The great Nora Ephron (think: When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle…duh!) used to say “everything is copy” — meaning that everything that happens to any of us in life is fair game to write about, dream about, and talk about… and we agree. Enter:
Audrey Skelton & Susannah Hutcheson
It's been a MINUTE, but we've been busy… like, having a baby busy (not Susannah), and going to South Africa (not Audrey). And we know you guys have been, too — so we're back with a little catch-up episode where you'll get to hear some newborn squeaks, Sus's favorite sleep gummy (Kardashian style), and Audrey's new audiobook obsession. Listen wherever you get your pods, and stay tuned for some news so soon.
We're BACK for another ask us anything episode! These are so fun because we get to hear from you guys and share all of our reeeal honest (and maybe sometimes inspiring? TBD) takes with yall. Come hear our opinions on whether Ross & Rachel were on a break, if we reached our 2022 goals/resolutions (Audrey shares an emosh journal excerpt from Jan. 2022 because of course she did lol), our go-to outfits, Sunday scaries, least favorite products we've been influenced to buy, and why life is so hard (spoiler, we don't have an answer for that one)… among so many other good ones. Come hang with us today for a gooood time!
Most ~goal-setting practices~ are way too time consuming if you ask us… One or two hours to write down all our hopes, dreams & desires for the new year? It's a no for us (like seriously, we do not have the time). Today we are sharing our own lil' goal-setting workshop that LITERALLY took us each 10 minutes to complete—but gave us sooo much clarity and direction heading into 2023. We're sharing some things we're thankful for from this year, plus the things we'd like to leave behind in 2022, as well as our personal, profesh, and relationship goals for 2023—and some fun ones like a trip we want to take, habit to try, reading goal, word of the year & more! Get your pen out and jot down your own answers to these prompts if you want to feel a little lighter going into next year! We LOVE an efficient moment to get our thoughts and goals organized & can't wait for you to join us for this one!
OK does anyone else feel like the older we get, the faster the year flies by?! What the heck. If you're looking for a little end-of-the-year review inspiration, we're rounding up some of our highs and lows of 2022 with a recap/superlatives episode! This was such a fun way to look back on all that's happened throughout the year and do a sort of audio journal of what we loved, best experiences, standout memories, learning moments & wayyyy more. Follow Susannah: @susiebhutch / susiebco.com Follow Audrey: @audskelton / audreyjoann.com Audrey's fav book: Mad Honey (runner ups: The Vanishing Half and Cribsheet) Susannah's fav book: ACOTAR series (runner up: A Woman is No Man) Audrey's favorite beauty product: Saie Slip Tint (runner up: Sensible Organic Belly Balm) Susannah's favorite beauty product: Kosas Concealer (runner up: Dae Monsoon Mask) Audrey's best item purchased: Toddler tower for kitchen (runner up: art prints from Laci Fowler & Brittany Smith Studio) Susannah's best item purchased: Custom coffee art print Audrey's fav recipe: Ambitious Kitchen cinnamon rolls (sweet) + The Defined Dish bolognese (savory) Susannah's fav recipe: Preppy Kitchen s'mores cookies (sweet) + TDD cajun chicken soup from The Comfortable Kitchen (savory)
