In this episode of Trauma Rewired, hosts Elisabeth Kristof, Jennifer Wallace, and Matt Bush delve into the intricate relations between complex trauma, neurodivergence, and brain function dysregulation. The conversation highlights how gradual exposure to non-threatening stimuli can help manage threat responses, and the importance of achieving balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems for resilience. They discuss neurological pathways affected by trauma and neurodivergence, focusing on the interplay between creativity, logical processing, and emotional regulation. The hosts emphasize understanding oneself deeply, revealing personal strengths, and valuing unique sensitivities to foster self-compassion and improve coping mechanisms. Elisabeth Kristof underscores the vital role of play in activating joy and the significance of building a nurturing internal environment. She explains that while it's impossible to fully "rewire" oneself, there is potential for experiencing new ways of thriving through the nervous system. The episode also explores vertical integration, encompassing the brainstem, limbic system, and prefrontal cortex, discussing how disruptions lead to chronic stress and emotional reactivity. The hosts examine societal expectations and their impact on neurodivergent individuals, advocating for a shift towards recognizing and celebrating unique neurological differences. Topics Discussed: Gradual exposure to non-threatening stimuli for managing threat responses. Dysregulation in brain function and its impact on behavior and diagnosis. Role of play in activating joy and fostering emotional health. Vertical integration and its necessity for maintaining presence and connection. Impact of early childhood trauma on nervous system programming. Relationship between complex trauma, neurodivergence, and sensory processing. Societal pressures and their traumatic impact on neurodivergent individuals. Unconscious patterning influencing brain development and trauma responses. Does growing up in chaos impact our nervous systems even as adults? In this episode, we are looking at early childhood dynamics and how it's expressed in adulthood through unconscious behaviors and coping mechanisms. I have brought in a guest who is especially dear to my heart and has played a very significant and pivotal role in my own journey. Dr. Tian Dayton specializes in addiction and trauma, especially when it comes to speaking to the adult child of an alcoholic. Dr. Dayton is also a leading voice in psychodrama, and she has a very incredible way of combining movement and the body with it, which gives her patients the opportunity to access different times in their past, be able to role play with them and give them a voice that they did not have before. In this episode you'll learn: The kind of coping mechanisms we develop in response to early trauma The importance of integrating movement and emotional expression in therapy The importance of physical touch and intimacy in early childhood development How perceived sense of danger can lead to a collapse in the nervous system What kind of environments provide the structure needed for trauma resolution For more information and show notes, please visit our website: https://biologyoftrauma.com/biology-of-trauma-podcast/
As I bring The Commons with Karla to a close, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey we've shared since the podcast launched in March 2021. What began as a simple idea to highlight the stories of everyday women has blossomed into three years of exploring the beauty and complexity of our shared human experiences — connection, loss, purpose, and joy. Through these stories, I've grown, and I hope you have too. It's bittersweet to say goodbye to this chapter, but I'm filled with gratitude for the connections we've made and the lessons we've learned together. Although this is the end of the podcast, it's not the end of our journey. I'll continue living purposefully and invite you to do the same. Let's stay connected as we move forward, cherishing the moments and relationships that make life truly meaningful. Thank you for being part of this beautiful era with me. In this episode, Dr. Fred Moss interviews Sarah Rees Evans, a Chronic Fatigue Expert based in Champcevinel, France. Overcoming 20+ years of severe chronic fatigue, Sarah shares insights on the impact of childhood trauma on conditions like CFS and fibromyalgia. Her holistic approach includes personalized support with testing, nutrition, Qigong, and trauma release. Sarah emphasizes the interconnectedness of autoimmunity and burnout, urging listeners to shift mindsets and address root causes for improved energy and recovery. The interview highlights the importance of support groups and practical self-care implementation in the journey to reclaiming one's life. Here are some key takeaways from the podcast interview: Sarah overcame 20+ years of severe chronic fatigue by addressing trauma and reconnecting spiritually to transform limiting beliefs. She sees CFS and fibromyalgia as nervous system imbalances often rooted in adverse childhood experiences that disconnect mind, body and spirit. Sarah meets clients where they are with customized support - testing, nutrition, practices like Qigong, trauma release, ancestral healing and more to enable recovery. Autoimmunity and burnout also overlap; seeing conditions wholistically, not just as isolated physical symptoms, is key yet commonly lacking. No matter what medical opinions one has heard, improved energy levels and recovery are possible through shifting mindsets and addressing root causes. Support groups bringing accountability also motivate implementing self-care, not just a theoretical luxury. Mark Rizkallah joins us to help tackle mental illness. Learn about him below, but here are a few additional areas of discussion:-Psychotropics-Why he believes substance abuse is a side effect of mental health -Early childhood trauma-Psychedelics-Setting goals-The power of ice bathsMark, who was born in Lebanon, arrived in the United States at the age of four after his parents decided to leave their country due to the ongoing civil war. When they arrived in Los Angeles, CA his parents secured employment at a relative's bakery and Mark continued his education. No longer worried about hiding from Mortar fire, Mark excelled in school and became the first person in his family to graduate from college. With his degree in psychology, Mark quickly got to work, jumping in headfirst, securing work at a subacute treatment facility treating those struggling with schizophrenia. It was in this position that Mark had the opportunity to witness the complexities ofmental illness and the challenges presented in treating those with severe and persistent mental illness as well as substance abuse. Mark was particularly intrigued with the medications and primary treatment methods which were utilized in this setting. Diving