In a 50-page ruling, U.S. District Judge J.P. Boulee said the state had a “compelling interest” in reducing voter confusion and boosting confidence in elections. The law, passed in 2021 after Joe Biden flipped Georgia blue in 2020, also limits drop boxes, requires ID for absentee voting, and bans giving food or water to voters in line. Voting rights groups aren’t backing down, calling the decision a blow to free speech. CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence. The founder of Fun City Editions, Jonathan Hertzberg, joins the podcast from New York City to discuss the boutique video label and their latest blu-ray release, 1983's Deep in the Heart, aka Handgun, directed by Ken Loach's longtime English producer Tony Garnett. Deep in the Heart, a brutal portrayal of American gun culture as seen from an outsider's perspective, stars the undersung actress Karen Young in her screen debut as a Boston schoolteacher working in Dallas who is groomed and then sexually assaulted by a well-liked local attorney and antique gun collector. She gets nowhere trying to get the police and the church to support her quest for justice, but gets all the help she needs from the local gun club, and transformed by the culture and her experience, plans her revenge. The film was bought by Warner Bros. not to release the film properly, but to keep it from interfering with the commercial prospects of their upcoming Clint Eastwood release with a similar theme, Sudden Impact. Deep in the Heart is the kind of film this label specializes in: films that have for various reasons been forgotten in the modern age but deserve to be restored, reissued and rediscovered. Jonathan gives us insight into the process and the challenges of locating and reviving these catalogue titles, and how Deep in the Heart still speaks to contemporary American concerns over 40 years later. Meet Jonathan Hertzberg. After years of working for companies like IFC Films and Kino-Lorber, he decided to start Fun City Editions — a boutique home video label that specializes in re-issuing overlooked movies from the ‘70s and ‘80s on a stellar roster of collectible Blu-Ray releases. It's a totally DIY operation that he runs out of his home in New York (think of Jon as the Gabe of forgotten cinema) — and it's attracted the attention of hardcore cinephiles everywhere. Fun City's newest offering is the 1971 gem T.R. BASKIN — filmed in Chicago and starring Candice Bergen — and it just so happens that Ben and Scott recorded the audio commentary on the disc. So we had Jon on the show to ask him what he was thinking. And while he was here, we asked him to help us pick the best Chicago movies on a new FunCityChicago installment of WHAT'S THE BEST?!? The answers may surprise you. At least Gabe's will.

As we commemorate the opening of my coffee shop in June 2007, Andreas and I discuss the story of how I developed my approach to sourcing green coffee and the evolution towards roasting lighter, flavourful profiles that we have become know for. We also reflect on the digital revolution and how the internet has become the most significant innovation in the coffee landscape over recent decades, reshaping everything from consumer engagement to educational outreach. Lastly, we touch on the meticulous journey of enhancing the quality of our coffee, a quest that has been at the heart of everything we do. Music by my uncle Jens Wendelboe.

In this special episode, I celebrate my 25th year of working in the coffee industry. Joining me for this reflective chat is my good friend Andreas Hertzberg, the Co-founder of Nordic Approach and the chairman of our company's board. We retrace our steps to the early days at Stockfleth's and Solberg & Hansen, reminiscing about our shared journey – a journey filled with mutual learning, inspiration, discovery and being part of the development of modern coffee culture in Norway. I dive deep into my inaugural competition, and together, Andreas and I discuss why the 2002 World Barista Championship holds such a pivotal place in my professional journey. We explore the 'Cup of Excellence' and its impact on coffee pricing dynamics. The importance of transparency, the moral obligation of paying our producers a commendable price, and how the ‘Cup of Excellence' has influenced these practices. We then take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, discussing the historical significance of the Nordic Barista Cup and the Nordic Roaster forum. Sit back and join us in celebrating this silver milestone in the realm of coffee. Cheers to a quarter of a century and hopefully many more to come! Music by my uncle Jens Wendelboe.