Do you have that person on your gifting list who's *impossible* to shop for? Orrrr, maybe you just opt out of gift giving when you get stumped on what to get people? Hiiiiii, Audrey here, and that second one is ME. My family members have low-key flagged me as a gift hater and will all but apologize when sending me something in the mail, lol (but seriously, where are my fellow anti-clutter girlies?!). The thing is, I DO appreciate a meaningful gift… I'm just not so great at picking them out for others. Luckily, Susannah is literally the most thoughtful gift giver I know—she always gets her loved ones things that are practical, personal & meaningful (without spending crazy $$$ on a bunch of people in her life). I asked her all the questions I (selfishly) wanted to know about her process for picking out gifts, like how she comes up with such creative ideas that don't murder her wallet, how she shops for people who have everything they need, her thoughts on gift cards, and her go-to gift ideas that pretty much anyone would love. Plus, I'm sharing an easy formula for buying kid gifts AND we both share our top 5 things on our own holiday wishlists (that are SO us, it's laughable). If you still have holiday shopping to wrap up (pun intended
And we are back AGAIN with another in-the-fam interview — with Audrey in the hot seat this week! If this is your first time listening or you don't know Aud yet, get ready. Audrey manages to be one of those people that you could tell everything to (and want to), and is the most put-together, down-to-earth, hilarious person around. She lives in Sonoma County with her husband and son, is expecting a new bb any week now, and is a copywriter, a home chef, a wine lover, a fellow online shopping fanatic, and Sus's partner in crime in all the things. Audrey and Sus dove deep into everything from Audrey's corporate villain origin story and her #toxicera as a 21-year-old all the way to finding true peace at 31 and managing things like motherhood, marriage, and business…. and there are a few teary moments, too. We can't wait for you guys to listen! Follow Susannah: @susiebhutch / susiebco.com Follow Audrey: @audskelton / audreyjoann.com
It's us! We're back! Well, we've been here – but after a busy few weeks hosting the MOST FUN guests on the show, we're bidding November farewell with just an Aud x Sus episode… but not just any A x S ep. We're changing things up by taking turns interviewing each other so you can get to know each of us even better… And Susannah is the lucky one in the hot seat first this week! If you're new here, Susannah is a brilliant copywriter out of Dallas who is beyond witty, easygoing, and genuine— and she has perfected the art of capturing, polishing, and showcasing her clients' unique voices in a highly strategic yet approachable way. She's a BIG cycle class girly, loves her oat milk lattes, has the cutest dog named Holly, influences her friends (i.e. Audrey) to buy way too many things, can literally read a book in 2 hours, and travels more than anyone… yet doesn't visit Audrey in Northern California NEARLY enough. But we digress… Sus shared so many fun tidbits about her journey from journalist to teacher to copywriter/business owner, what she'd tell others starting their own business, her goals for the next year, tea on her dating life & so many other fun facts and stories! We hope you love this one! Let us know what you think when you listen! Follow Susannah: @susiebhutch / susiebco.com Follow Audrey: @audskelton / audreyjoann.com
What the eff happened to dinner parties? Seriously? They were a THING in our parents' day, but the art of fun, elegant dinner parties has sorrrrt of fizzled out. That is, until sister duo Hanna Flores and Lea Raymond entered the chat. The gals behind the hosting company Hauste are making throwing a killer party (small or large) easy, beautiful & exciting again… and showing the rest of us in our 20s/30s how to host with confidence. Whether you've felt like you don't have it in you to host special gatherings (like Audrey) or you're easing into your own hosting era (like Susannah), we promise, you'll feel inspired to throw a tablescape together, whip up a fav recipe (or even just some cocktails!) & create a vibe to make memories with your loved ones in your home… JUST NEVER ON PAPER PLATES K? (You'll hear allll about this hot take in the ep.
