This is an Australian golf podcast about Australian golf courses, taking listeners on a dream lap of every golf course worth considering for a Down Under bucket list golf visit. We answer the questions that will help you make your dream Aussie golf trip a reality. No Fedex Cup updates, no equipment reviews, no technology debate, no betting-agency-sponsored tipping segment: Just the how, what, when and where of playing great golf in Australia, with the occasional sacred cow sacrificed in the name of frank discussion, and lessons from the mistakes we made along the way, so you don’t have to.

We could have taken the easy way out and made this two episodes to chip away at our goal of 26 for the year, but instead here's two and a half hours of listening spanning four topics. We open with a chat about sanity prevailing at Sandringham with the men's and women's Aussie Opens to be contested separately again from 2025 after a failed three-year experiment co-sanctioning the two. Where to for both tournaments after so much damage was done to their standing? The main event is an hour-long deep dive on Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne, which has experienced an absolute renaissance thanks to a full course rebuild by Brian Slawnik. Scott and Matt were both crestfallen by what had become of Commo before the facelift and could not be more boyant about the club's future now with the course brought back to its best. If you want even more Commo content, head back to Ep 55, and immediate reaction which we recorded just an hour or so after throwing our clubs in the boot after our round. And on top of that we have a chat with Eric from The Fliers Club, one of the many new-millennium golf societies that has brought passionate golfers together, and in this case on a bucket list trip to the great courses of Australia. And finally, we've enjoyed talking golf balls so much with Dean Klatt from Seed since he came on board as a sponsor of the pod that we asked him to come for a chat on air about how and why he founded Seed, how you even go about designing your own golf balls, the work that's already underway at Seed to prepare for the coming rollback, and more.Seed Golf has provided an introductory 20% off for listeners to Australian Golf Passport.  Head to https://seedgolf.com.au/and enter AGP at checkout to get your hands on some premium golf balls at a super low price point.  Thanks so much to Dean and all at Seed. After having first visited the town of Bridport back in 2004 for a sneak preview round on Barnbougle Dunes, Matt recently made his first trip back there in more than four and a half years, and recalls the experience of several days playing over Lost Farm, Bougle Run and Barnbougle Dunes.   This episode starts with a reasonably lengthy recap of recent events on the local golf scene – taking the first twenty minutes or so – feel free to hit fast forward if you don't wish to mull over topics like the Asia Pacific Amateur recently staged at Royal Melbourne, the issues pertaining to courses and local government at Oakleigh and Moore Park, the World Top 100 ratings kerfuffle involving Cape Wickham, and the upcoming Australian Open golf tournament at The Lakes and The Australian.   Before launching in to the minutiae of golf at Barnbougle (turf, routing, bunker sand, wind and the social elements of a stay at this idyllic location) we proudly announce the support of Burnley Brewing.  We could not be more chuffed to welcome such a sensational partner and supporter of the pod. Go check out their range on insta (@burnleybrewing), online at www.burnleybrewing.com.au and IRL at 648 Bridge Road Richmond.   And keep your eyes open for some prizes for listeners which will be up for grabs in the next little while.   The episode stretches on, covering the highlights of all the courses at Barnbougle, the holes on Bougle Run, and so much more. Greensites, feeder slopes, BD v LF, 18a and more. It's perfectly times to last the duration of the trip from Launceston airport terminal to the front gate of Barny - should you be down that way soon!   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and on Twitter (@AusGolfPassport). The New South Wales Premier Chris Minns yesterday announced that the busy and popular public golf course at Moore Park will be carved up to create more free-form parkland, at the expense of golf holes. It seems like golf is paying the price on the back end of unfettered urban development on the edge of Centennial Park and Moore Park.  As the population of Zetland and surrounding streets rises, the absence of sufficient green space allowance within that development footprint is becoming more obvious. High density residential development during the tenure of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and previous NSW premier Bob Carr now sees current day politicians reach into the golf course to ameliorate the absence of green space allowance within the suburban development footprint. Mike Clayton joins us to discuss the issue, and how similar themes are playing out in other states of Australia.  Mike and Scott propose several possible outcomes for the golf course.  We also urge all those who love golf to engage with the impending public comment period regarding the Moore Park precinct, and the fate of the golf course.   As discussed in this episode – several other podcasts of interest -   State of the Game Episode #128 with Dr Josh Ralston - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/sog-128-digging-deeper-on-saudi-arabia-with-dr-joshua/id497208674?i=1000631324629   The Good-Good Golf Podcast Episode #162 with Karen Lunn of the Australian Golf Industry Council on what golf gives back to the community - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-good-good-golf-podcast/id1480970735?i=1000631821147   And a link to contribute submissions regarding the fate of Oakleigh golf course in Melbourne, where Sandy Jamieson is fighting local council who seek to re-purpose the small parcel of land on which the course current serves a diverse and sizeable portion of the local community - https://www.monash.vic.gov.au/About-Us/News/Monash-calls-for-feedback-to-shape-future-planning-of-Oakleigh-Golf-Course   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and on Twitter (@AusGolfPassport). One of Australia's finest layout, and one that is often over-looked by locals and overseas visitors alike.  We've been looking forward to covering East, and hope that you enjoy the discussion.  This episode kicks off with a brief summary of the experience at the Marvel Stadium Golf event in Melbourne, and the imminent opening of the underground carpark at Royal Melbourne are briefly discussed before launching into the main fare.   Matt provides a little detail on the origins of the East course, and the work of Alex Russell both on completing the West, and designing and building the East.  