Arun Gupta challenges conventional notions of career stability, arguing that "you should be seeking meaning… in meaning, you'll find your stability." As institutions become less reliable anchors, purpose—not title or employer—becomes the more durable foundation: "the constant will be why you're doing what you're doing." He rejects the idea that clarity must precede action. In fast-changing environments, "start acting… the action will bring you clarity," as waiting for certainty often leaves decisions outdated. Mission, in this framing, is iterative: "you don't wake up one day… here's your mission… you have to go find it." The discussion introduces a broader way to evaluate careers beyond compensation, emphasizing forms of capital that compound over time: trust, experience, learning, health, and mission. This supports a shift toward nonlinear careers, where phases of learning, earning, and contributing are integrated rather than sequential. On AI, Gupta emphasizes practical fluency over technical depth: "people [will be] replaced by people that use AI." At the same time, human capabilities: judgment, relationships, and diverse experience, become more valuable. The overarching message is measured optimism. Risk is often misjudged: "we over index on downside and underestimate upside." In this context, purposeful experimentation and long-term investment in multiple forms of capital offer a more resilient path. Arun Gupta is CEO of the NobleReach Foundation, a venture capitalist, lecturer at Stanford University, and adjunct entrepreneurship professor at Georgetown University, and a bestselling author of Venture Meets Mission and The Mission Generation. The Mission Generation Wants Impact. Must They Choose Between Tech and Public Service? — Arun Gupta, CEO of NobleReach Foundation

The TechEd Podcast

What if the future of technical talent is not Silicon Valley or public service, but a career path that moves fluidly between both?Arun Gupta sees that possibility from several angles: as a longtime venture capitalist, CEO of NobleReach Foundation, Stanford lecturer, and author of The Mission Generation. The strongest ideas and technologies only scale when they are matched with people who have resilience, curiosity, humility, and the ability to build strong teams. That same talent equation matters in government, where public service has struggled to compete with the prestige, speed, and perceived upside of high-growth tech careers.Government is still selling 30-year careers in a world where ambitious people are buying experiences. NobleReach is creating more credible pathways into public service, including programs that give talented people access to meaningful work, strong mentorship, industry visibility, and a community of peers who see service as a career enhancer rather than a detour. As AI disruption, geopolitical conflict, institutional distrust, and constant career change reshape the workforce, Gupta argues that mission may become one of the few stable throughlines left. The old choice between profit and purpose is breaking down, and the next generation of leaders may need to build careers that move across sectors, translate between cultures, and turn personal ambition into civic contribution.3 Big Takeaways:1. Public service needs to become a credible career accelerator for technical talent. Gupta argues that government has often sold young people on safety, stability, and 30-year careers, while many ambitious people now think in terms of high-impact experiences. NobleReach is trying to close that gap by making public service feel prestigious, professionally valuable, and connected to what talented people may do next.2. The most important variable in technology is still human talent. After nearly two decades in venture capital, Gupta saw the same pattern across successful startups: ideas and technology mattered, but people determined whether those ideas could scale. Resilience, curiosity, humility, leadership, and the ability to build strong teams became the real differentiators.3. Mission gives technical talent a reason to put their skills toward bigger problems. Gupta argues that many young people have come of age through COVID, geopolitical conflict, environmental stress, AI disruption, and other major shocks compressed into just a few years. That experience has intensified their desire to do work that means something, where their ambition, technical ability, and sense of civic responsibility can point in the same direction.Resources in this Episode:Get Arun's new book: The Mission GenerationMore links & resources on the episode page: https://techedpodcast.com/guptaWe want to hear from you! This is especially concerning considering the huge burden of mental health issues among young people in India and the gaps in access to care. The government is beginning to take note: the Supreme Court has asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, or FSSAI to consider warning labels on the front of packaged foods and the Economic Survey this year called for high GSTs on processed foods. India’s quick-commerce boom is masking a growing public-health crisis. A new analysis reveals that half of all packaged foods sold on these platforms are junk, HFSS or ultra-processed, with some apps listing unhealthy items at rates as high as 62 percent. What looks like convenience is reshaping consumer behaviour, especially among Gen Z, where late-night impulsive ordering has become routine and, in many households, a daily habit. At the same time, medical research links ultra-processed foods to a wide range of diseases including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular problems, kidney disorders and even depression raising alarms about long-term dietary patterns. In this episode host Anirban Chowdhury talks to Sachin Taparia founder of Local Circles and public health and nutrition expert Dr. Arun Gupta, convenor of Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPi). Everyone wants government to work better, and part of that is updating outdated systems and embracing modern technology. The problem? Our federal government faces a critical tech talent crisis. Only 6.3% of federal software engineers are under the age of 30, which is lower than the percentage of total federal workers under 30. That means that federal tech talent skews older than lawyers, economists, etc. Not to mention, Silicon Valley pays 2-3x more than the feds, which makes it hard to attract computer science majors into government. The shortage threatens America's ability to navigate an era of technological disruption across AI, quantum computing, defense tech, and semiconductors. While recent initiatives like Elon Musk's temporary team of young engineers and the $500 billion Stargate program highlight the urgency, they don't solve the fundamental problem: creating a sustainable pipeline of technical talent willing to take a pay cut for public service. This talent gap could hamper innovation despite the current AI boom that's receiving 60% of venture funding. How can the private sector and federal government work to bridge this gap?Evan is joined by Arun Gupta, who pivoted from 18 years as a Partner at Columbia Capital investing in cybersecurity and AI startups to leading NobleReach Foundation, which works to bring some of the best assets of the private sector into public service. They kick off their journey with a light-hearted conversation about their destination, quickly segueing into the substantive core of the episode. The dialogue provides a rich backdrop to the conference's key focus: securing applications and the crucial role of Software Bill of Materials (SBOMs) in this context.Special guest Cassie Crossley joins the hosts to delve deeper into the significance of SBOMs. Cassie introduces herself and highlights her previous engagements with the podcast, touching on her upcoming session titled "The Missing Link: How We Collect and Leverage SBOMs." She explains the essential function of SBOMs in tracking open-source and commercial software components, noting the importance of transparency and risk evaluation in modern software development.Cassie explains that understanding the software components in use, including transitive dependencies, is crucial for managing risks. She discusses how her company, Schneider Electric, implements SBOMs within their varied product lines, ranging from firmware to cloud-based applications. By collecting and analyzing SBOMs, they can quickly assess vulnerabilities, much like how organizations scrambled to evaluate their exposure in the wake of the Log4J vulnerability.Sean and Marco steer the conversation towards the practical aspects of SBOM implementation for smaller companies. Cassie reassures that even startups and smaller enterprises can benefit from SBOMs without extensive resources, using free tools like Dependency-Track to manage their software inventories. She emphasizes that having an SBOM—even in a simplified form—provides a critical layer of visibility, enabling better risk management even with limited means. The discussion touches on the broader impact of SBOMs beyond individual corporations. Cassie notes the importance of regulatory developments and collective efforts, such as those by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), to advocate for wider adoption of SBOM standards across industries. To wrap up, the hosts and Cassie discuss the value of conferences like OWASP Global AppSec for fostering community dialogues, sharing insights, and staying abreast of new developments in application security. They encourage listeners to attend these events to gain valuable knowledge and networking opportunities. Finally, in their closing remarks, Sean and Marco tease future episodes in the On Location series, hinting at more exciting content from their travels and guest interviews.____________________________This Episode's SponsorsHITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________Follow our OWASP 2024 Global AppSec San Francisco coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/owasp-2024-global-appsec-san-francisco-cybersecurity-and-application-security-event-coverageOn YouTube:
