Failure is only negative if you don’t learn from it Fail Forward is the weekly podcast hosted by entrepreneur and family man Henri Ghijben. In each episode you’ll hear from Henri and guests as they share real-life experiences of positives born from failure, reflections on the lessons learned from ‘losing it all, and what fuels Henri’s desire to help others overcome personal and business challenges in order to create the lives they want to live. Who is Henri Ghijben? Growing up in Bury St Edmunds, Henri’s first memorable experience of failure left him with the lasting ability to never get lost. It proved to be the first of many times Henri would fail forward. But it wasn’t until he faced losing his home, business and possibly even his family, that he realised the truth. Failure is only negative if you don’t learn from it. Against the odds, Henri has rebuilt from rock bottom. He’s now on a mission to help others avoid making the same mistakes he did, to help those facing failure see that there is a way back and that by failing forward they can enjoy success again. Ever thankful for the love and support of his family, the loyalty of his team and the help of business owners who helped him when the chips were down, Henri now lives in Southampton where he runs HRG Tree Surgeons, has growing property management and investment businesses and runs mentoring programmes for business owners, entrepreneurs and directors who are on their own growth journeys.

If you were asked what would you do differently, with everything you've learnt in business what would it be? This is exactly what I cover in this episode! For me the No 1 thing is learning. I buried my head for 10 years but I'm making up for it now. Work on yourself like you work on your business. “The more you learn, the more you earn”. Secondly its all about mindset. We are our own worst enemy, what we tell ourselves we believe. And finally, always make sure you surround yourself with the right people. Likeminded people will help you hit your goals! I'd love to hear what you would do if you had your time again? Respect the time you have. You can keep busy with many important things, but that doesn't mean they are the best things for you. In this episode I talk about moving yourself away from the £10 tasks in your business and onto the £1000 tasks. Always ask yourself “Is this the best use of my time?” Most people when asked what they want to earn say they want to “earn £10k a month and work a 30 hour week”. That means an hourly rate of £83.33. So when you're doing a £10 task ask yourself, is this the best use of my time? People can't get out of their head to trust someone, hear how Henri instills trust from the get go. Always trust first. Inspire them to do the right thing. So if you're struggling with the menial tasks, the first thing you can do today is get someone to do all your admin. Your time is precious! Use it wisely in your business. Have a listen and - as always - I'd love to hear your thoughts. Life is a series of decisions, and in Episode 112 of the Fail Forward Podcast, I explore the art of decision making. Listen as I uncover what makes the basis for good decision making, starting with the importance of removing emotion from the equation and getting into a neutral state, where you can approach decisions more objectively. Additionally, the significance of data driven decisions must not be ignored and recognising the power of knowledge gained through education and mentorship. Finally, the benefit of stepping away from the situation to gain perspective. Don't make decisions after 6pm, after a bad night's sleep and on an empty stomach! Set yourself up for the best decision. And remember not making one, is still a decision. Tune in now and learn how to set yourself up for success in decision making. Chris's entrepreneurial journey began with leaving college at 16 and landing a job at HSBC's call centre where he discovered his knack for sales. A short stint as a stockbroker taught him that money doesn't buy happiness. Chris then found himself leading a team as manager of Natwest bank with little credibility at just 18 years of age, trying to persuade people who had been in the business for 30 years to listen to him. Find out how did it. With a £10k loan from his struggling parents and spotting the potential of Facebook ads, he launched his own mortgage business, fuelled by a determination to repay them. Chris is a serial entrepreneur and has owned many businesses, and today, he continues to run The Mortgage Hut, and one of Southampton's top restaurants, Figurati. Reflecting on his journey, he emphasises perseverance, effective communication, and leading by example. The future for Chris is not about stepping away entirely, but finding harmony between work and leisure, preferrable in the sun! Key takeaways include mastering marketing, communication skills, defining your work ethic and embracing failure as a catalyst for growth. No one gives a sh*t about you! What they care about is how your product or service can solve their problem now. In this episode I talk about dropping the jargon. Stop saying, “we do this, we do that, we've got this kit, the latest technology.” People don't give a sh*t. They just care about what you can do for them! Drop the features and benefits. What problems do you actually solve? Back in the day I would sell to anyone who would buy from me. But working with mentors, I now know who my ideal client is so I can talk to them directly through everything we do. And it draws people in. Who then eventually buy. In Episode 109 of the Fail Forward Podcast, I explore the analogy of success being a summitless mountain. Reflecting on an outdoor retreat experience led by CEO Adventurer, John Beamson last year, I draw parallels between facing challenges in the Scottish mountains and navigating business hurdles. I share insights on the importance of appreciating the journey, embracing setbacks as part of the process, and finding beauty in the progress made. John told us to turn around and look back, and it was the most beautiful view, we had achieved so much. And this is what we do in business, we are so focused on the next thing we don't appreciate how far we have come. So, let's just enjoy this moment. Recognise that sometimes we must go back in order to go forward. But always look back and see the beauty of what you've created. Then the next summit will appear. But most of all enjoy the journey! Sales! It's the one thing people fear the most. In Episode 108 of the Fail Forward Podcast, I tackle the essential skill that every business must master: sales. It's all about output, the more you do the more you will create. I draw the distinction that marketing is NOT sales. Marketing lays the groundwork by attracting prospects, but sales close the deals and drive revenue. We've all experienced the clucky salesman who is trying to sell you something you don't want or need. The first thing to get across is we are not like those sales people! We need to respect each other's space and time. Stop beating around the bush - people hate small talk! Stop thinking you are taking up their time, you need to believe that you are going to help your customer and provide value for the problem they face. Tune in now and start mastering the art of sales! In this episode I talk about burnout - how it affects us and our business. Working with 43 business owners in the tree surgery mastermind I now deal with so many who are in burnout. But what is burnout? It's when you put all your effort into your life and your business and you end up frazzled, overwhelmed, left with no energy, you feel numb and neutral about everything. It's awful. So how can we avoid it when we are always on the go? Having gone through 3 of the toughest months since returning to work after my stroke, I share 8 