STORY 2: Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Daniela Esteves is coming back to Gwinnett, and this time, she’s taking the reins as complex general manager of the Lawrenceville Arts Center. Most recently with the Kennedy Center in D.C., Esteves has done it all—programming, marketing, event management, you name it. She even spent a couple of years at Gas South District in Duluth before heading north. Lawrenceville’s Arts Center isn’t just a venue—it’s a hub for connection and culture. And with Esteves at the helm, it’s poised to thrive. STORY 3: Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community Dick Goodman wore many hats in his 83 years—city councilman, PR pro, photographer, library advocate, and the first chair of Suwanee’s Public Art Commission. But more than titles, he was a storyteller, a community builder, and a man who poured his heart into everything he touched. Goodman passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy that’s woven into the fabric of Suwanee. After moving to Suwanee in 2006, it didn’t take long for him to dive in. By 2009, he was on the City Council, later chairing the Gwinnett Library Board for eight years. Today, a room at the Suwanee library bears his name—a fitting tribute for someone who championed the power of stories. Even in his final hours, Goodman was at a Suwanee planning meeting, still giving back. His family is now raising funds to make the “Novel Idea” sculpture—a granite bench shaped like books—a permanent part of the library he loved so much. Friday afternoon in Atlanta became chaotic, with ambulances and emergency vehicles all screaming and racing their way to the campus of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Those personnel from multiple jurisdictions arriving to the scene of a lone, mentally unstable gunman carrying a grudge triggered by vaccine skepticism - the kind Trump's Health & Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been stoking for a decade or more. On that note, current and former CDC staffers didn't hold back with their assessment of said rhetoric. Nos 50 anos da independência de Cabo Verde, a RFI publica várias reportagens sobre o tema. Neste oitavo episódio, vamos até ao Museu - Campo de Concentraçao do Tarrafal, na ilha de Santiago, guiados pelos antigos presos políticos Gil Querido Varela e António Pedro da Rosa.  Nesta viagem a um passado não muito distante, Gil Querido Varela, 90 anos, e António Pedro da Rosa, 76 anos, levam-nos ao Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal, convertido em museu com dez salas de exposição. Os dois fazem parte dos 20 “nomes da liberdade” inscritos na sala dos presos cabo-verdianos, onde também estão expostas as suas fotografias. “Ao chegar recordamos o que tínhamos passado por aqui. E, às vezes, também procuramos esquecer o que passámos por aqui”, começa por dizer António Pedro da Rosa à chegada ao Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal. Gil Querido Varela completa: “O passado volta, lembro-me do primeiro dia em que aqui cheguei. Até hoje. Lembro-me também do dia 1 de Maio de 74, quando regressei e estavam saindo todos.” A viagem começa na Praia, com António Pedro da Rosa, e pelo caminho vamos buscar o seu amigo até chegarmos à aldeia de Chão Bom, no Tarrafal. Uma hora de carro a percorrer a ilha de Santiago, em Cabo Verde, para chegar ao local que ficou conhecido como “campo da morte lenta”, numa primeira fase, entre 1936 e 1954, quando 32 opositores políticos à ditadura ali morreram perante condições tenebrosas para os que ali foram desterrados de Portugal. Sobre essa altura, Gil Querido Varela cita um preso: “Aqui no campo não se vive, aguarda-se a morte. Lenta, mas certa.” Quando Gil e António aqui chegaram, o campo já