Sports fans get a healthy dose of NBA playoff hot takes, including James Harden's defense, the league pushing specific dynasty narratives, and why Jason Kidd's accountability might have cost him his job with the Mavericks. The guys also roast Marvel's CGI and controversial diversity casting choices, like a Black Captain America. From culture to controversy, today’s show delivers big headlines and even bigger conversations. The crew kicks things off with The Chi entering its eighth and final season, bringing closure to one of the longest-running Black drama series as characters face high-stakes decisions in what’s being described as the show’s most intense chapter yet. The conversation then shifts to a powerful interview with NAACP President Derrick Johnson, who breaks down concerns about voting rights and is urging top Black athletes to be more intentional about where they take their talents, as the NAACP’s “Out of Bounds” campaign calls for boycotts of schools in states accused of weakening Black political representation. The discussion blends urgency with empowerment, encouraging listeners to stay informed and engaged. Things heat up in entertainment and sports with Claressa Shields making headlines after a heated altercation with fellow boxer Alycia Baumgardner, where an on-camera slap led to backlash and even a ban from future events, highlighting ongoing tensions between the two fighters. Meanwhile, Snoop Dogg is looking to bring his own story to the big screen, revealing that his upcoming biopic—set to chronicle his rise from Long Beach to global icon—is gaining momentum following inspiration from recent music biopics. In this episode, Lukie and Dakota talk about Alycia Baumgardner's win over Bo Mi Re Shin on ESPN. It served as Most Valuable Promotions' first card in the United States on their ESPN deal. The deal started with Caroline Dubois defeating Terri Harper on Easter in the U.K., earlier this month.Dakota shared his insight about fight week being their live. We also talk about Lani Daniels upset stoppage win of Shadasia Green, who was hospitalized after the loss. Dakota takes the lead, as he covered most of Green's career. Also, Jahmal Harvey, a 2024 U.S. Olympian, got a quality win. In the U.K., light heavyweight Ben Whittaker stopped Braian Nahuel Suarez in one round. It is his second first-round stoppage, but given his pedigree in 2020, Team Great Britain Olympic silver medalist, when will he step up in competition? Since facing Liam Cameron, Whittaker has fought two opponents with little intrigue. Looking to next week, Jarrell Miller will face Lenier Pero in a WBA heavyweight title eliminator, taking place in Las Vegas, which will be telecast on DAZN.The undercard will see lightweight Alan Chaves face veteran Miguel Madueno, junior middleweight Freudis Rojas Jr facing Damian Sosa, and junior featherweight Angel Barrientes taking a step-up in competition since his 2020 loss, facing Isaac Rojas Garcia. In France, on Saturday, DAZN will telecast the 2016 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist, Tony Yoka, against Lawrence Okolie. Three notable undercard fights: Cherneka Johnson won a close fight against Amanda Galle, Yokasta Valle defeated Yadira Bustillos in a wild one, and Avious Griffin returned from a loss, stopping Justin Cardona. “It's the perfect combo between being a beauty and a beast, and understanding I can separate the two. Knowing who I am in the ring is just an animal, who works hard, been in camp for 8 weeks and then there's Alycia who wants to do her hair, get dressed up, uplift others- it really throws people off.” Alycia Baumgardner, Undisputed super featherweight boxing champion With her highly anticipated return to the ring streaming live on Netflix July 11, undisputed super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner joins The Pivot Podcast for a raw and revealing conversation just days before fight night. Known for her knockout power and unapologetic confidence, Alycia opens up about what this moment means—and the mindset it takes to stay at the top. Alycia opens up to Ryan, Channing and Fred about her journey—from overcoming early setbacks and self-doubt to rising through the ranks and capturing titles with flair both in and out of the ring. Her humble beginnings grounded by having her father as her boxing coach and life coach engrained the value of hard work, chasing dreams and being resilient. She breaks down the emotional moment of becoming world champion while sharing the heartbreak of losing her father on this journey to top of women's boxing and how it has reinvigorated her motivation beyond the ring. Going from Amatuer to Champ, we talk about the pivotal moments that shaped Alycia's boxing style and fueled her fierce determination, molding a certain part of her approach after Mike Tyson. Being mentally tough with a strong mindset, Alycia shares how she handles pressure preparing for a fight, walking to the ring and the second the bell rings how everything turns from fuel to focus. With a new trainer and signed to Jake Paul's MVP boxing, it's all about redefining women's sports, sharing her perspective on on being a champion in a male-dominated sport and paving the way for future generations. We also dive into her passions away from the ring, with mental wellness advocacy, crafting her personal brand, fashion, modeling and how visiting Africa truly changed her. This conversation is a blueprint for channelling discipline, resilience, and confidence—no matter what your arena may be and also having the courage to rewrite your own narrative. It's high stakes come July 11th, but Alycia is more than ready for the chance to be on the biggest stage at Madison Square Garden with the world watching on Netflix as she defends her title and furthers a historical movement in women's sports.