tips with you in this episode. These are the things that I swear by and am currently doing myself. Whether you're currently experiencing burnout or seeking proactive measures, this episode offers valuable insights and actionable advice that will help restore balance. In this episode, I interview Andy Taylor, who shares his journey from partnering with his dad's fencing business to selling it for seven figures, and then setting up other businesses, offering valuable insights along the way. Andy's entry into a family business marked the beginning of relationship dynamics and growth hurdles. He emphasises the importance of maintaining a balance between familial trust and professional conduct. Scaling the business posed challenges in establishing efficient systems and processes. However, personal growth emerged as a cornerstone of Andy's journey, with a focus on continuous self improvement through meditation and exercise. He candidly shares his struggle with negative self talk and depression, highlighting the power of seeking support and being open. Eventually, the process of selling the business proved to be a difficult and stressful experience for Andy. It didn't go to plan, and in the essence of the podcast Andy learnt from these mistakes and has now set up a training school to help others who are embarking on selling a business. Hot off the press – Dave Brailsford joins Manchester United. Fear not, you're still in the right podcast! Dave Brailsford, the mastermind behind Team Sky, transformed our nation from one of the worst cycling nations to one of the best. His secret? Marginal gains. Dave's mission was simple: improve each aspect of the process by 1%. Bike frame, wheels, brakes, rider, sleep, food, clothes—nothing escaped scrutiny. And it worked, creating a powerful momentum. This philosophy is crucial for anyone in their job, business, or day-to-day life. When striving for improvement, break it down. Big problems can be overwhelming, leading to procrastination and inaction. Break it into sections, focus on small improvements, and watch the compound effect take hold. What marginal gains could transform your business? I'm eager to hear your thoughts. All the best, Henri #MarginalGains #NeverGiveUp #Entrepreneur
How much time do you lose blaming others or getting angry? I used to get so angry when things would go wrong. I'd get home and rant at my poor wife Sarah. It was all such a big drama! I wasted SO much energy all the time. This episode is about being accountable. I am where I am today because of my own actions and things that I have done. As soon as I stopped blaming other people and looked within and said, “what do I need to do?” things changed. It's about putting your ego aside. We waste so much energy getting angry over things we have no control over. Work on yourself, what do you need to do? Stop wasting time. Focus that energy on how to build yourself and your business. We have such a limited amount every day, use it towards something worthwhile. Anger is actually a great emotion when it can be channelled to your advantage. But as always, what do you think? All the best, Henri #Anger #NeverGiveUp #Entrepreneur #BlameGame
Ever been labelled as… An anxious person? A negative person? A depressed person? That you've imposter syndrome? Yes? Then this podcast episode is for you! I've felt all those feelings too. That I am winging it, out my comfort zone, stressed and sad. But just because you feel a certain way, it does not define you. When I started this podcast, I really felt imposter syndrome, but I did not let this define me, I just recognised that I felt it in certain moments. The problem is that when we give ourselves a label, we start to believe in them. We all have feelings, and they are either positive or negative. Its about using that sadness to find happiness. For example, what do you need to do to change your future which will make your past better? Your self-talk will define who you are and how you show up. Don't magnify the negativity! This podcast is about recognising that “sometimes” in a moment you will have those feelings – its normal, it's part of life – but does not need to define you. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode? All the best, Henri #Failure #NeverGiveUp #Entrepreneur
Do you recall, I did a past episode on finding your winning formula? What do you need to do to be the best business owner, husband, dad, friend and how do you turn up as your best self? This episode focuses on what you need to do to create it. Don't you find routine goes out the window at Christmas? In those two weeks you lose your rhythm, wake up at no set time, forget what day of the week it is. I found last Christmas I was a bit lost because of this. I got into a negative mindset, then I suddenly realised I had got out of a routine. The people who are disciplined and have a routine are consistent for their families and their business success. But how do you do this? You need to be selfish to be selfless! You can't do it all the time but the people who create success are those who still turn up even though they can't be bothered. They push through. It takes 90 days to create a new habit. The first 30 days you're motivated, but the tough part is between 30-60 days. How do you get through that bit? Don't accept the routine that you've got, work out what you want that makes you feel good, keeps you focused and allows you to turn up as your best. Even if that involves trial and error. Move it from a chore to a habit in 90 days. Turn good intention into habit in just 90 days. Do you agree, have you managed to do this? I'd love to hear your thoughts! All the best, Henri #Failure #NeverGiveUp #Entrepreneur

I left school with no exams, just this unconventional award at the school prom, “most likely to go to prison award”. My mum was so proud. This episode delves into the heart of the narrative of this whole podcast — the recognition that failure is part of the journey towards success. Drawing from my experiences of business setbacks and overcoming drug addiction, I explore the concept of reinvention. Breaking free from the cycle of habits, stepping out of comfort zones all prompt the need for change. I went through about a dozen counsellors for my drug addiction and the last one clicked with me he simply asked, “who do I want to be in 5 years” and he helped me set the intention for this new direction. Yes, you are going to have to deal with difficult things, we can blame other people, our situation, external factors and become the victim. But it's all about acknowledging the value of difficult times, and never giving up. Dark times are part of the process. As always, let me know what you think. All the best, Henri #Failure #NeverGiveUp #Entrepreneur
If you've recently been questioning, 'How do I charge less?' maybe now is the time to ask yourself, 'How do I charge more?' Dive into the realities of business finance in Episode 98, where I share my personal journey through the challenges of running a low-margin business. Money in the bank doesn't always mean profit, especially in sectors like tree surgery. We'll explore the traps of competing on price, the importance of distinguishing between cash flow and revenue, and why being the cheapest often leads to more stress. Learn the value of focusing on your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) and delivering more value, rather than cutting prices. Understand the significant impact of effective sales and marketing, and why moving away from the lowest price can lead to a smoother, more successful business operation. The race to the bottom is never going to create success for anybody unless you're a supermarket! A crucial listen for anyone navigating the complex waters of business finance. As always, let me know what you think. All the best, Henri.
