"Active moms are going to have more active infants!" Pregnancy is an imprinting experience for the moms, infants and families. Since every action may influence the fetus' health, knowledge about how to act during pregnancy is crucial. But also for minimising the risk for complications during and after pregnancy, exercise plays a critical role. - What exercises are recommended? - What are contraindications? - What about high-intensity training? AND - How can you individualise training? These are just a few questions that I asked my guest Stephanie Paplinskie. Steph is about to finish her PhD about "The impact of exercise in the postpartum period" at the University of Western, Canada. But she is so much more than a PhD candidate. Starting as an Aquafit instructor, she started her own buisness to "enpower women to live the most active/healthy pregnancies they can." Steph is an expert in the field, is doing workouts herself every day, teaches at several universities and is about to start her own podcast. She's simply unstoppable!

Chanda Temple is an award-winning journalist turned award-winning public relations pro and author. In Mayor Woodfin's first administration, she served as the public information officer. In his second term, she is serving as senior project manager. Chanda likes to do things that are smart, that inspire and that yield results. When ideas come to her, watch out because they are usually doozies. She handles numerous public engagement projects out of the Mayor's Office, including the city's 150th celebration in 2021; Food Truck Friday during the summer months; and StrongHer. This year marks the 5th year she has led the city's StrongHer campaign, an initiative she birthed after Mayor Woodfin saw a need to recognize unsung sheroes in Birmingham during Women's History Month in March. Since the campaign started in 2019, the city has recognized more than 160 women. StrongHer is featured on the city's social media pages and city website, www.birminghamal.gov/strongher. It is the largest annual series on the city's social media channels. Chanda is also the co-author of two, award-winning cookbooks that highlight dishes from Birmingham restaurants. They are Birmingham's Best Bites, published in 2014 and reprinted in 2015; and Magic City Cravings, published in 2017.
Each March, the City of Birmingham publishes daily StrongHer profiles featuring under-recognized women who are leading our community. Guests: Chanda Temple, Senior Project Manager, City of Birmingham Mayor's Office Jacqueline McKinney - StrongHer Candidate Retired dressmaker, housekeeper and caterer Jacqueline McKinney has taken it upon herself to pick up trash in her neighborhood after failing to get a larger dumpster for her Woodlawn apartment complex. Once she is done in her neighborhood, the 69-year-old hits First Avenue North to pick up litter. She does all this, despite health issues. She also volunteers to cook to help loved ones when they've lost someone. Allison Sanders - StrongHer Candidate Made her stage debut at the Alabama Theatre at the age of six in the Sound of Music. The space will be home to condos, eateries and an incubator space for small businesses. Terri Harvill, StrongHer Honoree Terri has worked for the YMCA of Greater Birmingham for more than 30 years, first working while she was in high school. Serving the community has always been her focus, which is why a new project in Roebuck means so much to her. The expression "cat lady" comes with a lot of baggage, something writer and podcaster Dawn O'Porter couldn't understand. She talks to Jen about her new book Cat Lady, which challenges stereotypes around the love we have for our pets. They also chat complicated characters, the reality of living in LA, and the ongoing refugee crisis*.Imagine a women-only fitness space that encourages women to strength train with heavy weights and builds confidence as much as muscle. It's real! StrongHer, in London's Bethnal Green (but with excellent online options), exists thanks to Tig Hodson and Sam Prynn, who created a place they wanted to work out in. And it's where our Mick flips tyres and chucks herself over walls. She borrowed Jenny Off The Blocks for a week to chat with Tig about strength training, listening to your cycle, and why the fear of getting ‘bulky' is a nonsense.Lucas “Luke” Jackson clearly isn't worried about a bit of bulk, as he stuffs 50 eggs down his gullet in one of cinema's most iconic scenes. Yep, this week's Rated or Dated is 1967 prison drama classic, Cool Hand Luke and unlikely inspiration for Hannah. And in the Bush Telegram, there's bad at your job and then there's Suella Braverman. *You can donate to Choose Love here.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. With funding for female founders still dismally low, female investors can make a differenceWhen Ankita Vashistha began making angel investments in Singapore, India, and the U.S. more than a decade ago, she was struck by the dearth of female founders–a problem that persists to this day. In the U.S., female-founded startups still garner only 2% of venture capital funding. This led her to launch her first fund in 2015 and StrongHer Ventures two years ago, both focusing on early stage startups that are either founded by women or cater to female consumers–the first such funds in India, according to Ankita. StrongHer invests in founders primarily in the U.S., U.K., India who are building companies in fintech, healthcare, future of work, consumer, and Web3. Along the way, Ankita sharpened her investment skills by participating in 500 Global's venture education program. This week, I've got the brilliant Margaret Weniger joining me, she is the founder of Rising Tide after a 