“my strange old book-collector” [EMPT] Ben Abramson with Vincent Starrett at a signing event for ‘Books Alive' Circa 1940. Location Unknown / Photographer Unknown (Source: ) There are some Sherlockians we wish we could have interviewed for this program — individuals long gone but fondly remembered — whose unique perspectives would be a boon to our listeners. Unfortunately, most of them are beyond our reach. In this case however, we have one who is available to us but comes to us in a prepackaged interview. Ben Abramson, BSI ("The Beryl Coronet") was a bookseller and the first publisher of The Baker Street Journal. And he sat for an interview on the radio in 1954. We share Ben's background, his early days as a bookseller, his move from Chicago to New York City, his association with some of the Sherlockian greats such as Vincent Starrett, Edgar W. Smith, and Peter Blau, and trace the rise and tragic fall of the BSJ and of Ben himself. The winner of the previous episode's Canonical Couplet is revealed and we share yet another couplet for your identification. The winner will receive a copy of an Old Series BSJ as published by Ben. “I travelled for two years” [EMPT] This month's Masters Class features the second in our three essays by Edgar W. Smith. In Vol. 1 No. 3 of The Baker Street Journal from 1946, Smith wonders about Sherlock Holmes's travels between 1891 and 1894. More specifically, he compares global events and geographical and cultural realities to Holmes's story, and something isn't quite right. Where does Smith place Sherlock Holmes for two of those years during the hiatus? It's just a Trifle. If you have a suggestion for a Trifles episode, let us know at trifles @ ihearofsherlock.com. Nobody is getting the shots any more and the FDA de-authorized them, right? Wrong! Today, I explain how the FDA's recent action is designed to enshrine an annual COVID shot into society in perpetuity, just like the flu shot. Officials want you to forget and are trying a rope-a-dope to get Republicans to continue to ignore the biomedical security state as they quietly expand it. I explain how to fight it and also how to utilize the growing GOP dominance in state legislatures to save us right now, without having to wait for the presidential election. At the end, we're joined by attorney Tom Renz, who is leading the fight in legislatures to force product labeling on all food that contains gene therapy. He explains how we are building momentum, despite losing the vote in Missouri. If conservatives actually focused on red-state legislatures, they'd be able to overpower the whims of the business lobby, which is why DeSantis' fight against Disney is so important. There are always tradeoffs to every decision that you make in your business. But sometimes we unconsciously make decisions that come with tradeoffs that actually lead us away from where we truly want to go and what we truly want to create. Throughout my years supporting business owners in their expansion, I've seen three decisions in particular that come with massive tradeoffs that lead in the direct opposite of where they want to go. And I'm sharing those three decisions right here in this episode. When you tune into S6E4, you'll hear… The 3 compromises many business owners make that are profoundly counterproductive when creating a sustainable business How to explore what external narratives you have internalized and connect to and build trust in your own inner voice Shifting from following “the right way” to grow your business to thriving in the present whilst working towards your authentic vision for your business Trusting yourself is a game-changer and you can start today! “The longer that we've been entrenched in trusting other voices before trusting our own voice, the harder it will naturally feel at the beginning to start accessing our own voice. Can you adjust how you're running your business right now to more directly contribute to the success that YOU want to create? Can you do at least one thing in your business exactly how YOU want to do it instead of how someone else told you that you have to?” - Carly Jo Bell, Selling Chocolate Claim your 25 Self-Trust Bucks at https://www.wholecomedia.com/podcast ⬅️ you can also see all show notes and more at that link! In what feels like a never ending labour dispute between the province of Ontario and the teachers' unions, we might be seeing the strength of the province's resolve by way of legislation that would be tabled in order to impose a contract on the education sector union. But how do parents feel about all of this? Guest host, Angela Kokott, is joined by Jess Lyons who's the Lead Organizer with the Ontario Parent Action Network, but is also a mom of three kids in the education system, who talks about the consensus when it comes to how parents are reacting.

“Maybe you collect yourself” [EMPT] Many Sherlockians are collectors. Most of those collect books or related written material. But collectors are an interesting breed, as widely varied as the general population. Peter Eckrich and Rob Nunn discovered this fact as they set out to put together The Finest Assorted Collection: Essays on Collecting Sherlock Holmes. In essays written by 27 Sherlockians, they take us on a journey of collecting that highlights the eccentricities of the collections and collectors alike. It's a book that's all about passion, as our interview makes abundantly clear. The Canonical Couplet follows the interview; try matching wits with our poetical representation of a Sherlock Holmes story. If you correctly guess the story we're referring to, you'll be eligible for a drawing for a copy of The Finest Assorted Collection. • Getting right in body, mind, and soul means adopting the attitudes and mindsets that make a self-disciplined life possible. Firstly, make a plan to reduce, remove, and avoid temptations. If you are proactive and pre-empt them, they have less impact on your life. • One of the biggest and most damaging myths is that we can only take action when the time is right or when we feel like it. The truth is that we can act even if we don't have the motivation! Just start, and you'll find that it's the other way around: taking action inspires you. Sometimes, when things are going well in our lives, we put God on the back burner. We believe that we have everything under control, and it’s not until we’re at the end of our rope and have nowhere else to go that we reach out to God. Even then, we try to make things better with our own power and effort. This week, Darron Reese uses an example from the Old Testament to illustrate how this way of living keeps us from receiving and achieving God’s best for our lives. Often, by not trusting God, we allow things in our lives that shouldn’t be there, and we find ourselves holding on to beliefs, behaviors or relationships that God wants us to get rid of. On the other hand, if we can learn to trust God with our nothing, we allow Him to miraculously turn it into something.

