The boogeyman of Staten Island wasn't just a story—he was real. Cropsey, the legend of a child-snatching madman lurking in the ruins of Willowbrook State School, became a chilling reality when kids began vanishing. The nightmare had a name: Andre Rand, a drifter with a dark past and ties to the infamous asylum. Convicted of kidnapping but suspected of far worse, Rand's story leaves behind more questions than answers. Was he a lone predator, or part of something even more sinister?
Ryan shares another listener ghost story from Angela to ring in the Halloween season. He then speaks with investigative filmmaker, Josh Zeman. Zeman first discusses his film, "Cropsey", a boogeyman-like figure from New York City urban legend, before segueing into the story of one Andre Rand, a convicted child kidnapper from Staten Island. Zeman journies into the underbelly as more information and clues unravel. The reality he uncovers is more terrifying than any urban legend.Zeman then transitions into a television special he created titled, "Killer Legends", in which he investigates four other deeply disturbing urban legends throughout the country and questions which came first, the urban legend or the real events? What power does storytelling have over us when it comes to reality and fantasy? Do we create the monsters in these legends? Or do they create us? It's a fascinating discussion and the perfect way to count the final days until Halloween.Follow Josh Zeman: https://x.com/joshzemanPatreon: www.patreon.com/somewhereskiesByMeACoffee: buymeacoffee.com/UFxzyzHOaQPayPal: Sprague51@hotmail.comWebsite: www.somewhereintheskies.comStore: http://tee.pub/lic/ULZAy7IY12UYouTube Channel: CLICK HERETwitch: https://www.twitch.tv/somewhereskies/videosOrder Ryan's new book: https://a.co/d/4KNQnM4Order Ryan's older book: https://amzn.to/3PmydYCTwitter: @SomewhereSkiesRead Ryan's Articles by CLICKING HEREOpening Theme Song, "Ephemeral Reign" by Per KiilstofteProduced by LIONSGATECopyright © 2024. In the shadows of the Willowbrook State School, where the myth of Cropsey evolved into a harrowing series of child disappearances, lurks a deeper, darker secret. While the urban legend of Cropsey painted a picture of a monstrous figure preying on Staten Island's vulnerable, the real horrors might trace back to clandestine activities far more sinister. Unbeknownst to the public, the chilling atmosphere and secluded nature of Willowbrook may have made it a perfect candidate for the CIA's MK-Ultra project. This covert program, aimed at developing mind control techniques, often targeted unsuspecting populations—mentally disabled children and adults secluded in institutions like Willowbrook would have been prime subjects, invisible to societal scrutiny. Andre Rand, a former orderly at Willowbrook, who later became infamous for his alleged involvement in the disappearances, might have not only been a scapegoat or a perpetrator but also a participant—or even a victim—of MK-Ultra experiments. The lack of records and the CIA's tight-lipped stance on MK-Ultra's full reach leaves a gap wide open for speculation: Was Rand conditioned or manipulated into becoming the monster he was believed to be? This shadow narrative threads together the tales of government experiments with the flesh-and-blood boogeyman of Staten Island, suggesting a conspiracy stitched deep into the fabric of this chilling historical tapestry.
This episode plunges into the chilling case of Andre Rand, the man many believe to be the real-life embodiment of the terrifying Cropsey urban legend. Once a janitor at Staten Island's Willowbrook State School, Rand became the prime suspect in a series of child disappearances in the 1970s and 1980s. Was Rand truly the monster that haunted Staten Island, or did the legend of Cropsey distort the truth? Join us as we explore the disturbing story of Andre Rand, the sinister history of Willowbrook, and the eerie line where urban legend meets horrifying reality.SPONSORSbetterhelp.com/brohio

Urban Legends are always terrifying, no matter the story. But, what's worse, the monsters in the tales or the real people they are based on? Kelsey and Pamela set out to investigate the truth behind different urban legends to see if there really are monsters behind the mask or just people. We might not be the Mystery Gang but we're here to unmask the myths. To do this, they're kicking off the new season by talking about the Hooked Hand Man of Staten Island, his origins at the horrific Willowbrook State School and the prolific serial Killer Andre Rand. Was he Cropsey or did he copy a real monster? WILLOWBROOK DOCUMENTARY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2UqDPbHs8E
One of the scariest documentaries in recent memory tells the legend of Cropsey through the eyes of the people who lived through the nightmare of an urban legend come to life. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, mentally handicapped children systematically started going missing on Staten Island and no one knew what was happening to them. At least, not until the police were able to track down a man named Andre Rand, a vagrant and former custodian at the Willowbrook State School, who they believed was responsible for the disappearances. True crime cases have fascinated mankind over the past century. Some cases being so horrific we question every aspect behind the event. There is one case in particular that shocked Staten Island to its core in the 1980s where legend and true crime co exist.Cropsey was a local legend and is rumored to be a homicidal madman, an escaped mental patient with a hook for a hand, who hunted children and dragged them back to the tunnel system that lay under the abandoned ruins of the old Seaview Hospital, a former tuberculosis sanitarium. In the 1980s a very similar crime spree took place in Staten Island in the form of the Boogeyman of Staten Island: Andre Rand. Join Tyler and Ryan as they uncover the horrors behind this true crime case.
