Lake Oconee, Georgia, located halfway between Augusta and Atlanta, is a man-made paradise with incredible beauty that makes it a great vacation destination for people of all ages. More than that, though, it's a community for those that are looking for a p

Today's episode is one that I believe will resonate with a great many people in our community, because whether we realize it or not, almost all of us are walking through some season of aging care… either for ourselves, our parents, a spouse, or someone we deeply love. My guest is Abbie Vogt from A-Bridge Aging Life Care Management, a practice dedicated to helping older adults and their families navigate the often complicated, emotional, and overwhelming world of aging care. And let's be honest, most families are not fully prepared for it. Questions about healthcare, independence, memory concerns, safety, living arrangements, and long-term planning can quickly become stressful and emotional. Add in adult children living in different cities, busy schedules, and a healthcare system that can feel incredibly complex… and it's easy for families to feel lost. That's where Abbie and her team come in. In this conversation, we'll talk about what Aging Life Care Management actually is, the warning signs families shouldn't ignore, how to preserve dignity and independence as we age, and why having an advocate and guide during these seasons can make all the difference. This episode isn't about fear. It's about preparation, compassion, and helping people age with dignity, support, and peace of mind. So whether you're caring for aging parents, thinking about your own future, or simply trying to better understand the journey ahead, I think you'll find this conversation incredibly valuable. It's funny how fast time moves. Four years ago, almost to the day, I sat down to record the very first episode of Lure of the Lake. At the time, I didn't know if anyone would listen, whether I'd figure out what I was doing… or whether I was just a guy with a microphone and a high confidence level! Fittingly, my very first guest was Deano Cantrell from Freedom Boat Club of Lake Oconee. Well, four years later, both the podcast and Freedom Boat Club have grown significantly! Since that first episode, we've watched Lake Country continue to grow, boating explode in popularity, and Freedom Boat Club become a huge part of the lake lifestyle for so many people here at Oconee. And now, Deano is preparing for another big chapter — expanding operations into Lake Sinclair. So today's episode is part reunion, part celebration, and part look ahead at what's next. We'll talk about how boating has changed over the last few years, crazy things that happen around docks when you hand people the keys to a boat, why the boat club concept keeps growing, and what the boat club's expansion into Sinclair means for local boaters! And along the way, we may also reflect on how things have changed and evolved around here. One thing's for sure, Deano and I have become and remain close friends and we both look forward to the next 4 years! So whether you're a longtime listener, a boating enthusiast, or just someone who loves hearing how local businesses evolve and grow, this is going to be a fun one! These will be published with your show on Spotify, Apple, etc. exactly as written, please bear that in mind as you format them with emojis, bullets, etc. Today on Lure of the Lake, we're talking about one of those wonderful community traditions that proves some events are so much more than a date on the calendar. Every year, the Putnam County Dairy Festival brings people together in the heart of Eatonton for a day filled with family fun, local pride, food, vendors, entertainment, a parade, the Terrapin Trot, and plenty of reasons to remember why this community is so special. But the Dairy Festival is more than funnel cakes, festival shirts, and finding the best spot along the parade route, although, let's be honest, those are all noble pursuits. This festival is rooted in Putnam County's history and heritage. For generations, dairy farming helped shape this area, and the festival continues to celebrate that heritage while bringing families, businesses, volunteers, and visitors together for one of the most anticipated events of the year. And behind it all is the Pilot Club of Eatonton, a group of dedicated community servants who work year-round to help make this event happen. Festivals like this do not magically appear overnight. They are built by people who care, who serve, and who believe that traditions matter. Today, we'll talk with Glenda Ridley, the godmother of the Dairy Festival, about the history, what visitors can expect this year, what goes into planning an event of this size, and why this long-standing celebration continues to mean so much to the community and beyond. Today's episode is a little different, and important... As we approach upcoming local elections, we wanted to create something that feels increasingly rare… a space for thoughtful, respectful conversation about the future of Putnam County. This is not a debate. There are no rebuttals. And you won't hear candidates speaking about one another. Instead, each candidate, in contested races for County Commissioner in District 3 & 4, and County Commission Chair, have been invited to share their own vision, their priorities, their plans, and what they believe the future of this community can look like. Our goal is simple: to give you, the listener, a clear and positive way to hear directly from those who are asking for your vote… so you can make an informed decision based on ideas, leadership, and vision. We'll hear briefly