In this episode I delve into the challenging but common experience of encountering trolls and negative feedback online. Something I experienced first hand, and still do, but I have learned to handle criticism, whether from strangers, or even friends and family in my case, and turn it to an advantage. If I listened to the trolls I would not be in this position: position No 2 in the Entrepreneur Apple Podcast, top 10 in business and within the Top 50 podcast in USA for Business and Entrepreneurship. If you are trolled, most people's immediate response is to retort and defend. I know I did to begin. It's a pure fight or flight response. But I shifted initial defensive reactions to responding rationally and with integrity. The fact is they are only trolling you because you are making them feel uncomfortable about what they are doing in their life. You will face imposter syndrome head on and question yourself as you become more visible on platforms like social media and podcasting. But I encourage you all to step outside of your comfort zone. Bizarrely, the unexpected advantage of trolls in increasing the visibility of your content due to the way social media algorithms work. So, in a way, each troll contributes to spreading your message further. Thanks trolls! My message is clear: don't be deterred by trolls, when you are trolled it's a sign you've made it! So - just keep on keeping on. All the best, Henri.
In this latest episode of the Fail Forward Podcast, I ask are you unknowingly sitting upon a goldmine? After losing my tree surgery business, I initially believed that my industry was one of the hardest. But as I rebuilt the business, I realised I had always been sitting on my own goldmine. Key Insights from My Experience: Diversification of Income: I learned the hard way the importance of having multiple income streams. Uncovering the Hidden 'Goldmine': Inspired by Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich," I share the story of a gold miner who finds gold by merely changing his direction in the mine. This taught me to look closer within my current industry, recognising its potential rather than constantly seeking new ventures. Focus Over Expansion: Initially, I expanded to nine revenue streams but soon realised the importance of focus. I scaled back to concentrate on three core businesses, understanding that spreading myself too thin diluted my efforts. Investing vs. Spending: I emphasise the significant difference between spending money and investing it wisely. I suggest considering various investment opportunities like stocks, crypto, property, watches, and artwork. Concentrating Efforts for Success: The episode is a call to action for listeners to stop being distracted by every new opportunity and instead, focus on maximising the potential of their current business. It's about finding and nurturing the one 'goldmine' you already have. I hope this episode inspires you to look within your current ventures for hidden opportunities. Let me know what you think? In this episode of the Fail Forward Podcast, I take a deep dive into the role of workplace culture, reflecting on my own journey with two invaluable team members, Sophie Rogers and Mike Netley. This episode is dedicated to them! Twelve years ago, when Mike started, it was just me, Mike, a van and a chipper. Sophie joined us nine years later. From those early days, my goal was always to create a safe and welcoming place to work, a place that genuinely looked after its people. This episode really homes in on the importance of thinking about how we, as business owners, look after our staff. Whether you already have a team or are planning to build one, this is a crucial aspect. The commitment from a well-cared-for team is tangible - they show up, they want the business to succeed, and they feel heard. It's about avoiding a revolving door of staff, where people leave due to confusion and lack of commitment. People don't leave bad jobs; they leave bad bosses! Looking after your team isn't just the right thing to do from a human perspective; it also positively affects your business's top line. When I was in the trenches years ago Mike and Sophie hung around. When I had my stroke, they stepped up and gave me the opportunity to take the time off. Without these people my life would be chaos. I hope this episode inspires you to reflect on your workplace culture and how you can nurture a team that is as committed to your success as you are. And finally, a huge thank you to Sophie and Mike for always being there. Episode 94 of the Fail Forward podcast delves into the crucial question: 'Why invest in a business mentor?' The episode explores the two paths' business owners can take—paying in time or paying in money. Henri emphasises the pitfalls of relying solely on free resources and fumbling your way through endless mistakes to get to your goal in 10 years (if you're lucky that is). Or the impact of investing in mentors who have done it, learnt the lessons, and can now advise you against them so you can get you your goal in half the time. Henri recognises it can be a minefield in finding the right mentor, it can be like the “Wild West”. There are two spectrums, those coaching others who have just done a year's training themselves, and those who are so successful with heaps of experience that they have forgotten what it was like in the early days or running a business. But one thing is for sure, all successful businesses that Henri sees in the property world and tree surgery world are all being mentored by someone. Even Elon Musk and Richard Branson have mentors, if they have why wouldn't you? It is never too late. Find someone who has walked your path and work with them to accelerate growth in your business. Remember the best insights come from failures! Hope you like this episode, drop me a DM with your comments. Henri. This episode is all about ditching excuses and taking charge. I share the common reasons for not getting things done, like blaming past circumstances, the lucky fortunes of others and not having time. I challenge you to check how much time you spend on distractions like social media (hint: you do have time). Success is in your hands, so hold yourself accountable. Skipping work today leads to a habit of not showing up. I encourage waking up with a positive mindset every day and building the life you want. Excuses just get in the way. So, you want to grow your business? Focus on the important tasks: Focus on the high-income generation tasks Stop getting involved in jobs you employ people to do Post on social media Check your finances Call customers who have contacted you in the past month – you'll have 5 customers right there Stop making excuses and filling your day with small tasks. It's avoiding the big task that will make the most difference. Have a listen and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Take care, everyone. This one is personal—it's my first recording since experiencing a light stroke on October 7th. During those three days in the hospital, I had some serious reflections. After my initial scan, they said I had something wrong with my head, I immediately