Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Saturday, Feb. 17   #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Spring ramp festivals are drawing more attention than ever, thanks to a renewed interest in West Virginia and Appalachia, says the publisher of West Virginia Explorer Magazine. David Sibray says ramp festivals witnessed a leap in attendance in 2023 and he's expecting the number to grow due to increased interest in the state as a destination for vacations and residency. In January 2024, National Geographic named whitewater rafting in the New River Gorge in West Virginia among its “Best of the World” Top 20 Travel Experiences. This designation follows a series of recent significant announcements in other high-profile travel publications. A seasonal staple of Appalachian cuisine, ramps or rampion, a wild leek native to eastern North America, are among the first edible plants to appear in the mountains in spring. WV Explorer's Ramp Dinners and Festivals guide will be updated soon with 2024 dates. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/02/06/spring-ramp-festivals-west-virginia-david-sibray/    #2 – From WMYW –  In the latest episode of the Daily304's “What Makes You Wonderful” podcast, we climb into the intriguing world of geological wonders with special guest David Sibray, publisher and editor-in-chief of West Virginia Explorer Magazine.  This week's spotlight shines on Castle Rock, nestled in the quaint town of Pineville, West Virginia. While other geological formations may steal the limelight, Castle Rock emerges as a captivating underdog, ready for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. With a passion for uncovering the lesser-known treasures of the region, David Sibray offers invaluable insights into the unique charm of Castle Rock. Sibray says it stands as a testament to the beauty and storied history. Listen now: https://daily304.libsyn.com/wmyw-unveils-castle-rocks-charm-with-david-sibray?es_id=5656116a01   #3 – From WBOY-TV –  Most West Virginians know that Hurricane is pronounced HUR-uh-kun and Canaan is pronounced kuh-NANE, but here are a few places in West Virginia that unless you live there, you will probably say wrong the first try. 12 News referenced the book “A Guide to Pronunciation of Place Names in West Virginia” for this story, which was published by West Virginia University in 1981. If you travel to Rio in Hampshire County, you'd better pronounce it RY-oh, like the locals do. Meanwhile, Iaeger, the vowel-heavy town in McDowell County, is pronounced YAY-gur--similar to Jägermeister, the German liquor. Read on for more place names you might be mispronouncing, and be sure to check out Part 1 of the story.  Read more: https://www.wboy.com/only-on-wboy-com/west-virginia-place-names-you-might-be-pronouncing-wrong/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. National Geographic magazine chose whitewater rafting in the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve for its “Best of the World” Top 20 Travel Experiences for 2024.   “West Virginia in particular was a fun addition for us, as we tend to look for places that combine both interesting culture – like Appalachia – and natural wonder,” said Amy Alipio, senior editor of travel. “Not many people know that New River is actually one of the world's oldest rivers – or that it's one of the best places in the world to go whitewater rafting!    This designation follows a series of recent major announcements by Forbes Advisor, Thrillist, Condé Nast Traveler, Outside Magazine, Lonely Planet, TIME, USA Today and Frommer's among others, that together rank West Virginia as a leading global destination for travel.    Read more: https://governor.wv.gov/News/press-releases/2024/Pages/Gov.-Justice-announces-West-Virginia-named-top-global-travel-destination-yet-again.aspx   #3 – From SHINE ON, WV –  Joe Strechay is a blind man who lives in Fayetteville, West Virginia and works in the film industry as a blindness consultant and associate producer.  As a disability advocate and a lover of film and stories, his unique perspective has helped build projects like Netflix's “Daredevil” (2015), Apple TV+'s “See” starring Jason Momoa, and Netflix's latest hit show “All the Light We Cannot See.” He's not just changing the game on accessibility and representation, but hopes to be the first fully blind film director. Grounding, Pt. 1— Is Earthing the Best Anti-Inflammatory in the World? [Top Episode of 2023!]

Commonly called Earthing, grounding has been an available source of energy to our cells (from an evolutionary perspective) as long as the sun; perhaps, that is why is has such a powerful affect over our biology. Ironically, just as we have disengaged ourselves from consistent sun exposure (mal-illumination, anyone?) we have ignorantly disconnected ourselves from the very planet we live on. Consider this: the mere rubber between our feet and the surface of the earth may be the largest culprit of modern day chronic health diseases and cancer. Seem far-fetched?During this three-part solosode series, I will be unpacking some of the most important health information you can hear at this moment in time from the book, Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever. Throughout this series, you will learn that, like optimizing your light environment, it is the act of simply becoming aware and consistently applying this free "treatment" (of grounding) to your health regimen that could have life-changing results for you, family members and/or friends. Like red light therapy, the list of health conditions that can be mitigated, prevented and even reversed with grounding are endless. I couldn't be more excited to get this information out to you all and begin 2023 off on the right foot  — preferably, both feet on the ground absorbing earth's free electrons. Go check out their range on insta (@burnleybrewing), online at www.burnleybrewing.com.au and IRL at 648 Bridge Road Richmond.   And keep your eyes open for some prizes for listeners which will be up for grabs in the next little while.   The episode stretches on, covering the highlights of all the courses at Barnbougle, the holes on Bougle Run, and so much more. Greensites, feeder slopes, BD v LF, 18a and more. Our latest All Star of Turf is Jason Haines, whom many in the industry will remember for his high profile social media presence (as @PenderSuper) that suddenly went dark several years ago. As the golf course superintendent at Pender Harbour Golf Club and later Sunshine Coast Golf Club in British Columbia, Jason developed (by necessity) a low-input, minimalist turf maintenance strategy that he shared and brainstormed with his Twitter following of 8,000+ before deciding to step away from social media entirely. In the interim he was invited to speak at turf conferences in the US, Canada and internationally. In April of 2023 Jason made the leap from British Columbia 3000 miles east to take over the reins at Cabot Links on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Along with Cabot Cliffs and a newer 10-hole short course, Cabot Links is part of Cabot Cape Breton and is ranked #35 on the World Top 100 golf courses. Cabot Cliffs is ranked #1 in Canada. In this fascinating conversation with Peter McCormick, Jason recounts the reasoning behind the advent of his minimalist turf maintenance programs, explains his departure from social media, and the positive move east to Cabot Cape Breton for him and his family. He uses the term "awesome" quite a bit in the conversation.

At Stylumia we believe in augmenting human intelligence in fashion and lifestyle retail for a better world.   With relevant data and the right technology, people and businesses in fashion and lifestyle retail can solve hard problems and change the world for the better.   In 2015-16, when we looked at the available technology and solutions, we saw fashion forecasting and demand planning are either subjective in nature, or traditional consumer research based going with what consumers say, or data platforms which throw supply driven signals. We saw these methods do not solve the fundamental challenge in fashion trend spotting, prediction and the business metrics of full price sell through continue to remain around the 50% mark creating over USD 750 billion/annum of wastage globally. The biggest wastage in the fashion industry is the one caused by ill-informed decision making.   We saw a need for a different kind of technology and approach and we knew it would need a different kind of company to build it. That is why we formed Stylumia.   Stylumia is one of the fastest-growing fashion tech start-ups with Fortune 100 clients to mid-sized ones, solving a fundamental challenge of the business, predicting future demand for an unseen product. The global fashion industry is around 3 Trillion USD, half of which is not what the consumer wants. This huge supply-demand gap poses a huge sustainability threat to the planet. United Nations and Fashion for Good are rallying for us. Using AI, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Stylumia has a proven methodology to improve the prediction accuracy of fashion brands and retailers across 7 countries. We strongly believe in eliminating waste before it happens.      Stylumia has many awards and recognitions.
