Tonight's special guest is Penelope Benis from Bellevue, Washington, a returning NAASCA family member and a survivor of childhood domestic violence and sexual abuse. Born into multi-generational abuse, she endured extreme and multiple forms of maltreatment. The abuse was physical, mental, emotional and sexual in nature. As a survival technique in her childhood, Penelope completely dissociated the abuse via depersonalization. Her primary care doctor took notice and gently urged her to seek trauma-informed therapy. Five years ago her healing process began through intensive cognitive therapy and other modalities (such as hiking, yoga and meditation), which enabled her to begin the process of healing. Penelope considers herself to now be in recovery, which she defines as a lifelong process. Living in Bellevue, WA, with her husband and three sons, she works as an instructor at Bellevue College, holds a license as a Certified Ace Health Coach and is an avid activist in the prevention of child abuse. Penelope, a Certified Yoga Instructor (RYS200), has been Trauma Informed Trained in Yoga through Yoga Behind Bars in Seattle, WA. Penelope has published “Healing from Abuse; How Outdoor Exercise Can Energize and Awaken Our Minds, Lift Our Spirits, Enhance Our Cognitive Performance, and Help Alleviate Depression,” which can be found on the NAASCA website. Penelope, a member of NAASCA, serves on NAASCA's Board, holds the title of NAASCA's Washington State Ambassador, and hosts the Monday and Wednesday editions of NAASCA's “Stop Child Abuse Now” talk radio show.

When NBC’s “World of Dance” returns for its fourth season (10 p.m. Tuesday, May 26), two Seattle-area teens will be among the competitors showing off their moves. James Ades, of Kent, and Harris Weiskopf, of Bellevue, who met about five years ago through the Allegro Performing Arts Academy in Kent, will compete for a $1 million grand prize. Hosted by Scott Evans with judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo, the new season of “World of Dance” completed filming just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down Hollywood production. Ades and Weiskopf originally auditioned via video last September at the start of their junior years of high school. Ades was at Kentlake High School and Weiskopf was registered at Sammamish High School while attending classes through the Running Start program at Bellevue College. The teens had danced together before “World of Dance” but usually on larger group competition teams, not as a duo, for a specific reason: “Us together is nonstop goofing off and having fun and pulling each other’s chains,” Ades says. He credits Allegro instructor and choreographer Patrick Pulkrabek with putting the two together for “World of Dance.” “He saw an opportunity and we took it and we became a duo,” Weiskopf says. After their first audition submitted on video, the pair were invited to audition in-person in Los Angeles. “We really were going in at 100%,” Weiskopf says. “Not only is it crazy to think we had this opportunity, but it’s also our future and could impact our lives for the rest of our careers. We were in it to win it.” Once notified they’d made it to the next stage, the pressure began to mount. “Crap, this is awesome, this is amazing, but the other half of me was like, the world is going to see me dance, I better be my best. I have to be like a trained athlete,” Weiskopf says. “Dance is my life,” Ades adds. “This is my chance to put myself out there.” Described as contemporary dancers on “World of Dance,” Ades says their trainer is a ballet choreographer so they aimed to be versatile, working on a fusion of styles as they spent five hours a day in the dance studio for two months before “World of Dance” began shooting its new season early this year.