thought I had a brain tumour. I seriously questioned my life and bargained for more years, for my kids' sake. In this episode, I delve into filling your diary with purpose and learning to say no. The doctors told me to take it easy for the next 8-12 weeks, no work. My team are amazing, they managed things while I took a step back. I then realised how busy my life had become. Enjoyable, but busy with ‘things', things that were not part of the plan. So, I cancelled everything. It made me question how we say yes to so many things that are just not serving us. What about you? What are you doing right now that isn't serving you? Look at your schedule for the next two weeks. Ask yourself: Is this necessary? How does it serve me, my business, my family? It's actually quite simple, create a plan for the next 3, 5, 10 years and stop anything not moving you towards this. Life is not as short as we sometimes think. How much time are we wasting? If time is your excuse, check your phone's social media usage. Here is your answer! You do have time. My business partner, Jay Allen, says 54% of businesses fail due to a lack of a business plan. I didn't have one for years. I've now changed that. A huge thank you to everyone who reached out during this time. Your messages mean a lot to me, thank you. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode I talk to Chris Hawkins, the early morning DJ and "How to DJ" podcast host as he shares his journey into radio. Stemming from his early days work experience at BBC Radio Shropshire where he kept his badge and just kept turning up and making tea, to his current role at BBC 6 Music. A true enthusiast of the medium, Chris emphasises the importance of dedication in the world of radio – noting it's the 10,000 hours that it takes to get you noticed. It's a full-time job as he gets sent 200 songs a week to listen to “you don't want to miss the next Coldplay” he says. Beyond his day job, Chris delves into the podcasting world with "How to DJ," offering listeners an intimate look into the life stories, inspirations, and misadventures of DJs, blending anecdotes from famous and lesser-known names. With insights into curating radio shows and club sets. A must listen for all music enthusiasts and wannabe DJ's. Chris is also an advocate for open conversations about mental health, something close to my heart, and the unifying power of music through his role as an ambassador for Nordoff and Robbins Music Therapy. He cites young artist Hack Baker who very openly talked about his own mental health on the show, the outpouring was huge, and people still talk about that show says Chris. And of course, its no secret that the drink and drug underworld is prevalent in this industry and “some fall victim” including DJ Barry Ashworth, lead singer in the Dub Pistols, who talked of the highs and lows on Chris's podcast. The episode concludes with a nod to his dream collaborations and the reformation of iconic bands, “I'd love to see Talking Heads reform –at Glastonbury!” If you enjoyed listening to Chris and would like to listen to more of his “How to DJ” podcasts, click here, or join him for new music on BBC Radio 6 from 5am. Welcome to this rerun episode of the Fail Forward podcast. With me almost back to full fitness, I thought I would reshape this episode as it is become more important to me in the last few weeks than ever. If I had been working in rather than on my business without the relevant systems and processes in place, I would never have been able to take the time necessary for me to recover. So listen closely because you don't always get to chose whether you have to step back from your business, sometime life decides that for you and you have to be prepared…. OK - this is going to hurt. If you can't take two weeks off, work flexibly in terms or hours or location, or completely switch off from time to time - your business needs to change. In fact if your business can't function without you - you don't have a business, you have a job! And it's probably a very underpaid job as well… In this episode I unpick what it really means to build a commercial enterprise that works without you, how to balance ‘time in the trenches' with working on your business, and how my 4 pillars of a successful business can help you. Join me as we explore the role of coaching and mentoring in helping you transition from successful sole trader to leader of a business that works even when you don't. After all - I'm willing to bet you didn't start your business to be overworked, underpaid, stressed and anxious! Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. In the longest episode of the Fail Forward Podcast to date, I talk to Jay Allen, qualified psychologist, former social worker, medically retired Sergeant Major of the British Army, business mentor and creator of the “Add a Zero” business growth methodology. Jay shares his story of life before the British Army to life as a leading business mentor and lecturer leading fascinating research into the causes of business failure. After joining the army for a 5 year stint to clear his student debt, Jay was medically retired due to life changing injuries almost 13 years later, following a successful military career. Jay talks candidly about the impact of his injuries and the rehab that followed, how being sectioned under the Mental Health Act turned out to be a pivotal positive point in his life and his shocking experience of job hunting on Civvy Street. After 147 interviews in ten months and on the brink of financial disaster, Jay took drastic action to secure a job cutting grass at a country pile in the north, eventually catapulting Jay into the world of business where he transformed one the country's best known supermarket chains. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. In this slightly different episode, I am interviewed by Amy Rowlinson, podcaster, coach and podcasting mentor. Over the next 40 minutes, Amy asks what made me set up my own podcast, why the topic of failure and my plans for the future. The first question was an easy answer, Amy is who I have to thank for setting up my podcast. When I shared the idea of the podcast with her I said I was planning to launch it in a couple of years. Amy responded, “No, you're going to do this now because it's the best time” and she was right. From there, she helped me build this podcast and get my the message out to thousands of people. Amy has been on the podcast previously, where she spoke about how she went from being an unfulfilled employee to a purpose-led coach, mentor and podcaster. Today she helps others align their lives with their values and create exciting mid-life beginnings. She shares my passion for personal growth and has a fearless approach to embracing change. When Amy asked why the topic of failure, I took a deep dive into my story knowing I was speaking to someone who shares my belief about failing forward. As many of you know, my business failed a few years ago and I lost everything. I only got through it with support from my family and friends. It was at that point I read the book ‘Black Box Thinking' and had an epiphany