Why do so many people insist on believing in systems that hurt them? Why do so many of us dwell in fantasy, rather than facing reality? (Wait, is dwelling in fantasy an option? Why weren't we told?) In this episode of WHAT DO WE WANT? (a podcast about what brings social movements together and drives them apart) Max and Sarah dive deep into the murky waters of FANTASY, desire and illusion to ask questions like: How do we break through destructive ideologies? How can we win arguments (and when should we)? And should we just abandon activism? Then we're joined by veteran Toronto-based activist, movement trainer and editor Sharmeen Khan, who tells us about the state repression that broke her fantasies and what she dreams of now. It's podcasting that accompanies you right to the precipice of Mount Doom and helps you throw away your Precious. ACTION ALERT! Our guest, Sharmeen, is facing outrageous, repressive charges for standing up for Palestinian human rights. Read Naomi Klein's summary of the case (https://breachmedia.ca/naomi-klein-calls-on-heather-reisman-drop-charges-indigo-11/), and please consider donating to the legal defence fund (https://www.tcjf.ca) or signing the letter demanding the charges be dropped (https://www.cjpme.org/drop_the_charges). This week, the First Quarter Moon in Gemini spurs us on to action; Venus and Jupiter meet in a fortunate and energizing (if combustible!) conjunction; Mercury receives Saturn's commendation for its work in Aquarius, then enters Pisces for a little dreamtime. And the second of April's three mini-lessons on Saturn in Pisces takes a look at Saturn through the houses of the birth chart. Big Sky Astrology on Facebook | Instagram |  Twitter |  YouTube Timestamps [1:10] Thanks to my listeners, the podcast recently reached a new milestone: 200K downloads since the first episode!  [1:53] Moon Report!  A First Quarter Moon at 8°27' Gemini will occur on February 27th (12:05 AM PST). The Sabian symbol for the First Quarter Moon is 9 Gemini, A Quiver Filled With Arrows. This tells us that we have all the skills we need to at least make some start toward a new project. The Sun is on the Sabian symbol 9 Pisces, A jockey, so we're spurring ourselves onto greater heights and speed. [3:26] This First Quarter Moon is the first action point in the Lunar Gestation cycle that began at the New Moon on May 30, 2022. This is the opening action point in that cycle that will continue to unfold over the next two and a half years or so. [3:58] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On February 28, the Moon in Gemini trines Saturn in Aquarius (5:07 PM PST). It's VOC for only an hour and a half before it enters Cancer (6:40 PM PST). Take some time to talk things over with a knowledgeable mentor. [5:07] The Moon in Cancer opposes Pluto on March 5th (6:22 AM PST). It is VOC for just about one hour before it enters Leo (7:16 AM PST). Embrace your feelings in an unabashed manner! [6:09] On March 5th, the Moon in Leeeeeooooo opposes Saturn at (7:18 PM PST). You barely have time for a snack during this 20-minute VOC period before the Moon before it enters Virgo (7:38 PM PST). [7:16] Venus conjoins Jupiter at 12°08' Aries on March 1st (9:36 PM PST), on the Sabian symbol 13 Aries, An Unsuccessful Bomb Explosion. As we lead up to the exact aspect, expect a little frustration (Aries can be impatient)! But the house of your chart that contains 12°8' Aries describes the area of your life that is about to get an energetic, possibly lucky, boost from this conjunction. [9:55] Mercury makes a conjunction with Saturn on the anaretic degree of Aquarius (29°24') on March 2nd (6:34 AM PST).  This is on Sabian symbol 30 Aquarius, The field of Ardath in bloom. This is a beautiful Sabian symbol that suggests that what we have done while Mercury has been in Aquarius has been fruitful and pleasing. [11:09] Mercury enters Pisces on March 2nd (2:52 PM PST) and will be in this sensitive sign until March 18th (9:24 PM PST). While in Pisces, Mercury works best with less structure and with communication that is considerate. [13:19] Mini-Lesson: Saturn in Pisces through the Houses.  The House or Houses of your birth chart where this transit will take place indicates the areas of life that will offer the opportunity to set boundaries, show compassion, and take responsibility by literally doing something to make this world a better place. [14:58] Transiting Saturn in the 1st House. Be kind to yourself and do not take on burdens that belong to someone else. [16:23] Transiting Saturn in the 2nd House.  This transit can be about finding a career that's meaningful and making solid, long- range plans to improve your financial circumstances. [17:49] Transiting Saturn in the 3rd House.  Learn by doing.  Also, focus on handling communications in a kind, ethical, responsible way. [18:48] Transiting Saturn in the 4th House.  Define what home means to you.  