Seit den 50er Jahren beschäftigt ein Phantom Kinder und Jugendliche in Staten Island, New York. Cropsey.
Buckle up listeners because you're in for the ride of your life with the urban legends told today.Alissa shares a hairy legend of small children hiding out in the forest who grew up to be large, hairy women lurking around sandwich crusts and possibly eating radioactive rats.Britt tells us the nightmarish urban legend of Cropsey that unfortunately ends up being somewhat true. Torture, evil medical experiments, and death surround this horrible tale.We then hear first hand experiences of Denverites sharing their personal experiences of murder houses, haunted bridges, and a yellow house that will curse you if you don't honk.Britt finishes off the episode by telling the apparently famous urban legend of the sewer alligators of New York City. What urban legends used to scare you?Today, Ian explores the true stories behind three popular urban legends. But before that, Eric presents a list of strange crimes. Specifically, non-murdery crimes since we've covered those in spades. And then, Bailey brings us the story of an extraordinary woman, who joins Mad Jack, Wojtek, and Joseph Medicine Crow on the list of World War II badasses. Do you guys even read this shit? Because if so, it's time to get weird.https://linktr.ee/Culttalknet
This week we discuss Ghislaine Maxwell, the British former socialite who was recently found guilty of child sex trafficking in connection with the financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Then we talk about Andre Rand, the real-life Cropsey currently serving two life sentences for the kidnapping of two children on Staten Island. He is suspected of murdering several more. Until next time...
This week Emily brings us another Urbanuary Legend. This time, the case of Cropsey. Cropsey was an Urban Legend set on New Yorks' Staten Island; the quintessential cautionary Boogeyman tale of children going missing if they misbehaved or wandered off from their parents. No one really put much stock in it until children really did start going missing in the 70's and 80's. Staten Island had its own real-life Boogeyman, and his name was Andre Rand.

The urban legend of Cropsey has haunted the children of Staten Island and the NY Hudson River area for decades. Is it really just an Urban Legend? Or is the legend of Cropsey somehow connected to suspected serial killer Andre Rand, who was reportedly at large for decades? We're about to break it down. Buckle up, Buckaroos. *special shoutout to singer/songwriter JoJo for being a stand out, millenial inspiration*

Heather and Cynthia go back to Staten Island to take on the case of Willowbrook state school and the atrocities that happened. Linked to Willowbrook they also discuss the serial killer Andre Rand. What do these grounds hold? hauntings, trauma or just the horrible memories or mistreatment. Listen to find out.