This week we present two stories from mothers who learned valuable lessons from the sons they birthed. Part 1: Avi Caspe and his mother, Ariel Detzer, reckon with what the label of "autism" means for their family. Part 2: When Paulette Steeves' son is given 2 years to live, she searches for a way to keep him alive. Dr. Ariel Detzer is a psychologist in Seattle, Washington, with a practice focused on neurodiversity. She believes that creating a better world for neurodiverse people comes about both through therapeutic support for clients themselves, and through educating clients, families, and surrounding educational and institutional stakeholders. Don't just help the client, change the whole system--this is the social model of disability. To challenge the complex pattern-loving part of her brain, she sings with the Seattle Early Music Guild a capella choir, Sine Nomine. Avi Caspe was a high school senior when he recorded this story. He began his autistic activism in sixth grade with a school social justice project on the lack of educator preparation for teaching autistic inclusion students. He made his first academic presentation to the national Association for Autistic Community Conference in 2014, sharing a presentation on how autistic middle schoolers process information in unique ways when under stress, which may in turn impact the way they process bullying experiences, as well as school discipline. Avi is now a freshman at Bellevue College in Washington, where he plans to major in Computer Science. He enjoys improving his standing on Rubik's Cube scores at World Cubing Association events. Paulette Steeves was born in Whitehorse Yukon Territories and grew up in Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada. She is an Indigenous archaeologist with a focus on the Pleistocene history of the Western Hemisphere. In her research Steeves argues that Indigenous peoples were present in the Western Hemisphere as early as 60,000 years ago, and possibly much earlier. She has created a data base of hundreds of archaeology sites in both North and South America that date from 250,000 to 12,000 years before present, which challenges the Clovis First dogma of a post 12,000 year before present initial migrations to the Americas. Dr. Steeves received her BA in Anthropology, Honors Cum Laude from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and completed a two-year internship with the Quapaw Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) program during her undergraduate studies. In 2008 Dr. Steeves was awarded the Clifford D. Clark fellowship to attend graduate studies at Binghamton University in New York State. Dr. Steeves dissertation Decolonizing Indigenous Histories: Pleistocene Archaeology Sites of the Western Hemisphere is the first dissertation framed in Indigenous Method and Theory in Anthropology within the United States. In 2011 and 2012 she worked with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to carry out studies in the Great Plains on mammoth sites which contained evidence of human technology on the mammoth bone, thus showing that humans were present in Nebraska over 18,000 years ago. In 2019 she started a new research project focused on creating sacred Indigenous regenerative soils to address food insecurity in the North. Dr. Steeves has taught Anthropology courses with a focus on Native American and First Nations histories and studies, and decolonization of academia and knowledge production at many universities. She is currently an Assistant Professor in History at Algoma University and is a nominee for a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous History Healing and Reconciliation. Has the internet made hate more infectious? Personalized feeds and sophisticated algorithms can direct us to content and communities that reinforce our most radical ideas and worst impulses—and dare us to act on them. Humanities WA invited us to a discussion as part of their Think and Drink series, encouraging us to explore the benefits of a connected world and ask whether the internet is built for hate. In collaboration with the iSchool at the University of Washington, Humanities WA presented a panel of speakers to help us examine the proliferation of online hate. They identified how a rise in hate groups, coupled with multiple mass shootings that incubated in dark online corners, has raised urgent questions about how the web has affected the way we treat one another. From trolling to White Nationalism, explore the mechanics of online hate, the responsibilities of tech companies and governments, and what we should—and shouldn’t—do to try to stem the tide. Panelists: Anna Lauren Hoffmann is a researcher, writer, and educator working at the intersections of data, technology, culture, and ethics. She is an Assistant Professor with The iSchool at the University of Washington, whose work centers on issues in information, data, and ethics. Shankar Narayan is the Director of the Technology and Liberty Project at the ACLU of Washington. He works to bring values of fairness, transparency, and accountability to surveillance and machine learning technologies, and to lift the voices of impacted communities. Eric Davis is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Bellevue College. He has also taught Ethnic Thought and Culture at Pierce College, as well as Multicultural Communication at Cascadia Community College and Introduction to Multicultural Studies at Shoreline. Presented by Humanities Washington, the iSchool at the University of Washington, and Town Hall Seattle. Recorded live in The Forum on October 9, 2019.

Even in a booming economy, the American media industry is contracting at an alarming rate. Reporters everywhere are being forced out of the business through layoffs and shutdowns, and many Americans are concerned that biased and partisan media organizations are replacing local news coverage with a top-down slate of propaganda pieces. In the first of a series of discussions sponsored by Fuse Washington, Town Hall presented a panel conversation (moderated by writer and former Stranger editor Paul Constant) diving into the challenges and ethical difficulties that Seattle faces in a time when fewer reporters than ever are charged to cover a complex, fast-moving region. Can a city function without a robust independent media? Or will fake news and corporate propaganda undermine our democracy? Panelists will include University of Washington’s Adrienne Russell, Bellevue College’s Clifford Clawthon, and journalist Peter Jackson. Adrienne Russell is Mary Laird Wood Professor in the Department of Communication and Associate Director of the Center for Communication and Civic Engagement at University of Washington.  Her research explores journalism and activist communication and how they shape coverage of various pressing social issues including climate change, corporate and government surveillance, and tech policy. Clifford “Cliff” Cawthon is a Professor of Political Science and Cultural and Ethnic Studies at Bellevue College and a local freelance journalist, who has reported on housing, racial justice and local politics. In addition to his work as a journalist, he’s also been a workers’ rights and community organizer, working on historic campaigns; such as, the Fight for $15. Peter Jackson, a freelance journalist, is the former editorial page editor of the Everett Herald. He also worked at Crosscut.com shortly after its inception, writing the “Daily Scan,” a compendium of local news, as well as original stories on local, state and national politics. Presented by Town Hall Seattle and Fuse Washington. Recorded live in The Forum on July 11, 2019.

