North Carolina is number five overall and the top two seed in the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee's top 16 reveal from this past Saturday. Compared to where the Tar Heels are in some other metrics (AP Poll, KenPom, NET, Torvik, etc.), this is considerably higher. But here's the good news: the Selection Committee's decision is all that ultimately matters when it comes to NCAA Tournament seeding. North Carolina, led by RJ Davis, Armando Bacot, and Harrison Ingram, simply needs to keep stacking wins down the stretch. With Cormac Ryan seemingly finding his stride and Elliot Cadeau seeming more confident all the time, Hubert Davis' team appears to be in great shape. The ACC announced that they will stay at 20 league games and just 15 teams in the ACC Tournament next season. The North Carolina Tar Heels captured the first matchup with Duke of the season, Hubert Davis' first home win over the Blue Devils and first win over new coach Jon Scheyer. UNC was able to get the nine-point victory with RJ Davis having an extraordinary performance, in fact he was the third leading scorer behind Armando Bacot and Harrison Ingram, who both recorded 20-point, 10-rebound double-doubles. Seth Trimble added 10 points off the bench – can he do that more consistently? Cormac Ryan showed his veteran savvy in two specific moments, responding immediately to miscues with a winning play. On Tuesday night ACC Network released the 2023-24 conference basketball schedule. North Carolina, along with the other 14 schools in the conference, will play a 20-game league schedule with home games only against Louisville, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest; road games only against Boston College, Georgia Tech, Pitt, and Virginia; and home-and-home series with Duke, NC State, Clemson, FSU, Miami, and Syracuse. Hubert Davis' squad plays FSU at home during the non-conference schedule, between UConn and Kentucky. In the main part of the ACC slate, the Tar Heels will face three straight road games – at Pitt, at Clemson, and at NC State. ESPN released the matchups for the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday, June 28. The North Carolina men will host Tennessee on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:15pm ET in the Dean E. Smith Center. This should be an exciting matchup between Hubert Davis' squad led by RJ Davis and Armando Bacot against Rick Barnes' Vols led by Zakai Zeigler, Santiago Vescovi, and Josiah-Jordan James. Mack Brown got great news on Tuesday evening when class of 2025 QB Bryce Baker committed to the Tar Heels. It's the fourth time in the last seven cycles for Carolina to land the top in-state quarterback. Baker is the first commit in the 2025 class and should be a great building block for the class. Following D'Marco Dunn's transfer out, North Carolina now has three scholarships to utilize, if they so choose, for the 2023-24 season. Hubert Davis' third team will return four scholarship players from last season (Armando Bacot, RJ Davis, Jalen Washington, Seth Trimble) while adding two freshmen (Simeon Wilcher, Zayden High) and four transfers (Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, Jae'lyn Withers, & Paxson Wojcik). ESPN (Jeff Borzello) released their most recent way-too-early Top 25 college basketball rankings on Monday. North Carolina has moved up from 23rd to 19th. Host Isaac Schade thinks that's not only too high, but that the Tar Heels shouldn't currently be ranked at all, despite getting back RJ Davis and Armando Bacot. Hubert Davis' squad needs to prove they belong before they should be invited to the party. In the top 25 blurb, Borzello lists his projected starting lineup for North Carolina, which includes Cormac Ryan, Simeon Wilcher, and Harrison Ingram in addition to Davis and Bacot. Isaac Schade's starting lineup is the same but switching Jae'lyn Withers in and Wilcher out. Who's correct? KJ Davis tweeted again on Monday, but only to say that he had been silenced; still no news. North Carolina needs more personnel in the frontcourt. Tennessee forward Olivier Nkamhoua is in the transfer portal and would make an interesting option for Hubert Davis' team alongside Armando Bacot, Jalen Washington, and Zayden High. UNC's spring football game will take place tomorrow (Saturday, April 15) at Kenan Stadium. Last year featured the uncertainty of who would replace Sam Howell under center. That drama is gone with Drake Maye bursting onto the scene last season. The questions now involve those surrounding Maye: Who will replace Josh Down and Antoine Greene at WR? Will the lines perform better? Can Gene Chizik find LB depth behind Cedric Gray and Power Echols? Who will emerge from the RB room? What will the offense look like under a new OC? After a subpar year for UNC, and a strong closing run for Vanderbilt, many in the Carolina fan base have begun rumbling about Jerry Stackhouse as a potential replacement for Hubert Davis. This is just silly and the numbers prove it. Not only is it too early to even think about firing Coach Davis, Coach Stackhouse, one of the greatest Tar Heels of all time, is not the right fit, at least with things as they are now. North Carolina made a concerted early effort to play through Armando Bacot at Wake Forest, but couldn't stop Wake Forest's offensive attack led by Tyree Appleby. Caleb Love and RJ Davis had another rough first half, although