We've shared our OBSESSION with Oat Haus granola butter before on the show — and today we got to speak with the woman behind the butter, Ali Bonar! Tbh, we felt like we had a full-on therapy session/happy hour with Ali during this episode and it was THE BEST. She is such a breath of fresh air and we LOVE how open and vulnerable she is with her story and what she's learning as she leads a (badass) food company. We took away so many nuggets of wisdom about time management, boundaries, self-love, and WAY more — and we know you will, too. Tune in to hear her story of taking healing from a raging eating disorder and turning it into her superpower that now fuels the fun, playful & DELISH business that is Oat Haus. We don't think there's a better combo than wine and words, so having Kaitlyn Parker of Copy Uncorked on the pod today is everything. The copywriter and founder behind wine-inspired marketing agency Copy Uncorked helps modern brands and creative entrepreneurs perfect their messaging, and we're both BIG fans of how she's scaled and grown her business. Kaitlyn is endlessly inspiring, creative, and smart about how she runs and markets her business — and we love that she does it in a way that honors her lifestyle and personal goals (rather than letting outside voices/pressure dictate her direction, which is so easy to let happen!). If you're starting or growing a business, this episode is for you because she gave away so many amazing nuggets about growth, productivity, balance, and hiring. She is a breath of fresh air and we honestly could've talked to her for hours! Pour a glass of cab (or grab her fav coffee, a vanilla oat milk latte) and tune into this fun episode! If you've ever gotten the *ick* feeling from having to promote yourself/your business, you'll want to hit play on today's episode with Jen Olmstead. We sat down with the amazingly talented website designer, marketer, and co-founder of TONIC (a fully customizable website template shop for modern, stylish creatives) to talk about her different approach to marketing, messaging, and launching. (Hint: if you're just doing something because you “feel like you should,” there's a better way!) And she shares her evolution from being a self-proclaimed hater of traditional marketing to now being an expert educator AND practitioner of it. (Just peep the @tonicsiteshop IG page to see what we mean.) She also shared an epic analogy for juggling the many balls we take with us as women, business owners, wives, moms, friends, and/or creatives thaaat sort of changed our lives??? (And Audrey immediately hired Jen as her new therapist thereafter.) Get the BEST life advice, marketing tips & also probably the urge to re-watch New Girl after listening to today's ep! Happy SPOOOOKY Halloween! As true crime and scary story lovers, we thought it would be fun to each share one of our favorite creepy tales this Hallo-week! Audrey tells the story of someone being watched in their room without knowing it (that's gonna be a no from us), and Susannah takes us through the haunted history of one of Dallas's most famous historic hotels, The Adolphus. We also share some of our not-so-smart choices (ok, Audrey more than Susannah here) in our high school years that could've led to ~spooky~ outcomes, but thankfully did not. They say don't meet your heroes, but gotta say, we did and… 10/10 recommend! We were not-so-low-key beside ourselves to welcome Alex Snodgrass of @thedefineddish onto the pod this week and it… was… everything?? We really tried to keep our fangirling at a minimum y'all, but for some background, both of us cook Alex's recipes (and text each other about them relentlessly) on a WEEKLY basis. No exaggeration. If you're new to her stuff, Alex is a 2x NYT bestselling cookbook author, food blogger, and @getsidedish creator (a new line of *healthy* yet flavorful sauces and dips). And, an all-around doll. She's built a food empire yet remains so down-to-earth, genuinely friendly, and connected to her family, friends, and values… which is sort of a rarity in the entrepreneurship/influencer world. We got the “dish” on her new business, how she copes with anxiety as a creator, and some news about a third (!!!) cookbook. Whether you love to cook or it's not really your thing, we have a feeling this convo will have you inspired to try something new & fun in the kitchen this week. (May we recommend her enchiladas con carne from her first book?) We can't wait for you to listen! What is a *nonnegotiable* in your life for feeling your absolute best, inside and out? Daily fresh air? Meditation? A Trader Joe's dark chocolate peanut butter cup (or 14) to end the day? (K, maybe that's just us.) Today, we're sharing 5 of our own nonnegotiables that make a noticeable difference in our lives, how we operate, our energy, mood, and overall way of ✨being✨. For real, this is one of our FAVORITE episodes to date, and not because these things are always easy to prioritize (or talk about, for that matter). In fact, we realized some of the most challenging ones are also the most impactful. Funny how that works! And of course, we have a few fringe discussions, like Susannah's woes with Hinge and Audrey peeing her pants. Good times! See you on the pod.
We're coming back from our week off with a bang… aka a 1.5 hour episode all about one of our favorite topics: TRAVEL ✈️. (Hope you missed us bc hiiiiii!
