Send us a textThere is No Hate like Christian LoveThis quote is gaining traction in social media. Why does the world seem to hate Christians? Is it because the world hates the goodly things of God? Is it because some who claim to be of Christ are actually hypocrites? Are you one who thinks on Christians with disdain? What of Christ's teaching is offensive? Is it the discipline to control yourself? Is it kindness? Is it compassion? Do you call yourself a Christian, but don't follow the compassionate teaching of Jesus?Observe the rebuke of Jesus on the Pharisees in Matthew 23. Are you like these who lord your salvation over others? Do you hold your head up high as one who is better than those around you because you are saved? Do you love yourself more than your fellow man? If you are one of these, and call yourself a Christian, we hope your study of the New Testament inspires you to open your heart to the love of Jesus, and working toward a maturing of your faith. Surely, you are like the Pharisees. =====Searching for answers to life's questions? Need help finding a church? Drop us a line. In this episode , I sit down with Pizza Girl Founder and CEO, and Activist, Caroline D'Amore. On October 19, just days after the horrific massacre in Israel, Caroline D'Amore was feeling fired up. She'd just gotten off the phone with two different Jewish friends who called her crying and saying they'd lost friends because of their pro-Israel posts on social media. In a spur of the moment video she posted, she said: “I am a Malibu Italian with zero agenda. I have friends on both sides of this Middle East conflict and friends who are currently there giving me details. The one thing I can say is that I'm not highly educated on the long history. I'm doing my best to learn. But the undeniable facts are this: I am not seeing Israeli soldiers marching young girls through the streets, pulling them by their hair after they've just been raped. I'm not seeing Israeli soldiers spitting on the bodies of young women that they just killed. I am not seeing Jewish people ripping off the posters of baby hostages. I am not seeing groups of Jewish people marching in the streets, saying death to an entire community. So as somebody on the outside, I can tell you that is freaking terrifying and I am so scared… I can also tell you I was scared to send my daughter to school, and that wasn't because of Jewish people.” Caroline went on to stick up for the Jewish community, saying, “If you're one of these people ripping off posters and spewing hate, you need to take a really good look at yourself and ask yourself, why would you ever do that? Free the Palestinians does not mean torture Jewish people.” To her over 100,000 followers, Caroline wrote alongside her video, “I want both the Palestinian people and Israelis to find peace and safety immediately and I truly hope that happens but those spewing these hateful things at innocent people need serious mental help and I don't know how you got to this point.” The support from the Jewish community came swiftly, with the post earning more than 102,000 likes and thousands of positive comments from Jews. Since Caroline posted that video, she's received countless loving messages, posted more pro-Jewish videos and been invited to speak to family members of hostages and attend Jewish events, like galas and Shabbat dinners. “I never thought my post would matter,” she said. “Then seeing how much it mattered makes me feel like I have a responsibility to continue to speak out for all these people.” Caroline is an entrepreneur and a single mom to her 8-year-old daughter. She lives in Malibu, where she grew up helping her father run his pizza store. Seeing her father's hard-working spirit, Caroline was inspired to start her own business, Pizza Girl, which sells organic, sugar-free, pizza sauce with the highest quality and healthiest ingredients. Caroline has done well for herself, getting into over 2,000 stores across the country and coming out with the Pizza Girl Pizza Grill, a portable countertop pizza grill.

