Five years ago, J. Kyle Howard hired me because he was struggling to articulate what he did and how to package it into a business. At the time, he was a former CIO trying to figure out how to turn decades of experience into something other people would understand, value, and buy. In other words, he thought he had a messaging problem. What neither of us realized was that the challenge wasn't really about messaging. As we worked together, something deeper began to emerge. Questions about identity. Questions about purpose. Questions about who he was apart from the career he had spent years building. This week, as part of my "Where Are They Now?" series on Consulting Matters, J. Kyle returns to the podcast to reflect on what happened next. And what a journey it has been. Over the past five years, he tried on different business ideas, moved across the country, went through a significant personal healing journey, and ultimately found his way back to an idea that had been trying to get his attention for more than 30 years. What I love about this conversation is that it captures something I've observed throughout my career. People often come to me because they think they need help with positioning, messaging, offers, or marketing. And sometimes they do. But for many consultants and coaches, particularly those leaving established careers to build something of their own, the real journey isn't about marketing. It's about becoming. It's about discovering who you are when the title, the role, the organization, and all the external markers of success are no longer defining you. It's about finding the courage to build a business that reflects who you actually are, rather than who you think you're supposed to be. J. Kyle's story is a powerful reminder that clarity doesn't always arrive in a straight line. Sometimes the detours are part of the path. Dr. Novien Yarber is the Senior Learning Officer at Prebys Foundation, where he helps the foundation listen, reflect, and learn from its work with community partners. Known around the office as “Dr. Novi,” he brings a rare combination of rigor, warmth, and curiosity to the practice of evaluation. Before joining Prebys, Novi served as Director of Leadership, Philanthropy, and Social Impact at the University of San Diego's Nonprofit Institute, where he led community-focused programs at the intersection of leadership and social change This Episode: What does it look like when a foundation takes a closer look at itself? In this episode, Novi and Grant reflect on what Prebys heard from grantee partners through its most recent Grantee Perception Report. The conversation explores both the affirmations and the invitations for growth, including how grantees perceive Prebys' leadership, impact, adaptability, transparency, and relationships across San Diego County. This episode offers a candid look at how a foundation makes sense of feedback, wrestles with trade-offs, and thinks about its role in community. Novi and Grant discuss one of the central tensions in place-based philanthropy: how to keep learning and responding to changing conditions while also being clear and predictable for the organizations doing the work every day. They explore what real transparency requires, why trust matters for shared learning, and how funders and grantees can build relationships strong enough to hold wins, losses, lessons, and setbacks. Key Moments: [2:02] What the Center for Effective Philanthropy is and why the report matters [10:28] Why relationships are central to place-based philanthropy [23:55] How deeper trust can support shared learning between funders and grantees [30:39] Grant reflects on adaptive leadership, values, and predictability [38:08] Novi connects transparency with accountability Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Center for Effective Philanthropy – A national nonprofit that supports more effective philanthropy through research, data, and resources for foundations and donors. Prebys Foundation – A place-based foundation working to advance purpose, opportunity, and belonging across San Diego County. Healing Through Arts and Nature – A Prebys-supported approach that expands access to arts, culture, and nature as resources for youth mental health and well-being. Take Action: Practice Transparency – Share not only what you decide, but what you are learning along the way. Being open about process can build trust, even when the answers are still evolving. Build Relationships That Can Hold Honesty – Invest in relationships where people can share what is working, what is hard, and what needs to change without fear of losing trust. Stay Open to Feedback – Treat feedback as an opportunity to grow, not as a final judgment. Listening, reflecting, and adjusting are part of building stronger organizations and communities. When Conflict Feels Unsafe: How to Stay Open-Hearted Without Abandoning Yourself Have you ever known the “right” way to communicate, but in the heat of conflict, those tools seem to disappear? In this episode of Relationship Truth: Unfiltered, Leslie sits down with psychologist, speaker, and author Dr. Kelly Flanagan to talk about what really happens inside of us when we get triggered—and how one small, sacred moment of choice can shift us from reactivity toward connection. Together, Leslie and Kelly explore why communication