I have struggled with emotional eating for awhile now. There are three things I am doing to try and combat the stress, anxiety, and depression that emotional eating has added to my life. As a result of my postpartum depression I realized I have gained weight as a coping mechanism from the added stress of doing it all as a single mother. I had to be honest with myself and face my emotional eating habits. Here are the things I am doing to wok through this and overcome it. Remembering my WHY- I want to set a healthy example for my daughter so I decided to start doing all that I can to face my emotional eating. Using IF/THEN statements- putting myself in a scenario before it happens with my emotional eating has helped me realize the points when I may turn to food as an outlet from my anxiety, stress, or if I feel depressed. The if/then statements really help put you in that situation before it happens so you can recognize when you are turning to food and replace that with a healthier way to manage the emotions that are most difficult. Taking away the guilt- I have always beat myself up and shamed myself when I wasn't eating the right way, but now I am trying to give myself grace as I replace an unhealthy habit with one that is good for my mental and physical health. I am glad I finally have the courage to acknowledge my emotional eating patterns and now that I have it is time for me to take action. As I grow and walk through this journey I hope my experience can help you if you have gained weight too as a result of ongoing stress, anxiety, or depression. Life can be very stressful and uncertain at times because of all that we are facing lately. Here's to building healthier habits and investing in our mental health in 2022 cause we deserve it! Do you ever feel like you lack unconditional self love and wonder what it would do for your stress and anxiety if you were more patient and graceful toward yourself? Sometimes we are actually our own harshest critics and our inner critic causes us added and unnecessary stress and anxiety. It is good for us to start retraining our minds to let go of the idea of being perfect and just start meeting ourselves where we are at. Learning to be more present and in the flow when we feel frustrated can really make a positive difference for our mental health. There is power in evaluating our thoughts as they occur in our minds before we react or take action. Asking ourselves if we do or say this will it actually benefit my relationship with myself is huge step to decreasing our stress and anxiety. It takes time and patience to do this, but eventually our minds can begin to adapt to this new way of thinking. I used to let the actions of my parents really get to me mentally and hurt me so deeply. All their words and actions or lack thereof really caused me so much stress and anxiety. Until I realized their actions had nothing to do with me and I reclaimed power over my own life and my thoughts. Investing in ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually is an act of radical and unconditional self love. However, when we take those action steps we will find our anxiety and stress levels decrease. Loving yourself changes things when you are healing from past trauma because it allows you to accept yourself where you are at and step into the healing process for your mental health journey. Giving yourself credit for the battles you have fought and the warrior you are empowers you mentally to take positive and life changing action. Evaluating where you are at and deciphering what truly causes you stress and anxiety on a daily basis makes a difference. Pure and genuine self love helps you give yourself grace and motivates you to overcome the stress and anxiety your thoughts may have been adding to. Accepting myself for who I am and being comfortable with where I am at has helped me reduce some of the intense anxiety and stress I have been facing throughout my life. As we go into 2022 let's have conversations about healing our relationship with ourselves so we can practice more self love. When we decide to love ourselves for the battles we have fought and the beautiful warriors we are we will be empowered to overcome the depression, stress and anxiety we have been struggling with for so long. This past year I was able to overcome so many obstacles because of the women I has surrounding me. Many people walked out of my life, but that is okay because it made room for the right people to come into it. I am thankful for those who support me because they helped me overcome the odds I have been facing this past year. If you don't have a strong support system for your mental health you will feel like you are facing it all alone. When you start surrounding yourself with people who want the best for you then you will get through it. This past year I gained so many people who really have my best interest at heart into my life. 3 Reasons Why you NEED a STRONG SUPPORT SYSTEM for your Mental Health: A strong support system gives you encouragement and uplifts you when you need it most. They can save your from isolation because they take the time to check in on you and make sure you are ok mentally. The right people will show you the value that you have even when you feel worthless. Thank you to all of those who have helped me overcome my seasonal affective depression disorder and my postpartum depression. I would not be where I am at today without you! The power of visualization can help us get to the next level. Each year I always create a vision board for myself, but this year I hope we can do it together as a community. When we see the life we want in our minds and what we hope for it helps us get to where we want to go. This year, as I think about manifestation, I am hoping to improve my mental health and physical health in ways I have never been able to do before. If we do it together as friends, we can give each other more accountability and have fun at the same time. I'm so grateful for the recent calendar photoshoot experience. It was a healing experience for all. 2022 will be the best year ever and different for me in terms of my health and the things I want to do to improve my mental state. Making a visual representation of our goals can help us have the