from each candidate individually, with the same format and a consistent set of questions. So whether you are on the lake, in the car, or at home, we're glad you're with us. Let's meet the candidates now! Today's episode is about leadership, community, and what can happen when a group of people decides that a real need deserves a real response. Recently, the 2026 Leadership Putnam Class celebrated graduation at Rock Eagle, marking the end of a program designed to help emerging and established leaders better understand our community, build lasting relationships, and discover new ways to serve. But this class did far more than simply complete the program. They left a lasting mark. As part of their class project, they took on a major need for Putnam General Hospital: replacing a commercial HVAC unit. Now, that may not sound glamorous at first, but in a hospital, reliable climate control is not a luxury. It is essential for patients, staff, equipment, and care. What began as a need turned into an extraordinary community effort. This Leadership Putnam class raised more than $140,000 to make that replacement possible. That is not just impressive. That is transformational. Joining me today are three of the class members behind that successful project: Jackson Embry, Amanda Taylor, and TJ McElhenney. We'll talk about their Leadership Putnam experience, what they learned, how this project came to be, how the class rallied the community, and why programs like Leadership Putnam matter so much to the future of Putnam County. This is a story about service, teamwork, and leadership in action; leadership as influence, not position. And in this case, that influence helped bring comfort, support, and critical infrastructure to one of our community's most important institutions. What if I told you that one of the most important stories ever told… isn't finished yet—and you're part of it? Right now, in Putnam County, something remarkable is happening. A traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution has made its first stop in Georgia—not in Atlanta, not in Savannah—but right here in our own backyard. It's called Voices and Votes: Democracy in America… and it's far more than a walk through history. This exhibit brings to life nearly 250 years of the American experiment—how a nation built on the idea of “of, by, and for the people” has been shaped, challenged, tested, and reimagined by every generation. But what makes this truly special… is that it doesn't just tell the national story. It tells our story. Alongside the national exhibit is a powerful look at the history of democracy right here in Putnam County—real people, real voices, and real moments that have helped shape this community in ways most of us have never fully seen or understood. And here's the thing—this isn't a passive experience. It's interactive. It's engaging. It might even challenge the way you think about your role in the ongoing story of this country. Because democracy isn't something that just happened. It's something that continues to happen—through action, through participation… and through people. Today, I'm joined by Chip Bell of the Georgia Writers Museum to talk about this incredible exhibit, why it matters right now, and why this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community. So whether you're a history buff… a curious learner… or just someone who wants to better understand the story we're all living in— You're going to want to hear this. And more importantly… you're going to want to experience it. You know, one of the things I've learned from doing this podcast… is that the health of a community isn't just about hospitals or doctor's offices. It's about information. It's about access. And most importantly… it's about the conversations we're willing to have. Recently, I had the opportunity to spend some time at the Lake Oconee Health Fair, surrounded by some incredibly knowledgeable professionals, researchers, and providers who are right here in our region, doing work that is not only impressive… but in many cases, life-changing. And as I listened to these keynote speakers, I found myself thinking something pretty simple: More people need to hear this. Not just the folks who were in the room that day… but all of us. So today, you're going to hear a couple of those conversations, a glimpse of what's happening in the world of health and wellness right here around Lake Oconee. But more importantly… this is the beginning of something new. We're launching a new podcast called Health at the Lake ,where we'll be sitting down with doctors, specialists, and experts to talk about the issues that matter most… especially as we age, but really for anyone who wants to live better, longer, and with a higher quality of life. No fluff. No confusion. Just real conversations with people who know what they're talking about. So think of today as your preview… A front-row seat to the kind of insight that could make a real difference in your life, or in the life of someone you care about. Today's episode is all about progress, the kind you can see, feel, and soon… experience. If you've been around Lake Country lately, you've probably noticed it. Construction moving forward. New spaces taking shape. And a growing sense that something exciting is right around the corner. So today, we're bringing you a special episode featuring two conversations, both centered on projects that are helping shape the future of our community in very different ways. First, we'll catch up with Adam Shaefer for an update on Lake Country Village, including the highly anticipated Publix development. This is an exciting project and