Without a clear vision or a united team, scaling feels like trying to sprint through quicksand.  What if the secret to a billion-dollar business wasn't grinding harder or chasing the next shiny object, but creating a culture so magnetic that top talent lines up to join your team, your clients can't stop raving, and growth becomes almost effortless? Most mortgage pros think hustle and rapid growth are the keys to the kingdom. But here's the hard truth: chasing short-term wins might actually be blocking your path to long-term greatness. What if the real game-changer is doing less—but doing it better—anchored in culture, purpose, and servant leadership with a patient, long term approach? In this episode, we sit down with Anthony Contento and Michele Steko of Sherwood Mortgage Group, who have cracked the code on building a billion-dollar team. They reveal how they fostered a family-like culture that inspires loyalty, strategically scaled by putting people before profits, and navigated tough markets with grace, grit, and innovation.    You'll also learn:  The power of building a “family culture” that attracts and retains top talent—because people don't join companies, they join people. How to thrive in any market, even when the wind is in your face, by focusing on what you can control and staying intentional with your actions. Why servant leadership wins the long game, and how putting people first creates magnetic, lasting success. The timeless secret to building billion-dollar relationships: connecting with 2-3 COIs (centers of influence) a day and compounding those connections into massive results. How to master your mindset and self-image to overcome fear, imposter syndrome, and self-doubt—because you can't outperform the belief you have in yourself. Why alignment matters more than chasing shiny objects, and how to find your lane for authentic, unstoppable growth. How to manage challenges with gratitude and grace, and turning adversity into your greatest asset. Guest Bio   Anthony Contento is the co-founder and CEO of Sherwood Mortgage Group, a leading mortgage brokerage in Canada. If your mortgage business relies on the trail income to pay all expenses and be profitable… this is lazy and poor business practice. In fact, you might have a cash haemorrhaging business and not be aware of it.Unfortunately the financial literacy of many brokers is not up to scratch.I've seen it.The percentage of brokers who don't know their numbers, key drivers, KPI's, profit… is scary. The percentage of brokers who run their business by taking revenue in, paying bills, and the rest is left for them… with no finger on the pulse of projections, cash, profit… essentially relying on their accountant and looking at a P&L once a quarter or year… is scary. The amount of brokers, with teams, writing $5-15m per month, that don't realise they aren't really making any money (i.e. their business isn't viable, or would be better off closing the doors and just collecting trail)... is scary. In this episode of Mortgage Broker Acceleration, I talk about money maths. Covering the concept of a Trail Book Management business vs a New Loan Writing business, and why each must be standalone profitable. I share why volume and number of deals is an irrelevant method of keeping score and success (and the only two metrics that really matter). Referrals are the lifeblood of any successful mortgage business. The majority of consumers trust referrals from people they know, yet most mortgage pros are stuck relying on inconsistent word-of-mouth and feel frustrated by the unpredictable flow of leads.   Many mortgage pros think that just doing great work will be enough to keep the referrals flowing, but hope is not a strategy. In fact, this passive approach is likely costing you business and keeping you stuck in the same frustrating cycle of feast or famine.   So ask yourself: Are you getting as many quality referrals as you could be, or are you letting valuable opportunities slip away? What if you could turn your best clients and partners into a steady flow of pre-sold business without the grind of cold calling or chasing crappy internet leads?   In this episode, we reveal the secrets to winning the referral game and building a reliable, high-quality lead stream that practically runs itself. Episode Overview:In this episode of Laugh, Lend, & Eat, we sit down with Steven Winokur, Chief Marketing Officer at Carrington Mortgage, who shares his insights into the evolving world of marketing for mortgage professionals. Steve emphasizes the importance of authenticity, particularly in video content, as a way to build genuine connections with clients and partners in a post-COVID world. With decades of experience, Steve discusses the future of marketing, the challenges AEs face, and how mortgage professionals can become trusted financial advisors for their clients. Key Themes: The Importance of Video Marketing: Steve explains how video has become essential for AEs and mortgage professionals to stay visible and maintain personal connections in a remote world. Authenticity Over Perfection: Steve stresses the value of being real and authentic in video content, encouraging AEs to focus on connection rather than trying to achieve perfection. The Role of Financial Advisors: Steve talks about how mortgage professionals should move beyond transactions and become trusted financial advisors for their clients, helping them navigate their overall financial health. Quotes from Steve's Insights: On the Value of Video Content:"I want the loan officer to see the AE in action. The connection is made virtually... The brain doesn't recognize the difference between being in person or watching it on a screen."Steve highlights the power of video in building virtual connections, making it a crucial tool for mortgage professionals in today's landscape. On Being Authentic:"You're not gonna win an Emmy, and you're not gonna be up for the Academy Awards. But that's not the point... Be who you are. That's what makes the connection real."Steve encourages AEs to embrace their imperfections in video content, emphasizing that being authentic is what truly matters when creating connections. On the Future of Mortgage Marketing:"I've been a big proponent of having AEs or loan officers talk about being more of a financial advisor... It's about asking questions and understanding their financial situation so you can help them make informed decisions."Steve stresses the importance of mortgage professionals positioning themselves as financial advisors, not just transactional agents, to build long-term trust with clients. There are levels of how hands-off you can go in business. From zero, i.e. you are responsible for everything! To completely, i.e. you are responsible for nothing. Most brokers want to end up somewhere in between. They love what they do.But they want flexibility to have a