10-year career in sales leadership. Margaret is someone who has been in the corporate world, knows the challenges and understands the lived experience of women at the very top. Margaret has interviewed women at the very top of organisations, across a range of professions to really understand what these leaders share. What do they have in common? What's made them so successful? What's helped them fulfil all that potential that they have? Through these interviews, Margaret has produced five ways that leaders live to their fullest potential. Here are the highlights: (05:14) Margaret's background (10:40) It's all about balance (12:30) The five ways that leaders live to their fullest potential (13:17) Number One: They had a strong career crew (13:47) Number Two: They are proficient networkers (18:07) Number Three: Understand what matters (26:42) Number Four: Listening to their intuition (32:55) Number Five: Open-ended career goals (41:47) Where can people start to make a change? Rising Tide was created for two purposes: to create exposure and build a community for the people who believe we need to change the business world. Throughout her career, the unchanging theme was being the only female in the room. The higher she climbed she hoped to wield her influence to impact change not just within her org but within her company and profession. She became increasingly aware that the only way to truly make a change was to make this mission her career. As the founder of Rising Tide, Margaret is on a mission to create balance of masculine and feminine power within companies to create collaborative, successful, and sustainable environments built for human beings rather than ideal employees. In order to do this, women must be elevated and empowered to show up as themselves and live in their fullest potential. For this to happen, it starts with each one of us individually doing the work. We must first understand ourselves so we can transform the world around us. Rising Tide serves as a catalyst by providing exposure and community to enable women to live their fullest potential. As women grow, the tide rises and the story changes. To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven. (Eccl 3:1 NKJV) If you've been listening for a while, you may have noticed some consistency back towards the end of last year and then a drop off. I had a team of 2 amazing women who helped me produce this podcast and to show up consistently on social media. In November after attending an influencer event in Nashville, I started some soul searching around this podcast. I made the decision to not invest financially in having a team to edit and produce the podcast and help me with my social media presence on IG @strongherme. I had no idea when I made that decision, that a few months later, I would be making another bigger decision about the podcast. I've cried a few tears thinking about all I plan to share with you today. My first episode of this podcast went live Feb 2017. Back then it was name the StrongHer podcast. If you go back and listen to that first episode, it's a clip of my message from the 2017 You Are Stronger Than You Think Women's Event. Our theme that year was Who Am I? In that episode I share the origins of the 'You Are Stronger Than You Think' message, stories from my own life of how God uncovers purpose and calling. The previous year's event included a Friday night event and 5K race. It came with some harsh criticism from an attendee. - it was my greatest fear and my wakeup call: I needed to be the leader my vision deserved. I needed to ask for help; I needed to push beyond the fear of criticism to be a more brave and authentic leader. After some deep reflection, prayer and talks with my husband and friends, I'm discerning it's time to bring this podcast to a close. My initial purpose for starting this podcast was to have a platform to share women's stories and their expertise, as I affirmed women that there is grace to be successful as keepers of the home and as professional women. This journey has produced more in my life than I could have known to ask for and the growth I've experienced in 4 years, in part, due to the discipline of publishing this podcast, is something that I not only wouldn't trade, but I also highly recommend this or some other creative pursuit that requires you to stretch, as your own personal development tool. Here are just 3 of the ways I've grown, as a direct result of this pursuit: I've learned authenticity through this podcast. It has required me to process my own thoughts about topics. I've learned new skills, capabilities (listening, interviewing, technical skills around podcasting). I've learned new things about myself. I've reclaimed my voice through this podcast. When I say “voice”, sometimes I'm referring to your actual voice; other times I'm referring to your influence, your mission, your values, your perspective, your story. Your voice is one of the parts of you that identifies you in this world. I've learned how to tend to my own heart while staying faithful to a vision in my heart/soul, without constant validation of its impact. Talk about Hebrews 3,4. Hebrews 3: 12 Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13 You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Hebrews 4: 6 So God's rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. 10 For all who have entered into God's rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. 