Autophagy is a term that refers to cellular self-digestion. We have heard the term self-attack-self in situations like autoimmunity; Well this a different type of process that is a normal every day process in the cell of cellular self-digestion. Technically autophagy is a catabolic metabolic program/process that is activated when intracellular nutrient uptake or availability is diminished. It was coined in the 1960’s by the late Christian de Nuve. It has resurfaced quite predominately since Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy – a study into how cells detoxify and repair themselves. Autophagy has a number of pathways that are studied that are associated with it such as the Mammalian Target of Rapamycin (MTOR) and Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2). This is relavant because we know inflammation causes disease and many protective pathways of inflammation are regulated by NRF2 . Likewise we know that protein aggregating in cells is one of the key findings in disease. Autophagy is one of the pathways that clears up protein debris from harming cells. So understanding inflammation and autophagy is kind of important. Inflammation can knock down autophagy so these topics must be studied together. Our guest Dr. Jeffrey Novack understand these pathways quite well and most interesting to us is that he understands how nutrition and chemicals from plants can influence these pathways. More about our guest. Dr. Jeff Novack earned his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Washington School of Medicine (Department of Pharmacology) in signal transduction (lab of Dr. Joe Beavo). He did post-doctoral research in immunology and tyrosine kinase signaling at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (lab of Dr. John Cooper). He taught pharmacology, immunology, infectious disease, and pathology at the medical school level for 13 years. He most recently was a tenured faculty at Bellevue College, where he taught anatomy and physiology, microbiology, cell biology, and nutrition. Dr. Novack joined the faculty at PNWU in September of 2012 and has taught immunology, portions of pathology, and pharmacology. He has done research on the effects of PSK on immune function in mice and humans and is interested in the effect of natural products on the innate and adaptive immunity and on inflammation. He likes to hike (has climbed all of the volcanoes in Washington state), bike, fish, cook and do polar bear swims in the winter. Articles mentioned in the episode Novack. I was born and raised in Seattle, WA where I began my career as a model. After settling into modeling, I branched out into acting and fell in love with the art. As I was pursuing both modeling and acting, I attended Bellevue College pursuing a degree in Communications. After completing my 2 year degree I moved to LA and enrolled at Loyola Marymount University to finish my four year AND pursue acting and modeling. The juggling of all of this was stressful and almost impossible so to lighten my load, I took a leap of faith and paused my education to focus on my art. I have not looked back since and have had many great accomplishments along the way such as several national commercials, spreads in magazines such as Vogue and Essence, and much more. I feel like I am just getting started and look forward to what else is in store for me. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theactorslounge/support

Irish pubs proliferated beyond Ireland in the 1980’s and 90’s when Guinness set up a consulting firm called Irish Pub Concept, which helped start thousands of Irish themed pubs around the world. Tim Jones, professor of Political Science at Bellevue College near Seattle Washington, takes us to a very different kind of Irish pub on the Wild West Coast of Ireland.

Nancy Gonlin, Professor of Anthropology at Bellevue College says that “Without electrical lighting to guide the way, our ancestors in the ancient world experienced night very differently than we do today...As light pollution continues to dissipate the darkness for us modern humans—changing, for example, our perception of the stars—the urgency to document the history of human experience from dusk till dawn has never been greater.”

The fiftieth anniversary of the 1965 civil rights march from Selma is coming up next week. Utah State University Assistant Professor of Global Communication Jason Gilmore and two of his students, Spanish major Adrian Bustamante and global communication major Miranda Vance, will be traveling by bus to Selma for the anniversary. Along for the trip are 49 other participants, including those from the University of Washington and Bellevue College. Along the way, the group of 52 will be stopping at sites important to the civil rights movement. Gilmore will be sending UPR reports from the road. As a one-time English PhD student, Janis Machala didn’t always know her career would lead her down a business path. But now she helps other people pursue their passions and get the education they need to achieve their dreams, as the Executive Dean of Continuing Education at Bellevue College. On this edition of Nextcast, I interviewed Machala and learned how technology is changing education and why working at a big company might be a better first job for recent graduates. Plus, Machala shares her tips for creating an amazing startup culture. “I never thought of myself as a business person,” Machala says. But when a friend referred her to her school’s business school as a possible avenue for jobs, she found herself enrolling in an MBA program, eventually specializing in marketing. “I loved the complexities you get in the marketing field.” (2:00) Once she entered the workforce, Machala began working in textbook publishing -- an industry which, at the time, was struggling with how to integrate software and CD-ROMs into their products. “Nobody knew what to do with software,” Machala explains. A natural risk-taker, Machala volunteered for every opportunity to experiment with the new technology. “I found that making things up where there hasn’t been a hundred year history...is much more my style, she said, adding, “I realized the technology field was probably a great place for me.” (4:00) Machala has worked at companies big and small across many industries, and has learned the importance of culture -- and why it’s more than ping pong tables and beer fridges. “So few people take a job for salary. Most people take a job because they believe in what that company’s doing,” she says. “Founders need to understand that they need to market to their talent.” And it’s not all about money. She notes, “Amazon is pretty frugal. It doesn’t stop them from recruiting talent.” (7:50) “I think technology is going to radically change education,” Machala says. “Not only are we going to have this integrated offline-online world, but there’s going to be some fundamental analytics and big data elements” which will allow teachers to have early warning for students who are falling behind. She is curious to see how online education solves its current culture problem: students don’t form the same friendships and teams they do in in-person classes. “People have to know themselves,” she says, before trying a course online. (9:00) Her advice to young founders and businesspeople is simple: “be willing to take calculated risks.” She adds that much of her success is due to being “willing to jump in and learn about something and not accept the status quo.” She adds that listening is just as important as talking. “You learn more by hearing what the needs are than by assuming what the needs are.” (13:35) Machala says she advises students who are considering startups for their first jobs to first spend some time at a big company. A big company is “a great learning environment”. When you are just starting out, you have no sense for what is a good company, a good financial model, a good marketing strategy. Get your baseline education at a big company, and the innovate when you’ve got the necessary basics down. (20:00)