real progress is happening! We'll talk about what's been completed, what's coming next, and what it all means for growth and everyday convenience here in Putnam County. Then, we shift from construction to completion, as we sit down with Gary Sofen to talk about the transformation of the former Bone Island Grill into the Italian Chophouse on Lake Oconee. The renovations are done, the vision has come to life, and we'll dive into everything from the concept and design to the new waterfront pavilion and boat docks that are sure to make this THE destination on the lake. Two projects. Two perspectives. One community that continues to grow and evolve. So if you're curious about what's being built and what's coming next, this is an episode you won't want to miss! Today's episode is one that might challenge what you think you know about health, wellness… and even aging. A couple of years ago, I sat down with Lisa Tubbs when she first opened IV Wellness Solutions, introducing the Lake Country community to IV therapy and a more proactive approach to feeling your best. Since then, the practice has grown, evolved, and expanded into something even more comprehensive. Now, Lisa is joined by Rachel Sweat, a nurse anesthetist bringing advanced medical esthetic services into the mix, and we're talking about treatments that sound like they belong in the future: microneedling with salmon DNA, regenerative therapies like PRP, hormone optimization, and non-surgical options designed to help people not just look better, but feel better from the inside out. So what's real? What works? And what should people actually understand before walking into a wellness or esthetics clinic? In this conversation, we'll break it all down, what these treatments are, how they work, who they're for, and how the world of wellness is shifting from reactive care to proactive, personalized health. If you've ever been curious about IV therapy, esthetics, or the science behind looking and feeling your best… this is one you're going to want to hear. Some people spend their lives following a single path… and others find a way to turn every season of life into something meaningful. Today's guest is someone who has done exactly that. Amy Pulliam has spent more than 25 years in the classroom shaping young minds, encouraging students, and helping children discover who they are and what they're capable of becoming. But her story doesn't stop there. In many ways, it's just entering a new chapter. Amy is now a children's book author, the creative force behind Mos Kitty & Co., and someone who continues to teach—just in a different way—through stories that inspire imagination, character, and heart. Along the way, she's also earned her doctorate, pursued new personal challenges like completing a half marathon at Disney, and remained grounded in a faith that continues to guide her purpose. This is a conversation about more than education… it's about growth, reinvention, and the courage to keep stepping into what's next. So whether you're an educator, a parent, or someone who believes it's never too late to write a new chapter in your life, I think you're going to find something in Amy's story that resonates. Every community has defining moments—times when people come together with a shared purpose to make life better for everyone who calls that place home. Today's episode is about one of those moments. On March 28th, something new is coming to Lake Country: the Lake Country Community Health Fair at Lake Oconee Academy. It's designed to bring together healthcare providers, wellness experts, community organizations, and residents from across Greensboro, Eatonton, Madison, and beyond—all under one roof with a simple but powerful goal: helping people live healthier lives. My guests today are two familiar voices on the show—Dr. Nick Chronos and Tom Hanscom. Both have spent years working to strengthen our community in different ways, and now they're teaming up to launch what they hope will become an annual tradition focused on health, education, and access to care. Plus, a new voice, that of intern Baylor Edge. This isn't just a walk-through expo. It's a hands-on opportunity for people to receive free health screenings, meet local healthcare professionals, learn about wellness resources, and ask questions that might otherwise go unanswered. In a region that continues to grow and welcome both new retirees and new families every year, events like this play an important role in making sure our community stays informed, connected, and proactive about health. We'll talk about how this idea came together, what people can expect at the Health Fair, and why this event could make a meaningful difference for families across Lake Country. So if you care about living healthier—or helping someone you love do the same—stay tuned and meet the team! Today's episode is a continuation of last week's interview. There are some people who serve their community… and then there are those who seem to live in service to it. Today's guest is one of those rare individuals whose fingerprints are all over the growth, leadership, and direction for decades. From serving in the Georgia House of Representatives… to leading the Greene County Chamber of Commerce… to shaping downtown development, regional planning, and community initiatives, Terry Lawler has been in the room where decisions are made, and more importantly, where they're carried out. But what makes this conversation especially interesting is that Terry isn't just reflecting on the past, he's stepping back into the arena. He's planning to run for County Commission in Greene County, District 1, bringing with him