physical and mental health we dream of. Mental practices like visualization can increase motivation, confidence, and even motor performance. It's important to remember to visualize your goals when you're working towards improving your mental and physical health. In one study, researchers found that in athletes, visualization was almost as effective as physical practice. I'm hoping to get more comfortable with my body this coming year. Putting pictures of other women that inspire me on my vision board or myself at my best version is empowering. Using words like "confidence" on my board will help me visualize a greater future for myself as well. Take a moment to reflect on two things that matter the most to you. For me, it's my physical and mental health. Bring those two things that matter the most to you at the forefront of your mind. Focus on the words or quotes you find the most powerful, for me they are, "stress less" and "don't worry, be happy". When you map out your goals with the goal getter guidebook select two main areas of your life that are the most important to you. This will help you create that vision for yourself in 2022. It can be a powerful way to start your vision board. If you are local, we hope you will join us for our 2022 vision board and holiday party. We will have gifts and other fun stuff going on. So stay tuned for more information. I hope you enjoy today's episode. TEXT THE WORD WARRIOR TO 866-502-0703 TO JOIN AND SCREENSHOT IT TO US TO GET YOUR FREE GUIDEBOOK! On today's episode, I talk about how we can evaluate our health currently if we have been dealing with PTSD and Past Trauma. It can be a challenge to get our health back on track in the midst of healing from the suffering of our past trauma and PTSD. We are so used to being in survival mode that we may forget what it looks like to fully take care of our selves and restore our own health. For some of us, we may only know our trauma and may feel really defeated when it comes to managing our own health that we do not even know how to start. What I am doing to get my health back on track is evaluating my health overall in terms of my mind, body, and soul. I have asked myself these questions: HOW HAS MY MIND BEEN CARRYING THE TRAUMA? HOW HAVE I BEEN TREATING MY BODY AS A RESULT OF PTSD? HOW HAS MY SOUL SUFFERED BECAUSE OF THE TRAUMA? When we are able to evaluate ourselves and our health currently we can see what thoughts and beliefs need to be healed and worked through. In 2022, I plan to check in on myself daily with these three questions as I begin this new journey and level up so I can be my healthiest version. YOU GUYS! This is the mental health pick me up we all need once in awhile when things are crazy & hectic…. I wanted to send you reminders twice a week to take care of YOU & YOUR MENTAL HEALTH! IBD AWARENESS WEEK is this week and as some of you may know I am an IBD Warrior myself. I live with a j-pouch now and have ulcerative colitis. I previously had an ostomy bag and on today's episode I have a conversation with the host of the About IBD podcast her name is Amber Tresca and she has a similar story to mine a lot of ways. She does a lot to inform others about IBD and what it is like to live with it. Amber is an IBD patient (diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 1989) who has been writing and editing patient-facing content for the IBD community since 2000 both for major online outlets and on her own site, AboutIBD.com. After 10 years of active disease, medical therapy failed and she underwent the 2 step j-pouch surgery (removal of the large intestine and creation of an internal pouch from the last part of the small intestine). In 2017, she began the About IBD Podcast to educate people living with IBD about their disease and to bring awareness to the patient journey. She founded IBDMoms with Brooke Abbott of The Crazy Creole Mommy Chronicles to support moms who are touched by an IBD. She currently works as a speaker, facilitator, and advocate for people with IBD as well as a freelance writer and editor for medical web sites and publications. Types of IBD include: Ulcerative colitis. This condition involves inflammation and sores (ulcers) along the superficial lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. Crohn's disease. This type of IBD is characterized by inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which often can involve the deeper layers of the digestive tract. Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease usually are characterized by diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, fatigue and weight loss. IBD can be debilitating and sometimes leads to life-threatening complications. Thank you so much for listening to today's episode to learn more about IBD. YOU GUYS! This coming week is IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) Awareness Week and so I wanted to open up about how my Ulcerative Colitis diagnosis taught me to be my own health advocate and I hope it helps remind you to advocate for your health too…. I go into details about my experience with Ulcerative Colitis on today's podcast episode and during a few upcoming episodes. This week is IBD awareness week and I wanted to create content for you surrounding my chronic illness so I could tell you more about myself and hopefully provide some insight on some of the things I learned from the past 7 years with all my health battles. When I look back on my experience I realize how being your own health advocate needs to be more normalized. So many of us are told to trust our doctors blindly, but it is good to always advocate for your own health because you are the only one living in your body. I feel like if I would have known more about this earlier my health problems could have been way less severe…. 5 IMPORTANT THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT BEING MY OWN HEALTH ADVOCATE FOR MY CHRONIC ILLNESS: 1. If something seems serious ADDRESS IT EARLY ON…. (You don't want to let it go make sure you get checked if you suspect something is wrong with your health. Early detection can be prevention for more serious illnesses…) 2. Don't be afraid to go to as many doctors as it takes! You want to make sure you get multiple opinions when dealing with a serious health issue…. 