In the creative industries, thinking differently IS a hugepart of the job. These days, we are so much more aware that differences can show up as ADHD, autism, or other forms of neurodivergence but there's still a lack of understanding about the whole ND world. So I sat down with Sam Margaritis, a neurodivergence coachwho helps creative minds thrive, to explore how leaders can build environments where all kinds of brains do their best work. If you're leading a creative team—or part of one—this is aconversation worth tuning into. Sam can be found at www.sammargaritis.com or on LinkedIn. #neurodivergence #inclusiveleadership #neurodiversityatwork
When you think about your resilience and wellbeing, how often do think about your money and finances? We often think we've got to make space to develop our mental and physical resilience but if you don't have financial resilience the former can be like pushing the proverbial Sisyphean boulder up the hill. Up and down.Nearly 12 million people feel overwhelmed or stressed dealing with financial matters, including 40% of adults with credit or loans saying they suffer anxiety and stress, according to a survey by the Financial Conduct Authority. So what to do? Well, when it all started to get on top of me, I turned to a financial coach Sasha Speed.Despite the fact I've worked with a financial advisor and have a wonderful accountant, I really needed someone to help me get clarity, direction and confidence in what I was doing overall. It's been so incredibly helpful, I wanted to spread the work about the work Financial Coaches. If you think your financial resilience and wellbeing could be improved, take a listen to this short chat with Sasha about what a financial coach is and how they help. Have you ever opened your wardrobe and found it stuffed to the rafters with clothes and yet you have nothing to wear? Or are you holding onto clothes that don't fit you, don't suit you, or just don't suit your lifestyle anymore? Do you just wish you had the perfect capsule wardrobe so everything just went together and worked and was easy and comfortable to wear for your life NOW? This was me! I was a BIG YES to all those questions, and yet I just got stuck on what to do about it. Clothes can give so much confidence that I don't believe it's a frippery or something to dismiss. Watch the interview with Alex Ward So when Alexandra Wall (who I'd met through Channel 4) told me that she was combining her new coaching practice with her styling practice, I thought, ‘finally, the answer! A CLOTHES COACH!' I booked her, she took me through her process and now I've gotten rid of the stuff that no longer works (and sold it on Vinted) and swapped it for stuff that fits me, suits me AND is in my colours. To find out more about Clothes Coaching and Alex, we made this little interview! You can book a free discovery call with Alex via her website: https://www.alexsoutfit.com/
I was asked to give three keynotes on leadership for the Royal Institute of British Architects: 1) Learning to lead 2) Leading a team 3) Leading an organisation. All different topics but it made me reflect that the absolute foundation to all three is Self-Leadership: the skill and practice of leading yourself. This is a big subject, but I think there are 4 main elements to consider. Listen to this week's episode to find out what they are. Recently, I was with the CEO of a big organisation. She was asked what leadership skill she used most in her very, very big job. She said, ‘Listening, I spend a lot of my time listening.' That was the number one thing she practised. There's a key distinction in listening: You can either listen to respond OR you can listen to understand. So my invitation this week is to remember: two ears, one mouth and try listening twice as much as you talk. Have a listen to this week's episode for some tips on out how to do this. ‘Catfishing' meaning ‘the practice of pretending on social media to be someone different, in order to trick or attract another person.' What am I going on about? Simply this: does your profile pic on LinkedIn or your website or whatever professional digital media you use still look like you? Why am I asking? You don't need me to tell you the world around us is going through huge change: technological advancements, digital disruption, climate change, social norms and values of yesteryear no longer being the norm, expectations about working and quality of life. The pace of that change will only get faster, I think, what with advancements in AI. Rapid change can be bewildering and it's tempting to cling on to what we know and hope that it all goes back to normal. It's unlikely it will. It will be a new normal. Change is going to happen whether we like it or not, so how do we help ourselves and put ourselves in a position to be most responsive and adaptable? Have a listen to this week's episode to find out. At the time of speaking to you, here in the UK we've just had Storm Isha and are about to have Storm Jocelyn. Many people around the country with trees blown over, roof tiles flying off and disruption to travel caused by the windy, rainy weather. Frankly, the stormy weather is a great metaphor for life in the 2020s! We are living in turbulent times, often feeling buffeted and blown by one thing happening after the other. Thoughts are whirling about the present, anxiety about what's to come, and difficulty seeing a clear path forward with any certainty. More than