Today's guest on the OneHaas Alumni Podcast is D'Juan Wilcher, the Deputy Director of the George W. Bush Presidential Center and a 2022 graduate of the executive MBA program at Haas. D'Juan comes from a military family with deep roots in Gary, Indiana. After getting his bachelor's degree at Indiana University, he decided to join the Navy as an officer. Over the course of his 14 years in the military, D'Juan learned the importance of putting service at the center of all of his work. D'Juan sits down with host Sean Li to chat about his time in the military, including the culture shock he felt arriving in Japan and his experience joining as an officer. They also discuss his decision to get an MBA at Haas and the impactful work the Bush Center does for veterans. *OneHaas Alumni Podcast is a production of Haas School of Business and is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:On his family's values around educationI also grew up in a home that was full of love, not full of very much money, not full of very much access. But my mother, she was definitely one who was big on education. She showed it when she was in school and she told us to lean into it the same way. I'm an advocate of public education for that reason. Every school that I've attended from the beginning all the way through Haas has been a public institution. Most of the time that has been by deliberate choice. On earning the respect of his subordinates as a Naval officerThe way that I earn respect from them is from showing up every day. This was the most instructive period of my professional career, was that you show up. That's half the battle,  right? Because some people don't. They just mail it in. That was the first way to earn their respect. Two, know my damn job. Take it seriously. I am new, so when they came to me, they expected to see my nose in a book. They expected to see me asking questions, being curious. Figuring it out so that I can get better to be a better leader for them. On his decision to go to HaasI'm looking down the road, and I can see the water, and I'm like, this is a done deal. This is a beautiful school, beautiful campus. Then I go to the classes, like, yeah, I like this approach. I went with my classmates. We had drinks and dinner afterwards. It's like, this is a done deal. I started my application and that's the end of that story. I never looked back at any other school. I didn't apply. This was my target school and I got in. On some of the work the Bush Center is doing for veteransWe recognize that part of the reason why people don't get to mental health care is because it can be difficult to navigate. So we've thought of creating an easy button whereby we have essentially a concierge service to do an intake. We have all these clinicians and veterans service organizations to help identify whatever supports you might need and we connect you for free. Your services that they get are for free and this year we've been able to reach 2,000 people. Show Links:LinkedIn ProfileSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

It was initially devastating when Jim Wilcher's business imploded 20 years ago. And then he took time to slow down, become introspective, and grow from the experience. Jim shares with host Meredith Bell what he learned about himself during this self-discovery process and how he applies the lessons today in his work with clients.A key aspect of Jim's inner work involved meditation and journaling, which expanded his understanding of mindfulness and the role his ego had played in his life. You'll discover how Jim's earlier work helping companies focus on their identity in the creation of their brand has a parallel in his work with individual clients. Who are you really? What is true for you? This is a conversation packed with brilliant insights that will touch your mind, heart, and spirit. Jim is a gifted storyteller who brings you to the scene with him, and you are sure to identify with the emotions he felt around the life events he reveals. Jim also describes what he's learned—and helps his clients learn—about sensing what's going on with another person in order to respond in a way that truly connects with them. Jim shared the transformative power of attending live events, like The Ultimate Experience in Phoenix that he attended in January, 2024. He encouraged listeners to do whatever it takes to attend The Ultimate Experience Birmingham, England, on May 25-26, 2024, where a deeply transformative experience awaits. In the world of entrepreneurship, challenges are commonplace, but for Black-owned businesses, these hurdles can be especially daunting. Marvin Wilcher, CEO of Camp Nova, a marketing, media, and brand design company, believes that dwelling on these disadvantages can hinder the progress of new entrepreneurs."Yes, there is a disadvantage in being an African American-owned business in some industries," admits Wilcher. However, he also emphasizes that overcoming these challenges can transform individuals into better businesspeople.Emery Morrison, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer at Camp Nova, echoes this sentiment. He believes that excelling in business not only benefits their own enterprise but also opens doors for other African Americans. "When you have an opportunity to hire, you give us and other people who look like that — opportunities,” says Morrison. On this episode of "The Word with Jackie Rae" podcast, Morrison delved into his background in hip-hop, explaining how it led him to the creation of branded cell phones. Meanwhile, Wilcher revealed how offering part of his land to cannabis farmers paved the way for his entry into the cannabis business. So much time and energy has been spent this college basketball offseason focusing on the new whirlwind of activity in the transfer portal – including Carolina losing seven players (Caleb Love, Puff Johnson, Dontrez Styles, D'Marco Dunn, Tyler Nickel, Justin McKoy, Will Shaver) and getting four players (Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, Paxson Wojcik, Jae'lyn Withers) – and discussing possible reclassifications that we've not had our usual amount of focus and attention on the incoming freshmen. It's time to change that. Zayden High and Simeon Wilcher bring intriguing skill sets to the Tar Heels in 2023-24. What will they specifically add to this, their first edition of UNC? What will their roles be? What are their likely floors and ceilings? Turning to the football field, Michael Merdinger is the QB commit for the class of 2024. ESPN (Jeff Borzello) released their most recent way-too-early Top 25 college basketball rankings on Monday. North Carolina has moved up from 23rd to 19th. Host Isaac Schade thinks that's not only too high, but that the Tar Heels shouldn't currently be ranked at all, despite getting back RJ Davis and Armando Bacot. Hubert Davis' squad needs to prove they belong before they should be invited to the party. In the top 25 blurb, Borzello lists his projected starting lineup for North Carolina, which includes Cormac Ryan, Simeon Wilcher, and Harrison Ingram in addition to Davis and Bacot. Isaac Schade's starting lineup is the same but switching Jae'lyn Withers in and Wilcher out. Who's correct? KJ Davis tweeted again on Monday, but only to say that he had been silenced; still no news. The tennis (men's and women's) NCAA Tournament brackets were revealed on Monday evening, with the women No. 1 overall and the men No. 16 overally. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Episode 129 Colby WilcherIn January, 2022,27 year-old father of 3 Colby Wilcher vanished under mysterious circumstances out of Holt, Florida. Colby's family was worried because it wasn't like Colby to drop from sight, and he was supposed to start a new job. Days turned into weeks without answers. During the time he was gone, there were suspicious posts and communications from Colby's phone and social media, and those closest to Colby wondered if it was really Colby who was doing the communicating. On April 11, 2022, almost 3 months after he went missing, Colby's body was found by fisherman south of the Shoal River Bridge off Okaloosa County Road 393 near Dorcas. This location was several miles from where Colby was last seen. It was determined that Colby was the victim of a homicide and had been shot once in the head. The news was devastating for Colby's family & friends. Now they knew where he was, but it only led to more questions. How did Colby wind up dead in the water, who killed him, and why?In this episode, Colby's brother Michael discusses the loss of his brother and his fight to get justice for Colby. Anyone with information on Wilcher is asked to call the OCSO at 850-651-7400 or contact Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers anonymously at 850-863-TIPS,If you would like to contribute to a Gofund me to help support Colby's children, please visit this linkTo learn more about Colby's case, be sure to check out this Facebook groupTo support this podcast with a donation, you can do so via Patreon at:https://www.patreon.com/TheMurderInMyFamilyor through Paypal at:https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/AbJackEntertainmentTo contact the podcast or learn more about the case we discuss, please visit:TheMurderInMyFamily.comFollow us on social media;Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/pg/The-Murder-in-My-Family-True-Crime-Podcast-998674943627334/reviews/Twitter-@MurderinMyFam