When we decided to do a no-buy month together, we didn't really expect some of the impacts. We just wanted to save some money after both of our spending habits had gotten a little ✨relaxed✨, but we didn't anticipate things like feeling our mental health take a little hit, dealing with boredom, and working through what it feels like to practice patience & not experience immediate gratification. (#millennialproblems, WE KNOW.) Today's episode dives into all things no-spend month: the hardest parts, what was easier than expected, what we cheated with and bought, what we waited to buy (and are glad we did), how much $ we each saved, and what we're glad we DIDN'T buy (hint: Susannah's is a real, living animal
If you've ever felt like you couldn't be consistent with your health & wellness goals, we're riiiiight there with you. It's a never-ending battle to feel like you WANT to be healthy and feel good in your skin, but you can't seem to stay on top of the things you think and know you *should* be doing . (speaking from experience x2 over here). Josie Santi joined us on the pod this week, and no exaggeration, she freaking blew our minds… multiple times. Josie is a certified holistic health coach and founder of Wellness By Josie, and helps women use food as medicine to improve their energy, shine from the inside out, and live their actual, true purpose. AKA, she manages to live her life to the fullest while also inspiring people to eat whole foods *without* weird restrictions and problematic messaging. (We
We are so damn impressed by the amount of things Kristen Hollingshaus Seninger (@hauskris on IG/TikTok) fits into her day. She works in marketing for Sephora full-time, and has also built a badass TikTok following by sharing simple things like her home, daily routine, and oddly mesmerizing WFH set-up. (It includes a walking pad and lots of Diet Coke with pebble ice, both of which you may or may not be influenced to try after this episode!) From her darling apartment in San Francisco to her viral “day in the life” videos, we talked about all things becoming an influencer and balancing her creative passions with her 9-5. She is an absolute doll, and we know you'll love this conversation as much as we did! (Side note: Sus and Audrey were both ~influenced~ to become TikTok girlies after this chat, lol.) Plus, Audrey shared some BIG news at the top of the episode, and Susannah gives us all the permission we need to keep our oat milk latte addiction going strong.
We could have talked with @moneywithkatie for another 14 hours but we all have jobs and lives, so this 45 minute conversation will have to suffice for now. Katie joined us to talk all about her rise from the “typical” disappointed corporate millennial who was barely scraping by, to a 3-job hustler, to a personal finance content creation MOGUL (we said it, not her). She makes boring finance topics relatable and interesting (which is low-key the Lord's work), and she's making wealth building not only more accessible to everyone, but also taking on the patriarchy at the same time. Hero status. We learned so much in this convo and know you'll take away some fascinating tidbits, too! Tune in now!
Sooo… maybe we were feeling a little salty when we recorded this show (
Reality check: 2022 is MORE than halfway gone and that's freaking us out. We sat down to review the first half of the year because — tbh — if we DON'T take the intentional time to see what we've gone through, accomplished, and learned, it's way too easy to breeze through the rest of the year without acknowledging our growth and setbacks. Not to get all ~self-improvement~ on y'all, but if you haven't tried this and just sat down to think/write/talk about what you learned the first half of the year, we highly recommend because it is EYE opening… to say the least. Lo and behold, a lesson or two of ours overlapped one another (big shocker there), aaaand we realized we're actually doing pretty okay this year! *whew* See what surprising things we've learned (maybe you've learned 1 or 2 of these along with us)... and also hear about an update on the Everything is Copy no-buy month, the adventure of removing 20+ splinters from Audrey's toddler's feet
If you've evvveeer had a tiny inkling of an idea to start a business but have NO clue where to start, today's episode with Mady Maio is for you! She's the cohost of the Okay Sis podcast and cofounder of the Camber app, a space where you can share and find travel recommendations from friends and people you trust (um… genius?!). She's literally a wealth of knowledge for starting your own business (which BTW, she credits much of her success with her start-up to her sister Scout, the other cohost of Okay Sis) from branding to fundraising to figuring out all the new and unknown obstacles that come with running a business. It's SUCH a great convo that we can't wait for you to hear!
