While Pitocin can be lifesaving, it can also intensify contractions, reduce oxygen to a baby, and in rare cases lead to devastating outcomes. We're unpacking what happens when an “elective induction” turns into a cascade of interventions — and why informed consent in birth matters.Thank you to our sponsors!TAYLOR DUKES WELLNESS: Use code ALEXCLARK for 10% off your purchase.BRANCH BASICS: Use code ALEX15 for 15% off Starter Kits.COWBOY COLOSTRUM: Use code ALEX for 25% OFF.GEVITI: Use code ALEX to get 20% off your first purchase.JOOVV: Get an exclusive discount on your first red light therapy order. Our Guest:Katie SpinksKatie's Links:INSTAGRAMFACEBOOKTIKTOK

In Part Six of the Mike Tyson career profile, we enter one of the most dramatic chapters in the life of the youngest heavyweight champion in history. This segment covers the peak of Tyson's dominance inside the ring—alongside the chaos that began to consume his world outside of it. The episode opens with Tyson's explosive showdown against Michael Spinks, a fight built up as the ultimate test for the undefeated champion. In just 91 unforgettable seconds, Tyson demolished Spinks, cementing his position as the most feared boxer on the planet. We also revisit his bout with Tony Tubbs in Tokyo—a fight that at the time seemed routine, but in hindsight foreshadowed a darker future. Away from the spotlight of arenas and title belts, Tyson's life was spiraling. His tumultuous marriage to Robin Givens, marked by public conflict and media scrutiny, became a national spectacle. The death of mentor and manager Jim Jacobs—one of the last stabilizing forces in Mike's life—left a void that would never be filled. With Don King beginning to exert influence, friendships fractured and discipline faded. This part concludes with the night that shook the boxing world: February 11, 1990. Tyson vs. Buster Douglas in Tokyo—where the unstoppable champion was finally brought crashing to earth. Through a mix of behind-the-scenes turmoil, loss of focus, and an inspired challenger, Iron Mike suffered one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Learn more about your ad choices. Darkness Radio presents Beyond Mothman: Chasing Cryptids in Point Pleasant & More with Paranormal Investigator/Author, Dave Spinks! In the early 2000s, Dave Spinks set out on a quest to uncover the truth behind one of America's most infamous legends—the Mothman of Point Pleasant. What began as a deep dive into the chilling sightings of the 1960s quickly turned into something far more unsettling. With each visit to the area, he peeled back layers of mystery, revealing an eerie web of supernatural occurrences that stretched far beyond the Mothman itself. For two decades the deeper this native West Virginian dug, the stranger the stories became—whispers of banshees wailing in the night, shadowy cryptids lurking in the forests, UFOs lighting up the sky, and even the presence of witches practicing ancient rites. But this wasn't just folklore. Spinks himself experienced bizarre phenomena, documenting an overwhelming amount of paranormal evidence that suggested Point Pleasant was a true hotbed of the unknown. Dave joins Darkness Radio today to talk about this new book, about his adventures with David Weatherly and Serenity Jenny chasing down Mothman stories, Men In Black, Banshee hauntings, Occult activity, and much much more! Amelia went to a very sunny opening ceremony for a new landmark in Edinburgh to celebrate 200 years of braille. Here she is speaking to Head of Inclusive Design, Robin Spinks, and RNIB Scotland Community manager, Jane Coates, to hear their thoughts on Braille and the clock. Image shows the floral clock design- an elaborate clock face made up of thousands of flowers and plants. The clock reads Royal National Institute of Blind People around the circumference and has 12 segments each in alternating pinks and greens. To the right of the clock, is an RNIB badge of flowers and this is all surrounded by pink flowers. Along the top of the design is a long flowerbed reading, Celebrating 200 years of braille in green lettering.