tinha mudado de nome. O ditador português, António de Oliveira Salazar, tinha sido obrigado a desactivar a colónia penal por pressão da comunidade internacional, alertada pelos relatos do tratamento desumano dado aos presos e pelas condições do espaço. Com o início das lutas pela independência, o campo reabre, em 1962, para prender anticolonialistas de Angola, Guiné-Bissau e Cabo Verde. Passara a ser “Campo de Trabalho de Chão Bom”. Mas de bom pouco havia a não ser os laços que os presos ali criaram e a própria reinvenção da vida. Até 1974, ali estiveram presos 20 cabo-verdianos, 106 angolanos e 100 guineenses. Quatro morreram lá dentro. Gil Querido Varela, conhecido por "Kid Varela", interessou-se pela política desde pequeno, durante uma das grandes fomes de Cabo Verde, em 1947. “Quem viu aquela fome, não podia ficar indiferente”, conta. Em 1965, concorre a um lugar de professor, mas não consegue o emprego por ter uma classificação negativa da polícia política. Nesse ano, adere ao PAIGC num grupo coordenado por Felisberto Vieira Lopes. Junta-se, entretanto, ao grupo de Fernando Tavares, “Toco”, e foi detido depois dele, em 1968, e no mesmo dia que outros membros desse grupo, incluindo o seu parente José Maria Ferreira Querido. Primeiro foi interrogado e torturado na polícia, no Plateau, a seguir foi transferido para a Cadeia Civil da Praia e entrou no Tarrafal em Abril de 1970 com “Toco” e José Querido. Os três foram logo atirados para as celas disciplinares, na obscuridade, e o director da prisão, Eduardo Fontes, conhecido como “Dadinho”, disse-lhe que “escuridão era bom para a vista”. Gil Querido Varela e os seus companheiros eram acusados de “crime contra a segurança interior e exterior do Estado”, nomeadamente por suspeição de estarem a preparar um possível desembarque de elementos de Amílcar Cabral em Cabo Verde. Foram enviados para julgamento em São Vicente, em Outubro, sendo absolvidos por falta de provas e saindo em liberdade a 9 de Janeiro de 1971. Este foi o último julgamento de presos do Tarrafal. “Eles não tinham provas porque não trabalhávamos com papéis”, acrescenta, em referência aos tempos da luta clandestina. António Pedro da Rosa entrou no Tarrafal sem saber por quanto tempo ficaria preso. Ele e vários outros nacionalistas foram detidos no caso Pérola do Oceano, uma operação planeada pela polícia política portuguesa para prender militantes e responsáveis do PAIGC. Um indivíduo tinha fingido ser um elemento do PAIGC vindo da Guiné e convenceu vários militantes de Santa Catarina, em Santiago, que se iria desviar um barco para se juntarem à luta armada na Guiné. No dia da tomada do barco, a 20 de Agosto, António e vários membros do PAIGC são presos, levados para a cidade da Praia, interrogados e torturados. Durante sete meses estiveram às mãos da PIDE e dos seus interrogatórios nocturnos. António Pedro da Rosa foi para o Tarrafal em Fevereiro  de 1971 e de lá só saiu três anos depois, a 1 de Maio de 1974.  “Veio um senhor chamado José Reis Borges e ele convidou-nos para assaltar o Pérola do Oceano para irmos para o Senegal e, depois, íamos entrar nas fileiras do partido para uma luta da independência na Guiné. Foi assim que viemos parar aqui. Mas o José não era do PAIGC, ele simplesmente veio a mando do próprio Governo português para detectar as pessoas que trabalhavam na clandestinidade pela luta da independência”, lembra. Com a chegada dos presos ligados ao caso do "Pérola do Oceano", o primeiro grupo de cabo-verdianos que lá estava organiza-se para os apoiar nos estudos. As aulas funcionavam na sala comum onde estavam todos os cabo-verdianos. Só tinham direito a sair meia hora de manhã e meia hora à tarde. António Pedro da Rosa conheceu aí referências da luta anticolonial como Lineu