ever, I think, it's important to stay grounded, tethered to the ground, so to speak - mentally, physically and spiritually. How much does empathy play a role in your leadership style? Are you ‘old school' and think anything like that is a bit too soft to merit serious consideration? Were you brought up with leaders who were definitely more ‘tell don't ask' rather than ‘ask don't tell? For you, is any discussion of feelings awkward? Well, you might be interested in the business book of the year is called ‘Leader as Healer' and I've been lucky enough to study with the author Nicholas Janni via Coaches Rising. When my husband and I went to pick up our daughter from university, the weather was awful, and the motorway was busy. My husband is a confident driver, but I am not a good passenger. If I'm not driving, I often feel car sick for starters. I don't like going too fast or too near. Plus I'm hyper-alert for any dangers. Which means I'm very vocal with the shrieks and the imaginary slamming of the brakes. When we got back from the round trip, I was feeling a bit sick and frazzled, and my husband said sympathetically, ‘You're not a good passenger'. And I agreed. And then - boom! It suddenly became a metaphor that translated to other aspects of my life. Am I a good passenger elsewhere or am I happier being in the driving seat? What about being a backseat driver always telling others what to do? Am I ever like that? So, what does this have to do with you? Well, I think it's an interesting thing for you to ponder. Do you have a strong sense of who you are, how you operate best, what you stand for and what really makes you thrive? If not, I really recommend taking the time to develop it. I think having a strong sense of self is really the foundation of true confidence and internal validation. If you rely on external validation and approval of others for your sense of worth, it can be a precarious way to exist. The stronger the sense of self, the less you rely on external validation. Listen to the episode where I share the concept of the Pancha Kosha , which says we have 5 layers from outside to in that make up who we are. Thinking about yourself in this way and examining each layer can help you deepen your sense of self from the outside in. It's sort of like having a map to help you explore your own being. Do you often feel like you are a bit of a wallflower in meetings? What I mean is, rarely saying anything, being scared to ask a question or raise a point in case you are wrong? Are you held back by a fear of looking stupid? Do you then feel stupid for not saying anything? Well, fear not, you are most definitely not alone! This topic comes up so much in coaching. Why does it matter? Well, if you, like most people, want to create a positive impact, be heard, be seen, and be recognised for the good you do, then you can't be that wallflower. You have to be seen and heard and contributing to the conversation, the debate, and the discussion in meetings is an important part of delivering and showing value. I work mainly with people in the creative industries and from what I can see this is the toughest year yet in the 30 years that I worked. Fluctuations in the market, disruption, strikes, you name it, it's been incredibly tough. The knock-on effect of that is a lack of jobs or fear of losing roles or too many qualified people for the amount of vacancies out there. 2024 is upon us and it is that time of year when people start thinking about what they want to be different. One tool I think is absolutely brilliant at this time of year is the Wheel of Life. It can help you work out how to go from mediocre to memorable (in a good way) in terms of your year ahead. You can click here to get the version I use with clients from the Co-Active Training Institute with instructions from me. Basically, it's a template like this.... Your life is divided into 8 different segments for different parts of your life for you to consider. First, you take a look at each segment and rate it on a scale of 1-10 how you are doing - how happy, how fulfilled, etc. Then, you join up all the parts and see what your current wheel looks like. Most people end up with a jagged wheel. Now, for a wheel to run smoothly, ideally, there need to be no big, jagged bits. Have a listen to the podcast for the next steps and how to smooth out that wheel. Most people are scared of change, frightened by the unknown and the feeling of not being in control of what's going to happen. But I think there's a way to find it positively scary. So change often is scary but standing still, in the long run, can be even scarier in terms of what you don't end up doing, what you miss out on and experience. So it's worth it to feel the fear and do it anyway. It's worth it to know that you'll be uncomfortable for a bit in an unknown territory but, in time, it will become comfortable and familiar. It's worth it to grow, develop and learn in life. “If at first you don't succeed…try, try again!” goes the saying. But I think that misses a crucial bit between the ‘not succeeding' and the ‘trying again'. Most of the people I work with are perfectionists. Driven, determined, focused on getting things right and doing the absolute best they can. And there are a lot of benefits from being a perfectionist - it often goes hand-in-hand with high-achieving, extremely talented deliverers. There's no way a perfectionist would intentionally drop the ball, be sloppy or