Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his former Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Greg Ives are reunited on this episode to tell the story of how Ives made it in the sport and share previously unheard reflections on their time working together. Before Ives joins the program, Dale Jr. and co-host Mike Davis react to the weekend’s events at Talladega Superspeedway. Hear what Dale told race winner Brad Keselowski about tying his track wins record. As a known “big ass spoiler” critic, Dale weighs in on Joey Logano’s comments following his flip. What direction does he hope to see superspeedway racing go? The answer may surprise you. Isla Earnhardt will turn three-years-old this week. What birthday gift did her dad buy her that may have her making left turns soon? Hear what bug Dale may have been bitten by. Next, Ives sits down at the table and the former teammates go all the way back to his childhood. Learn about Ives’ family’s involvement in racing, when he first took an interest and how he snuck into the track as a kid. As he began racing more and finding success, college remained the goal for the Bark River, Michigan, native. Find out why he initially pursued medical school. Then he shares why his driving career didn’t work out and how falling in love with the mechanical side of racing quickly changed his plans. Dale Jr. is often asked to explain how someone can make it in racing and Ives serves as the perfect example for him to share. Hear the steps Ives took to establish himself and gain experience in the sport before getting to NASCAR. An interaction at a family reunion ultimately set Ives up for the rest of his life. He details what happened, getting a call from Hendrick Motorsports and his first interview with the organization. Then hear what he had to do to make it to Daytona in order to meet the No. 24 team during Speedweeks. Ives then talks about getting a job offer from Hendrick Motorsports and how once there, doors opened quickly and his willingness to volunteer elevated his career. He shares how he became Jimmie Johnson’s lead engineer during his five consecutive championship run and the influence Chad Knaus had on him. When Ives began contemplating his next career move, learn why he committed to staying in the HMS family and how he became a model for the working relationship between the Hendrick Cup program and JR Motorsports. Dale Jr. shares his perspective on the partnerships’ early days and where it is at today. Multiple victories and a championship with Chase Elliott later, Mr. Hendrick called Ives with his big break at the Cup level. At the request of Dale Jr., hear how Ives was selected as his next crew chief. Dale details the process behind picking a crew chief and what he was looking for after Steve Letarte left. Ives then discusses what it was like coming into the No. 88 team. When Dale suffered another concussion in 2016 and missed most of the season, Ives was thrown one of the greatest challenges of his career. He and Dale openly discuss the warning signs both of them saw and what Ives was thinking a year later when Dale decided to retire. Two weeks following Ives’ latest victory with Alex Bowman at Richmond Raceway, hear Ives discuss the ups and downs of the last three plus seasons with Bowman. They both applaud Bowman’s maturation process and the changed mindset that Ives believes is helping elevate the team. Lastly, Bowman will run a Darlington throwback scheme resembling a late model scheme Ives ran in the 90s. Hear the story behind the car, the races it ran and how Bowman shocked Ives when revealing it to him during a team meeting. In Ask Jr. Presented by Xfinity, Dale tackles topics including his thoughts on the current state of superspeedway racing and how drivers and crew chiefs study film. Learn more about your ad choices. GUESTS: Struggling and persistently fighting against family put-downs and abuse of every kind turned Dale Fiegland into a gun-toting, knife-wielding, runner for the Mafia, who was addicted to alcohol and drugs—the kind of man God loves to get ahold of and change. When Dale finally stopped fighting God and asked Him for help, miraculous events followed that can only be called a Conspiracy of Grace. This winsome tale, touched with humor, is shared in plainspoken style by a pastor/counselor unlike any you may have met. Dale’s story helps lift the spiritual veil, enabling readers to see how God works amid life’s gritty, hard-hitting realities. This book will engage and delight you and may challenge some of your ideas about God and fai Raised in northern Ohio, Dale Fiegland graduated from Anderson College, taught in the inner-city schools of Cleveland, and attained success in business before he joined the ministry. He earned a master of arts degree in counseling from Liberty University, and was the counseling pastor for twenty-five years at Riverside Church in Fort Myers, Florida. This weeks guest is Dale Vermillion. He has 36 years experience in the mortgage space and has spent the last 25 years being a leading trainer, speaker, and consultant. When Dale was 14 years old he watched his brother take his last breath in a scuba diving accident. This left his parents heartbroken and Dale always trying to make them proud. Little did he know at the time at this painful story was going to become one of his greatest gifts. Not only did this event force him to grow up fast, but it lead to him always being hungry to achieve great things. He went on to lead several mortgage company teams increasing their