Miranda, Luís Fonseca, Carlos Tavares e Jaime Schofield que se ocuparam das aulas. No Tarrafal estudava-se e a luta continuava. Os presos políticos cabo-verdianos aliciaram secretamente para a causa anti-colonialista dois guardas também cabo-verdianos através dos quais conseguiram fazer entrar familiares que lhes passavam informações, mas também um receptor de rádio portátil. Um desses guardas, sobrinho de Gil Querido Varela, ensinou-os até a manejar armas. As escondidas, claro está. “Ele é que nos deu a arma. Ele tirou a munição e entregou-nos a pistola aqui dentro da célula e disse: ‘Quem sabe manejar, ensina os que não sabem.' Assim é que quem não sabia manejar a pistola aprendeu nesta circunstância. Ele trazia consigo um cão que o ajudava se visse o director”, conta António. Gil Querido Varela pensa que foi esse guarda que teria levado o aparelho de rádio para a prisão, o que ajudava a estar a par dos avanços da luta armada na Guiné. Os dois amigos continuam a visita guiada à prisão, como guardiões de um tempo que não querem que seja silenciado. Vamos aos diferentes espaços e vemos a “Holandinha”, uma cela de castigo, minúscula, praticamente sem luz, sem espaço para deitar, em que António tem de baixar a cabeça para estar de pé lá dentro. Esta era a herdeira da ‘frigideira' ou ‘frigorifico', a cela que na primeira fase do campo estava cruelmente exposta ao sol no verão e ao frio no inverno.  A “Holandinha” estava construída dentro da arrecadação anexa à cozinha e era uma estrutura de betão dentro de uma sala. “Era só água para beber, uma lata para defecar e fazia tudo aqui, porta fechada. Davam pão e água uma semana ou conforme o castigo. Se fossem três dias, era três dias a pão e água. Recebia uma lata de cinco litros de água, punham aqui”, acrescenta António, sublinhando que nem ele nem o seu camarada tiveram a “holandinha” como castigo. Porém, por se ter recusado a comer pão azedo, uma vez,  ficou sem poder ter visitas, recorda. Outra das violências mais difíceis era a fome e a subalimentação. O 25 de Abril só chegou ao Tarrafal a 1 de Maio de 1974, quando uma multidão foi ao campo exigir a libertação de todos os presos políticos.  La fora, estava Gil Querido Varela, e lá dentro, António Pedro da Rosa. Os portões abriram-se e os presos foram recebidos em delírio e muitos seguiram em cortejo e festa até à cidade da Praia, a uns 70 quilómetros do Tarrafal, na ponta sul da ilha. “Foi um dia muito feliz”, recorda Gil Varela, enquanto António Pedro da Rosa recorda “a grande emoção” que sentiu. Porém, em Dezembro de 1974, as portas voltaram a fechar-se. No interior ficavam 70 cidadãos cabo-verdianos, adversários do PAIGC e afectos na sua maioria à UDC e à UPICV, formações que não teriam lugar no regime de partido único. Na altura, ainda eram as autoridades portuguesas quem mandava, justificam personalidades do PAIGC. Libertados a pouco e pouco, os últimos presos foram abrangidos por uma amnistia decretada aquando da independência. O campo viria a ser extinto "para sempre" em 19 de Julho de 1975, por uma das primeiras leis de Cabo Verde. No futuro, o Museu do Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal quer ser Património da Humanidade da UNESCO como memória de um dos “cárceres do Império” que tentou condenar ao esquecimento as vozes e as vidas dos resistentes ao colonial-fascismo. A candidatura está a ser trabalhada por Cabo Verde, Portugal, Angola e Guiné-Bissau. No total, entre 1936 e 1974, aqui estiveram encarcerados, na sua maioria sem julgamento, um total de 588 homens, de acordo com o livro “Tarrafal - Campo de Concentração - Presos Políticos e Sociais” de Alfredo Caldeira e João Esteves.   Se quiser aprofundar este assunto, pode ouvir aqui a entrevista integral aos nossos dois convidados.

