Between 2009 and March 2016, authorities searching Boston area waterways recovered the bodies of at least 11 people, mostly young men, who had previously been reported missing. This happens across the world - from small towns to huge cities. In England, 61 bodies, mostly of young men, were recovered from the canals of Greater Manchester between 2008 and 2014.Could all these deaths really just be accidents or is there something more at play here?Join us for this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast as we discuss the possibility of Smiley Face Killer/s being responsible for some of these disappearances and deaths. Are a network of domestic terrorists working together to carry out these crimes? We also discuss some cases where Smiley Face graffiti was found near a location where a previously missing man was found dead - - A smiley face was found painted on an overpass near where Dakota James' body was found.- Tommy Booth went missing from a bar in 2008 and his body was found in a creek behind the venue two weeks later. A smiley face was painted on a wall under the deck of the bar.- Lucas Homan went missing from La Cross, Wisconsin in 2009. He left a bar to walk home with a friend and was not seen alive again. The friend woke up the next day in the ER with a head injury and no memory of what happened. Lucas' body was pulled from the Mississippi River days after and a smiley face was found painted near the scene.- Todd Geib went missing in 2005 from Michigan. His body was found three weeks later in a lake that had already been searched. A smiley face had been spray-painted on a tree near where his body was found, and a smiley face sticker was later placed on his gravesite.- William Hurley went missing in Boston in 2009 after leaving a Bruins game. His body was found in the Charles River six days later and there was a smiley face painted near the scene. You can listen to this episode on Spotify here - and Apple here- In our last episode, we did a deep dive on the cases of 6 men who had vanished and were either found in waterways or are still missing. William Hurley (or “whurley” as he prefers to be called) is a philanthropist, entrepreneur, and open-source advocate, whose work at Apple, IBM, and in the area of quantum computing is world-renowned. Picking up where we left off in part 1, SolarWinds Head Geek Leon Adato and whurley explore a range of topics – everything from the state of the tech industry in Austin; to career advice for those just starting out (as well as those who've been around the NOC a few times); to the things whurley wishes people would ask him. Give it a listen or read the transcript.
William Hurley (or “whurley” as he prefers to be called) is a philanthropist, entrepreneur, and open-source advocate, who's achieved what many geeks only dream of, including critically recognized work at Apple, IBM, and CERN. He's started and sold businesses; invented, invested, published, advised, and mentored. Currently, he's best known his thoughts on—and experience with— quantum computing. SolarWinds Head Geek Leon Adato asks about the insights whurley's gleaned from his work in quantum computing as it applies to everyday IT. But the conversation didn't stop there. Like the magical path of a quantum particle, William Hurley's journey is a bit unusual. He started two companies that were both acquired quickly. Then his third company was acquired by Goldman Sachs on their one-year anniversary. And he discovered this rapid success was depriving him of the opportunity to grow. So his fourth company, Strangeworks, is built for the long haul. Currently, they're not even developing a product—they're merely building community around a technology that's not even yet available, quantum computing. But William insists it soon will be, and you'd best prepare. In this edition of Founders Journey, Williams discusses some of his early successes and why they led him to explore this remarkable new technology. He also discusses the biggest mistakes people make when seeking funding.
William Hurley had a vision—begin an open source space for people to collaborate in quantum computing. It didn't work out. So he decided to start his own company. And just as the quantum world is a little strange, so is his startup, Strangeworks. They're not selling a product—at least, not yet. Instead, they're building community and offering free resources, which includes tools you can use on their website to begin working in quantum computing right now. In this episode of UpTech Report, William talks about why he believes quantum computing is important, when we can expect this new technology to have a real impact in the marketplace, and ways you can get involved today. “I don't care what company you use,” he says, “I do care that you get involved.”
Implanting chips into your brain, inter-dimensional travel and quantum computing. Just a few years ago this would have all seemed like science fiction but in this day and age, we're able to achieve some extraordinary things. Today I'm joined by tech entrepreneur and investor William Hurley, better known for his open-source community name ‘whurley'. Whurley knows his stuff about technology, the recent advancements we've been making and what's really possible in the future. Now I'm far from an intellect when it comes to things like quantum computing and open source software, but whurley dumbs it down for me in a way I can understand. We talk about the different things technology is enabling us to do, how we got here, and the moral implications involved with where we're heading. We cover sci-fi stuff like interplanetary species, time travel, or whether we are in a simulation and how real our reality is. We also break down Elon Musk and SpaceX and how the Flat Earth movement and other conspiracy theories impact us. An incredibly clever man I'm left with my head spinning about travelling to other planets as some kind of advanced multi-limbed superhuman… “Sometimes as creators, inventors and scientists, we spend so much time wondering if we can do something that we never stop to think if we should.” – whurley Time Stamps: 06:38 – What it's like to succeed during Covid and the guilt that comes with that success. 09:31 – The difficulties with launching a product while promotional events are cancelled. 15:54 – What a quantum computer is and where the term ‘quantum' comes from. 23:43 – How quantum computing affects us in our day to day lives. 25:07 – Elon Musk, the team behind him, and how he's planning on getting to Mars. 27:18 – The value of inter-dimensional travel and the moral issues involved with it. 33:38 – Planting chips in your brain and the beneficial ways that can be used. 37:55 – The future of biohacking and the moral implications of where we're heading. 49:44 – The possibilities of time travel. 58:57 – The importance of open source and why it's so valuable. On October 8, 2009, William Hurley disappeared from Boston, Massachusetts. He had been attending a Boston Bruins game at TD Garden and had called his fiancée to pick him up halfway through the match. She drove to the stadium, but when she arrived, Hurley was nowhere in sight. She called him to find out where he was waiting, and she heard him ask someone where he was. A man said "99 Nashua Street,” and Hurley told her his cell phone was going dead. She drove to the address, but Hurley was not there. That was the last time anyone heard from Hurley until a week later when his body was found in the Charles river. Not far from where he was last heard from. Learn more about your ad choices. There's been a lot of talk about quantum computing lately, but what exactly is it, and what are some practical applications that it may have? These are just a few of the topics discussed by William Hurley, CEO of Strange works, which is a company that launched earlier this year during a South by Southwest Keynote presentation and raised $4 million just in seed money. The main goal of the company is to make quantum computing technology more understandable to the layperson and more accessible to developers. Right now, the Strangeworks platform offers developers and enterprises a way to become familiar with the technology by performing quantum experiments, as well as a timeline of the likely advances in this technology. Hurley believes that within 24 to 36 months, quantum computing will be usable and produce real enterprise outcomes. Quantum computing has come a long way in the past few years, but it has a ways to go. Among many other topics, Hurley discusses what he believes to be the two main factors holding back quantum computing: high cost and the unsolved problem of error correction. Despite the challenges, the potential of quantum computing is exciting and has the potential to change the world.
