Lorna Brown joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about the upcoming 35th Anniversary Quilt Show in Bishop Hill this weekend. Quilters and art enthusiasts can now explore the 2025 Bishop Hill Quilt Show at the Bishop Hill Colony School in Bishop Hill. The event celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Bishop Hill Quilt Show, which takes place May 16th through 18th. The main display, featuring a diverse array of quilts, will be at the Colony School. Admission to Colony School is $5, with doors open Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM. On Friday, attendees will select the winners from five categories. Each year, the Prairie Queen Quilt Club members select a charity to support by providing homemade quilts and part of the proceeds from the quilt show. This year, the group is supporting GROW Ministries in Cambridge, which provides shelter for women who are homeless or abused. This special exhibit is free to the public, though donations are appreciated, and will remain open throughout the month during regular hours at the Steeple Building Museum, located at 103 North Bishop Hill Street. The quilt show was started 35 years ago by Betty Robertson and Marilyn Nelson, who both owned and operated quilt shops in Bishop Hill in the mid-1980s. The Bishop Art Council helped sponsor the event until 1990, when the Prairie Queen Quilt Club branched out on its own.

Welcome to the 100th Episode of Not Your Granny's Quilt Show!Karlee Porter is a professional quilter who came to the industry in a non-traditional way. Karlee has always been artistic and loved sharing her art with her friends and classmates all through school. To earn extra money, Karlee would sell her designs and homemade caramels. When she was out of high school, newly married, and needing a job, she worked for HandiQuilter as a builder of subcomponents for the longarm machines. This is how Karlee was introduced to quilting. When she realized she could translate her drawings and art style onto fabric, she practiced for hours at work and at home to hone her skills. In 2014, Karlee wrote and self-published her book "Graffiti Quilting: A Simple Guide to Complex Designs". This year is the 10th anniversary of the first edition of her book. However, Karlee has tripled the size of the first book and the next Graffiti Quilting Class participants will receive the new version of the book in their Welcome Kit! Sign up for the class on her website and use code NYGQS25 to get a $25 discount on your tuition! Amanda is taking the class, so join her! It's been exciting to see the quilting community grow so much in the last few years. Along with that we are seeing more quilting podcasts being made. A few weeks ago I had the privilege of interviewing Amanda Oros of Not Your Granny's Quilt Show. And while chatting with her she told me about Lacie and Ashelyn of The Grateful Thread Podcast. Of course, I'm thrilled to get to share these quilting podcasts with you. On this episode I get to chat with Lacy Messerly, one of the co-hosts of The Grateful Thread Podcast and owner of Messy Quilts. She strives to have open and honest communication with her clients to create a quilt to be loved forever. Lacie mentions sending me pictures of the wonderful quilts we talked about and here they are: Connect with Lacie Website: Messy Quilts Follow Lacie's Quilty Adventures on All The Socials Also find Lacie and Ashelyn on The Grateful Thread Podcast A podcast and community where cool quilting newbies and experienced quilters unite! Christina West is the color-obsessed owner and face behind Kindred Quilt Co. From making crib sheets and baby bedding, Christina has grown her love of fabric, color, and design through her over 9 years of sewing and quilting. Christina's first business venture of making and selling crib sheets came to a close and opened the door for quilting. In 2020 she started designing her own quilts, and in 2022 published her first pattern to share with the world. This year - 2023 - Christina has been an Art Gallery Fabrics Sewcialite. Her curated fabric bundle is called Wildflower Hill, full of bright happy florals. Part of being a Sewcialite means providing a free pattern to coincide with her bundle and sharing all of her amazing makes with other Art Gallery fabrics. Christina's obsession with color is evident in her online presence. Her quilts are bright, fun, and happy. Her fabric choices tell a color story of joy and bring a smile to anyone's face! Christina Miller is the owner and happy face behind Fabric Pop - an online quilt shop for modern quilters. As a lifelong crafter, Christina has always loved fabric. Even in her first business endeavor - making and selling bags - Christina found the most joy in talking to her customers and other vendors about the fabric. When the business of bags had run its course, Christina took time to sew projects just for herself, using the fabrics she loved most. This inspired her to move into her next phase - starting a quilt shop! Christina's passion for fun, fussy-cuttable fabrics is evident in the inventory she carries. She and Amanda found that they could go on forever about their love for Ruby Star Society fabrics - which is where it all started anyway. Christina hopes to one day have a brick-and-mortar shop so she can serve her local community while she continues to provide a fun, funky and sometimes silly array of fabrics all across the country. Get to know Christina while you shop! Enjoy!
