Matsui Shuzo – makers of Kagura – located in the heart of Kyoto. (Jorge previously joined us back on Episode 49: Kurabito Life). Jorge's terminology of choice this week: nama. Being a brewery that doubled down on nama as a core component of their main product line, he and the team at Matsui Shuzo are in a great position to not only define, but offer perspective on what it means to both brew, sell, and enjoy namazake as more and more sake drinkers' curiosity is piqued by the world of entirely unpasteurized sake. For this new series, we're going to be coming at you rapid-fire over the next several weeks, examining what this sort of show format could look like in a world of Sake On Air that happens with greater frequency, as well as to gauge what our listeners think. Along the way I met up with Claire from Ireland. Together we walked on in the early morning delighted to leave the fields for a small village with an open café.I ordered an Aquarius Naranja, a bocadillo with jamon and queso - basically a big fresh crusty roll with a big slice of ham and another of cheese, plus a wedge of Spanish tortilla  which is like a deep-dish, sliced potato quiche, and a chocolate croissant ... for later.Wha? I was walking 15 or more miles a day. I needed fuel. And company. Pilgrims I'd not seen for a time where there as well enjoying the sunshine. I sat with Roger from Ireland, Angela from Hong Kong and my 3 German friends all sharing breakfast and stories.When I left I still had the croissant but after a few more miles walking uphill I found myself in a vineyard which seemed like a fine place to enjoy the view and the croissant.The Camino has food for the soul and belly; some tastes better with company and some is pretty good estoy solo.Story Prompt: When have you enjoyed a meal that has lingered in your memory? I had not yet put my head and heart and body into sync. Until you learn this lesson you will likely feel that you don't make a good pilgrim - whatever that means for you. It is both the curse and the blessing of the Camino; but the only way that you will learn.I can't say today whether I make a good pilgrim or not. I can say I have walked a path I will never walk again and yet here I am retracing my boot steps across Spain.
