Were it not for reporting by Ross Williams at the Georgia Recorder, none of us might've even known a 'Third Way'-backed centrist Democrat 'Ideas Summit' even took place in Atlanta earlier this week. State Senator Jason Esteves - the lone notable Democratic gubernatorial candidate (sorry, Keisha; until you announce 'for sure,' that's how it is ...) along with Senator Elena Parent, Representative Tanya Miller attended. Esteves, in fact, introduced 'Third Way' vice president of policy Jim Kessler, so there's surely some connection to Esteves and 'Third Way.'To that I say "uh oh.""Uh oh" because centrist Democrats have been the force stirring the party drink for a long time now, and frankly, they're the reason the party keeps losing, but they think it's 'woke white progressives' causing the party to stub its toe. No; it's piss-poor messaging and they're not addressing household budget issues that affect middle income America - the issues progressives like Bernie Sanders, AOC, et al, have been addressing even when it was taboo to do so last Biden/Harris re-election cycle. So on today's show, I call "bullsh*t" to the lot of it, and if/when Senator Esteves does come on to tout his gubernatorial campaign, I'm thinking we'll have a spirited discussion about this. With the passing of Pope Francis comes a litany of American and global tributes - Marjorie Taylor Greene's awful tweet notwithstanding. Among them are the thoughts from DignityUSA's executive director Marianne Duddy-Burke, who joined me to opine on his somewhat-progressive papal legacy and provide some insights into where the Catholic Church will go, ideologically, next. ------I've mentioned him as the kind of quality candidate Georgia Democrats could succeed with atop their 2026 ticket, and lo and behold, Senator Jason Esteves made it official: he's running. ------Last week, I spoke with Dustin Baxter at Kuck Baxter Immigration Law about their 'mass action' lawsuit in defense of international students whose visas were suddenly (and surprisingly) revoked. Good news Friday in that a judge issued a temporary restraining order keeping their status intact, pending further hearings later this week. ------Pete Hegseth was a disastrous choice for defense secretary, and that's not just me saying so; former Trump administration Pentagon insiders are, too. The 'DUI hire' fired three top aides, likely in an effort to snuff out any hint of the leaking that he again - again - used the Signal app to share sensitive military secrets in a group chat ... this time with family members in the mix. Was Pete's mom in the loop? NPR is reporting, by the way, that this may have been the final blow and that the White House is now looking to replace him. ------Okay, so even Joe Rogan thinks "disappearing" people to El Salvaodran prisons and skirting due process makes Trump and ICE "monsters." I mean, he still spews (in caricature 'MAGA moron' voice, no less) ignorant and bigoted spew about Latin American immigrants, but still ... oh and this gives me the occasional opportunity to remind everyone that Donald Trump actually allowed in more criminal migrants in his first term than Joe Biden did in his. ------Lastly, by now you've likely heard about Nancy Mace verbally accosting a man for having the audacity - as one of her constituents - to ask when she'll host another town hall. So much to unpack there: she presumed the man was gay and thus should have been happy with her that she voted in support of gay marriage (because gay men are single issue voters, I guess?), is unaware what "Daisy Duke" shorts are or that men's fashion has evolved from the dreaded "cargo shorts" era to five-inch inseams, insinuated the guy was in her face (from 5-6 feet away?) and dropped a litany of f-bombs insisting he get out of her face (as he was already walking away). Need I remind the "lady" about the code of conduct of her alma mater, The Citadel? Something about "honor, duty, and respect, with a focus on ethical behavior and personal responsibility."I mean, at least she was spotted in the skincare aisle. That worn look on her face screams "moisturize and sunscreen, lady!"

Olivier Esteves est professeur des universités, spécialiste du monde anglophone, de l'ethnicité et de l'immigration. Avec Alice Picard et Julien Talpin, il publie La France tu l'aimes, mais tu la quittes, aux éditions du Seuil. Alors que la France est le pays qui compte le plus de musulmans en Europe, l'enquête sociologique d'Olivier Esteves tente d'expliquer ces départs. Parmi les raisons évoquées, 71% évoquent la volonté de moins subir de racisme et de discriminations, celle de vivre sereinement leur religion (64 %). Le droit à l'indifférence mais à celui de progresser professionnellement (41%) aussi, pour ces jeunes souvent très diplômés qui trouvent l'ascenseur social enrayé, bloqué par les discriminations à l'embauche. Cette enquête sociologique s'est appuyée sur un échantillon de plus de 1000 personnes et sur 140 entretiens approfondis. L'ouvrage révèle les effets délétères de l'islamophobie qui, vus d'ailleurs, semblent constituer une exception française. Parents Never Knew. A kindergarten student brought a knife to Dowell Elementary School, raising concerns about communication regarding student safety. The weapon was reported by another student, and the teacher confiscated it, following district and state protocols. However, only the parents of the student involved were informed. The Cobb County Association of Educators criticized the lack of communication, emphasizing the importance of transparency. The school administration and district defended their actions, stating that there was no threat to students and that disciplinary details cannot be made public. The incident has sparked discussions on balancing safety protocols with open communication in schools. STORY 2: Georgia Senate Passes Cobb School Board Map in Party-Line Vote The Georgia Senate passed the redrawn Cobb County Board of Education map proposed by state Sen. Ed Setzler in a party-line vote. The map is a response to a lawsuit claiming racial gerrymandering in the previous map. Setzler defended his map as the result of a thoughtful process, addressing the judge's order. Democrats, led by Sen. Jason Esteves, opposed