"Maybe you collect yourself, sir" [EMPT] It's the end of 2020, and we thought it would be fun to interview each other about some of the favorite items in our collection. Even better: we thought we'd do it on live video. In addition to pulling out some items that may make your raise your eyebrows (either at the value of the items or our mental state upon purchasing them), we talked about the nature of collecting, the intrinsic value and feeling that some items bring, and gave a few tips on what collectors might think about. But mostly, we enjoyed connecting with our listeners and viewers, who were kind enough to tune in and pepper us with comments throughout the show. We also discussed a new structure for our Patreon and PayPal supporters, including a forthcoming community we're building for them on . Stay tuned for more on this in future posts and episodes. We announced the final winner of this year's Canonical Couplet where we give you two lines of poetry that describe one of the stories, and you name it. We'll resume the quiz in Season 15. “I had only one confidant—my brother Mycroft.” [EMPT] Why did Mycroft put himself in harm's way for Sherlock Holmes when the latter faced his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty? Mycroft put Sherlock up for a night, drove the brougham that took Watson to Waterloo, and kept the rooms up at 221B during the hiatus that ensued. But why didn't Moriarty go after Mycroft? What made him think that "the British government" didn't know about his activities? We explore the role of Mycroft Holmes in "The Final Problem." It's more than a trifle. “he still made India too hot to hold him” [EMPT] India is a wonderful land. And it plays a part in a number of Sherlock Holmes stories. Certainly, it's a center point in The Sign of Four, but where else do we find the influence of India in the Canon? In our regular feature of international influences in the Sherlock Holmes stories, we learn about battles, cities, districts and other Indian curiosities. It's just a Trifle. “the game was whist” [EMPT] We continue our monthly investigation into Games and Sports in the Sherlock Holmes stories, and in this case, we turn our attention to a card game. Specifically, whist. There aren't too many instances of card games in the Canon, but whist comes up a couple of times. How was it played? We discuss that, and something of a trifle with respect to the game of whist that was discovered in "The Devil's Foot." Have you left us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts yet? After working directly with Pharrell and Nigo, at BBC and Bape respectively, as a Creative Consultant and Operations manager – Toby Feltwell founded his own brand Cav Empt. He even brought on some of the designers from the Bape team, after the company was sold to investors, to work on C.E. with him. In particular that were involved were Sk8thing, co-founder and co-head, and Hishi, lead design with Toby and handling most of the designs. In the past half decade, they've made their mark in the streetwear world and are still going strong. Adam gives an insight into the brand, why he likes them, and how he would describe their style and ideas.

Episode Summary: Why it's crucial to get feedback from outgoing members in order to help you zero in on problem areas (and easy fixes!) Monitoring member activity and engagement, and taking action to salvage people who might be slipping away "I haven't got time" is a common reason members leave - what does that really mean and how can you tackle it? "a wax-coloured model of my old friend" [EMPT] One of the handiest items found at 221B Baker Street has to be the wax bust of Sherlock Holmes. More than once it played a role as a decoy for Sherlock Holmes. But when did Holmes commission it and how did it get to Baker Street? And was it even the same bust between the two tales? These questions and more await in the latest edition of Trifles. Have you left us a rating and review on the podcast player of your choice yet? We could really use your help. "tell me how you came alive" [EMPT] While there is no explicit mention of Easter in the Sherlock Holmes story, we do have a story arc that follows the Easter mystery. While Holmes himself may not have been terribly religious (although he did express some acknowledgement of a higher power from time to time), he respected the tradition and the necessary belief in resurrection.
"See how beautifully the spring works" [STUD] Spring is here! Suh-per-ing is here! Life is skittles and life is beer... You may not have realized this, but more than a quarter of the Sherlock Holmes stories occurred in the spring. We took the opportunity to call out a few of them an delve into why the season worked as both a setting for the stories and as tool to juxtapose Holmes and Watson. Of course, we don't stop there, as we chat about what our 100th episode may contain (just four episodes away!), a trending book topic on Twitter, the masterful scholarship that William S. Baring-Gould leveraged to determine his chronology, and welcome special guests Tom Lehrer and Orson Welles. The Sherlockian news is here to get you caught up, our Gas-Lamp is from the current issue of the Baker Street Journal (Vol. 66, No. 1), Rob Nunn joins us as a victim contestant on Mental Exaltation, and we give you a sneak peek into what IHOSE Episode 97 will contain.