life, travel and follow passion projects.I've personally been at both ends of the spectrum. Having a business that was essentially “all me” and also a business that ran independently of me. Both have pros and cons for sure.In this episode of Mortgage Broker Acceleration, we discuss the different levels of systemisation (we call it Go Hands-Off), how to think about them and progress through the ranks. Note this month is all about systems, but it runs deeper than that, which you'll find out when you listen in. Accelerate FasterYou can visit Broker Ideas Group to learn more about us, access special events and download useful resources designed exclusively for mortgage brokers.Want to work with James, Ash and the BIG team to grow your mortgage business faster? Building systems, processes, workflows, automations and so on is a MUST in business.I know that. You know that.Even the guy down the street… who is not in business… knows that.Because without systems you have a mess… fly by the seat of your pants... business. The problem I see working with brokers, is the definition of systems, and the extent and depth of their installation… is vague and half-baked.Take an easy example.Brokers with little-to-no systems, they know this and know they need to do something about it… which is a good thing. Because if they stop working, everything stops. Here's where it gets tricky and dangerous.Brokers who do have a lot of systems in their business, think their systems are really good and are kicking goals, but in reality it's primary school level at best. If they stop working, some things keep working because of a support team in place, but many things stop and break without them.A lot of brokers have a basic system for the loan process, but have virtually no systems for lead generation, referrals, partnership nurture, marketing, admin, HR, team performance, client care, reporting, and so on.In this episode of Mortgage Broker Acceleration, we discuss the purpose of systems and the various levels of ‘system achievement' needed to go from solo broker to true business owner that is not required in any way.Accelerate FasterYou can visit Broker Ideas Group to learn more about us, access special events and download useful resources designed exclusively for mortgage brokers.Want to work with James, Ash and the BIG team to grow your mortgage business faster? Why Prioritise Business Building

Mortgage Broker Acceleration

As a mortgage broker and business owner, you can focus on two types of value. Now Value and Future Value. You also have the choice of how to invest your time (a finite resource) each day. Most invest all their time on Now Value tasks; such as generating new business, writing loans, nurturing referral partners, client care, working with support team, and so on.A focus on Now Value means you have a job, not a business. If you stop working, your business and income stops (or is greatly reduced). Now Value is about creating an income from your effort now and forever. The fundamental purpose of business is to build Future Value, and I'm not talking about building your trail book, that's very limited in thinking and one-dimensional.Future Value is doing something today that will make tomorrow easier, or even better, something you no longer have to do. Future Value is about creating an income (and asset) that doesn't require your effort in the future to generate it.If you prioritise business building, and Future Value, you will result in income generation and asset creation that is independent of you and your time.If you fail to prioritise business building, and keep chasing Now Value, you will be locked in having to trade your time and energy for money indefinitely. In this episode of Mortgage Broker Acceleration, we discuss this in more detail and share why you should switch your focus to business building and Future Value, but doing it smart so you continue to generate a solid income (Now Value).Accelerate FasterYou can visit Broker Ideas Group to learn more about us, access special events and download useful resources designed exclusively for mortgage brokers.Want to work with James, Ash and the BIG team to grow your mortgage business faster? In today's ultra-competitive market with low inventory and relatively high rates, leads are harder to come by, and yet, many are unwittingly wasting the few they do get by making costly mistakes.   The key to thriving unthriving times isn't necessarily just about getting more leads, but in converting more of the ones you already have into high-quality, high-paying clients who send referrals, give rave reviews and then come back to do repeat business,   Focusing solely on generating more leads might mean you're missing the bigger picture. The real issue often isn't the quantity of leads but the quality of your lead source and the quality of your follow-up.   Many MLOs are letting potential deals slip through their fingers by not fully capitalizing on the opportunities they already have.   Are you truly squeezing all the juice out of the opportunities you've been given, or are you letting potential deals slip through your fingers? How would your life change if you could close more deals with less stress?   In this episode, I talk to Lead Conversion Expert, Penny Wrightly, where we reveal the 3 secrets for closing more deals from fewer leads. Stop doing it the hard way and start doing it the SMART WAY.   "Whether your leads come from your client database or referral partnerships you're building, those will be your highest-quality leads and the easiest to convert." -Penny Wrightly   You'll also learn:  How to assess and improve the quality of your leads to skyrocket your conversions. The most effective follow-up strategies that turn lukewarm leads into hot, motivated prospects. Why asking for referrals is a non-negotiable step in your sales process. The crucial role systems play in your follow-up game and how to implement them the right way. A simple, yet effective strategy for attracting more high-quality leads from your existing clients. Tips for nurturing relationships with referral partners to keep your lead pipeline full - regardless of market conditions. Guest Bio Penny Wrightly is a mortgage industry veteran with over 24 years of experience, now serving as the Chief Conversion Coach at Planet Prosper. From starting as an administrator to becoming a principal broker, Penny has scaled the heights of the mortgage world, leading teams to exponential growth. She's passionate about helping mortgage pros turn hard-earned leads into consistent closings, and her deep expertise in lead conversion is second to none.   About Your Host   Considered by many to be the nation's leading Mortgage Marketing Coach, Doren Aldana is the founder of several highly acclaimed training programs, including Autopilot Referral Systems, Client Acceleration Formula and the 7-Figure Lender Academy.
