A Critical Engagement with Extinction Rebellion Quebec: Interview with Mei Chiu & Alex Shiraz -> Listen, download and share: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/extinctionrebellionquebec On the eve of the Climate Strike, No Borders Media speaks with two people of colour members of Extinction Rebellion Quebec: Mei Chiu and Alex Shiraz. This extended interview is a critical engagement with Extinction Rebellion, which has become known in the UK , and increasingly in Quebec, for their disruptive non-violent direct actions to raise awareness about the climate crisis. The first half of the interview explores the origins, actions and organizing of Extinction Rebellion, including some reflections on intergenerational organizing and activist burnout. In the second half, we examine the left-wing critiques of Extinction Rebellion more deeply, including their seeming de-emphasis of anti-capitalism and anti-colonialism, the persistent white, liberal, middle class centering of environmentalism in the West, and the problematic tactic of pure non-violence. -> Listen, download and share: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/extinctionrebellionquebec This interview was recorded, in-studio, on September 25, 2019 in Montreal. Solidarity with the Migrant Caravan from Honduras to the USA; denouncing Canadian complicity. A feature No Borders Media interview with migrant justice organizers Stacey Gomez and Yurissa Varela -> Listen, download and share here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/migrantcaravansolidarity On this edition of No Borders Media, we explore in more detail the recent migrant caravan that courageously traveled from Honduras, through Guatemala, to the US-Mexico border. We speak with two migrant justice organizers - Stacey Gomez and Yurissa Varela - who are based in Halifax and Ottawa respectively, but also with strong links to Central America. Together, Stacey and Yurissa provide basic background about the caravan, including an eye-witness account from Veracruz, Mexico by Yurissa. They break down the lies and myths about the caravan perpetuated by the Trump administration, the far-right, and much of the mainstream media. Stacey and Yurissa describe the mutual aid between migrants, and solidarity expressed by supporters of the caravan during its journey. There is a focus on the situation of LGBTQ+ migrants, as well as the current women-led hunger strike in Tijuana by caravan participants. Importantly, we together breakdown Canadian state and corporate complicity in creating the displacement of Central Americans, such as the role of destructive mining companies like Goldcorp and Aura Minerals in Honduras and Guatemala. We also focus on debunking Canada's role as some sort of state that welcomes migrants, in the context of the continued imposition of the Safe Third Country Agreement with the USA, as well as the deportation of migrants who reside in Canada, such as Lucy Francineth Granados who was forcibly deported to Guatemala in April. This interview was recorded on December 3, 2018, by Jaggi Singh of No Borders Media. We Will Outlive Them: For a World without Pogroms, for a Future without Fascism No Borders Media interview with Moishe & Sharona, on contemporary Jewish Anti-Fascism -> Listen, download and share here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/outlivethem On this No Borders Media audio dispatch, we get insight into contemporary Jewish Anti-Fascism with two individuals involved with the recent Outlive Them call to action (info: https://outlivethem.wordpress.com/). The call for anti-racist actions, between November 8 to 11, coincided with the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the violent precursor to the horror of the Holocaust. The actions this year had particular resonance due to the Pittsburgh Synagogue Massacre in late October. For perspective on modern Jewish Anti-Fascism, No Borders Media spoke with Sharona and Moishe of Outlive Them. Moishe is also a member of the Muslim-Jewish Anti-Fascist Front. Together, Sharona and Moishe address the current epidemic proportions of worldwide anti-Semitism, solidarity between movements and peoples fighting oppression, Jewish histories of struggle and resistance, and militant tactics and strategies of anti-fascism. More than 50,000 Quebec students on strike this week Interview with Laurie Bissonnette and Jackie Ohayon of the Campaign on Student Work (CUTE), on this week's strike to demand an end to unpaid student internships -> Listen, download and share here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/quebecinternstrike This is a No Borders Media audio dispatch. This week in Quebec, upwards of 55,000 students will be on strike, the largest strike action in years. This strike is different since it's student interns, mainly from technical and professional programs, that are the engine of the strike. These interns are demanding an end to unpaid work, and proper compensation for their internships. The jobs done by these interns -- in teaching, social work, nursing, midwifery, and other professions -- represent jobs gendered as work done by women. This week's strike is a feminist effort, inspired by the Wages for Housework campaigns of the 1970s as much as recent efforts to resist neo-liberal capitalism. For perspective on this week's strike, particularly for English-speaking listeners, No Borders Media spoke with two student organizers, interns and strikers involved with autonomous committees of the Campaign on student work, known as the Campagne sur le travail étudiant (CUTE). On the eve of the strike, we speak with Laurie Bissonnette and Jackie Ohayon, social work students and interns who will be on strike this week. We hear from a panel of four Toronto-area left-wing activists, organizers and political commentators: Desmond Cole, Niloofar Golkar, Syed Hussan and Sharmeen Khan. Over the course of a more than one-hour conversation, we explore the regressive changes already brought in by the Ford government, and the possibilities of resistance to his agenda. We look critically at the demobilizing role of the NDP and big labour, but also hopefully at examples of grassroots self-organizing, from the recent high school walkout to Black Lives Matter and the Fight for Fifteen campaign. We raise the alarm bells about the increased normalization of the racist far-right in Ontario, as exemplified by the discourse of candidates running all over the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe. There's some kudos one progressive Toronto mayoral candidate, but focus on non-electoral rooted resistance to meaningfully disrupt the right-wing and far-right agenda. ----- NO BORDERS MEDIA No Borders Media, based in Toronto and Montreal, is an autonomous left-wing media network. The walkout was called: We The Students Do Not Consent, and was inspired, partially, by high school organizing in the USA. For an insider view, No Borders Media speaks with three Toronto-area high school students who helped to organize and participated in the walkout: Thea Baines, 17, Benjamin Doll, 19, and Amina Vance,17. Rose City, which is Portland, Oregon, has been the site of attempts at neo-Nazi and far-right organizing for decades. As recently as May 2017, two people were killed, and one other badly injured, in an attack by a white nationalist on light rail train in Portland. Recently, Rose City Antifa has confronted the far-right Patriot Prayer protests, an umbrella for white nationalists and neo-Nazis to march and protest together. This in-depth, feature interview goes into details about various strategic and tactical considerations for anti-fascist groups, based on the experiences of Rose City Antifa. We discuss responses to the hesitancy of liberal anti-racists to antifa tactics, as well as the distinctions between the various neo-Nazis and white nationalists who have organized more publicly in the past two years. Rose City Antifa organizing is rooted in relentless research about far-right threats, direct action against those threats, but also building and maintaining political and cultural Left space. We discuss these topics in detail. This interview also addresses the controversial question of gun ownership in the USA from the point-of-view of anti-fascist organizing. For the past two weeks, members of Quebec's Black community have raised awareness and mobilized against SLĀV. Protesters have described SLĀV as a "theatrical production based on African-American slave songs ... coordinated by a group of white people, performed by a cast of predominantly white people, and presented by the Festival International du Jazz de Montréal at Théatre du Nouveau Monde. We are alarmed by the dismissal and silencing of Black voices in the creation, development, staging, and promotion of the show SLĀV." (from Against the show SLĀV: http://bit.ly/2KJGreF) For insights into the racism inherent in SLĀV, we speak with MARILOU CRAFT, a Montreal-based writer and dramaturge who initially pointed out the problems with the production of SLĀV in December 2017 (original article: http://bit.ly/2Nthy5F).