moment where I realised my failure didn't have to define the rest of my life. From then on, I removed my worries about failure. I'm open to trying new things and accept that I don't need to get everything right the first time around. I truly believe this mindset helped me rebuild my business and achieve success as an entrepreneur. Amy asks my vision for the future which is to create financial freedom for my family. From there, my dream is to have freedom and money to be able to help people in need. When I was in my dark place, I went to groups and there were lots of people like me who had families, jobs, and houses and they took a couple of wrong turns and ended up on the streets. The only difference was that they didn't have support from their loved ones. I'd love to start a halfway house because I think people who suffer from addiction have similar traits to entrepreneurs. I'd be helping get people off the streets and get them onto the next stage. So that's my master plan over the next few years! This episode will leave you inspired to embrace intelligent risks and open yourself up to the possibility of failure. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. I believe that having an addictive personality can be a superpower. Stay with me. Those of you who have followed me for a long time will know that I have struggled with addiction in the past. I have an addictive personality and have learnt to channel that energy into positive things like running. I can't say I particularly enjoy the activity, but nothing beats the feeling you get afterwards. In this episode I share: > An insight into what addiction is really like. > How to support people going through addiction. > How to use an addictive personality to your advantage. Listen now and ask yourself; can you be more empathetic to someone struggling with addiction? What steps can you take to help them make a positive out of a negative situation? Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. This podcast episode is an ode to my wife, the most empathetic person I know. I wasn't very good at showing empathy before I met Sarah and, if I'm totally honest, it's taken me a while to master even with her support. Before my business went under, I'd come home from a day at work feeling incredibly frustrated by mistakes people were making. After moaning to Sarah, she would often say ‘Have you asked them if they're ok?', she would explain that people often don't choose to act out. I found that when I started to ask how they were, I began to better understand their situation. From a business perspective, we all have standards that we expect our employees to adhere to. Whether it's timeliness, dressing smartly or general courtesy to others. By being empathetic, you're not saying a drop in these standards is ok. Instead, you're giving them the time and support they need to improve. In this episode I talk about a time where I learnt there can be opportunity in empathy. As much as you don't show empathy for personal gain, it often leads to more personable interactions and relationship building. Listen now and start approaching situations with an empathetic mindset. The next time someone cuts you up when you're driving or forgets common courtesies, consider what they might be in a rush for or what their situation might be. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. Are you the bottleneck in your business? If you're the main decision maker in your business, it's likely that you hold things up from time to time. It could be because you don't have the capacity, or headspace. In this episode I ask, is there anything you can do to change this and move your business forward? It could be giving yourself more free time, or having a business coach to turn to for advice. Even better? Try giving someone else the responsibility to make business decisions on your behalf. I hope you find this episode helpful, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode, I talk about the importance of building an effective team. When I started my business, I pledged myself to do whatever I could to look after my team. There are often people in business whose only priority is making money. The truth is that by looking after your team, your staff retention will go up and so will your revenue and profit. We all spend more time at work than anywhere else. When your staff come to work, they want to feel valued and part of a team. One of the steps I take to help achieve this is an anonymous quarterly survey. The survey has given me so much valuable information. As often as you ask people to be honest in conversation, you're their boss and they might inevitably choose to keep some things from you. At the end of the survey, there's a free text section where employees can leave their thoughts. This feedback can be the most challenging to read but also the most useful, the important thing is to set your ego aside and try to solve the problems that can be fixed. Join me in treating your staff how you'd like to be treated. If you want to know more about how to build an effective team, just drop me a note and I can send you the details of my latest mastermind. Have a listen and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. How often have you let what someone thinks of you stop you from being yourself? As humans, it's in our nature to want to be liked. It makes us feel good! But it's not always conducive to business. When it comes to business, you need to be able to step outside of your comfort zone. That's impossible to do if you're always worrying about what people think. In this episode, I talk about how to stop giving a f*ck about what people think. Listeners of my podcast will know there was a point in my life where I lost everything. At that time, people were talking about me and knowing that was difficult. Since I've been back on my feet, I've noticed that people still find something to talk about. I learnt to let them think what they want and to put my energy into following my dreams. Give it a try. I promise it'll serve you and your business well in the long run. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode, I speak about remaining dedicated, no matter what. Something that's reflected in fitness as it is in business is that it can take time to see improvements. When you're working hard in the gym and eating well, you expect to see that reflected in the mirror after a few months. But that doesn't always happen. In fact, it rarely does. All these things take time. Real change is made from the cumulative effect of lots of little actions, showing up on the days you don't want to and staying dedicated. You might've heard me talk about the one percent gain in the past. A perfect example of that was when Dave Brailsford took over the Sky British Cycling team. From the bike design to the wider team's approach, Dave assessed every element of the process and looked to improve it by one percent. After just 21 days, the team won the Tour de France. All you need to do is turn up and try to improve by one percent every day. That small change will make a big difference. When I first started this podcast, we struggled to get many downloads and it often felt demoralising. We kept going for 18 months and now we're getting hundreds of downloads each episode, hopefully making a difference to others by sharing my approach to life. If I'd given up after a few months because my ego was telling me I wasn't good enough, the podcast wouldn't be where it is today. My message to you in this episode is don't give up, show up every day and fail forward. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode, I talk about achieving a positive mindset. Getting yourself in the right mindset helps you turn up every day. When it comes to business, this is key as there can be days when it feels like everything is going against you. It's those days that you need to be able to break through barriers in your mind and have the tools in front of you to change your mindset. In this episode, I go through the below four things that can help you and your team achieve a positive mindset even when times are tough. > Manifestation and Goal Setting > Growth Mindset > Environment > Self Care After all, the people who really make contribute to business success are those who turn up even when business is challenging. Mindset is something we can all work on every day. It could be by doing something small such as ten minutes of manifestation, or starting a new regular self care routine. Have a listen. I'd love to hear your techniques for achieving a positive mindset and whether you use any that I've suggested in this episode. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode I talk about failure. As my podcast name suggests, this topic forms the building blocks to my content. It's clearly close to my heart, I think the reason for that is because its so closely connected to business. All you ever hear is, “80% of businesses fail in the first five years”, or “1 in 5 businesses fail in their first year”. There seems to be a new statistic every week! I take the view that this is due to a fundamental issue with the way society perceives failure. There's no doubting its a negative word. In school children are taught that they've failed if they don't pass their exams. In 2023, 32% of 16 year olds failed their GCSEs. Take a second to imagine what that installs in young people's minds at an early age. One of the biggest things we should be teaching our children is that its OK to fail because it is a part of learning. I wonder how many young people are left with a negative mindset when they leave school. They begin to let failure define them, rather than view it as something to learn from. In this episode I explain that learning from multiple failures always becomes a positive. Not learning from them will compound into something catastrophic, such as a failed business. I invite you to have a listen and challenge what we're conditioned to believe about failure. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. “Some of the most amazing things are in the places we least expect.” We all have experiences that we wouldn't try. It could be due to preconcieved ideas, either from yourself or from others, or simply that you've decided it doesn't fit with your values. I used to have negative preconceptions about people exercising on holiday. “Who on earth would exercise in the limited time they have to have to relax?” I would think. Well, on my latest holiday, I tried it. Running every day and paddleboarding gave me so much more energy to enjoy the rest of my day - it could be one for you to try too. I also recently attended a retreat with an amazing guy called John Beesom, who calls himself the CEO adventurer. He explained that he's recently set himself the goal of leaning into experiences he would usually disregard. John is currently trying yoga and meditation despite his first thoughts being that he wouldn't be suited to the experience. He's yet to tell me how he got on. But worst case? He will have learnt something new from it. Do you have anything you're against giving a go? Why not approach it with a mindset of giving it a try? In this episode, I share: > Tapping into which experiences you tend to avoid > What new experiences can bring you > How to lean into new experiences Have a listen. I'd love to hear if the points covered resonate with you, let me know if you do decide to try something new! Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast discussing how to save yourself some time. One thing that's limited in life is time. It wasn't until I lost everything that I first discovered how to be efficient with my tasks. Living in rented accommodation with mould up to the ceiling of my baby's bedroom, I knew I needed to be productive to make some money and provide a nicer home for my family. In this episode I talk about the hacks I learnt during this difficult period in my life. I hope you find these helpful too. One of the biggest concerns I have is when I hear people in the business world say things like, “If you need a job doing right, do it yourself.” Thinking that way restricts you from being able to focus on higher income generating tasks. Leveraging other people's time is a fantastic way to build more time into your day so that you can focus on what matters most. Write down who you can lean on for support. It could be staff members, virtual assistants or someone in your wider network. I also share the benefits of having a mentor. Someone who has walked the path that you want to walk. Learn from their mistakes and don't let your ego get in the way. You're not going to be best at everything straight away. The more knowledge you can soak up from others, the quicker you'll be able to implement effective systems in your own business. Being more intentional with your use of social media can give you huge amounts of time back too. It's not something I find easy to do - TikTok is my guilty pleasure! But restricting your use of it or only subscribing to channels that help you learn is a much better use of your time. Listen now and if you have any time hacks that work for you, I'd love to hear them. My inboxes are open and I'm happy to help you understand how to build in time that will move you towards your goals. In this episode I'm joined by psychotherapist, Keeley Taverner, who runs a coaching and therapy business called Key for Change. Keeley is refreshingly real. I couldn't help but be drawn in by her incredible energy when I met her and I'm confident that it will be the same for Fail Forward listeners. “When you've got nothing to lose, you're not afraid of asking.” With a USP of helping people break away from narcissistic individuals, Keeley explains that her end goal is always to help her clients unlock their potential. She explains that when you get a narcissist out of the way, more energy is available so that you can begin to follow your dreams. Breaking free from a narcissist is at the centre of Keeley's story. Growing up on a West London council estate, Keeley followed a similar path to many of her friends. She was stuck in a toxic relationship with the father of her two children and wanted to escape from an uninspiring job but felt she didn't have the qualifications to do so. Desperate