often breaks down within us before it breaks down between us, how to recognize when our hearts are closing, and why open-heartedness never means becoming a doormat. This conversation is especially meaningful for women navigating destructive, painful, or confusing relationships who want to grow in wisdom, courage, and Christlike strength without abandoning themselves. Key Takeaways Communication Breaks Down Inside Us First Dr. Flanagan explains that many people already have communication skills, but when they feel threatened, hurt, or misunderstood, they “close the toolbox” right when they need it most. The real work is not just learning better words—it is learning to notice what is happening inside our bodies, hearts, and nervous systems when we become triggered. That moment of awareness creates a pause. And in that pause, we begin to recover our God-given agency to choose a different response. You Can Notice When Your Heart Starts to Close Kelly describes a triggered moment as a process: the nervous system activates, the heart begins to shift into protection mode, and then we make a quick, often unconscious choice about whether to close down or stay open. Leslie connects this with the biblical wisdom of Proverbs: “Above all else, guard your heart.” Guarding your heart does not mean hardening it. It means learning when to pause, when to regulate, and when to make wise choices about what you allow in and what you release. Open-Heartedness Does Not Mean Weak Boundaries One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is the distinction between an open heart and a lack of boundaries. Dr. Flanagan reminds listeners that the condition of your heart is an inner posture, while boundaries are outer actions. An open heart does not make your boundaries weaker—it makes them wiser. For women in destructive or emotionally unsafe relationships, this is crucial. Christlike love does not require self-abandonment, enabling, or pretending harm is not happening. Calm Yourself Before You Try to Connect Conflict escalates when we try to calm ourselves by controlling someone else's behavior. Kelly uses the illustration of a furnace: when the “control board” inside us is malfunctioning, we often try to change the weather outside instead of tending to what is happening inside. Before we can connect well, we must first regulate. That may mean taking a break, breathing, praying, going to another room, or simply saying, “I'm triggered right now, and I need a little time before I can respond well.” Your Growth Is Never Wasted Leslie and Kelly offer hope for the woman who has tried everything to get her husband to communicate better, become safer, or look at himself honestly. While you cannot control another person's choices, you can still do your own work. Even if the relationship does not heal the way you hoped, God does not waste your growth. As you become more whole, wise, and grounded, you are better equipped to make faithful, courageous decisions about what comes next. Dr. Kelly Flanagan is offering listeners a free video tutorial that walks through the nine-step process from his book, The Road Less Triggered, helping you begin moving from reactivity toward connection. To receive the resource, email: drkellybonus@gmail.com You will also be temporarily subscribed to his online community, The Less Triggered Tribe, with the option to unsubscribe at any time. Friend, being triggered does not mean you are failing. It means something inside of you is asking for care, attention, and wisdom. You do not have to stay stuck in reactivity, fear, silence, or blame. With God's help, you can learn to pause, regulate, speak truth, set wise boundaries, and grow into a more whole version of yourself. You are not alone, and even in painful relationships, your healing and growth still matter.

In this live conversation, Jay sits down at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas with Matthew Hussey for an honest and refreshing discussion about modern love, dating, and relationships. Together, they unpack why dating feels so exhausting today, how we confuse chemistry with emotional chaos, and why real connection is often quieter, steadier, and healthier than we expect. Their conversation challenges the idea of “finding the one” and instead reminds us that great relationships are something we build over time through trust, consistency, and emotional maturity. From setting healthy standards to learning how to communicate your needs without fear, this episode is full of relatable insights for anyone navigating love in today’s world. Jay and Matthew also explore the importance of self-worth, emotional safety, and trusting yourself enough to walk away from relationships that no longer serve you. It’s a thoughtful reminder that love shouldn’t make you lose yourself, and that the right relationship should help you feel more like yourself than ever before. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Stop Chasing Chemistry How to Set Healthy Standards How to Communicate Your Needs Clearly How to Trust Yourself Again How to Date Without Losing Yourself How to Break Toxic Dating Patterns How to Create a Strong Relationship The right relationship will never require you to abandon yourself, shrink your needs, or constantly prove your worth. What happens when we slow down enough to really experience art? We visit a museum to discover how slow looking at art can cultivate awe, empathy, and a greater sense of connection in a distracted world.Summary: Art has the power to move us emotionally, physically, and socially—but only if we take the time to truly engage with it. As part of our Cities of Awe series, this episode of The Science of Happiness explores what happens when we slow down and really look at a piece of art. We visit the Nevada Museum of Art to look at the science and practice of slow looking—how it can deepen empathy, presence, and everyday meaning. How To Do This Practice: Choose One Piece and Commit to Staying With It: Pick a single artwork, photograph, object, or even a scene in nature. Set aside about 15 minutes and put away distractions—especially your phone. The goal is not to “figure it out,” but to stay present long enough for your experience to deepen. Spend Time Noticing the Form: For the first five minutes, focus only on what you see. Notice the shapes, textures, colors, lines, patterns, shadows, movement, or composition. Let your eyes wander slowly across the piece and observe details you might normally miss. Pay Attention to Your Emotional Response: For the next five minutes, shift inward. What feelings arise as you look? Curiosity, comfort, sadness, awe, tension, delight, nostalgia? Instead of labeling the experience as simply “I like it” or “I don't,” explore the full range of emotions and reactions that emerge. Let Your Mind Make Associations: For the last five minutes, allow the artwork to lead your thoughts elsewhere. What memories, people, places, or ideas come to mind? Does it remind you of something from your own life or spark questions about the world, history, or humanity? Follow the associations without judging them. Stay Open to Complexity and Discomfort: Some works may bring up conflicting or uncomfortable emotions. Rather than rushing past them, give yourself permission to sit with them. Today, Jay Shetty welcomes back Esther Perel to unpack a growing tension in modern relationships: in a world more connected than ever, why so many people feel deeply disconnected. Esther reframes dating struggles as something deeper than love itself, pointing to a broader loss of real-life social practice. Without the everyday interactions that once taught us how to approach, connect, and handle rejection, dating now feels like a high-stakes performance instead of a natural progression. What was once built through play, curiosity, and gradual connection has been compressed into a single moment of pressure, turning love into something overwhelming rather than something we can explore. Jay and Esther explore the illusion of connection in the digital age, where texting replaces talking and screens replace presence. Esther explains how this disembodied way of relating strips away the elements that create real intimacy, like eye contact, tone of voice, touch, and shared energy. While it can feel like we are communicating more, we are often losing depth, nuance, and emotional resonance. This shift has shaped a culture that avoids friction and discomfort, yet still feels more anxious, lonely, and exhausted. In trying to make relationships easier and more efficient, we may be losing the very experiences that give them meaning. In this episode you'll learn: How to Build Real Connection Offline How to Turn Dating Into Discovery, Not Pressure How to Be More Curious Instead of Judgmental How to Create Attraction Through Presence Not Perfection How to Ask for What You Truly Need How to Build Trust in Small, Consistent Moments How to Balance Independence and Interdependence How to Stay Open to Love Without a Checklist If there’s one thing to hold onto, it’s this: nothing about love is broken, you’re just being asked to approach it differently. The world may have made connection feel more complicated, but at its core, it still comes back to showing up, being present, and allowing yourself to be seen without needing to get everything right. The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby
If you've been dating for a while and you're starting to feel tired, discouraged, or quietly wondering why this seems so much harder than it should be, you're not imagining things. Modern dating can wear people down, the endless swiping, first dates that go nowhere, the emotional energy it takes just to stay open and hopeful. Many of the people I work with start to doubt themselves, not because anything is wrong with them, but because the process itself is exhausting. In this episode, I'm joined by Tim Molnar, a dating coach and former sociology professor, to talk about dating burnout recovery and how to approach dating with more clarity, intention, and emotional steadiness. Instead of pushing harder or checking out completely, we explore how to date more thoughtfully, in ways that protect your mental health and help you stay connected to yourself along the way. We talk about why modern dating mental health struggles are so common, how swipe culture and endless choice can distort decision-making, and why so many good people end up feeling depleted rather than excited. About Leela Aheer Hon. Leela Sharon Aheer was first elected as a Member of Alberta's Legislative Assembly for the Chestermere-Rocky View constituency on May 5, 2015. She was re-elected on April 16, 2019, as the