revenue by exponential levels. Where he learned the hard way, that when a company isn’t yours, you don’t always get the payoff you deserve. He left the corporate world and during that break he got a speaking gig. Stepping off stage he was approached by a handful of CEO’s about consulting work. This is where his company was born, Mortgage Champions. Throughout the years he discovered his passion shifted from making money, to helping others breakthrough their barriers to reach new levels of success. He learned that giving back is his why and started a philanthropy group Mortgage Professionals Providing Hope. My biggest take away from this episode is that the moments that cause us the most pain often lead to our greatest gifts and that we must find our why and serve from that place. It is our passions that get us through the hard times and if you want to achieve great things you have to have faith and be willing to risk it all. Dale Minami is a lawyer who has defended the civil rights of the Asian Americans and other minorities. His parents and his then one-year-old brother were one of 120,000 Japanese Americans the U.S. government incarcerated during the World War II. Dale was born in California and grew up to become a lawyer. He led a landmark civil rights lawsuit that overturned a 40-year-old conviction for Fred Korematsu, who refused to go to the government’s incarceration camps for Japanese Americans. After Fred Korematsu was arrested and convicted of defying the government’s order, he appealed his case all the way to the Supreme Court. In 1944, the Supreme Court ruled against him, arguing that the incarceration was justified due to military necessity. 40 years later, Dale led the charge to overturn Fred Korematsu’s conviction after finding evidences of possible governmental misconduct. In 1983, a federal judge overturned Fred Korematsu’s conviction in the same San Francisco courtroom where he had been convicted in 1944. It was a significant moment in civil rights history. Dale gave Japanese-Americans and his parents a fair trial that they never had. Dale has also co-founded Asian Law Caucus, the first nonprofit to help poor Asian-Americans with legal problems. He has always tried to boost the image of Asian Americans, and not just in the courtrooms. He produced two films, “Drinking Tea” and “Life Tastes Good” with all Asian American actors. Both films screened at the Sundance Film Festival. When Dale was in his 50s, People Magazine named him as one of America’s Top 50 Bachelors. Today’s show notes: www.celinalee.co/episode26

Two-time All-American (Tennessee), All-Star and 17-year NBA veteran, Dale Ellis. We discuss Dale's high school basketball days, followed by his outstanding four seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers, where he was twice named All-American. Dale talks about his whereabouts on NBA Draft Day, 1983, when he was selected ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks. We cover his three seasons with the Mavs, playing alongside fellow draftee Derek Harper, including these memorable finishes to games against the mighty Los Angeles Lakers. Here's the wild finish - aka 'Moody Madness' - that I asked Dale about (1984 Playoffs). Dale discusses his trade from Dallas to Seattle, where he set the NBA record for highest, single-season scoring increase - from 7.1 (1986, Dallas) to a staggering 24.9 points per game (1987, Seattle). Ellis also won Most Improved Player and in that year's Playoffs, dominated his former team, helping steer the Sonics to the Western Conference Finals. We chat about some of the many great players that Dale played with, including Nate McMillan, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Tom Chambers, Xavier McDaniel, Avery Johnson, Dennis Rodman & David Robinson. Of course, with Dale Ellis as my guest, I had to ask about his incredible three-point shooting prowess. Dale was the first player in NBA history, to make 1000 three-point field goals. He competed in numerous Three-Point Shootouts, too, including the iconic match-up with Larry Bird, in 1988 at Chicago Stadium. When Dale mentioned Michael Jordan, I didn't need to be told twice, to ask more about their battles over the years. He recalls some funny stories and talks about MJ's greatness. Dale reminisces about his fantastic 1989 season. Aside from averaging a career-high 27.5ppg and being named to the All-NBA 3rd Team, he had an All-Star Weekend for the ages, winning the Three-Point Shootout and then scored 27 points the following day, for the Western Conference All-Stars. Dale also shares a great All-Star story, talking about his idol, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, plus, playing with future Hall of Famer, John Stockton. We also discuss his seasons spent with the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and his return to Seattle in 1998, where he would lead the NBA, connecting on a staggering 46.4% of his three-point field goals. Last year (2014), Dale became just the fourth player to have his jersey retired, by the University of Tennessee. He discussed memories of his teammates, and how graduating from college (1985) was the hardest thing he has ever done in his life. We talk about the Inaugural 2015 Breakthrough Atlanta Celebrity Basketball Game, where Dale will lead his squad against former teammate, Dikembe Mutombo. Click here to learn more about this game. Our conversation also covers Dale's modern-day involvement with basketball, his future ambitions and online presence: SportsBlog | Twitter | Facebook.