a depth of experience that spans local, regional, and state leadership. So today, we're not just talking about titles or timelines. We're diving into perspective—what he's learned, what's changed, what he believes Greene County is getting right… and where he sees the greatest opportunities ahead. And along the way, we'll get a glimpse of the man behind the résumé, because after this many years in leadership, you tend to pick up a story or two… and a lot of wisdom worth sharing. There are some nights that entertain us. And then there are nights that remind us who we are. Today's episode is about one of those nights. On March 14th, 2026, at Briarpatch Farm in Eatonton, our community will gather for something bigger than a concert… bigger than an auction… bigger than a fundraiser. It's called “Honoring Our Heroes”, an evening dedicated to the men and women who have worn the uniform of this country and carried the weight of our freedom. This event brings together powerful stories, award-winning music, remarkable experiences, and one shared purpose: to stand behind our veterans, especially those who have been wounded in service to this nation. My guest today is James Lakeman, who alongside Mike Rainey and a dedicated team, is helping bring this vision to life. From keynote speaker Mark Nutsch, the real-life inspiration behind 12 Strong, to songwriter Matt Rogers, to wounded warrior Mario Lopez, this evening promises to be both inspiring and unforgettable. But beyond the lineup and logistics, this is a story about why we honor service. Why community matters. And why freedom is never free. So today we'll talk about how this event began, what it takes to build something of this magnitude, and what it means for our community to rally around those who have sacrificed so much. This isn't just a fundraiser. It's a statement of gratitude. And you won't want to miss the story behind it. Today, I'm welcoming back Sean and Amy Maguire, the owners of The Well. The last time they joined us, they were standing on the edge of something big, preparing to open a wellness spa built on intention, restoration, and a belief that taking care of yourself isn't a luxury… it's foundational. Now, the doors have been open. The community has walked through. Lessons have been learned. Adjustments have been made. And a dream has become a living, breathing business. In this conversation, we'll catch up on how "The Well" has evolved, what has resonated most with Lake Oconee, what surprised them, and what they've learned about building something meaningful in a community like ours. We'll also talk about what's next, not just for the business, but for Sean and Amy personally. This episode is about growth, the kind that happens in business, in wellness, and in life. It's about refining a vision, staying patient through challenges, and continuing to build something with purpose. Today's episode is about a life that never stopped answering the call to serve, even after most people would have felt they'd already done more than enough. My guest is Dick Forrester, a man whose life journey spans farming roots in Virginia, military aviation service during the Vietnam era, decades of leadership in the aviation industry, and now a powerful season of hands-on ministry in retirement. Dick's story is one of steady responsibility and quiet leadership, shaped early by hard work, refined through military service, and strengthened by a career that demanded precision, judgment, and accountability. But rather than slowing down in retirement, Dick found himself drawn into a new calling: helping people in their most vulnerable moments through Sheds of Hope, sponsored by Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church. Sheds of Hope is a practical, boots-on-the-ground disaster response effort that provides secure storage sheds to families who've lost homes, belongings, and stability. These sheds become more than structures, they become a first step toward dignity, order, and rebuilding. In this conversation, Dick shares how each chapter of his life prepared him for this work, why faith must be lived as much as it's believed, and what he's learned by showing up, again and again, for people often facing overwhelming loss. We'll also talk about the upcoming Chili Cook-Off fundraiser at Bruzze's Brewery, a community event that helps fuel this important mission. This is a story about purpose that evolves, service that never retires, and hope that shows up with tools in hand. Welcome to today's episode, a continuation from last week's conversations. Today's episode is about one of those roles that quietly keeps everything running, the kind of job most people don't think about… until they really need it. My guest is Trevor Addison, the Clerk of Court for Putnam County, and if you've ever bought property, dealt with a court case, filed legal documents, or tried to navigate the justice system, his office has likely played a role in your life, whether you realized it or not. We're going to pull back the curtain on what the Clerk of Court actually does, why the role is far more complex than most people imagine, and how Trevor found his way into a position built on trust, precision, and public service. We'll also explore the many services his office provides that often go unnoticed, from safeguarding real estate records to supporting judges, attorneys, and everyday citizens during some of life's most stressful moments. This is a conversation about responsibility, leadership, and the human side of government — where accuracy matters, compassion counts, and getting it right is non-negotiable. So if you've ever wondered how local government