POPULARITY
Earlier this year, Connecticut lawmakers were touting UConn's popularity among high school graduates nationwide. UConn has a record-breaking freshman class this year but what's the catch with this stellar headline? Apparently, there's a real housing crisis for upper classman across the five UConn campuses. We got the scoop from Katie Servas, News Director for WHUS, UConn's radio station. Image Credit: Getty Images
Bicycle Talk. Episode 385 March 6th 2024 Ron's Rant: Apologies to my radio listeners on last week's show. Technical issue. You will find it on WHUS.ORG. On a positive side: 60 degree weather in early March! Uconn Huskies cap both Men's and Women's Big East Titles! Here come the classics. Big weekend in Europe as […]
This is a milestone episode for two reasons. As you may have noticed, it's our 200th episode. Technically we had about 20 episodes prior to numbering them, but these are mini lessons and not really full episodes. These started when we were broadcasting live from WHUS 91.7 FM.The other milestone is that September 1st marks 10 years of DNA Today. We released our first episode in 2012. Back then our host and producer, Kira Dineen, was starting her senior year of high school, fast forward a decade and now she has her masters in genetics and has been practicing as a genetic counselor for 2 years! As a high schooler she dreamed of reaching people around the world, little did she think she would be producing DNA Today ten years later with two Podcast Awards, ranking in top 1% of podcasts globally with 40+ sponsors. This journey has been incredible. We have had countless guests on the podcast that have brought immense insight into the field of genetics, the life of living with a genetic condition or caring for someone who does, groundbreaking advancements in genetic technology, discussions exploring the ethics surrounding this technology, and so many more important conversations. During this episode we are looking back at the last 10 years and 200 episodes. We are featuring your voices. Voices of people that make this show possible. Listeners. Team members. Guests. And more. So you will hear these voice memos sharing people's favorite episodes, followed by clips from the episodes. We want to thank you so much. DNA Today would not be successful without you. It's your downloads, engagement, and support that keep this show going. We are so passionate about educating the world about genetics, it's you that keeps us going. I am humbled by your support and honored to be in this role. Shoutout to the following listeners, guests, and DNA Today team members for submitting voices memos featured in this celebratory episode: Corinne Merlino, Sophia Saladino, Ashlyn Enokian, Katie Lee, Amanda Andreoli, Daniel DeFabio, Faith McCarthy, Laura Markham, Paloma Boeck, Taila Stanford, Sanya Tinaikar, Kajal Patel, and Mahfuz Taofeeq. Greetings! On today's program, I'm happy to open with new music from a long-time friend of PTE, guitarist Kevin Kastning in tandem with pianist, Laszlo Gardony from their new release of improvisations, "Levitations I". In addition, continuing PTE tradition of bringing attention to music from the state of Connecticut, my home state and home of WHUS, the show closes with music from CT-based musician Liquid Terrain (Tim Wolf) and the New London Drone Orchestra, of which Tim is a member. It's been a little over four years since UConn 360's humble origins in a conference room on North Eagleville Road, and now we have 100 episodes under our award-winning belts. Join us for a star-studded celebration that includes such beloved characters from the UConn 360 Cinematic Universe as co-founder Ken Best, who tells us about an exhibit he's working on that will be on display in Homer Babbidge Library; former student worker extraordinaire Maxine Philavong '20, who fills us in on her life in the Big Apple and delivers the stunning news that UConn 360 was actually helpful in pursuing a post-graduation career; and Steve Winchell '08, podcaster, artist, all-around great guy, and UConn 360 super fan, who offers some sure-to-be provocative thoughts on which dorms on campus are the best. Greetings, Friends. Having received my second COVID booster on Wednesday and having my typical reaction, which is essentially like having COVID come and tap you on the shoulder and say, "Remember me?" (I had it last January. Feh.) I took a steady stream of Tylenol on Thursday so I could wrap up this weeks program and get the files in to WHUS. So not the most "sparkling" vocal presentation, but functional. Enjoy and stay safe! Richard Melville Hall was born September 11, 1965, in the Manhattan, New York City, in the Harlem neighborhood to Elizabeth McBride (née Warner) and James Frederick Hall. His mother was a medical secretary and his father a professor of chemistry. The nickname Moby was assigned by his father, and was a reference to the book "Moby-Dick". Moby claims that Herman Melville, the author of "Moby-Dick" is his Great-Great-Great-Uncle. Moby's father died in a car accident when he was two years old after which his mother moved them first to San Francisco in 1969, and then between the Connecticut towns of Darien and Stratford. At the age of nine, Moby began to play classical guitar and piano and then studied jazz, music theory, and percussion. In 1983, he joined the punk band the Vatican Commandos as a guitarist. Moby formed AWOL, known as a post punk group, and released a self-titled EP where he is credited as Moby Hall. Moby studied philosophy at the University of Connecticut and began to move from classical instruments toward electronic music, starting as a DJ for the college radio station WHUS. He transferred to State University of New York at Purchase, continuing to study philosophy and gaining interest in photography, but dropped out of college completely to pursue a DJ career. Today, Moby is known as an electronic music pioneer, vegan, and activist championing causes to bring awareness to animal welfare and climate change. This Episode is Powered by @Pirelliusa @Pirelli

Episode Notes This week we revisit an episode that originally aired on the C19 Podcast on 20 November 2018 as "'Modern Slavery'? How 19th Century Slavery Can Speak to 21st Century Trafficking." Can 19th-century approaches to slavery provide a map for thinking about 21st century trafficking? In this episode, Anna Mae Duane (UConn)leads a dialogue about how we can--and can’t--bring the nineteenth century to bear on the current phenomenon largely referred to as “Modern Slavery”--a term that is itself deeply controversial. The conversation centers around the edited collection, Child Slavery Before and After Emancipation: An Argument for Child-Centered Slavery Studies (Cambridge UP, 2017). Editor Anna Mae Duane interviews three contributors to that project, Karen Sánchez-Eppler (Amherst), Micki McElya (UConn) and Sarah Winter (UConn). Together they think about what constitutes a usable past when thinking about modern forms of oppression, and about how focusing on children can help us to rethink questions of property, memory, and freedom. The episode was produced by Ali Oshinskie with the support of WHUS studios. Post-production assistance by Doug Guerra.