Love was able to salvage things in the 2nd half. It appears that Davis' finger is still bothering him. Carolina got strong contributions from Puff Johnson. The game was a curious tale of two different halves. In the first, Hubert Davis' squad scored 25, tying a season-low for points in any half. In the second half, the Tar Heels posted 60 points, setting a new season high for points in any half. But things started coming out on Monday that started pointing towards UNC, some insiders started flipping their Crystal Ball predictions, and next thing you knew, Ian Jackson was unzipping a jacket to reveal a “North Carolina” logo. North Carolina lost ACC Preseason Player of the Year Armando Bacot to an ankle injury less than two minutes into Tuesday night's game at Virginia, where the Tar Heels have now lost eight in a row. With fellow starting front court player Pete Nance already sidelined, and despite a valiant effort from RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, Jalen Washington, Seth Trimble and others, Hubert Davis' team could not get their first true road win of the season. Washington played wonderfully filling in for Bacot, finishing with 13 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes. The North Carolina basketball losing streak has extended to four games and the Tar Heels are in serious jeopardy of dropping out of the AP Top 25 when it refreshes on Monday. Armando Bacot and D'Marco Dunn missed the game with injuries. Dunn will likely be out for some time with a broken hand. The Roy Williams-era Tar Heels rebounded at or the near top of the NCAA on an annual basis. Heading into Hubert Davis' first year at the helm for UNC, many wondered how his more modern lineup would fare in the rebounding department. Would trading two traditional bigs for one traditional center and a stretch-four yield the same results. After losing Day'Ron Sharpe to the NBA and Walker Kessler (Auburn) and Garrison Brooks (Mississippi State) to transfer, would Armando Bacot, as the lone holdover be able to replicate the success Carolina has long-enjoyed on the glass? The answer, it turns out, is “sort of”. Overall, UNC rebounded at a level commensurate to Roy Williams teams. The one area that was lacking was offensive rebounding; and Hubert Davis is likely okay with that outcome. Why? The Carolina offensive attack under Coach Davis yields many more three-point attempts than it did under Coach Williams. Three-point shots often lead to longer rebounds, which are less predictable in terms securing the basketball. Overall, Carolina was sixth in the nation in total rebounds per game, third in in defensive rebounds per game, and third in rebound margin. Hubert Davis' first team at UNC averaged 77.9 points per game, which would have been 12th amongst teams in the Roy Williams era. Armando Bacot led the way for the Tar Heels with 16.3 points per game. Three other Tar Heels averaged double-digit scoring, Caleb Love (15.9), Brady Manek (15.1), and RJ Davis (13.5). Carolina held a +6.6 scoring margin over their opponents, a mark that would have only bested three Roy Williams era teams – 2009-10, 2019-20, and 2020-21. The Heels return 71.2% of their scoring including four of their top five in terms of points scored last season. Along with Manek, the other players the Tar Heels will be without are transfers Dawson Garcia, Anthony Harris, and Kerwin Walton. Given the fact that five different players led the team in scoring and five different players had at least one 20-point game, this is a “pick your poison” type team that opposing defenses will have trouble game-planning for. Can Pete Nance step in and make up for Brady Manek's scoring production? Can any of the freshmen chip in buckets here and there? Will Leaky Black, Puff Johnson, or Dontrez Styles increase their scoring? Can the Tar Heels as a unit boost their scoring average north of 80? We'll find out soon enough! It was a big weekend for the North Carolina Tar Heels as RJ Davis and Caleb Love both announced their plans to return to Chapel Hill for their junior years. For Hubert Davis, it means he'll have four of his five starters back from 2022's National Runner-Up. Love and Davis join Armando Bacot and Leaky Black who had each already announced their return. The North Carolina Tar Heels incredible 2022 NCAA Tournament run continues after defeating the Duke Blue Devils 81-77 in the biggest National Semifinal in NCAA Tournament history on Saturday evening. Mike Krzyzewski's long and illustrious career comes to a close with his freshman star Paolo Banchero recording a double-double. Carolina got another monster second half contribution from Caleb Love after being carried offensively by RJ Davis in the first half. Armando Bacot suffered a lower body injury during the game, but yet his teammates were able to pull out the victory. Leaky Black once again shut down AJ Griffin, limiting him to just six points on 1-7 FG and 0-4 3FG. Not too shabby. The fifth-seeded North Carolina women's team went to Arizona and defeated the fourth-seeded Wildcats on Monday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 63-45. The University's COVID-19 vaccination clinic opened Mar. 31 for student vaccinations. Campus Health was approved by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as a vaccine provider and received a 2,000 dose allocation for the week to be distributed to students.