allow themselves to go with the flow. So often, they are sought-after and much in demand. The downside to being a perfectionist is that often, nothing you do feels good enough or good enough for very long. You might work on something and have it be absolutely perfect only to feel a fleeting happiness before you throw it over your shoulder never to be enjoyed again because you are on to the next challenge. Don't forget the good stuff. Stop and notice it. I think it's good for the soul, never mind the body and the mind. This week, my family and I were thrilled to attend one of our kids' prize-giving ceremonies at school. It was wonderful to see all these children being awarded prizes for everything from academic prowess, to sport to art, drama and music. When you are grown up, you don't have schools noticing your work and rewarding you so much and we don't have academic years where we take stock. So you have to do it yourself! You know that saying, ‘What am I - chopped liver?' Well, that's what I remember thinking when I was made redundant a few years ago. ‘How come you don't want me?!' That, and I that wanted the outside world to think that it was MY choice to leave the company rather than have people think I was pushed. So in my leaving email, it was ‘Tracy has decided to leave' rather than ‘Tracy was made redundant'. And from what I can tell that's normally the way it goes when people are made redundant. There seem to be a few negative connotations - you're not wanted but others are; you weren't good enough to keep and so on. But in my great age and wisdom and with the benefit of perspective I now look at redundancy in a very different way. Often in coaching, you are working with a client who is in transition - from stepping up into a more senior role or company or making a career change. They are one place and they want to move to another, find something new, or change how they are now into how they truly want to be. Sometimes, they have a very clear vision of where they want to be and how they want to live. Sometimes, they don't and helping them find both clarity of vision and direction is key. Transition from one state of being can be hard. It can involve getting out of your comfort zone, stepping into the unknown, the unfamiliar, the untested. When I was about 16 I went to school in Yorkshire and we went to London on a history trip. And the great excitement about that trip was not the history lectures we were going to but the fact that a small group of us were going to cut loose (sorry, school) and go to the Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly. What really sticks in my mind was a badge or pin that she was wearing with the Hard Rock logo. It said: LOVE ALL, SERVE ALL Now I am older, and probably because I am a coach, it comes to mind often. Did you watch the HBO show “Succession”? Don't worry, no spoilers here if you haven't yet watched the grand finale but suffice to say, I thought it was fantastic! For those who haven't watched it, it's a series about a big media mogul, Logan Roy, and his grown-up kids and it charts their battle to succeed him as CEO of the company Waystar RoyCo. The series shows kids who have grown up to believe and follow their father's purpose - build a company and make money - rather than ever getting a chance to figure out what their own purpose is. The kid's measure of success is who gets the top spot in this company. No matter if they'd enjoy it or find it fulfilling. So, what does this have to do with you? Well, I'd invite you to think about your own purpose: “the reason for which you exist”. I saw this quote the other day as I was scrolling and loved it: “A diamond won't shine at the bottom of a cave.” Along with it was a story about an old car that was valued differently by other different sets of people. If the car was to be pawned, it was practically worthless because it was old and rusted, but if the car were taken to a vintage car rally, it would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars because they could see and appreciate its true value. Sometimes we are that diamond and find ourselves in an environment where no-one sees our worth. It doesn't mean we are worthless. For my dog Purdey nothing makes her happier than retrieving a ball and for Fiver, he loves scampering about the undergrowth or woods searching for stuff. You never see either of those dogs wagging their tails as furiously as when they are doing those two activities. So what about you - What makes your metaphorical tail wag furiously? What do you most love doing? And is it in your life? If not, could it? In this episode I explore the quote “Confidence is not the absence of fear, it's the knowledge that you'll be okay despite your fear." When it comes to confidence in our careers, fear can hold us back: · Fear of going for a bigger role because you don't think you're 100% qualified; · Fear of speaking up in meetings because you think you might get something wrong; · Fear of disagreeing with the crowd and being ostracised; If any of these are you listen to this week's episode for some things for you to think about ‘feeling the fear and doing it anyway' Sign up for my weekly career and well-being tips straight to your inbox and find more ways I can help on the Free Resources page on my website. https://fasttracktofearless.com/free-resources Get the self-belief and clarity to create a confident career strategy and join me on the Fast Track to Fearless.