Family members could need your help at this time but don't forget to establish some healthy boundaries. [19:55] Transiting Saturn in the 5th House. Create something that will last. [21:39] Transiting Saturn in the 6th House. Buckle down and work that 9 to 5. [22:26] Transiting Saturn in the 7th House. Do you want the relationship badly enough to overcome whatever obstacles come your way? [23:14] Transiting Saturn in the 8th House. Prove your independence. [23:55] Transiting Saturn in the 9th House. Be the authority. [24:36] Transiting Saturn in the 10th House. Career crossroads can be expected.  Find the wherewithal to get up each day and put one foot in front of the other. [25:26] Transiting Saturn in the 11th House.  Find your reward, your status and respect. [26:07] Transiting Saturn in the 12th House. We're reminded of our mortality and limits, that things end, and that we need to take care of ourselves with appropriate boundaries. And happily for Jen and a special canine someone in her life, June 5 is National Black Bear Day! . 01:22 – We continue our musical tribute with our favorite songs from 1984: April goes with Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and John Waite’s “Missing You.” Jen picks fellow Minnesotan Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Get Up, Stand Up” by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Sing along with our full 1980s playlist: https://bit.ly/3fHbbKY. . 04:33 – The Sun conjoins the North Node (May 31), a signal that we’re in the heart of eclipse season. The North Node moves us forward, and with the Sun conjunct this point, our will and creative energy are the impetus. Be willing to be seen! . 07:31 *MOONWATCH!* The Pisces Last Quarter Moon (June 2) at 11.59 Pisces/Gemini urges us to complete chapters begun at the May 11 Taurus New Moon, as well as from March 2019. What did you initiate then, and how are you doing so far? Look at the big picture and take a gentle approach. . 12:02 - Venus enters Cancer (June 2 – 28), and soon trines Jupiter in Pisces (June 3). This is a homebody Venus that enjoys being with people she loves and cooking for them. Want to beautify your home? Tip: Watch spending as Venus trines Jupiter. The more throw-pillows the better! . 15:42 – Order April’s Followed by a Moonshadow Eclipse Report (https://bit.ly/2QFU6bE)! Woot! . 16:38 – As the Sun trines Saturn (June 3) at 13.24 Gemini/Aquarius, Saturn helps us use our unpolished, natural gifts to best advantage. Saturn now supports and rewards the work we did at the May 3 Sun/Saturn square. This aspect can rein in Venus/Jupiter excesses. Appropriately, April finds Saturn all too exhausting to talk about. . 19:06 – Mercury made its first of three squares to Neptune on May 22. This week brings the second square (June 5); it will make a third on July 6. Three chances to cut through the fog. Plus, a recap of Mercury’s current retrograde season. . 21:25 - Mars/Pluto came together in March 2020 as the pandemic emerged; as Mars opposes Pluto (June 5, at 27.27 Cancer/Capricorn), we can now see where we’re at. Mars in Cancer hesitates to go on the offensive, but can get pinchy when cornered. It’s tough to beat Pluto, though! Mars in Cancer is ruled by the Moon in Aries today, though, and won’t give in without a fight (but don’t go looking for one). Rely on your ability to build alliances to protect yourself and your interests. . 26:38 - Thanks for listening! Be sure to follow, rate and review, and tell a friend! In today's episode, we talk to Sharmeen Khan and Chris Dixon about the difficulties that define organization and movement building. We go over all the different labors that make up organizing and how organizing is about building the capacities and capabilities of as many people as possible. With our guests, we think through the organizational effects of the bad habits instilled in us by capitalist social relations and that come with us into our “self-organized” spaces. We'll explore how this will necessarily develop conflicts and the need to meet those with those care and how so much of organizing today has to mean rebuilding cultures of solidarity that neoliberalism has destroyed. We Will Outlive Them: For a World without Pogroms, for a Future without Fascism No Borders Media interview with Moishe & Sharona, on contemporary Jewish Anti-Fascism -> Listen, download and share here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/outlivethem On this No Borders Media audio dispatch, we get insight into contemporary Jewish Anti-Fascism with two individuals involved with the recent Outlive Them call to action (info: https://outlivethem.wordpress.com/). The call for anti-racist actions, between November 8 to 11, coincided with the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the violent precursor to the horror of the Holocaust. The actions this year had particular resonance due to the Pittsburgh Synagogue Massacre in late October. For perspective on modern Jewish Anti-Fascism, No Borders Media spoke with Sharona and Moishe of Outlive Them. Moishe is also a member of the Muslim-Jewish Anti-Fascist Front. Reflections on anti-racist strategy and tactics after the Bannon/Frum protest Discussion with Toronto community organizers Maya, Rachel & Sharmeen -> Listen, download and share: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/mayarachelsharmeen In this No Borders Media audio dispatch, we get insights and perspectives on resisting