Were it not for reporting by Ross Williams at the Georgia Recorder, none of us might've even known a 'Third Way'-backed centrist Democrat 'Ideas Summit' even took place in Atlanta earlier this week. State Senator Jason Esteves - the lone notable Democratic gubernatorial candidate (sorry, Keisha; until you announce 'for sure,' that's how it is ...) along with Senator Elena Parent, Representative Tanya Miller attended. Esteves, in fact, introduced 'Third Way' vice president of policy Jim Kessler, so there's surely some connection to Esteves and 'Third Way.'To that I say "uh oh.""Uh oh" because centrist Democrats have been the force stirring the party drink for a long time now, and frankly, they're the reason the party keeps losing, but they think it's 'woke white progressives' causing the party to stub its toe. No; it's piss-poor messaging and they're not addressing household budget issues that affect middle income America - the issues progressives like Bernie Sanders, AOC, et al, have been addressing even when it was taboo to do so last Biden/Harris re-election cycle. So on today's show, I call "bullsh*t" to the lot of it, and if/when Senator Esteves does come on to tout his gubernatorial campaign, I'm thinking we'll have a spirited discussion about this. With the passing of Pope Francis comes a litany of American and global tributes - Marjorie Taylor Greene's awful tweet notwithstanding. Among them are the thoughts from DignityUSA's executive director Marianne Duddy-Burke, who joined me to opine on his somewhat-progressive papal legacy and provide some insights into where the Catholic Church will go, ideologically, next. ------I've mentioned him as the kind of quality candidate Georgia Democrats could succeed with atop their 2026 ticket, and lo and behold, Senator Jason Esteves made it official: he's running. ------Last week, I spoke with Dustin Baxter at Kuck Baxter Immigration Law about their 'mass action' lawsuit in defense of international students whose visas were suddenly (and surprisingly) revoked. Good news Friday in that a judge issued a temporary restraining order keeping their status intact, pending further hearings later this week. ------Pete Hegseth was a disastrous choice for defense secretary, and that's not just me saying so; former Trump administration Pentagon insiders are, too. So much to unpack there: she presumed the man was gay and thus should have been happy with her that she voted in support of gay marriage (because gay men are single issue voters, I guess?), is unaware what "Daisy Duke" shorts are or that men's fashion has evolved from the dreaded "cargo shorts" era to five-inch inseams, insinuated the guy was in her face (from 5-6 feet away?) and dropped a litany of f-bombs insisting he get out of her face (as he was already walking away). Need I remind the "lady" about the code of conduct of her alma mater, The Citadel? Something about "honor, duty, and respect, with a focus on ethical behavior and personal responsibility."I mean, at least she was spotted in the skincare aisle. That worn look on her face screams "moisturize and sunscreen, lady!"

Olivier Esteves est professeur des universités, spécialiste du monde anglophone, de l'ethnicité et de l'immigration. Avec Alice Picard et Julien Talpin, il publie La France tu l'aimes, mais tu la quittes, aux éditions du Seuil. Alors que la France est le pays qui compte le plus de musulmans en Europe, l'enquête sociologique d'Olivier Esteves tente d'expliquer ces départs. Parmi les raisons évoquées, 71% évoquent la volonté de moins subir de racisme et de discriminations, celle de vivre sereinement leur religion (64 %). Le droit à l'indifférence mais à celui de progresser professionnellement (41%) aussi, pour ces jeunes souvent très diplômés qui trouvent l'ascenseur social enrayé, bloqué par les discriminations à l'embauche. Cette enquête sociologique s'est appuyée sur un échantillon de plus de 1000 personnes et sur 140 entretiens approfondis. L'ouvrage révèle les effets délétères de l'islamophobie qui, vus d'ailleurs, semblent constituer une exception française. Last year alone, 6.2 million children were reached through "Christmas Party Clubs" facilitated by hundreds of thousands of teachers throughout the world with a burden for our kids. CEF was founded in 1937 and is the largest evangelistic ministry to children in the world. With all the negative impact on them from social media and school propaganda, focusing on the Light of the World at this time of year is refreshing and much needed.