Setzler's bill, stating it doesn't remedy the identified problems and violates the Voting Rights Act. Esteves criticized the process, suggesting local collaboration would have been better. The map will now head to the House of Representatives for consideration. STORY 3: Birrell Calls Out Current Commission as Unconstitutional Republican Commissioner JoAnn Birrell criticized the Cobb County Commission's attempt to create its own district boundaries, calling it unconstitutional. Earlier this month, Cobb Superior Court Judge Ann Harris ruled against the commission's move, stating it was unconstitutional. The Democratic majority used Georgia's constitutional home rule powers to substitute the state legislature-approved map to keep Democratic Commissioner Jerica Richardson in office. Commissioner Birrell, opposing the move, supported Judge Harris' ruling, stating that the commission's action is void. The county is appealing the decision to the Georgia Supreme Court. The program, running for over 60 years, provides an opportunity for children to hear a large volume of words, contributing to their vocabulary and readiness to read. Research indicates that reading to young children significantly impacts their word exposure, with programs like the Smyrna Library's story time working to close the "million-word gap." The library's independent status, funded by Smyrna taxpayers, allows flexibility in responding to community needs. STORY 5: Marietta in the Middle Launches Coat Drive Marietta in the Middle, a local nonprofit, has initiated a coat drive in response to last week's cold snap. The drive, running until Feb. 9, aims to provide coats to students in need, particularly after learning that some students at Dunleith Elementary School lacked proper outerwear during the frigid temperatures. Collection points include First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, and Wellstar Kennestone Hospital Emergency Room. The organization, which started in October to combat book bans in Marietta City Schools, aims to address various issues in the district through community outreach projects. We'll be back in a moment  Break: DRAKE STORY 6: 48th Annual Superior Plumbing Kennesaw/Big Shanty Festival is April 20-21 The 48th annual Superior Plumbing Kennesaw/Big Shanty Festival, presented by Georgia Grown, is scheduled for April 20-21 in downtown Kennesaw. The festival will showcase over 250 arts and crafts booths, 25 food booths, an entertainment stage, kids activities, and live acoustic music. The Georgia Grown Member Village will feature goods and products from across the state. The festival will kick off with a parade on April 20 at 9:30 a.m., featuring over 2,000 children and various local groups. Attendees can enjoy performances by puppeteer Peter Hart, musician Scott Thompson, and local dance groups. Admission is free, and parking is available nearby. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: CU of GA  STORY 1: Douglasville Man Accused of Shoplifting Over $4K in Apple Products From Target Omari Fonteno, a 20-year-old Douglasville man, is accused of stealing over $4,000 in Apple products from a Target store in Marietta. Fonteno allegedly assisted an unknown individual in stealing the products between November 21 and December 8. The theft involved placing items in lower value boxes or a Target bag without scanning them during checkout. He is charged with theft by shoplifting of items greater than $500. Fonteno was arrested on December 8, booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, and later released on a $3,000 bond. STORY 2: Bridge Over I-75 to Ease Kennesaw Traffic The South Barrett Reliever project in Kennesaw, a $50 million, three-phase initiative, is progressing, with a 450-foot bridge being a significant part of the third phase. The bridge, part of a $43 million segment, spans Interstate 75 and leads to a new roundabout behind the Home Depot on Roberts Road. The overall project aims to reduce traffic on Barrett Parkway by around 20%. The first phase was completed in 2010, the second in 2018, and the current phase is expected to conclude by the end of 2024. The project has received funding from various sources, including Cobb special-purpose local-option sales tax, Atlanta Regional Commission, and the State Roadway and Toll Authority. STORY 3: Marietta Visitors Bureau Seeks Feedback on Perceptions of Marietta The Marietta Visitors Bureau is conducting an online survey until January 5 to gather public feedback on how people perceive the city of Marietta. The survey aims to identify Marietta's strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement in tourism marketing and promotion. The bureau is in the process of rebranding the city's tourism identity and seeks input to match the new brand with the Marietta community's identity. This marks the first time the Marietta Visitors Bureau has conducted such a survey, and the results will serve as a benchmark for Marietta as a destination. State Senators Jason Esteves (D-Atlanta) and Ed Setzler (R-Acworth) expressed their opposing views on vouchers and questioned Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale on the matter. Ragsdale emphasized concerns about vouchers, stating they often fail to cover private school tuition fully and that families targeted for help might lack transportation. Esteves questioned the potential impact on education funding and indirect funding loss for Cobb schools. Setzler argued that only state funds, not local, would be directed to private schools under the proposed voucher system. STORY 5: Marietta Proper Wine Bar Set for Jan. 2 Grand Opening Marietta Proper, a new wine bar and cafe on the Marietta Square, is set to open in 2024. The restaurant, located at the former site of Hamilton Jewelers, is undergoing soft openings in preparation for its public opening on January 2. Marietta Proper offers an eclectic menu inspired by various influences, featuring cocktails, wine, and whiskey. The establishment has a lounge area, electronic wine dispenser, and an art deco design. The soft openings aim to fine-tune the restaurant's offerings and service. Marietta Proper is expected to contribute to the upscale entertainment district on the Marietta Square.