deeper into pharmacology, Mark began researching alternatives to standard psychotropic medications and found himself learning more and more about the powers of psychedelics to treat mental illness and substance use. “Traditional methods of treatment are only saving a small group of people, 7%-10% success rates while psychedelics are boasting 50%-60% success inEuropean studies.”With this knowledge Mark decided it was time for him to offer unique and successfultreatment techniques and modalities to his community. This is when he launched Tulua Health. He is passionate about spreading education on alternative treatmentmethods for those struggling with mental illness and substance use disorders. He also hopes to inspire those in recovery to follow their dreams and to encourage them to set the bar high for themselves.Guest Website: www.TuluaHealth.comBrought to you by Tampa Counseling and Wellness- Dedicated to helping individuals looking to positively transform their lives through compassionate counseling and wellness coaching. TODAY'S GUEST Chris Dancy is known as "the Most Connected Man on Earth". Chris is a TED speaker and the author of Don't Unplug: How Technology Saved My Life and Can Save Yours Too. He was featured on Showtime's Dark Net, the cover of Businessweek, and interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, NPR, the BBC, Fox News, and Wired. Chris entered the public dialogue concerning digital health as the media started to focus on wearable technology. He earned his "Most Connected" moniker by utilizing up to 700 sensors, devices, applications, and services to track, analyze, and optimize his life, from his caloric intake to his spiritual well-being. This quantification enabled him to see the connections of otherwise invisible data, resulting in dramatic upgrades to his health, productivity, and quality of life. Today, he's a noted keynote speaker and executive workshop retreat facilitator, and guides organizations and audiences on a journey — a disruptive, breathtaking journey — into the future of computing, when behavior becomes the ultimate interface. EPISODE SUMMARY In this conversation we talk about: How he used technology to gain a measure of control and process childhood trauma. How he found his way into self-tracking, and became the world's Most Connected Man. What it means to be connected at all times, with over 700 devices and services tracking every behavior and activity into a personal database. Why he believes recording our personal histories is worth doing. How he categorizes activities and makes sense of them. What he discovered from looking at this trove of data. The outsized importance of sufficient light, pleasant soundscapes, and rest. Receipts as a spiritual instrument. And his version of technopaganism, bringing ancient rituals and modern technology together. This conversation is one of a dozen or so weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with hackers, designers, thinkers, authors, entrepreneurs, and activists who are working to change our world for the better. So follow this podcast on your favorite podcast app, or head over to RemakePod.org to subscribe. And now, let's jump right in with Chris Dancy. Bess is in her mid 20s. She lives in a small rural Pennsylvania town. As you'd expect, she's been surrounded by conservative christians as far as the eye can see for the entirety of her life. Raised in the church and educated in christian schools, Bess never fit in. Everyone around her was exactly the same – same beliefs, same hobbies, same skin color, same EVERYTHING! Sure, she made attempts to fit in, but as a young teen, Bess determined she could no longer pretend to be someone she wasn't. This authenticity and independence created turmoil within her family of origin -- particularly in the relationship with her father. It wasn't appropriate for a young girl to ask questions and think for herself. As an older teen, Bess and her dad came to an understanding that they'd just have to agree to disagree. However, as Bess' faith continued to erode, the conflict returned and this time not only with dad but into the larger circle of Bess' immediate family. Living authentically hasn't been easy. Bess at times wishes she could just turn off her hunger for truth switch. But for some of us, this is impossible to do!!We are learning how to use our voices. We're Speaking Up. And Speaking Out. Finding our Voices. And in so doing, Finding Freedom. On the Other Side. One Story at a Time. Enjoy Bess. Today, we will talk about Early Childhood Trauma! We will start by thinking about our family dynamics and seeing how that has impacted us throughout our lives. We want you to remember that your parent's actions had nothing to do with you but everything to do with what they were going through at the time. They more than likely did the best they can with what they knew to be true at that time. Ongoing therapy and self help CAN help us overcome any childhood trauma we experienced. What causes childhood trauma? neglect loss of a parent serious childhood illness abuse a learning disability emotionally unavailable or anxious parents if your parents had their own unresolved childhood trauma Some symptoms that unhealed childhood trauma can cause: depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, anxiety and chronic worry, relationship fears, low self esteem, people pleasing, social anxiety and frustration "Sometimes you may feel overwhelmed by the past and that is okay. Today's guest, Rosie Jefferies, the Managing Director of COECT, talks frankly about the fears and emotions she experienced as a small child at the start of her adoption journey.Rosie's profound early life trauma meant she was understandably distrustful of all adults. Indeed she viewed them as dangerous to herself and to her four younger siblings. In this podcast she gives a moving description of the fearful emotions she felt on moving in with her adoption family for the first time. She contrasts the dark of her past with the bright light of the new family home which eventually came to represent safety and security to her.Rosie is now a successful businesswoman, a wife and mother to a securely attached little boy. She has an immensely positive view of the world. This podcast edition will undoubtedly give hope to families struggling to cope. His work involves helping young children and their families recover from trauma and loss primarily through the medium of the child-parent relationship. Mica is trained in Child-Parent Psychotherapy, a trauma-informed approach to early intervention, and has an endorsement as an Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist from the California Center for Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health. He has also presented on temperament, assessment, and social-emotional development in the early years as well provided consultation to trainees learning to work with young children.