for change, she turned to self-help books. Moved by a book about going back to college to get an education, Keeley decided to undertake a college access course. She followed on to complete a degree in psychology and a master's in person-centered psychotherapy. This overview makes Keeley's journey appear simple but that couldn't be further from the truth. Being from a mixed heritage, working-class background, Keeley often felt isolated during her training in a very middle-class environment. Throughout each stage of her education, Keeley found kind people who took her under their wing. She reflects on how grateful she is to them for helping her navigate new and somewhat uncomfortable spaces. As we've heard time and time again on this podcast, one of the biggest challenges in business can be a feeling of isolation. Having people around you who build you up and who you can run ideas past is important. That's something Keeley discovered during her higher education journey and when setting up her own business. A gem of advice Keeley gives in this episode is to build a trusted circle of confidants and to make the most of the advice they give. This captivating story of perseverance will leave you with a feeling of warmth and positivity. It's a perfect example that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode, I'm joined by Natalie Potts, an entrepreneur who spent 19 years climbing the corporate ladder before taking the jump to go out on her own. Today she works as a coach, mentor and strategist for business owners. “The people who are out there creating success are the ones who are taking action.” Having spent her entire career in the corporate world, Natalie imagined she would stay there for rest of her life. Her mindset changed after going to university where she realised the need to adapt. Shortly after this, Natalie was supporting members of her team through coaching qualifications when she noticed they weren't learning what they needed to. She took the steps to begin educating herself to become a coach. In this fast paced episode, Natalie explains that when it comes to business, everything starts with personal development. Knowing yourself well, how you operate and where you choose go to for support, helps you take the steps to get to where you need to be. As a coach for businesses, Natalie helps people to see that there isn't a linear path to success. And when it comes to failure, she teaches business owners to view it as an opportunity to improve. Natalie explains that confidence is an end result, the prerequisite is having the courage to take the step in furthering your knowledge and experience to become confident. This episode will open up a new way of thinking for you when it comes to how you approach business. You may be convinced to widen your circle of support or to take a new brave step with your business. If you enjoyed listening to Natalie, click here to find out more about her business. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode of the Fail Forward Podcast, I talk to Sal Kassam, a Personal Trainer (PT) who helps men over 50 get strong. Sal explained there are three reasons why he works with people in this age bracket. After passing the milestone age, his dad experienced two heart attacks and was diagnosed with cancer. Sal reflected on the change he saw in his dad during this time, going from someone he viewed as invincible to a man that was struggling. He considered the difference that diet and exercise could make in preventing health issues. Coincidentally, his first client after qualifying as a PT was a man in his 50s. His client was experiencing problems with various areas of his body and was overweight. Sal said that while many PTs would prefer an ‘easier' client, he saw this as an opportunity to make an even bigger difference to his client's life. Lastly, he highlights that the PT industry targets people in their 20s & 30s who are looking to get lean. He said, ‘When you reach 50, various health issues often rear their head and specialist help is required - that's where I fit in.' Focusing on improving strength over cardio was a conscious decision by Sal. He explains that being strong helps people interact with their environment. “If you're a dad, you need strength to pick up your kids.” “If you're a sports player, you need strength to hit the ball hard.” “If you're an older person, you need strength to be able to walk up the stairs.” Having the motivation to make changes to your health and lifestyle isn't always easy. Sal speaks candidly about motivation, explaining that it's not his job to motivate his clients outside of the gym. He finds his client's motivation often comes from understanding what they want their future to be and what it could be if they don't make a change. In true Fail Forward style, Sal's journey leads you on a fascinating journey of ups and downs. His passion for strength and making a difference to his clients is sure to leave you inspired. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. In this episode I talk to Callum Webber from Freedom Lifestyle. Throughout this insightful conversation, Callum invites young people to really think about what will bring them happiness in life. He explains how to break away from societal norms and the benefits of doing so. Having spent most of his school life watching the clock, Callum wondered whether there is more to life. Instead of following the traditional route that his family, like many others, put on a pedestal, he decided to travel and invest in himself with training. Rather than taking a traditional 9-5 job and taking on a mortgage, Callum put his money into building what he calls the Freedom Lifestyle. “Society is set up to create employees not entrepreneurs.” Callum explains that by investing in personal development and taking risks, you bring yourself out of your comfort zone and open a door to new relationships and opportunities. Like many of us, lockdown provided a moment of realisation for Callum. He had come back from Menorca to live with his nan and was despatate to continue living his life. Instead of joining his friends in drinking and playing quizzes on Zoom, he made the decision to become sober and to focus on personal development. Whether you're a young person just starting out in your career or have years' of experience, I'm confident this episode will leave you wondering, ‘How can I bring more freedom into my life?'. One aspect of freedom that Callum speaks about is not caring about what other people think. He explained that he's consistent with putting himself in uncomfortable situations and said that while some people may talk negatively about you, there will be people talking positively. He highlights that it helps you reach out to the right people and to start building your tribe. Full of energy and thought provoking, this episode will leave you in no doubt that there are things you can do to improve your mindset and bring freedom to your life. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. Regular listeners of the Fail Forward Podcast, plus members of my Tree Surgeons Mastermind will have heard me talk about time management. Have you considered how artificial intelligence (AI) could be your best tool when it comes to saving time and stimulating creativity? In this episode I'm joined by someone who has not only delved into the three pillars of AI and embraced them in his own business but who now helps others to benefit from it too - Alexis Kingsbury “You can add so much more value than your competitors can - at a fraction of the cost.” There are two ways that AI can be approached, according to Alexis. It can either be viewed as an opportunity or something scary, something that isn't for you. After some trial and error, Alexis worked out how to make AI platforms work for him and his business. He explains that when you start to use it, it's not as daunting as you might think. In fact, you're in complete control. By learning the right prompts, you can have useful content, images and video available to you in a matter of seconds. But it doesn't stop there. Alexis shares how AI outputs should be approached as a starting point, a way to prompt creative thinking or a foundation for structuring a project, rather than as a finished product. A common mistake Alexis comes across is when business owners approach AI from the perspective of, “Here's an AI tool, how can I make use of it?'. He invites listeners to reframe the question to, “In my business right now, what causes me pain? What takes time? What causes problems for my customers?”. Looking to streamline processes in his own business, Alexis found that Chat GPT is particularly efficient in creating written assets for his podcast. He explains that the style of content lends itself well to AI as it follows a structure and a particular tone of voice. “Embed AI into processes that you already regard as being valuable enough to put human time and money into them.” In just under an hour you'll gain a better understanding of the benefits of AI, along with tips on how to make it work for your business. Alexis has written a free e-book, ‘Using AI and ChatGPT' that provides exercises to help you and your team make the best use of AI in your business. Here you can identify the risks and opportunities, and get your team to understand the value AI can bring. If you enjoyed listening to Alexis, click here to connect on LinkedIn. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. In previous episodes, I've been very open about the catalyst for Fail Forward but since the podcast has been running we've gained new followers who may not have heard my story. In this episode, I'll be giving you the potted history that led to me launching the Fail Forward Podcast. If you're a new follower - I highly recommend you scrolling back to Episode 1 to hear the full story. I'll be sharing: Where my disruptive streak came from. How I grew my business. The mistakes I made. The moment I realised how bad things really were. The impact of repeatedly making small mistakes and never learning from them. How I've used those lessons to build back stronger. It's the story of how I lost my business, my home, my health and very nearly my family. I would urge anyone who's going through what I did, find people to support you. The journey wasn't easy and I don't recommend it! But I feel immensely lucky to have got through with my life, marriage, family and health intact after what I describe as the best worst year of my life. Listen to this episode and please like, share and subscribe to help me on my mission to help as many people as I can learn from my mistakes and harness the power of failing forward. Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast. If you've been listening to the Fail Forward podcast for a while, you'll have heard me talk about my mentor, Nick James. Now, it's time to hear from him first hand. In this episode, Nick shares his business experiences - the highs and the lows, plus gives you a whistle-stop tour of his somewhat unusual introduction to the world of personal development. “Reaching the top you discover it isn't the top. It's just a series of levels.” Nick's first experience of the world of personal development happened before he was even a teenager. Having spent his formative years travelling the world and following an untraditional educational path, Nick set up his first business as soon as he left university. After all, he'd studied business so what could possibly go wrong? When he failed, he quickly realised it was time to find a way to learn the kind of business knowledge you just don't get from university and set about immersing himself once more in the world of business and personal development. Fast forward to today and Nick shares his insights from a wealth of experience and knowledge gained through his successes, failures and steep learning curves whilst sharing the sage advice that; “entrepreneurship is a summitless mountain”. In just under an hour you'll hear real life stories of success, failure, ego and energy. Plus the ONE question every entrepreneur should answer. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. Business isn't always easy and it isn't always plain sailing. When things feel tough it's human nature to start to procrastinate or avoid doing things you know you need to do. Yet it's also the time you need to find the determination to push through and come out the otherside. It's OK to say no to things for a while. Or to adapt your plan and change direction. In this episode I share how I believe pushing through the tough times is what moves you towards your goals and will help you achieve “The Big Mo" as described in The Compound Effect. Just remember - diamonds are formed under pressure. Dig in, push on and you will shine. Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. “The more you take yourself out of your business, the more you'll be able to turn up as a better leader.” I get it. It's your business. You've grown it from scratch. Lost sleep over it. It feels like your baby! But you don't have to be there ALL the time in order for it to flourish. On the contrary, it'll probably thrive faster if you take some time out. Meditate. Take a lunch break. Exercise. Do your thinking somewhere else! In this episode I share why I believe the key to being successful is in allowing your brain to be more creative each day - not just once a year when you're on holiday. Listen now and ask yourself; what do you need to change in order to take more time away from the day to day? Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast. “You have to be ruthless to be successful”. Possibly the biggest lie you'll ever hear! When things go catastrophically wrong there is no shortage of people telling you where you went wrong. And if you've ever been in that situation, you've probably heard it yourself. Maybe you've even said it to someone else. Here's the truth. You CAN have a successful business and: Have good intentions. Treat people well. Strive to create lasting change. In this episode I share why I believe being a decent human being isn't a blocker to running a successful and profitable business. Listen now as I explore what I think people really mean when they say you need to be more ruthless.