Welcome to the No Chill Zone! Our energy in today's episode is truly unmatched because (… wait for it) Susannah visited Audrey and they recorded in person, post-wine tasting
We're getting real about body image in today's intro before jumping into our top 10 favorite IG (slash TikTok) accounts of all time. If your feed has felt a little stale lately
Y'all, life's too short to do the same damn thing every single day. Work, errands, meals, taking care of your fam — whatever's part of your daily routine can tend to get a bit mundane after a while. For all of us. (It's not just you!) But, obviously we all have necessary responsibilities to tend to in our day-to-day lives… So, how can we make them feel a little better? A little less stale or boring? We wanted to share 11 small, cheap (most of them free, actually!), low-time-commitment ways to romanticize your life — aka, how to add more spice to your daily grind and make even the most *normal* days feel more FUN. And light. And joyful. Because you deserve a pinch more spiciness everyday; don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
It doesn't matter what you do for a living, we all have to use written words in our day-to-day lives to communicate with others! Whether it's emails, social media posts, or putting together your own website copy, you probably write more than you even realize. Today, we want to help you make those words as effective and strong as possible by sharing our top 10 tips for becoming a better writer (mhmm, even if you don't consider yourself a writer or creative)! You might be shocked how many of these you can use in your everyday life to communicate better and easily upgrade your writing to be more entertaining and interesting. Plus, hear all about Audrey's new personality trait and Susannah's beef with a certain workout attire brand.
Today's show is not an easy one to share, but that's exactly why we thought it was important to talk about. Audrey is sharing the sad and scary realities of having a territorial dog with a little one in her home, and the hard decision her family had to make recently in an effort to protect everyone. If you have kiddos or a pet that feels like family, you'll feel this ep a deep level. Plus, Sus kicks it off on a much lighter note for our book-loving listeners by sharing her top summer book recs that you need to add to your reading list or download for your next vacation!
Woooo — do we have a treat for you today! (Well, depending on your definition of “treat,” that is.) Today we're each sharing a client horror story, one that's infuriating and the other that's humiliating in the most hilarious way. Sus shares how a client recently used contract kung fu to restrict her from getting paid for doing beyond the scope of work (*BIG sigh*), while Audrey shares a tale about the time she meant to share a sexy-ish DM to her husband that accidentally went to a client. #whoops We'd love to hear your work/client horror stories to share them on a future ep of Everything is Copy! The crazier the better, but anything goes… clearly. Send us your stories on Instagram DM's @everythingiscopypod or email them to everythingiscopypodcast@gmail.com!
We love an entrepreneurial episode! Today we're candidly sharing allll our best tips and advice if you've ever considered getting into copywriting or another service or creative entrepreneurial business (like graphic design, photography, web design, etc.)! We each started our copywriting careers a few years ago and have learned a thing or two (or 27) about what to do, and more importantly, what NOT to do when getting into the service-entrepreneurial space. From how much to charge, where to find clients, how to know who to work with, and what to expect early on… we're sharing all the things. Plus, Audrey tried something that most of us already know and love (and spoiler, she's obsessed too) and Sus shares some important resources and insights on gun control that we all need to be aware of.
Everyone has them, but that doesn't mean they're ANY fun to deal with… Today we're talking about getting out of funks. Whether you're exhausted and at the end of your rope, moody and hormonal, frustrated about a certain situation, or you don't know WHAT might be making you feel some type of way, we get it and have BEEN there, too, sister. Both of us have had our fair share of funky times, so we're shedding some light on what we do when we feel a little more than blue. Spoiler: Sometimes the best thing is simply noticing, acknowledging, and talking about it… and then treating yourself to some ice cream or a Housewives binge. #truth. Tune in for more ways to work your way out of your next funk! PS, is “funk” sounding like THE weirdest word ever to anyone else at the end of this episode?! Because, samesies. (Note: This episode is not mental health advice; if you are experiencing signs of depression, anxiety, or another mental health issue, please see your doctor.)