Two great images that flesh out the origins of the course, and provide an example of the early form of one or two holes in particular.  The nature of the land on which the course sits is discussed, and how that influences the design of the course, providing a layout of contrasting character to the West next door.   There's an 18 hole match play exercise that Scott conducts where East and West face off.  Other issues including the potential for an East hole to be the best par three on the entire complex.  The story of Gary Player's amazing 1963 Australian Open, won over the East course amazes Scott.  The highlights of the East course are covered, along with one or two perceived lower moments. With a flurry of activity on the local golf scene, and one great question accidentally omitted from the recent mailbag episode, we call an emergency pod, and spend longer than we thought we would discussing the events of the week. First up is the topic that has been running hot on the local rumor mill - the alleged misappropriation of funds and assets from a prominent Victorian golf club.  Scott reached out to Victoria Police and the Australian PGA, and legal issues permitting, we share what we are able on this front.   The impending tweaks to three of the back nine holes on Port Fairy are discussed, pursuant to a recent Victorian state government finding regarding the Club's boundary.   The National's insta poll on their ‘Dream 18' is fodder for Scott, who comes in off the long run over the selection of Old's 3rd hole above those from Gunnamatta and Moonah.  This leads into a broader discussion of Old and the other selections on the fantasy layout.   Lastly – we spend a good chunk of time addressing Shane Derby's question on the best short 3s, short 4s and short 5s in Australia.  Sure to provoke some strong listener reaction, Scot & Matt make their nominations, and hopefully haven't made any glaring omissions!   Reminder about Lloyd Cole's upcoming performances in Australia – https://www.ticketmaster.com.au/lloyd-cole-tickets/artist/734789   Shane Derby's Firm & Fast Golf Podcast – https://firmandfastgolfpodcast.fireside.fm   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and on Twitter (@AusGolfPassport). Registration details can be found via this link  - https://www.golfgenius.com/register?league_id=9594741941925357895   Discussion makes a brief turn into the impending course work by Gil Hanse at Royal Sydney Golf Club, and the potential of the site.  Some points can be taken from Los Angeles Country Club's North course, recent venue for the US Open, given that it too was a site of extensive work by Hanse & co. The notion of some of those characters at LACC being instilled within Royal Sydney's course is an appealing thought.   The bulk of the episode is devoted to The Lakes, one of the finest layouts in Sydney. Our episode covers the all bases from the early days, dating back to 1928 and the original course of Eric Apperly and Tom Howard, the freeway intrusion and necessary reworking by Von Hagge and Devlin in the late 1960s, to the current day version of the course, wonderfully reworked by Mike Clayton & colleagues.  Scott and Matt consider the strengths and character of the course, touching on a range of topics from grassing, pronounced green contours, reachable par 5s, and par 3 holes concluding each nine.  The course's standout holes and storied tournament history are also points of discussion. We move to Ellerston, and experiences with Kerry Packer, as well as Bob's take on trees in the fairway. Newcastle comes in for some chat, with one or two possible shortcomings, and the proposed changes, which will hold interest for many of our regular listeners. We move on to the topic of a little cultural cringe apparent within the upper echelons of Australian golf clubs when it comes to engaging local architectural firms, before devoting time to some of Bob's favourite holes among the many he's designed.  The episode draws to a close with talk on National Moonah, New South Wales, and topics dear to Bob's heart – Barossa Shiraz and Machrie Golf Links.  Thanks to Bob and his design firm colleague Scott Champion, for their time and assistance in preparing this edition of AGP Podcast – we really appreciate it.   For those thinking of making the trip to the Isle of Jura – check Ardfin out here – https://www.ardfin.com/   For even more detail on his work, visit Bob Harrison Design's website here – https://harrisongolf.com.au/index.php   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and on Twitter (@AusGolfPassport). In this episode we drive two hours north of Sydney – to the memorable and enjoyable Newcastle golf club. A wide-ranging discussion addresses the character of the course, the seaside location, and the topography on which Newcastle sits. The design prowess of Eric Apperly is also noted, as well as the similarity between parts of the course at Stockton, and Apperly's work at New South Wales GC. The possible changes to Newcastle are also discussed, and these are fleshed out further in the next episode of Australian Golf Passport – an interview with Bob Harrison.   Later in this episode, Scott provides a thorough guide to golf in the region surrounding Newcastle, giving his views on golf in the Hunter Valley and elsewhere.  Some of the attractions of the region are covered too. The merits of the course at Newcastle, especially in relation to metropolitan Sydney courses, are also considered. Newcastle is a course unlike any other – possessing a uniquely Australian charm, an understated elegance, and oodles of design quality and practicality.   Those wanting to visit Newcastle for a game can start the ball rolling by clicking here - https://www.newcastlegolfclub.com.au/cms/play/public-bookings/   Background on the course from Ran Morrissett of golfclubatlas fame is provided here - https://golfclubatlas.com/countries/newcastle000110/   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and on Twitter (@AusGolfPassport). On the eve of The Masters and the Easter holidays, we publish our longest episode yet. Over 100 minutes of discussion devoted to answering two dozen or so listener questions.  We start by briefly addressing news of the week – the Aus PGA Tour event over the Moonah course at The National, then move to ponder Australia's answer to Augusta National.   Listener questions touch on a range of topics including access to private courses, best renovation work and greenfield site work in Australia in the last 20 years, and a few esoteric ones too! This was great fun to record and we hope you indulge us with the long and unedited episode. Perhaps suited to a long session mowing the lawn, or a long drive over the Easter weekend… Thanks to all who submitted a question and apologies to any we missed.   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and have individually attributed to their owners. There's the usual supporting chat on Twitter (@ausgolfpassport).