11 So let us do our best to enter that rest. These 3 things alone are enough for me. I am confident I have gone all in with this and that before I could even recognize or articulate it, God has been ordering my steps and working out things in me in this process. I believe my intended purpose and the one God has worked out in me over the last 4 years has been fulfilled and I am incredibly proud of this body of work. In your favorite podcast app, you can listen to over 100 episodes that will encourage you as you work the plan God has entrusted to you. My version of entering God's rest is an act of surrender, an act of obedience, an act of trust. I trust God with where all this has been leading and there's apart of me that believes that it's always been leading to right where I am now. None of my work has been in vain. It has all mattered. Before you go… In 2022 I am resting from the work of daily/weekly visibility online. I am not resting from my primary work of leadership coaching and consulting. As a matter of fact, I believe freeing up the mental energy, time and resources required to produce this podcast, will give me renewed energy and focus for my work. In case you aren't aware, my work is centered around helping mission-driven CEOs/leaders become the leader their vision deserves through activating their strengths and the strength of their team. What that looks like in this current season is (a) I am partnering with the leader of a global DEI organization to provide leadership coaching and diversity training for her corporate and nonprofit clients. (b) I help business and ministry leaders who have reached a level of mastery in their field plan, produce and launch a digital leadership development resource that creates an additional stream of income in their business or ministry. (c ) I provide private coaching for mission-driven women CEOs who want to become the leader their vision deserves through activating their strengths and the strength of their team. On today's episode, I talk with former hospice nurse and woman warrior member of our STRONG HER community Miranda Duman all about grief. During the holiday season grief tends to hit us even more than usual because we think about the ones we love during the holidays. Having open conversations about how we navigate our grief not just during the holidays but at all times is so important to help us get through it. If you need someone to talk to about your grieving process you can always connect with the women in our community and go to a supportive therapist. You are not alone in your grieving process and remember everyone grieves differently. Miranda recommends: Being intentional, practicing self care and not being afraid to have conversations about grief! September is my birthday month so we are taking a little walk down memory lane. I'll share how I grew from the inside out in each season of transition. We're calling this series “My evolution as a woman”. As I share my truths, I hope it will ignite in you a desire to reflect over each season of transition in your life and anywhere you've been stagnant you'll be re-energized. This week I share from my 20s. This is when I was navigating my new identities as a wife and a mom. So, learning to build our village wasn't optional. It was a necessity. I believe our quality of life would have been diminished without the support of these people in our lives. // Download the "StrongHer Together eBook! https://strongherme.ck.page/ebook // Join us for our Fall Activation Circle. Today's episode is about a financial journey of recovery when you set out to do the right thing but life takes a turn. I'm joined by Kendra Tillman, the founder of StrongHer.me Coaching & Consulting. She is also a healthy marriage champion, a published author, and a podcaster. Kendra and her husband wanted to create generational wealth for their children but found themselves in a financially devastating situation. As they pushed through the hurt, embarrassment, and pain of recovering, they found new strength within themselves. Kendra's story reminds us that through the hard times, God is still working and when it looks like the plan is failing, God is sitting back saying ‘I got you'. The Strong[HER] Way | non diet approach, mindset coaching, lifestyle advice
Hey loves, this week on The Strong[HER] Way we are talking about losing weight without dieting. Here's what most people don't realize, dieting is all about your thoughts. Whether or not you're dieting has to do with how you think about food, your weight, and what you *think* you should look like, weigh, eat etc. The catch is most of the things we think we should be eating/not eating, what we should/shouldn't weigh comes from the outside world. Meaning it's all kind of made up anyway. Which ultimately means you can choose to make up other rules you'd rather live by instead. As I've shared on the show before, I've gone from not caring at all about what I ate, hated to exercise, but also hated the number on the scale and what my body looked like. I've also stepped on stage as a figure competitor, cared too much about what I ate and what I looked like, over exercised, and still didn't like what my body looked like. The actions had changed, but the mindset was still the same. For the past month, I've been working on losing 8 pounds. I know, I know. This sounds like I'm selling out of the non-diet approach, but actually it's the opposite. I realized, avoiding something doesn't make it go away. I had been avoiding the scale for the past few years. And as long as I didn't get on, I felt fine. I wanted to see what sort of thoughts and feelings were left from the many years of chronic dieting. So I set out to see just that. In today's episode, I share my experience, and some of the biggest take aways. If you're ready to finally experience freedom from the scale and from food forever so that you can become Strong[HER] in all areas of your life, schedule a consult by emailing alisha@alishacarlson.com.