Allow us to introduce one of the only people who talks about “living a more intentional life” and DOESN'T make us roll our eyes: Kate Eskuri! Kate is a registered nurse with a doctorate degree in integrative and holistic health, and she's also the creator of The Foundation Blog, a space dedicated to simplifying healthy living backed by science and research (with a modern twist). We talked with her about how she *realistically* incorporates mindfulness, wellness, and self-care into her (busy) life, how she's getting ready for the changes that come with motherhood, plus you KNOW we had to ask for her loving/learning/it's a no for the week! This convo was so much fun, and Kate is so dang relatable and funny… we can't wait for you to listen! (Plus, you know we can't go on a zillion tangents — so you'll get insights into Susannah's new fave show about Mormons and murder, and Aud talks about the annoying moral superiority of people who ~don't use IG filters~) Follow us: @everythingiscopypodcast Follow Kate: @kate.eskuri www.thefoundationblog.com
You're busy, trust us, WE get it. As two copywriters with a lot on our to-do lists (personally and professionally), we've had to find ways to manage our time while working from home and managing multiple clients. Today we're sharing exactly how we break down our workdays, the time management tools we use and love, and how we make time for things OUTSIDE of work that matter. And we're talking about Susannah's favorite new meditation app, the confusion of copywriting vs. copyright (law), adult acne, family boundaries, and SO much more… obvi. Tune in and don't forget to rate, review & subscribe for new episodes every Wednesday!
We've learned a LOT in the last few years as entrepreneurs running our own copywriting businesses — about ourselves, overcoming fears, preferred working styles, closing certain doors, and so much more. Today we're sharing many of our BIGGEST lessons as entrepreneurs (and some things we're continuing to re-learn again and again… like our #authorityissues of course). Plus, we're sharing a life realization that Audrey came to thanks to grass (like, the kind in your yard), Susannah's varied taste in men, travel mishaps, and the magic of foot spas. As usual, we're all over the place
We're back and talking about a JUICY topic today: new client red flags.
Let's talk about Q1 – umm, we were *sorta* exhausted (read: entirely depleted) after it ended, tbh. In today's episode, we go deep into recapping what the first quarter of 2022 looked like for each of us, both in our copywriting businesses & our personal lives — plus the lessons we learned through Q1 and what we want to do differently throughout the rest of the year. (Spoiler: we both feel like our business structures could use a little tune-up, AND we talk about what it's like to separate client relationships from friendships when our clients actually do… feel like… friends?) Plus, we dig into why it's so freaking hard to let go of our expectations about others, the personal growth books that we think suck, and share Susannah's recent laundry obsession (lol). Listen now!
Welcome to the very first episode of Everything is Copy! We're Audrey and Susannah, two copywriters & business owners who live many states apart, but voice-text each other about all things business + life *baaaasically* all day every day — and we want to invite you into our conversations about, well… everything! In this inaugural ep, we're sharing the story about how we met at a magazine we worked for years ago, how we each went from journalism majors to independent copywriters, how we're ~kind of~ the same person, what the name of our show means, and where we hope to take it! In future episodes, we're going to cover topics that have to do with copywriting, freelancing, and running a small business, but we're also going to talk about broader things like relationships, marriage, dating, motherhood, friendships, travel, etc… because we believe life is multifaceted and intertwined, and we can't talk about business without talking about the rest of our lives. Whether you're also a writer, freelancer, small or creative business owner, or just a woman in your 20s or 30s trying to find your way, live a fulfilling life & build a meaningful career (even if it goes against the grain)… we're so glad you're here. New episodes are released every Wednesday — subscribe so you don't miss out!
Well, hi! Welcome to Everything is Copy. We can't wait to have you along for the ride, and are so honored that you're here.
