NATIONAL CEREBRAL PALSY AWARENESS MONTH National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month in March brings attention to a group of disorders usually diagnosed in early childhood. There are different forms of cerebral palsy (CP). A physician determines the kind of movement disorder based on the extent, type, and location of the child's abnormalities. The disability can occur during development in the womb, but it can also occur during birth. Diagnosis may be delayed as parents begin to notice missed milestones. CP is a life-long condition. Children and adults with CP may require a range of care. While there is no cure, there are many therapies and adaptive strategies to support someone with CP throughout their life. Speech devices make it possible for someone with CP to speak independently. Electric wheelchairs provide mobility. However, accessibility is still an issue in some areas of the country. Through advocacy, research, and education improved awareness breaks down the barriers many with CP face. HOW TO OBSERVE Wear green in support of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month. Green represents new growth and inspires a renewed life. Learn more about CP or donate. Visit cerebralpalsynewstoday.com to learn more. I’m Julie, mom to two teen boys, partner to my hubby Bill, author of my award-winning memoir, Nothing Short of Joy, an inspirational speaker, creative living coach, artist and life-long student of personal growth. In 2005 when I went to sign my son up for kindergarten, I was overwhelmed by the rules and underwhelmed by the love. The reality of giving up our previously unfettered life to the system was crushing. So we took the leap. Funny thing – the difficulties in being born a dwarf prepared me, in essence, to live and flourish outside the lines. Unschooling has inspired my family to unfollow the current educational Belief Systems (BS) and instead follow our own inner truth and the enthusiasm, wisdom and wonder within our kids. We’re learning how to use challenges as a springboard to spirit, to live a more wholehearted life and to create a joyful world we feel proud to call home. You can find me at www.nothingshortofjoy.com Karin Harvey-Olson Karin Harvey-Olson is a homeschooling/unschooling mother of 4 children. She works part time as a facilitator for a youth council on disability rights and special healthcare needs. In addition to that Karin and her family provide care for a deaf young adult who lives with them. She is also a certified leader for Attachment Parenting International, and a certified Baby-Wearing instructor. When not working or spending time with her family, Karin pursues her many passions, including Music, Theater, Attachment parenting, homesteading, natural family living, and all things Disney! “Lucky” to have cerebral palsy? That’s what Zach Anner says in what is unexpectedly our funniest podcast episode yet! Most people work all their lives to become comfortable asking for help and showing the world their true selves, weakness and all. Zach Anner skipped all that. Using what he’s learned he created and stars in his own YouTube show “Workout Wednesdays,” in which he shows how spectacularly he can fail and shares what he calls “inspirational jokes.” It’s disarming, inspirational, genuine and really funny! He has parlayed his compelling voice into a memoir, If at Birth You Don’t Succeed, and as a writer on an ABC sitcom “Speechless.” Anner may fail at many things, but he is masterful at being himself. Lessons: 1. A visible disability can be a gift in that it’s a route to greater authenticity.
 2. With the right perspective, terrible experiences can be transformed into great stories.
 3. Failure blazes an alternative route to success.