The legend of Cropsey is one rooted in mystery and speculation. This folktale took on a larger-than-life personality with the release of the 1981 Slasher-Horror film, The Burning. In the film teenagers pull a prank on the camp's caretaker, Cropsy, leaving him horribly disfigured and out for vengeance, as he returns to take out the teens one by one. When several children begin disappearing from Staten Island, New York, in the '70s and '80s, rumours of Cropsey's return haunted the area. Both in 1988 and in 2004, the same man was convicted in the related children abduction cases. Is this man the real Staten Island maniacal serial killer known as Cropsey, or is he simply a victim of a biased media wash? In this episode, we'll dive into the true story of Andre Rand, and the legend of Staten Island's CROPSEY. Note: Some of the terminology used in the audio clips featured in this episode are considered outdated and offensive, at the time (1965/1972), this was not the case, and these clips are historically significant in how they impacted the way our society now views those with mental disabilities. The Cropsey Urban legend is a staple on Staten Island in New York. Most of the children who grow up in the area have heard of the escaped mental patient who lives in the tunnels under the abandoned hospital. This version or similar stories tell of a crazy man who has an affinity for naughty children and would come out at night and snatch them. They would disappear forever. This well known tale unfortunately, like many tall tales and spooky nursery rhymes, has some basis in reality. Cropsey may be based on a real life serial killer named Andre Rand who preyed on some of the weakest people, children and even worse, mentally disabled children. We all know the stories. We all know the tales - the boogeyman, the hook handed escaped convict, the monster in the woods - well what if I told you that maybe, just maybe, they were all real? Okay, well, not real, but real enough to be attributed to one single person. It all started with an urban legend by the name of Cropsey. It's a silly, yet unsettling name that people threw around on Staten Island, but nobody really gave much thought to its origin, other than there was a creepy old TB ward nestled in a local wooded area. That was until the early 1970's when people started going missing. Children, to be specific. Cropsey, for the first time, felt very real. Almost too real. First a young girl, then a you adult man, and then a disabled girl. They all seemingly vanished in plain sight, with only one suspect. Years prior, a custodian at a local school for disabled kids took 11 children for a ride in his van. He bought them lunch, and then took them across state lines to the Newark airport. While he never hurt the kids, he did spend time in prison for, well, imprisoning people. That man was named Andre Rand. The police never needed to look further than Rand for the crimes, and he was soon arrested. But what happened to the victims? Were they ever found? Was he ultimately sentenced after his arrest and trial? Well, to get the full story, you'll just have to give the episode a listen. The story of Cropsey is one that's caught my attention in the past, thanks to wonderfully made documentary by the same name. I highly suggest checking that out if you want an in depth look into this case.If you would like to donate to the show, you can, and I would forever be grateful.https://supporter.acast.com/Ominous-Origins-1Our sponsor: www.morbidlybeautiful.comMerch: www.redbubble.com/people/HorrorShotsYouTube: Horror ShotsTwitch: www.twitch.tv/muskyfauxWebsite: www.horrorshots.comInstagram: ominousoriginspodTwitter: @horrorshotsprodFacebook: HorrorshotsPatreon: www.patreon.com/horrorshotsCredit: Music: https://www.purple-planet.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/Ominous-Origins-1. Or does the legend take over the reality? Buckle up! Watch "Cropsey - The Truth is Terrifying", directed by Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio.
Although, most of these urban legends have some sort of truthful origination to them, it typically only serves the purpose of making the story seem more believable. Many kids know the fears that have been created in their hearts from stories like this all too well. But, deep down, it is also known that even though it is scary…it really isn’t completely true. But what if you found out that the story that you grew up hearing, whether you ignored the warnings or your didn’t, turned out to be real? Guess what? We're back! I harassed Steph long enough that she gave in and came back to the podcast 2 weeks after having a baby! That being said, we had a pretty cute guest host this week. He's kind of a cry baby, but we love him any way. I (jessica) cover freakyass deaths, including many at amusement parks. Steph covers Cropsy aka Andre Rand. Baby Ryan just sort of cries and hiccups. Grace and Em describe the Mandan ritualistic ceremony, the Okipa, and talk about the disturbing urban legend turned real, Cropsey.
On episode 80 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Ryan shares one last listener ghost story from Angela to ring in the Halloween season and the end of the Halloween series of the show. The reality he uncovers is more terrifying than any urban legend. Zeman then transitions into a television special he created titled, "Killer Legends", in which he investigates four other deeply disturbing urban legends throughout the country and questions which came first, the urban legend or the real events? What power does storytelling have over us when it comes to reality and fantasy? Do we create the monsters in these legends? Or do they create us? It's a fascinating discussion and the perfect way to count the final days until Halloween. Guest Bio: Josh Zeman has been at the forefront of the true crime genre for the past decade. His critically acclaimed horror documentary CROPSEY, a critic’s pick with The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Roger Ebert, was called “one of the year’s best documentaries” and “one of the scariest films of the year” in 2011. Off the success of CROPSEY, Zeman created KILLER LEGENDS for NBC Universal, an anthology series that examines true crimes that have inspired our scariest urban legends. Premiering as both the #1 downloaded documentary and horror film on iTunes in July of 2014, KILLER LEGENDS has since become one of the most watched true crime documentaries on both Netflix and Hulu.
