Are you sick of the word self-care? For me, it got really overused, and it became one more thing to do right! I was definitely sold on the idea that self-care is getting a pedicure, a regular massage, or going to yoga class— these are pretty big things! Problem is that they made me think of self-care as something “extra,” as a luxury. I would like to offer that self-care is necessary. On this episode, I go into 3 different self-care concepts and ways to integrate them.Awareness of what we needFood as self-carePlanning as self-careNoticing—and giving yourself—what you need is an act of self-care. Any act of caring for ourselves is self-care. Taking care of basic needs — nourishing food, water, moving our body, sleep — is self care.I believe we can all find simple acts of self-care we can do every day. I also believe in setting aside regular time for “bigger” self care. Maybe that yoga class, but maybe something else.Let's look at some of the super basic self-care acts that we can work into our lives regularly no matter what hats you're wearing.Do you need to get outside for some fresh air? Do you need 10 minutes of quiet with nobody bothering you? Do you need to eat? It's easy to brush that off because you're too busy or you just need to finish one more thing. But you can stop and give yourself what you need.Getting in the practice of just listening to what you need, I believe is where most of us need to start — given the conditioning I think most women got.And then we can expand that view, and let what is basic grow and evolve. I promise it does.On this episode I talk about 10-10-10, a tool originally taught to me by Nina Manolson. I highly recommend! Here are some self-care moves you can use. Most of them cost nothing and can fit into little pockets of your day:Take a shower or bathPlan your mealsGet dressedTalk a walkPause to check in with what your body needs in stressful momentsAsk for helpReceive the help (asking and receiving, two separate things)Go to bed on timeMake sure that the food you're eating is really serving your bodyExerciseRead a bookPut your feet up for five minutesTake three deep breaths throughout the dayDrink eight glasses of water dailyWrite in your journal for 15 minutesDo three minutes of breathworkGet outside and feel the sun on your faceTurn on your favorite song and danceWrite down 3 things you are grateful for at the beginning or end of each dayPlan for a more in depth self care session (a massage, a day hike, lunch with a friend, a leisurely visit to a museum or botanic garden or bookstore, a morning alone at a cafe … what really restores you?)Eating well and how you prepare food can be self-car — or not.Nourishing yourself is self-care.We show up better for ourselves, for our families, and for our businesses when we are nourished. So stop skipping meals or living on caffeine and cookies. If nourishing yourself feels hard, look at what you can do to make it easier:Know what is for dinner—this saves you time and energy throughout the day. Move dinner forward during the day (prepping veggies while you make your morning smoothie or putting something in your slow cooker or stopping at the market while you run other errands). Plan a day to batch prep/cook.Planning and intention setting are self-care.Planning means you are putting your dreams, goals, and needs into time. You are being intentional about how you spend your time and energy.Planning means you are paying attention to your needs when the smart part of your brain is activated.This...

Dear Beautiful Friends,Happy Lunar Imbolc, Full Moon in Leo, Wolf Moon, located within Praesope or the Beehive Cluster! This Full Moon, exact this afternoon (Thursday) features complex dynamics including Sun conjunct Jupiter, Venus conjunct Pluto square Eris and Black Moon Lilith on her approach to the Underworld. Aquarius Mercury is slowing to station retrograde on Saturday, January 30--opening a three week window of personal revolutionary introspection. This also marks a bit of a slow-down in the all planets direct momentum resuming with Mercury's direct station February 20 and continuing through April 27. We have divergent energies dancing in tension and harmony through the coming weeks. With Venus moving into Aquarius on Monday, February 1, we will have the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Vesta all in Aquarius. The February 11 New Moon produces an extraordinary stellium of 7 planetary bodies in Aquarius.Aquarius invites detachment, zooming out to see the larger view, and a spirit-oriented perspective. It is of benefit to take the Eagle view, to remember that beneath all of the messiness and entanglement of our human lives, emotions, triggers, and karmic patterns, we are spirit in a body and ultimately free. We also have Venus at her furthest point from the Earth as she prepares to enter the Underworld, or the beams of the Sun on February 14, invisible until about May 5, when she appears as Evening Star. Venus in the Underworld takes us to our depths even as Aquarius invites us to rise into the realms of light, spirit and our multidimensional natures. I shared in my podcast a poem recently unearthed by Lainie Love Dalby in our New Year's Retreat, a poem I wrote shortly before my Earth Sky Woman Summit and Podcast. To build upon our initial overview episode on mindfulness, today we will talk through the concept of mindful eating - what it means, how it’s a healthy shift in mindset from toxic diet culture, and how to begin applying its principles into your life.CamnecdoteCooking, Food & Whole30Protein - Main Event - Topic d’jourDefinition: reframing dieting to mindful eating, including food-related thoughts, food preparation (shopping & cooking), and ingesting of the food. Why did we make this switch?Roots of diet culture/capitalismSelling us something - books, processed foods, plans, classes, clothes, etctrend in wellness world to market it differently (e.g., “lifestyle”, “program”) but still food rules that promote foodphobia in the pursuit of weight loss. They each prescribe a different food elimination plan and list of “bad” and “good” foods.ITS NOT A DIET, its a lifestyle (atkins, whole30)Access to timeMake us super busy, need things on the goNo energy left to prepare foodsCertain foods are more “ideal”CuisineNutritionRacismFood deserts/food insecurityHistorical access to foodsSexismDanielle reciting the entirety of the Feminist Manifesto“Thin privilege” AbleismPackaging of foodsKitchen accessibility/safetyBMI MythNutritional science was not something that was studied in the 1830s, which is when BMI was createdIt’s used today because it’s easy, but is not a very effective of overall healthA pound of muscle is different from a pound of fat (The Rock is obese according to BMI) Does not take into account body composition (ex. Just because someone is dense does not mean they need to lose weight to be healthy)No correlation between BMI and ill healthDifferent bodily types - genes determine thisAlso research categories of BMI are primarily based on white ppl age 18-65, and...not everyone is white ages 18-65. See: racismLifestyle contributes to your health more than any other measurementCan be benefits to weight loss, but diet is less important than adaptive health careTLDR: Losing weight is not always the answerOverall - there’s no one right way, only the right way for each one of usWhere do we startThe act of eating - use cooking chart from RouxbeAssess time and needs and wantsMake an intentional choice“Elimination diets” - seek the help of a nutritionistA lot of issues correlated to imbalance of nutrientsveganism / soy, oreos, french friesSamin Nosrat - Salt Acid Fat Heat - “just get in the kitchen & cook!”Start exploringMost ppl are not bad cooks, they’re just impatient or lack timeSet aside time to try a new recipe, recreate a restaurant dish, apps to plug in ingredientsGGG using prepped ingredientsAyurveda?Sister science to yoga.