3. MAKE THE CHOICES YOU FEEL ARE RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR HEALTH* do not let friends, family or even healthcare professionals tell you they know your body better especially if in your heart you know something is wrong. 4. Check in with yourself emotionally & mentally when you are fighting physical health issues… Chronic health problems can take a tool on our mental health so make sure you are taking care of that aspect of your wellness too! 5. Find support from people with the same or similar health issues because someone in a similar situation can relate to you more so you feel less isolated! The tips I outlined are things I learned along the way from my battle with Ulcerative Colitis and other chronic illnesses. I hope they are helpful as you navigate your own health journey and implement different things that work for you. Do not be afraid to speak up or do whatever it takes. Always advocate for yourself to others because no one else is living in your body except for you! What is not always seen on the outside can be felt internally so do whatever you can to find the right medical professionals and support systems to help you along your health journey that is uniquely yours alone. YOU GUYS! This is the mental health pick me up we all need once in awhile when things are crazy & hectic…. I wanted to send you reminders twice a week to take care of YOU & YOUR MENTAL HEALTH! On today's episode, my good friend Audrey Rose is back to talk with me all about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and how it shows up in our lives. Many of us experience seasonal depression during the holiday season. As we wrap up thanksgiving and go into Christmas I though it would be important to talk about our mental health surrounding the holidays. For a time of the year that is joyous and full of love for many we often forget how many people are struggling with anxiety, stress & depression during the holidays. For those of you experiencing seasonal depression I hope Audrey's story and experience with it can help. On today's episode, I talk with former hospice nurse and woman warrior member of our STRONG HER community Miranda Duman all about grief. During the holiday season grief tends to hit us even more than usual because we think about the ones we love during the holidays. Having open conversations about how we navigate our grief not just during the holidays but at all times is so important to help us get through it. If you need someone to talk to about your grieving process you can always connect with the women in our community and go to a supportive therapist. You are not alone in your grieving process and remember everyone grieves differently. Miranda recommends: Being intentional, practicing self care and not being afraid to have conversations about grief! I also gave the following four tips as a way to navigate the pandemic and get through these challenging times. 1. Have conversations and be open minded to others 2. Make the choices that are best for your health and be your own advocate 3. Be mindful of the news and things you read on social media 4. If you feel it is best for you to keep your health decisions private do not let others intimidate you to have to share I hope these tips help you as they have helped me navigate all the talk lately surrounding the vaccine mandates and what that looks like for our own health decisions. On today's Warrior Wednesday we are talking all about identifying past traumas as we begin our healing journey! The past is not always in the past; we need to find we need to find what may still be active in our experience and impacting our current experience in terms of our relationships and mental health. Unresolved traumas lead to the compulsion to repeat them. Here is the R.A.I.N. method that we use to start identifying our past traumas. R.A.I.N. by Dr. Jack Kornfield Recognize- pause and notice what you are feeling Accept/Acknowledge/Allow- whatever strong emotion you have in the moment Investigate- start to investigate your internal experience through the S.I.F.T method (sensations, images, feelings, thoughts) by Daniel Siegel Non-identification- don't let it define you, see it as just a memory This strategy can apply to any of the traumas we will go over, start with the trauma having the biggest impact on you and use this strategy to start working through it. "Heal your trauma so that you can't use it as an excuse to stay stuck in behavioral patterns that continue to hurt you." Today, we will talk about Early Childhood Trauma! We will start by thinking about our family dynamics and seeing how that has impacted us throughout our lives. We want you to remember that your parent's actions had nothing to do with you but everything to do with what they were going through at the time. They more than likely did the best they can with what they knew to be true at that time. Ongoing therapy and self help CAN help us overcome any childhood trauma we experienced. What causes childhood trauma? neglect loss of a parent serious childhood illness abuse a learning disability emotionally unavailable or anxious parents if your parents had their own unresolved childhood trauma Some symptoms that unhealed childhood trauma can cause: depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, anxiety and chronic worry, relationship fears, low self esteem, people pleasing, social anxiety and frustration "Sometimes you may feel overwhelmed by the past and that is okay. Any progress is better than trying too hard to reach perfection." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/reganne-obrien/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/reganne-obrien/support

Welcome to the NEW podcast Damn, She is Strong! We are so excited to have you here. Today's episode is all about overcoming trauma. Here are the key takeaways from today's episode: We need to ADDRESS AND ASSESS our trauma to start the process of overcoming it! We can do this INTERNALLY through meditation practices of some kind. We can do this EXTERNALLY by going to counseling or an unbiased source for support! When we start to overcome any previous limiting beliefs that we may have we are able to begin our journey of overcoming trauma in our lifes.