In this episode I explore Spring Cleaning and what that would look like for your career. With any declutter you have to get everything out, sort through it, chuck out stuff that no longer serves you, keep the rest and create space for new things to come along. So for a career, this would mean pausing, taking stock, thinking about if what you have now suits you and what you are wanting then evaluating all your career stuff and giving it a good once over and getting rid of what doesn't serve you anymore. So if you fancy a spring clean for your career, listen to this week's episode for some things for you to think about. I've been humming Sinatra's song ‘My Way' especially that line... ‘Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention.' And it got me thinking about regrets. Regrets are something we all have. Let's face it, it's hard to go through life always making the right decisions, never putting a foot wrong, always doing the right thing and making the right choices. · Regrets can be wistful about what could have happened. · Regrets can be painful about what should have happened. · Regrets can be a thorn in your side if they involve choices that didn't end well. If you have regrets that haunt you, listen to this episode on tips on how to deal with it Sign up for my weekly career and well-being tips straight to your inbox and find more ways I can help on the Free Resources page on my website. https://fasttracktofearless.com/free-resources Get the self-belief and clarity to create a confident career strategy and join me on the Fast Track to Fearless.
How good are you at taking a compliment? Terrible? Do you bat it off, push it away, deny the truth of whatever is being said or go to great lengths to explain exactly why you are actually undeserving? I think people equate accepting a compliment as being self-congratulatory and not many people want to be perceived as a show-off or big-headed. But there is a difference between being a show-off and being proud and acknowledging your achievements. It's something that comes up a lot in coaching - people want and need to be able to sell themselves but don't want to feel like they are showing off. Listen to the episode for my tips on how to take a compliment without it feeling awkward or like you are showing off. “Am I enough?” This is one of the frequent things that come up when talking to coaching clients about what they worry about. ‘Am I enough?' But what is ‘enough'? Personally, I don't think hundreds of social media posts just telling you ‘you are enough' is going to cut it. Because YOU have to believe it rather than relying on someone else to tell you. How do you do that? Well listen to the podcast and find out how I recommend you start and the 7 questions you should ask yourself. Today I want to talk about this expression - "When one door shuts another one opens" When I was leaving a big job and didn't know what I was going to do next, my friend Tobi wrote in my leaving card, ‘Remember, when one door shuts, another opens but standing in the corridor is a b*tch'. And I loved that. That in-between bit - the standing in the corridor between one door shutting and not knowing where or when the next door will open - is horrible. It's worrisome, lonely, stressful and it can last a long time. Listen to the episode for my tips on how to handle ‘standing in the corridor' Tracy Forsyth is a Leadership & Career Coach working with senior leaders who want to make a big, positive impact on the world. This is my favourite rallying cry of the moment: ‘Eat it Up and Leave No Crumbs!' One of the benefits of having teenage kids is that you get to hear these sayings and this one I particularly love. So, ‘OMG, she ate it up and left no crumbs' or ‘no crumbs left' is a way of appreciating and applauding that someone did an amazing job. High praise indeed. If you looked at life through the lens of ‘I'm gonna eat it up and leave no crumbs' what would that look like? I watched an interview with Rihanna's Choreographer after the Super Bowl show a while ago, and what I liked most was her reply to this question: How would you describe your style of dance? What makes you stand out so much everyone else? Parris's reply was this: I would say it's very unapologetic. Yep. I think it's very inspiring. Questions - what would it be like for you to dance in a very unapologetic way? Moreover, what would it be like to live life in an unapologetic way? What would you do differently? So often when we have a big meeting we think about OUR agenda, what we want to say, what we want to get out of it, what we want. We look at it from our own point of view. We are in broadcast mode. We don't consider the person on the receiving end of the broadcast.I don't think that's most conducive to the best meetings. No body likes to be talked at or to have too much information loaded on them. One thing I try to do is to think about what would it look like if you were going to be the other person's ‘best meeting of the day'? Listen to the episode for my 6 tips on how to achieve this. This week's coaching corner is inspired by an article I saw in the Times titled, ‘Brag Like an American To Get Ahead at Work'. It reminded me that so many people I work with find it hard to sell themselves without feeling the ‘ick'. But selling yourself is such an important part of life - people need to know who you are, what you promise, what you've achieved and what you can do for them that we have to feel the ick and do it anyway. Be You. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. They don't all have the answer. Nor do they have it all worked out. As a younger person, I used to look up at leadership and think they had it all worked out. People above me had more experience, more expertise, so were bound to make the right decisions and know the answer. As I got older, I realised that wasn't necessarily the case. Often not the case!
