Solidarity with the Migrant Caravan from Honduras to the USA; denouncing Canadian complicity. A feature No Borders Media interview with migrant justice organizers Stacey Gomez and Yurissa Varela -> Listen, download and share here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/migrantcaravansolidarity On this edition of No Borders Media, we explore in more detail the recent migrant caravan that courageously traveled from Honduras, through Guatemala, to the US-Mexico border. We speak with two migrant justice organizers - Stacey Gomez and Yurissa Varela - who are based in Halifax and Ottawa respectively, but also with strong links to Central America. Together, Stacey and Yurissa provide basic background about the caravan, including an eye-witness account from Veracruz, Mexico by Yurissa. They break down the lies and myths about the caravan perpetuated by the Trump administration, the far-right, and much of the mainstream media. Stacey and Yurissa describe the mutual aid between migrants, and solidarity expressed by supporters of the caravan during its journey. There is a focus on the situation of LGBTQ+ migrants, as well as the current women-led hunger strike in Tijuana by caravan participants. Importantly, we together breakdown Canadian state and corporate complicity in creating the displacement of Central Americans, such as the role of destructive mining companies like Goldcorp and Aura Minerals in Honduras and Guatemala. We also focus on debunking Canada's role as some sort of state that welcomes migrants, in the context of the continued imposition of the Safe Third Country Agreement with the USA, as well as the deportation of migrants who reside in Canada, such as Lucy Francineth Granados who was forcibly deported to Guatemala in April. This interview was recorded on December 3, 2018, by Jaggi Singh of No Borders Media. We Will Outlive Them: For a World without Pogroms, for a Future without Fascism No Borders Media interview with Moishe & Sharona, on contemporary Jewish Anti-Fascism -> Listen, download and share here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/outlivethem On this No Borders Media audio dispatch, we get insight into contemporary Jewish Anti-Fascism with two individuals involved with the recent Outlive Them call to action (info: https://outlivethem.wordpress.com/). The call for anti-racist actions, between November 8 to 11, coincided with the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the violent precursor to the horror of the Holocaust. The actions this year had particular resonance due to the Pittsburgh Synagogue Massacre in late October. For perspective on modern Jewish Anti-Fascism, No Borders Media spoke with Sharona and Moishe of Outlive Them. Moishe is also a member of the Muslim-Jewish Anti-Fascist Front. Together, Sharona and Moishe address the current epidemic proportions of worldwide anti-Semitism, solidarity between movements and peoples fighting oppression, Jewish histories of struggle and resistance, and militant tactics and strategies of anti-fascism. This is a No Borders Media audio dispatch. This past Friday, September 21, 2018, tens of thousands of high school students in Ontario, from close to 100 schools, walked out of their classes in protest against regressive changes to sexual education as well as other curriculum changes proposed and implemented by the right-wing Doug Ford Conservative government. The walkout was called: We The Students Do Not Consent, and was inspired, partially, by high school organizing in the USA. For an insider view, No Borders Media speaks with three Toronto-area high school students who helped to organize and participated in the walkout: Thea Baines, 17, Benjamin Doll, 19, and Amina Vance,17. Together, Thea, Benjamin and Amina provide background to the origins of the walkout, standing together for all students including queer and trans youth, the behind-the-scenes organizing and coordination between students from close to 100 schools, and how it felt to successfully organize a walkout that mobilized thousands. They also reflect on organizing challenges and look ahead to the alliances and strategies necessary to defeat the socially and economically right-wing agenda of the Ford government. We discuss Autonomous Disaster Relief in the context of Hurricane Florence, with reference to Hurricane Sandy (2012) and Maria (2017), and a breakdown of the colonial-capitalist exploitation of Puerto Rico. We explore a core topic of these news round-ups: Trump Resistance. We criticize the ruling class appropriation of resistance, and take a critical but open-minded look at the growth of social-democracy on the left in USA, with detailed reference to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the candidates they've supported, like Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez in New York City. We highlight ongoing examples of autonomous, grassroots resistance, including the Prison Strike, anti-fascist organizing, Occupy ICE actions, various teachers strikes, Indigenous Resistance to pipelines, and more. We get an update about an Occupy ICE comrade from San Antonio, Mapache, who stood up to neo-Nazi violence, as well as to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but was recently deported to Mexico after a months long detention. We muse about the continued relevance of, and increasing interest in, anarchist ideas and practice. Our conversational detours include Colin Kaepernick and Nike, the "woke industrial complex", and locking the doors of the McCain funeral to start a long overdue war crimes tribunal. This is an audio dispatch from No Borders Media. Earlier today, the Supreme Court of India issued a unanimous decision, overturning section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalized gay sex. The decision is an historic and meaningful victory for the mobilizing and organizing of queer communities in the Indian state. For perspective on this important decision, and to look ahead, No Borders Media spoke with Ponni Arasu, a Tamil, queer, feminist activist, and a member of Voices Against 377. She speaks about both the legal and grassroots organizing struggles of the past decade, the sectors of Indian society who opposed the decriminalization of gay sex, as well as the generations of queer people who fought against section 377 in the past. In this No Borders Media extended feature interview, we learn more about the organizing in support of Abdoul Abdi, a former child refugee, survivor of the foster care system, and prisoner. This past July, Abdi was finally allowed to stay in Canada despite several deportation attempts by the Canadian