really works, or who's making sure the system doesn't fall apart, you're going to want to hear this one! This is a continuation of last week's episode with my guest Alan Hardwick. Alan is a man whose life journey has taken him from youth ministry to elite law enforcement, from guiding teenagers searching for direction to protecting one of the most high-profile leaders in the state of Georgia. Alan served with the Georgia State Patrol and was part of Governor Brian Kemp's security detail — a role that demands constant vigilance, calm under pressure, and absolute trust. It's the kind of work where success means nothing happens, and failure is not an option. But long before the badge and the security protocols, Alan was a youth pastor, working with kids who needed guidance, stability, and someone who believed in them. And that chapter of his life didn't disappear when he put on the uniform — it shaped the way he led, protected, and served. Now retired from the State Patrol, Alan has entered yet another chapter, helping leaders understand that safety isn't about fear, it's about preparation, awareness, and responsibility. This conversation weaves together faith, service, leadership, and protection, with stories that are thoughtful, powerful, and occasionally surprising. It's about what it means to stand watch over others… and what that kind of responsibility does to a person over a lifetime. This is a story about purpose, pressure, and protecting what matters most. Today's episode is a continuation of our last episode: a discussion about leadership under pressure, service over time, and what it means to guide a community through both calm waters and storms. My guest is Eric Arena, who served as Putnam County School Superintendent for more than a decade, a period marked by rapid growth, economic uncertainty, and one of the most disruptive events in modern education history: COVID. During Eric's tenure, Putnam County Schools navigated expansion, tough financial realities, evolving expectations, and a pandemic that forced leaders to make high-stakes decisions with incomplete information and no real playbook. Through it all, Eric remained steady, thoughtful, and deeply committed to students, teachers, and the broader community. Now retired from the superintendent's role, though not from education, Eric has stepped into a new chapter as Executive Director of the Charter System Foundation, where he continues supporting innovation and opportunity in public education. This conversation is part reflection, part leadership lesson, and part looking forward, and it offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it truly takes to lead, when everyone is watching… and when everyone has an opinion. Today's show will be a bit different. As I prepare to travel to Turning Point USA Headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, I thought it appropriate to publish this episode; to honor a man who believed deeply in America's promise—and whose life became a call to action. Charlie Kirk: A Legacy That Lives On. Charlie was more than a voice; he was a movement-maker at just 18 years old, when he founded Turning Point USA. Driven by faith, freedom, and the belief that every young person deserves a say in our future, he challenged the status quo. But on September 10, 2025, at what should have been another campus event for change, the unthinkable happened: Charlie was taken from us far too soon. His work, however, did not end that day—it transformed. As we honor Charlie, we'll walk through his beginnings, his beliefs, the lives he touched, the tragedy that shook us all, and the new chapter now being led by his widow, Erika Kirk. Because often when one life ends in sacrifice, the spirit of a mission only grows stronger. Let's begin... Today's episode continues last week's conversation with Jason Blankenship, Vice President of the Better Business Bureau, and we're talking about something that affects everyone — scams. They come by phone, by text, by email, and sometimes even right to your doorstep. And they're getting smarter, slicker, and harder to spot. We'll dive into the newest tricks scammers are using to steal your money and your information, and we'll break down real examples so you'll know exactly what to look out for. Jason will also share practical steps you can take to protect yourself, your family, and even your business from becoming the next target. From fake bank alerts and tech support scams to those “too good to be true” text messages, this conversation will open your eyes and arm you with knowledge you can use right away. Today's episode is all about something we often take for granted, the ability to communicate: to speak, to share, to connect. My guest, Kay Jones, has spent more than 40 years as a speech therapist, helping people of all ages rediscover their voices and their confidence after challenges that made communication difficult. From children learning their first clear words to adults recovering from strokes or injuries, Kay has dedicated her life to reminding people that every voice matters. Now, after four decades of experience in schools, clinics, and hospitals, Kay is opening a new chapter, quite literally, by launching her own private practice right here in our community! We'll talk about her journey, how the field of speech therapy has evolved, and the deep emotional connection between speech and identity. You'll hear stories of transformation, the science behind speech recovery, and why Kay believes that helping someone find their voice is one of the most rewarding callings there is. This conversation is a beautiful reminder that words have