MLA for the newly formed riding of Chestermere-Strathmore. Born in Edmonton and raised in Chestermere, where she raised her family, Aheer is a proud wife and mother of two amazing young men. She is also a professional singer, vocal coach, and music teacher, instructing singing in seven languages. Her passion for music led her to own and operate a successful music studio for twenty-four years in Chestermere and Calgary, where she was heavily involved in arts, volunteerism, and community service. As Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women (2019 - 2021), Hon. Aheer made significant strides in promoting multiculturalism and women's status. Her proclamation of Women's Entrepreneurship Day in February 2019 was a historic moment for Canada. She was the first Minister of Multiculturalism in the last twenty-five years and the first Deputy Leader of the United Conservative Party. A key priority of the new government was to provide more protections for women through initiatives like Clare's Law. Hon. Aheer has worked tirelessly to affirm her position as an ally within the Alberta Legislature for those seeking shelter from gender-based violence, racism, and female genital mutilation. In May of 2022, her work on this matter came to fruition when The Health Professions (Protecting Women and Girls) Amendment Act, 2022, a Bill she championed in the Legislature, earned Royal Assent. This significant achievement is a testament to her commitment to social justice. MLA Aheer is renowned in her community and among her peers for her strategic insights and ability to build meaningful partnerships. Hon Aheer was appointed Senior Director of Strategy and Partnerships with BioAro Inc., a precision health and longevity medicine leader, in July 2024. She was also appointed the BioSport Chief Growth Officer. Her visionary approach and commitment to the public are invaluable in navigating the complexities of global health markets. What makes some people heal faster than others? And how can you use that information to speed up your own healing process? Since healing myself in 2018, I've worked with hundreds of men and women — in my clinic and online — to find and fix the root causes behind their gut, skin, sinus, hormone, and autoimmune issues. And after working with all these clients, I started asking myself: what made the difference that helps some clients heal fast, while others healed slow? Was it random who healed quickly? Or was it from invisible, uncontrollable factors like their genes? Turns out—it wasn't random. And it definitely wasn't genetics. There were clear, repeatable habits my fastest-healing clients shared. Today, I'm breaking down the top 3 things my most successful clients do to heal their gut FAST—so you can do the same. Many leaders feel stuck trying to predict the future and create perfect plans. But the most powerful move isn't necessarily predicting or planning. It's simply staying open--being willing to explore new and emerging opportunities. As Gayle Lantz explains, "Sometimes the next opportunity is not in the direction that you assumed it would be. It's in the direction that shows up once you're already moving."Find the full show notes at:https://workmatters.com/Stay-Open-to-Unpredictable-Paths-Whats-Your-Next-Move

We all carry invisible chains: beliefs like "I'm not enough," "I'm not ready," or "What if I fail?" The real cage isn't the world around us; it's the story we've been told about who we're allowed to be. Because freedom doesn't come from trying harder, proving more, or fitting into someone else's mold, it comes from letting go. In this Language of Love Conversation, I sit down with Jennifer Pastiloff, author and speaker, whose new book Proof of Life explores the powerful act of reclaiming permission to exist fully in your own body, voice, and life. After years of self-doubt, shame, and self-abandonment, Jennifer shares how healing began with learning to speak her truth out loud. We dive into Jennifer's journey of self-discovery, which was shaped by moments of struggle, loss, and personal awakening. In this Conversation, we explore: How to recognize your “inner asshole” and stop believing its lies Why speaking your truth out loud is where healing begins What “heart-sight” means and how to listen to it The trap of “when I get there, then I'll be happy” How making bad art can actually set you free Why finding your “I got you” people changes everything The lesson grief teaches us about living now, not later If you've ever struggled with shame or felt disconnected from yourself, this conversation is a beacon back home. Remember to check out Jennifer's book, Proof of Life: Let Go, Let Love, and Stop Looking for Permission to Live Your Life, now available on Amazon. For her intimate, life-changing retreats, visit jenniferpastiloff.com/ and email her directly @jenniferpastiloff.com to apply, she loves hearing from people who are ready to show up fully and authentically. Of the 156 rural hospitals currently in the state, about 70% have lost services, and more than half are at risk of closing. Federal cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and Affordable Care Act coverage are expected to significantly increase the uninsured rate in Texas and could cause more rural hospitals to shutter. What's being done to keep these vital lifelines open?