Everyday Conversations on Race for Everyday People

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2023 49:02

In this conversation on Race, Simma Lieberman, The Inclusionist, and Chad Lassiter, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Council, engage in a deep personal conversation about self-reflection and awareness of privileges, stereotypes, and behaviors. Chad shares his own daily process to engage in self-reflection on race, and his role in bringing people to the common table to challenge stereotypes that perpetuate inequality and discrimination.   With school boards and politicians, not only eliminating African-American history and any discussion of racial discrimination under the guise of making white children feel uncomfortable, we need to find ways to flip the script and empower all children, including white children, to be agents of change. While acknowledging concerns about discomfort, Chad Lassiter says that we can help children see that they have the power to contribute to a more just and equal society. By engaging in these conversations, children can recognize each other's humanity and understand their role in promoting peace and justice.    The key moments in this episode are: [02:26] Conversations around racism and division. [06:37] First experience with racism. [09:12] Police brutality and activism. [12:06] Generational trauma and racial identity. [17:04] Dismantling systemic and structural racism. [21:11] Building solidarity through activism. [26:49] Wealth and taking care of the poor. [28:00] Employment discrimination based on appearance. [33:19] The importance of conversation. [36:13] The trigger for white rage. [40:03] Talking about race in schools. [45:55] The Woman King and toxic masculinity. [48:37] Social change agents and justice warriors.   Chad references the work of Paul Kivel, who emphasizes the necessity of difficult conversations about racism to uproot it.  This episode of Everyday Conversations on Race for Everyday People needs to be heard by anyone who wants to empower people of all ages to eliminate racism and other forms of inequality. With so much foolishness about not even mentioning cultural/racial differences and pretending everyone is the same while erasing non-white people, it's essential that we share and talk about our identities, and culture. This is how we can find common ground and learn and grow together. Chad says these conversations will help us all find a balance between preserving individuality and being open to connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. No one is just one identity, and it would be very boring to pretend otherwise. We talk about Chad's experience of growing up in an all-black community and how his perspective initially remained narrow due to his limited exposure. However, from interacting with individuals from different cultures and backgrounds, his viewpoint expanded, and he discovered shared experiences. This highlights the idea that engaging with diverse perspectives broadens understanding and fosters connections. Simma and Chad talk about the concept of cultural pride reinforcement, particularly within the context of the Black Lives Matter movement. Cultural pride does not entail valuing one culture over another but rather celebrating and affirming the importance of one's own culture while also respecting and acknowledging the significance of other cultures. This supports the notion that maintaining one's identity and culture does not necessitate rejecting or disregarding others. Listen in as we touch on the significance of having conversations about race, racism, and other issues that some may see as divisive.  While recognizing the importance of addressing these topics, we also need to incorporate discussions around peace, justice, truth, love, and kindness. That's how a more inclusive and compassionate society can be created. Without that, we'll be even more divided racially and in every other way Overall, the episode underscores the importance of maintaining one's identity and culture while also seeking common ground with others. It highlights the value of expanding perspectives, celebrating cultural pride, and engaging in conversations that foster understanding, peace, and justice.   Guest Bio Chad Dion Lassiter is a national expert in the field of American Race Relations. Mr. Lassiter has worked on race, peace, and poverty-related issues in the United States of America, Africa, Canada, Haiti, Israel, and Norway, and is called upon frequently by media outlets to provide commentary on race relations and potential solutions. He is the current executive director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, where he has legislatively delegated authority to investigate complaints filed alleging unlawful discrimination in the areas of employment, housing and commercial property, education and/or  public accommodations. During his capacity in this position, he has developed and launched a ‘No Hate in Our State Townhall' to address the surge of White nationalism in Pennsylvania, a ‘Social Justice Lecture Series' providing an outlet for the communities in the state to discuss imperative issues and serves as a Racial Reduction Response team for those communities impacted by hatred. He oversees a staff of 84 with three regional offices that comprise the 67 counties in Pennsylvania and manages an annual budget of $12 million. He has also developed programs under his appointment, such as a ‘Global Social Justice Initiative', ‘Black and Jewish Beloved Community Dialogue', and the ‘College Race Dialogue Initiative.'   Host Bio Simma Lieberman, The Inclusionist helps leaders create inclusive cultures. SmallBites Special Edition: "There's No Hate Like Christian Love?!"-- Three Guiding Questions for Christian Educators

#SmallBites

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2023 6:08

Note: Today's Easter episode is a special edition specifically for Christian educators. While the episode offers great guiding questions to all educators, scriptures are used as a foundation for this episode. "There's no hate like Christian love" is an all too common phrase these days. And as I get ready for my Easter morning church service, I feel shame at what the face of the Christian community has become. I found myself hesitating in using the word "we" when I said Christians. It saddens me that a pillar of my upbringing no longer feels like something to be proud of. I know many others who are believers--loving, accepting ones--who feel the same. This is for us as well. How can educators make campuses a place of healing and wholeness? What actions do we need to take to ensure that no one feels condemned, that everyone feels accepted (not just John 3:16, but John 3:17 as well)? Why do we take actions that have the opposite affect on our campuses and in our communities? Particularly, for those of us who are "of the household of faith", do we model love or are we volcanoes of condemnation erupting over everything we don't agree with? Do our actions and words, like lava, destroy and disrupt? Or do they, bring healing and love even in the darkest situations? WWJD (iykyk)? For those celebrating Easter as the Resurrection, let's use this time of revival to rethink our actions and ideologies. If they don't bring light and love, we are a part of the problem. Use the guiding questions in this week's episode and let's all work to change the current face of Christianity by being carriers of love, grace and healing in our classrooms, on our campuses and in our communities. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hedreich/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hedreich/support

When the devastating floods of July 2022 tore through the mountain communities of Southeastern Kentucky, visual artist Lacy Hale lost her studio and a trove of works in progress. Since that tragic and deadly night, though, even as many of her neighbors in Whitesburg have been forced to move away, one thing she has not lost is her determination to remain in the mountains where she grew up. They are in her blood, and they inspire her art, just as she intends for her art to inspire the people of her corner of Appalachia.Lacy has been making art in Whitesburg since returning from her studies at Pratt Institute in New York City in the early 2000s, and it has become her full-time occupation since 2017. In addition to being a painter and a muralist, she is also a printmaker and over the years has created and sold an array of items bearing her designs. One of her most recognized designs is “No Hate in My Holler,” a graphic she created in 2017 in response to a scheduled neo-Nazi gathering in a nearby town. “No Hate in My Holler” quickly appeared on billboards and T-shirts and also became a popular hashtag, garnering attention from national media outlets.Lacy's murals can be seen in communities throughout Kentucky and Virginia. Among the honors she has received are the Eastern Kentucky Artist Impact Award as well as grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, Great Meadows Foundation and the Tanne Foundation Award. In 2016 she co-founded EpiCentre Arts, which supports and advocates for art and artists throughout the Appalachian Mountains. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Lacy explains why and how her artistry is inseparable from her community and the landscape in which it nestles. She also describes that devastating July night and what it's taken to recommit to her art, her business and her home despite losing almost everything.    https://www.lacyhale.com/