the racist far-right from three anti-racist organizers in Toronto involved in the recent mobilization against the Steve Bannon/David Frum Munk "Debate". Sharmeen Khan, Maya Menezes and Rachel Small -- all actively involved in mobilizing over 1000 people to oppose racism in Toronto this past Friday -- collectively share their frontline organizing reflections. Together, Sharmeen, Maya and Rachel address many tactical and strategic challenges in resisting the far-right, including confronting police violence, organized media work, coalition building, experiments in organizing, using disruptive tactics, rejecting cynicism, and overcoming marginality by engaging in concerted public and popular education. This interview was recorded late on November 5, 2018, three days after Toronto protest against Bannon and Frum. -> Listen, download and share: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/mayarachelsharmeen For updates on legal support for the anti-racists arrested at the protest against Bannon & Frum, visit www.facebook.com/NoOneIsIllegalNetwork ------- Here are some other recent No Borders Media podcasts of interest: - Feature interview with Gord Hill, author of THE ANTIFA COMIC BOOK: 100 Years of Fascism and Antifa Movements Around The World (Arsenal Pulp Press) Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/gordhillantifacomicbook - No Borders Media News Round-up Podcast #4: The election of the CAQ & Racism in Quebec Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/electioncaq - Resisting the right-wing Ford government and the far-right in Ontario: A conversation with Toronto-area left-wing activists Desmond Cole, Niloofar Golkar, Syed Hussan & Sharmeen Khan Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/torontonewsroundup - No Borders Media feature interview with members of Rose City Antifa (Portland, OR) Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/rosecityantifa - Grassroots Black Canada & Opposing the Deportation of Abdoul Abdi (interview with El Jones) Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/grassrootsblackcanada - Butterfly Sabrina Gopaul, Jane-Finch Action Against Poverty, on community resistance to racism Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/butterflyjanefinch ------- NO BORDERS MEDIA No Borders Media is an autonomous left-wing media network. No Hate in Toronto: Protesting and disrupting white nationalist Steve Bannon Discussion with Toronto anti-racist organizers Sharmeen Khan & Rachel Small -> Listen, download & share: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/nohatetoronto In this No Borders Media audio dispatch (October 31, 2018), we speak with two organizers of the Bannon-Frum Toronto UnWelcoming Committee, who are attempting to protest, disrupt and shut down this Friday"s Munk Debate event in downtown Toronto. The event features right-wing neo-liberal David Frum and right-wing white nationalist Steve Bannon, in a so-called debate. Sharmeen Khan, of No One Is Illegal Toronto, and Rachel Small of the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network and Council of Canadians address the arguments in favour of a vigorous campaign of opposition and de-platforming of the active enablers of far-right racism, particularly Trump ideologue Steve Bannon. We also discuss together strategies and tactics of resistance to the rise of the far-right, and the normalization of the politics of hate and blame. -> Listen, download & share: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/nohatetoronto ------- NO BORDERS MEDIA No Borders Media is an autonomous left-wing media network. No Borders Media News Roundup Podcast #3 Resisting the right-wing Ford government and the far-right in Ontario A conversation with Toronto-area left-wing activists Desmond Cole, Niloofar Golkar, Syed Hussan & Sharmeen Khan -> Listen to the podcast here: https://soundcloud.com/nobordersmedia/torontonewsroundup ----- On this No Borders Media News Roundup, recorded late on September 25, 2018, we focus on politics in Toronto and Ontario, looking closely at resistance to the right-wing Ford government. We hear from a panel of four Toronto-area left-wing activists, organizers and political commentators: Desmond Cole, Niloofar Golkar, Syed Hussan and Sharmeen Khan. Over the course of a more than one-hour conversation, we explore the regressive changes already brought in by the Ford government, and the possibilities of resistance to his agenda. We look critically at the demobilizing role of the NDP and big labour, but also hopefully at examples of grassroots self-organizing, from the recent high school walkout to Black Lives Matter and the Fight for Fifteen campaign. We raise the alarm bells about the increased normalization of the racist far-right in Ontario, as exemplified by the discourse of candidates running all over the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe. There's some kudos one progressive Toronto mayoral candidate, but focus on non-electoral rooted resistance to meaningfully disrupt the right-wing and far-right agenda. ----- NO BORDERS MEDIA No Borders Media, based in Toronto and Montreal, is an autonomous left-wing media network.