Drawing from her journey from ambitious journalist to burnout victim to advocate for a different way of living, Rosie offers a surprisingly hopeful perspective on navigating a world where traditional markers of success have lost their shine. After achieving what looked like career success—writing for prestigious publications like The Guardian and The New York Times—Rosie found herself profoundly unhappy. The pandemic provided an unexpected reset, challenging her assumptions about what's guaranteed in life and what truly matters. She describes straddling two worlds: "here" (where we've accepted the limitations of growth and progress) and "there" (the conventional world of consumption and productivity we still partially inhabit). The conversation takes a particularly powerful turn when Rosie discusses how becoming a mother revealed the transformative power of care. "I had never in my old life, in my twenties, in my ambitious journalist life, thought about anyone but myself. The work of caregiving is repetitive and you're never done, but in that is this extraordinary quality that you unlock within yourself." This insight extends beyond parenting—it's about redirecting our energy toward connection with others and our local communities.Rather than dwelling in despair, Rosie offers practical suggestions for building what she calls "the village"—trading childcare with other parents, learning neighbors' names, replacing consumption-based leisure with generative activities. These small shifts can rebuild our sense of belonging while preparing us for a future that may demand more resilience and mutual support.Support the show

Dave Spinks, perhaps best known for his appearances on the Travel Channel, the History Channel, and Destination America, says you can't beat the Mountain State when it comes to UFO lore. “Two of the earliest and most famous encounters in the U.S. were reported here,” Spinks says, referring to legendary encounters involving Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster. “But it was here, too, at Green Bank Observatory that Frank Drake established the first telescopes used in the SETI program—the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/05/18/west-virginia-ufo-seti-green-bank-flatwoods-mothman/ #2 – From WVDNR – When it comes to wearing a life jacket while boating, there are many myths and misconceptions that people have come to believe. For example, you'd be surprised how many people think they don't need to wear a life jacket if they know how to swim or if they're on a large boat with other people. They couldn't be more wrong. The sad reality is that nearly 80 percent of people who die in boating accidents are not wearing life jackets. As we gear up for another summer of water adventures in West Virginia, it's crucial to set the record straight about life jackets, also known as personal flotation devices (PFDs). Click the link to read about five common myths about life jackets and why these misconceptions are wrong. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resource encourages you to take PFDs seriously. Because your life depends on it! This week our good buddy from Australia, Jack Spinks joins us for the podcast. Anyone familiar with Jack knows two things, he's hilarious, and he kills way more than his share of critters with a bow and arrow! Jack and his mates recently returned from what can only be described as an EPIC Asiatic water buffalo hunt. Along with more fun than should legally be allowed, the boys learned some pretty interesting things along the way in regards to hunting arrows, and Jack shares some of that with us this week. Topics discussed were hunting buffalo, arrow correction time and archers paradox, no substitute for experience, practicality, and common sense.
Pitocin has been named the most over-used and abused drug in maternity care. It is increasingly used for elective induction despite the lack of FDA approval for this purpose. Rupture of the uterus is a known adverse reaction to this drug, and its use is contraindicated when there is fetal distress or overstimulation of the uterus. Few, if any, women are given full informed consent to the administration of this drug in labor. Katie Spinks is one of these women. Katie had a routine, elective induction at 39 weeks for the birth of her fourth child. Her uterus ruptured and her baby suffered a long period without oxygen. She was born with severe brain damage, unable to speak or walk, and has been given a very short life expectancy. In this episode, Katie shares the egregious care she received in labor, detailing the mistreatment by her nurse and the medical staff's refusal to listen to her pleas for help when she knew something was wrong. She also describes the overt manipulation of her medical records to remove any evidence of the use of Pitocin in her care. Katie shares with us the painstaking ways in which her life and that of her family were changed as a result, but also the deep love and connection she shares with her disabled daughter, Jolene. Among Katie's life missions is for women to receive full informed consent when it comes to Pitocin. This episode sheds light on the rare, but real, harms of a drug that is causally and excessively given to women without medical indication or complete informed consent.