power, and with the right help, anyone can find theirs again. Today's show takes us into one of the most unique and inspiring ministries you'll ever hear about, a group that's taking the message of Jesus far beyond the church walls and into the places where people who need Him are! My guest is Josh Willcuts, the founder of Jesus in a Bar, a faith movement and band built on a simple but powerful belief: there's no place Jesus wouldn't go to share His love. From bars to prisons, hospitals to nursing homes, this ministry uses music, story, and compassion to reach people who might never walk through a traditional church door. We'll talk about how Jesus in a Bar began, the powerful moments that have shaped their journey, and their upcoming benefit concert at Briar Patch Farm, an evening of incredible music and unshakable faith that's helping raise funds to expand their mission even further. It's raw, it's real, and it's rooted in something we all need…hope. Whether you're a believer, a seeker, or maybe someone who loves a good story about purpose and courage, this episode will remind you that sometimes the most sacred moments happen in the most unexpected places. Today's episode is one of those stories that reminds you just how powerful friendship and community can be. I'm joined by two incredible women — Patty Jackson and Rachel Borregard, from an inspiring local organization called On Our Own, or simply the OOO's as most of you know them. What started as a small circle of women supporting each other through life's challenges has grown into a thriving network of encouragement, compassion, and shared purpose. The OOO's are proof that when women come together, to listen, to lift each other up, and to lead with heart, remarkable things happen. We'll talk about how the organization began, the lives it's touched, and the ways it continues to make a lasting impact here in our community and beyond. You'll hear about the events, the laughter, the friendships and the deeper mission that ties it all together. Whether you're part of a group like this or have been looking for something that feeds your soul, this episode will remind you that no one should ever truly be “on their own.” So settle in, this conversation is full of heart, hope, and the kind of connection that makes life a little brighter. We continue our discussion from last week with Representative Trey Rhodes. Today's guest is someone who helps shape the laws that shape our lives; both here at home and across the state of Georgia. Representative Trey Rhodes is here to tell us about what happened in the 2025 legislative session under the Gold Dome, and he's joining us to break it all down. From education reforms to economic development, tort reform to healthcare access, this session was packed with major issues that affect every Georgian, and Trey was right in the middle of it! And for everyone in our area wondering about the Highway 44 road widening project, yes, we're talking about that too! Trey gives us the latest updates, timelines, and what it means for growth and traffic here at the lake. Did anyone say roundabouts? And it sounds like we'll all need a little extra dose of patience. In this episode, we'll dig into the wins, the challenges, and the conversations that didn't necessarily make the headlines, but matter deeply to folks right here in our community. We'll also talk about what it means to represent a district like ours, how bipartisan progress still happens, and what he sees coming next for Georgia. Whether you're into politics or just want to better understand how state decisions impact your everyday life, this is a behind-the-scenes conversation you won't want to miss. Continuing from last week, today's episode is all about wellness—from the inside out—and a brand-new spot that's about to change the way we sip, snack, and start our mornings, and afternoons, here in Lake Country. My guest is Margaret Bermudez, a master of nutrition with a passion for helping others feel their best through food, education, and holistic care. She's part of the team at IV Wellness Solutions, where science meets self-care—but today, she's here to share something brand new. Margaret and Lisa Tubbs, are in the final stages of launching Compassion Café, a unique coffee and tea shop with a healthy, organic twist. Think clean ingredients, functional flavors, and a warm, welcoming space where wellness meets community. If you've ever wondered whether your morning latte could actually be good for you—this is the episode for you. We'll talk about how nutrition impacts everything from energy to mood, some surprising truths most people don't know about what they eat, and why she believes coffee culture can be a gateway to better health. So grab your favorite cup and get comfortable—this is a conversation you won't want to miss. You've probably heard the rumors, but you want to know what's REALLY happening at the former Bone Island Grill location... Today on the show, we're welcoming back a familiar voice—and he's bringing some big, exciting news to the Lake Country! You already know Gary Sofen as the owner of the popular Lake Oconee Bistro, a staple in our local dining scene. But now, he's setting his sights on the water—literally. Gary has just purchased the former Bone Island Grill property, a once-beloved boat-up restaurant that's been sitting quiet for years… until now. Today, we'll dive into Gary's bold new vision for reviving and reinventing the space. What kind of restaurant is he bringing to the lakefront? What will the menu look like? And how is he planning to create a destination that's as welcoming to boaters as it is to patrons arriving by car? We'll talk concept, culture, construction—and get a sneak peek at how the two restaurants will be able to work together, while still maintaining their unique vibe. Whether you're a foodie, a lake lover, or just curious about what's coming next to our corner of Georgia, you won't want to miss this one! Today, I'm excited to introduce a guest who brings a unique blend of business acumen, community spirit, and a passion for sports: Corey Schachter. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Corey has called Georgia home for eight years and has lived at the Lake for the last four years. His move to the lake was driven by a desire to "simulate living on vacation" after his family grew unexpectedly to include five young children, the youngest being twins! Professionally, Corey owns and manages an automotive warranty company headquartered just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. Beyond his primary business, Corey has taken on an incredibly unique project here at the lake: he owns and manages the Lake Oconee “Wild Things” baseball team. Inspired by a low-cost, family-friendly baseball experience he witnessed in Buffalo, he sought to bring a similar community activity to Lake Oconee. He acquired the “Wild Things" team in the middle of last season and relocated them to the Lake Oconee area. The team plays its home games at Lake Oconee Academy's baseball field, which boasts a turf field. A unique aspect of their league is that players use wooden bats. Corey emphasizes that the games offer "serious baseball" for young collegiate athletes aspiring to play at higher levels, with scouts attending games and past players having moved on to minor league teams. The team also features a celebrity announcer, "Lake Life Larry" Wax, who brings extra energy and family-friendly antics between innings. Corey is deeply committed to ensuring the team provides a positive experience, both for the players (many of whom are hosted by local families) and for the community, aiming for family-friendly entertainment and engagement. Today, we continue talking with a guest who brings a wealth of knowledge and a fascinating career journey to our conversation: Mark Engel. Mark is originally from Minnesota, though he grew up in Park Forest, a suburb of Chicago, famously developed for World War II military families.... His extensive background in journalism began early, working at radio stations during high school and college. He then transitioned into broadcast news, starting in cable in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, before moving to TV stations in Knoxville and Asheville, North Carolina. Mark's career truly blossomed in Atlanta, where he worked at WAGA (Channel 5) for a dozen years as a reporter and anchor, and later at WSB-TV, ultimately serving as a news director. He was at the forefront of major events, covering the return of American hostages from Iran in 1981, the World's Fair in Knoxville, and even helping secure and cover the Olympics for Atlanta.... Mark was also instrumental in the launch of the Georgia Lottery, designing and producing its live drawing shows. After his time in local news, Mark spent over 12 years at CNN, where he held a critical role on "the row." In this position, he and a small team had the authority to approve scripts from correspondents worldwide, ensuring fairness, balance, and factual accuracy, often dealing with breaking news and intense situations. Upon retiring to the Lake area in 2013, Mark couldn't stay away from journalism for long. He freelanced for the Lake Oconee News for 12 years and now runs "Under the Radar" on Next Door, a vital initiative to inform local citizens about upcoming county meetings and development plans, emphasizing the importance of community engagement. Let's welcome Mark as he shares his insights on the evolving landscape of news, local community issues, and much more! Today we continue our conversation on community and public service with Paul Van Haute. Paul grew up just outside the Philadelphia area, where he attended Villanova University, part of a long family tradition. He later had a career in the military which he describes as "awesome"! He served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, 21st Chemical Company.... He was stationed on a remote, one-square-mile island in the middle of the Pacific, dealing with chemical agents. Paul made 72 jumps during his military career, though his last jump unfortunately resulted in an injury that led to 70 operations! After his military service and a career as a sales engineer, Paul transitioned into public work, earning a Master's in Public Administration from Kennesaw. He even served as mayor of Holly Springs, Georgia, where he focused on improving zoning and addressing community issues, helping the town grow significantly. Since January 2010, Paul has been serving as the County Manager for Putnam County, overseeing 300 employees and working daily for the over 20,000 citizens. Under his leadership, the county has become financially envied by others similar in size, proactively managing infrastructure, like roads, and dealing with several major challenges. He's also been instrumental in exploring some innovative road materials, which promises roads that are "as hard as concrete, if not harder" and can last 20 or more years.... Paul is committed to strong city-county relations, fostering mutual respect and honest discussions. Paul brings a unique blend of experience and dedication to his role, viewing his team as a "second family" focused on the mission of serving the community. We're excited to hear more about his insights and experience.