government. Abdi's case exposes multiple injustices of systems of control in the Canadian state, including the immigration system, the so-called child protection system, as well as the criminal justice and prison system. The successful mobilizing to keep Abdi in Canada is also an inspiring example of multifaceted, cross-city, intersectional organizing, as well as the power of Grassroots Black Canada. For an insider view of the support and organizing for Abdoul Abdi, No Borders Media speaks with El Jones, a poet and community activist based in Halifax (Nova Scotia). No Borders Media presents an exclusive interview with Indigenous warrior Kanahus Manuel, in the aftermath of the recent Canada Federal Court of Appeal decision to quash approval of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline project. The pipeline, which would move tar sands crude and refined oil from Alberta to the British Columbia Coast, has been actively opposed by diverse groups, and by varied means, including civil disobedience and direct action. The heart of the resistance has been Indigenous nations in the path of the proposed pipeline. Kanahus is active with both the Secwepemc Women Warriors and the Tiny House Warriors in resisting the Trans Mountain pipeline. For many years, she has organized against corporate exploitation of the lands of her people, including the Sun Peaks ski resort, Imperial Metals, as well as the Mount Polley mine. In this exclusive interview, the first one she has given since the Federal Court of Appeal decision, Kanahus both responds to the recent legal victory against the pipeline, and provides context and analysis about ongoing grassroots resistance to destructive resource extraction projections. She speaks to us from beside the Blue River, on the path of the proposed pipeline. Canada May End Military Mission in Afghanistan Canada's Minister of Defense stated yesterday that the country's military mission in southern Afghanistan will effectively end in 2009, a potential blow to NATO military operations there. FSRN's Stefan Christoff reports from Montreal. Canada's Defense Minister announced in a national TV interview that Canadian military forces will halt their military mission in Afghanistan in 2009 unless parliament votes for an extension. Canadian troops are currently engaged in a NATO-led military campaign in the southern province of Kandahar. Most of the 70 Canadian deaths in Afghanistan have occurred in the past year – a fact that has contributed to increased questioning of Canadian participation in the 5 year old mission. Polls show that on a nationwide level, the majority of Canadians favor an alternative to the NATO-led combat operation in Afghanistan. Jaggi Singh is an activist with Block the Empire in Montreal. (audio) “People involved in the anti-war movement in Quebec and in Canada have demanded an immediate withdrawal from Afghanistan. This mission itself is problematic in so many ways, particularly in so far as it's essentially serving a mis-guided war on terror led and directed by the United States.” British military officials recently estimated that hundreds of civilians have been killed in the past 6 months. In June, the Associated Press reported that civilian causalities caused by foreign troops outnumbered those caused by militants. Neither NATO nor US forces keep track of civilian deaths. For Free Speech Radio News, I am Stefan Christoff, in Montreal. /// listen to reports produced for Free Speech Radio News between 2002 - 2012, the flagship Pacifica radio daily news program, these reports were produced in Montreal, but also in Beirut, Lebanon. putting these reports up for archiving purposes, they address numerous grassroots struggles for justice and against oppression, particularly looking at struggles surrounding migrant justice, also indigenous movements for land and rights, while also struggles against colonialist wars today & the persisting impacts of wars past. thank you for listening ! stefan @spirodon

In consideration of recent events, cities across Canada have examined ways to signal that they are open to refugees and migrants. Some municipalities, like Montreal and London, Ontario have passed motions in their city councils proclaiming that their city is now a Sanctuary City. Cities that have already voted on these motions have heard stories of continued police checks, lack of proper funding from the municipality, and the ineffectiveness of the motions themselves. This episode of Rabble Radio explores the sanctuary city movement and how symbolic motions could lead to an effective approach to migrants. Murray Dobbin joined us on rabble radio a few times before the election got started. After the Conservative win and the orange crush happened, I called him up one more time for a talk about how Canada's future is shaping up, and what progressive people need to do in this new Conservative majority Canada. Here's our conversation. Did I mention that this year marks rabble.ca's 10th anniversary? It is! Last month rabble.ca held a celebration to mark the day, April 18, 2001 when rabble got its start. The event featured cake, music and a panel discussion moderated by Judy Rebick. Speakers were rabble.ca features editor Cathryn Atkinson, rabble co-founder and director of the Mozilla Foundation Mark Surman, rabble.ca writer and aboriginal activist Ben Powless. It also featured Olivia Nuamah, the Director of the Atkinson Foundation, which provided startup funds for rabble.ca. During the conversation, panelists mused allowed about the direction rabble.ca should take in the future. Nuamah laid out a challenge for rabble.ca. Here's what she had to say. The Human books project aims to increase understanding between people. It's held at local libraries, where people volunteer to be books. When you're a book, library goers can sign you out for 30 minutes. In that 30 minutes you can tell them about your life, and they can ask any question they want. rabble radio was quite intrigued by this project, so Noreen Mae Ritsema volunteered to head down to the Winnipeg library and talk to some human books. Here she is, speaking with Cherrilyn Ellie. Here's their conversation. You know the rabble.ca music podcast The Ruckus? It usually focuses on indie music… but the latest episode gets all opera on us. Here are some very cool cylinder recordings of opera. Test this out! Jaggi Singh's trial was held at the end of April. Singh was tried at Toronto's Old City Hall for statements he had made to the media about taking down the G20 “security fence.” Singh pleaded guilty to urging people to take down the $5-million G20 summit fence last June.
